HTC Sensation/CM9 Best radio - HTC Sensation

Hello every one,
So my question is does any one know what the suggested radio for a Sensation on CM9 would be? I just rooted my Sensation about a month ago and have tried a few different roms, most recently Android revolution HD and now CM9 rc1. So far I love CM9 and plan to stick with it for a while but I feel like I'm not getting the best data reception. It seems like I drop from H(4g) down to 3g and back up again quite often in areas where I had fairly reliable service before. I've done some google searches and searched the forums here as well as CM's forums and can't seem to find a recommended radio file.I'm no longer on a stock radio since Android Revolution suggested a different one. Suggestions? Thanks for the help.

The reason you won't see a recommended radio file is because what works say for me might not work in the areas you live in. So radio is something you will have to experiment with to find your correct radio with matching ril file.something that works well in YOUR area. This is why people can not recommend a great combination for you. You will have to find what works best in your Area. When you flash the radio don't forget the matching ril file that goes with it ok. So do some experiments and see what works best for YOU. You flash the radio like any other pg58img file from bootloader then delete the file Afterward or it can prevent you from going to recovery. The ril is flashed like a Rom. Hope this helps you and answered your questions. So you alone must find what combo works best in your area. Best wishes to you.

Ok, so using what you said, I stumbled into THIS post and started rereading(I had actually looked at this before but didn't "get it"). I see that some of these are posted for certain countries. Is there a way to tell which ones are for tmobile 4g in the USA? Is anything NOT listed for another country assumed to be from the USA? Is there another list of radios/rils I should be starting with? Does country of origin actually matter at all?

If you scroll down you will see a link to ICS mirror on that same page. It has several generic ics radios , those are generic so I believe they will work with ics. I'm T-Mobile and I used the newest radio on that page and it works great! I would NOT use a radio labelled for a different country. For me I kept on the safe side and used the ics radios. The link is just before the gingerbread radios start. The name of the contributor is written in blue. That link will take you to ICS radio/ril mirrors. They work great for ics. Find the combo that works best for you and your area.
Best wishes.

So I downloaded, checked md5 and flashed a new radio. Now my ROM wont load. I can still get into recovery but it wont load CM9. Suggestions?

You have to find a radio and matching RIL file that is working for your area. Did you use the generic ics radio file WITH matching RIL file? Each radio has a matching RIL file that goes with it?
You install both. Then see which combo works best for your area. In my case I used the newest radio/ril combo for ics. It is working well in my area .

I did use matching files, but it wouldn't boot. I ended up reloading stock tmouse firmware and re-flashing CM9. Ill have to try again tonight since I cant get away with any more while I'm at work.

Ok I'm glad you got it working! Best wishes!

Just as an FYI - After you flash new firmware, you need to go into recovery and wipe Cache, or wipe both cache and delvik cache. Otherwise, you will never get past the cm9 boot logo.
I learned this the hard way

Doh! Did not know that, and I didnt wipe it until I tried flashing a new Rom. Wonder if that would have fixed it right off.

Radio flashing procedure Q

I'm thinking of updating my li'l heroc's radio (currently 2.42.01.04.27) by downloading the appropriate zip and flashing from ClockworkMod recovery. Here's my Q: afterwards, will I need to flash my CM6.1 and gapps all over again?

No you wont have to update the rom, gapps, kernel or any other mods you may have. Updating your radio will change your baseband. I was on the same radio you were until I changed my radio to the Verizon desire radio because it gives me better service for sure. I didnt do mine thru clockwork so i dont know how that works I just got the update zip and flashed it in recovery. Be careful using diff methods or zips to flash radios one bad one and u got a brick. Good luck

Unless you are using firerats custom partitions. Then it isn't so easy as flash and go, but still not hard to do.

Takes about 30 minutes if your using firerats mod, but even then you still dont lose anything.
I flashed baseband 2.42.01.04.27 and still not getting much improved reception in a fringe area (my home). Common to get around -98 to -100 db.
Any suggestions for other radios that might work better on the weak end?

Hey I had a question about that. By flashing the Verizon radio won't that be considered like Roaming because you're not using Sprint Towers??? Also how is the improvement in say signal strength and data?
Just wondering cause i'd like to improve my phone signal.

yea i wanna know about using verizon towers too... especially for 3g...wasnt there some hack besides flashing radio?

I loaded the latest radio and the numerical signal is about the same but the phone displays two bars once in awhile which never showed before from the same fringe location. Will need more time talking on the phone before deciding if there is any marked audible quality improvement.
The -xx dmb readout and the graphic bar display do not seem to be in synch anyway. It can show -95 dbm and then only one bar while other times I have seen it at -98dbm and showing two bars, so really not sure which is more reliable.

If your having slow data speeds on AOSP Builds...

If anyone is having slow data speeds for the AOSP builds, CM7, or the like, I flashed the recommended radio and BAM my speeds are back to 4.5 down and 1.5 up. This might be common knowledge and if so just delete the thread, but I was having consistently good data speeds on every sense rom even without the recommended radio, and for some reason when I flashed adamholden's ROM with the stock radio was getting as low as .2 down and .8 up, and after a helpful suggestion to flash the radio through HBOOT (just putting the PD98IMG file on my sd and booting into the bootloader and letting it do its thing) which was way easier in my opinion than all the eng s-off stuff, not to mention safer, my speeds are back up to the normal 4.5 down and 1.5 up. Hope this helps, because I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out all this new radio stuff (came from the captivate).

I see in your sig you've got TPGB's AOSP ROM, so you must be referring to radio version 26.06.06.30. This is the new stock radio that HTC pushed out a couple of weeks ago to the stock Inspires. This has been a great radio for me as well.

+1 I switched to the new radio as well so far no complaints.
And not trying to be rude to the OP but it's AOSP not ASOP lol.

That's where you can get your radio from and it tells you how to flash it.

Nice.. I was looking through your sig and noticed you had a link to the APN fix thread, are u using it now on TPGB? and if so are you seeing increased speeds?

You need to use carrier specific radios as much as possible. Be VERY careful flashing radios.

Yes. In my market, most custom ROMs run slow without the APN fix.
I think this ROM already has the fix implemented (I'm back on CM7).

ROM issue

I tried installing BAMF 3.0 RC2 on my phone, and I can't seem to get it working properly. Upon startup it force closes a bunch of things and the radio shows no signal at all. I have ran the MD5 on the download to ensure integrity. Also did a complete wipe prior to flashing. Could this be a radio problem? I haven't done any radio upgrades.

when you say everything is the same, do you mean it still has the previous radio version number?
I'd suggest that you both:
1) Wipe data/dalvik/cache and flash back to a froyo ROM where you do have a signal
2) Upgrade from froyo to the MR2/2.5 radio
3) Re-wipe data/dalvik/cache (or even do it twice for good luck ) and re-flash BAMF 3.0
If its worth doing, its worth overdoing, especially when you're messing with radios and the like. Best of luck!
That's the same problem I first had with gingeritis before flashing the correct radio.. if you are still experiencing the problems after the radio flash i would suggest confirming the radio did install by checking the version number..
if it is all correct do as MattBeyers said and wipe and reflash
Thanks, that seemed to work. I still got a couple of force closes but much less than before. Also I can see my radio now! If I wanted to restore my old my Backup (Stock Froyo - MR1), do I restore my backup then flash MR1? If so, does anyone have a link the MR1 image? TIA!
I'm always one to upgrade/downgrade radios before I flash a ROM, so I would say to downgrade to MR1 and then flash the Froyo backup. Also, try going into ROM manager and using the Fix Permissions tool to see if that helps with some of the force closes.

Any reason for flashing one before the other? Reading through several of the ROM threads, it seems like everyone has a preference, but no one explains why.

I just feel like the radio, being the thing that, well, controls every useful function on the phone, should be installed and present when a new ROM is flashed. I may be wrong, but it would seem logical to me that a new ROM would talk to the radio in order to make sure everything is kosher. But what if that's something that a ROM will only do once, at the first boot, and not once a new radio is flashed? Then, all of a sudden, you have the right radio, but its configured improperly by your ROM, since the ROM has already gone through its initial boot set up with the old radio. Therefore, my theory is radio > ROM (Please note, theory. )

This makes sense from a logical reason. Perhaps a ROM developer on this site can confirm this.

twrp/radios

tmous
leedroid 2.1 .16---08 radio
1. anyone using the twrp recovery on leedroid as opposed to cwm and do you like it--read you don't have to boot into recovery to flash new radio zip as it bypasses htc restrictions. And, no need to fastboot separate boot.img when flashing roms like leedroid.
2. also, being on the above rom and radio, i want to flash the newer eu radio .10 either thru cwm (boot into recovery) or twrp straight from recovery--anyone find the .10 better on tmous/leedroid--any issues to be aware of flashing other than check md5, although i didn't see a md5 listed
3. take it i can't extract radio.img and fastboot like on N1----?
Thanks
Ken
I did the same thing you are thinking about doing last week.
I'm on Tmobile USA. On LeeDroid Rom. I was curious and flashed the EU Radio. Now for me I began running into trouble such as the MMS not working properly. But the biggest drawback for ne was that I would have to try to call someone two or three times for the phone to connect. And a lot of the times once someone picked up I could not hear them.
This was my personal experience with the EU radio so I decided to flash the TMO-USA radio again and all was good.
I don't want to discourage you though because there were also some people who were saying that they flashed the EU radio without any problems and that it worked fine for them.
All in all if it doesn't work out for you then you could always just flash the other one.

appreciate your reply ydizzle
i will hold off for now pending other posts, don't know if how you flashed it matters like wiping cache first etc. and as mentioned don't think you can extract and fastboot it without s-off
this phone has been perfect and no issues unlocking/rooting/flashing roms--haven't done a restore yet. this is different from my N1 where i think after two years of rom flashing and running ics i maxed it out, so to speak. i don't want to go back to that, so i will leave radio as is for now. bought this phone planning on not doing a lot of flashing. don't know if i can continue to do that--it is too tempting sometimes--
Same happened to me with the EU radio it was bad

Not looking good for the European radio
I just flashed the Radio which came with the new OTA update with no issues so far. I'll let you guys know if i run into any issues.
No problems with the new radio. Calls and MMS work flawless. Data speed seems to have improved slightly.

ydizzle did you flash the flashable one from the new tmous thread thru cwmr or did you manually extract the radio.img and fastboot into recovery, adb bootloader, and fastboot the radio.img
people seem to have no issue with the flashable zip
i usually prefer fastboot on radios
ken
I flashed the radio through recovery. Didn't wipe anything either.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
I will give it a go
You didn't have to copy zip to sdcard, fastboot boot recovery.img first from command window, then flash zip--
I think I might have found an issue. Whenever I am on a phone call my data switches off.
In other words, I can't browse the web while I'm talking to someone.
Before the updated radio this wasn't an issue.
If anyone else has just flashed the new radio, can you reply and lmk if your having this same issue?
i think i heard of this with other tmous radios
i know on eu leedroid one all is perfect
Update: Flashed the Energy Rom and now I have data again during calls. I am a happy camper.
Seems like that Rom has no issues for tmobile USA.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
been thinking about that rom, but this one is perfect for me atm--stock radio though. although, i flashed diff radios on n1 and never noticed a difference
may wait for next Energy update as BT is still in doubt for some
just flashed the new tmous radio on latest LeeDroid
no signal strength improvement over pre flashing--still 97 to 101
that low signal is common for my location at home as house sits right under a red, dead zone circle for tmobile--sucks
no big deal as i have wifi at home
will have to test for awhile. but, if no negative effects no reason to go back to old radio

My phone isn't receiving any data. Can anyone help?

Last Friday and Saturday I began having some serious issues with my phone. The SIM Card would randomly disconnect and reconnect and my phone would randomly restart. Starting yesterday, this issue no longer occurs, but I am unable to get any data on my phone. WiFi works perfectly, but 2g, 3g, and 4g never connect. The 3g icon will appear for a brief moment and then disappear again.
I'm currectly running the most recent stable release of Cyanogenmod 9, if that matters. I also think this could be a hardware issue, so if I have to send my phone in should I try to go back to stock firmware?
Thank you in advance!
Have you tried a different radio and ril combo? I lost data once and I looked in the generic ICS radio and ril files. I upgraded to newest radio and ril and I was up and running again and never had a problem with it since. You flash the ril like a Rom and the radio like a pg58img file. Best place to start would be just the generic ICS radio and ril files. There is about 7 I believe give or take. You can try it out and see if that helps you out . It fixed my problem completely and I had NO data at all. Best wishes, it won't hurt to try. Test out a few and see what works best for your area. Hope this helps!

Hi,
Are you s-off?
If not, you cannot flash any firmware or radio.
And yes, flashing a bad radio can brick your phone.
If you do flash one, make sure to check the md5 checksum first.
