[Q] Jelly bean and apk. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to install a .apk but keeps coming up with " [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_APK] "
I had 4.0 before and they downloaded fine. I flashed with Jelly Bean and now this error.
I assume its because Jelly Bean is new but maybe I'm wrong can anyone help me?

Hi.. since nobody post an answer and has some views, i think you already got the answer, probably an incompatible JB apk, as an example Flash player will not be supported in Jelly Bean. Maybe after the OTA?

When one creates an APK, it has a manifest file containing a property called uses-sdk. This property has minSdk and maxSdk attributes.
My guess is that it's limited/maxed to ICS SDK version (which is 15), rather then JB SDK number (16).

yeah flash is incompatible with JB if u trying to install it from play store, although u can still install flash on ur JB, it will most likely crush ur browsers every time u will try to access pages with flash content.

This doesn't have anything to do with Flash, I am getting this too on both the SDK port (4.1) And the newer built-from-source ports (4.1.1)
Code:
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_APK]
No matter what apk I try to install from the adb command line.

I get this same message when trying to do "adb install" on a a JB rom. I dont know why though

I've just installed 4.1.1 and have just the same issue
logcat says Unable to open zip '/data/local/tmp/myapp': Permission denied and fails. but when I copy apk to sdcard and installing it from file manager everything works just fine.

i have the same problem, cant use phone for dev

I have the same issue. After getting the installation error, I looked at the file permissions on my device in the /data/local/tmp directory. They are 600 and owned by root:root. I believe these file permissions need to be 666, but I don't know how to get them to be set correctly. Connecting via adb and running 'umask' shows 077 and my co-worker's umask is 000 and his phone (galaxy nexus with JB) works just fine. I am guessing somehow adb's umask is wrong and I have no idea how to get it set correctly.
BTW: I have i9020a

What I ended up doing was downloading a App installer off the market. and placing the APK file on my phone and installing it using the app installer. Works wonders

i need help gettng these modded jb apps on my phone :crying:

[Updates] JACHero / TwistedZero Co-Op OTA Updater (6/27/09 - 2:33AM EST)

After painstakingly researching into jfupdater, fixing a bad adt and sdk installation, and realizing that both the 1.1 and 1.5 sources could not coexist in one project, it is done. This program will work for JACHero 1.7 / TwistedZeroP and later builds. Due to the pre-work nature of TwistedZero, this will ensure that at least one of the system.zip archives is on the ext partition (it may not provide the most updated programs, but it will at least allow the update to be installed) You have the option to poll all updates, just JACHero, just TwistedZeroP or just TwistedZeroM. So far, only JACHero's updates will download because I am still working on getting mine on a dedicated server. I will try to keep as up to date as possible with download availability. Anyway, without any further stalling:
http://twistedumbrella.googlepages.com/heroupdater.ui.apk
Updating to the latest *working* version
You will need to have transferred the build.prop file to the /system/ folder of the phone for this to work.
They are available through my site's main page for my builds, and for now on my google code for JACHero until I get a new page coded for that.
Currently working on getting my builds program ready. Default update type is TwistedZeroP (can be changed in menu). Program is now a free download on market. Hero Update.
Very nice......
great job man

It will display downgrades if you either have a version it cannot detect that is compatible with the updates or haven't gone to the configuration menu and unchecked display downgrades
ace. i thought all the hero roms required a wipe before each upgrade so this comes as great news.
thanks

You're still gonna get wiped depending on the build.
it told me error while downloading what am I doing wrong...?
Very nice . This will truly make things easier. Nice work Twisted and Jac =).
So..I get a message when using update. The update app says "Your system is running an unsupported OS. (Version unknown) Please manually upgrade to JACHero 1.7 / TwistedZeroP or later and try again"
I understand its still a work in progress..just reporting my experience with the process.
Is "M" not a newer version than "P"?
I would assume, that even if the updater could not find an update for M, that M would still be a supported version and that it would just give me an error of not able to find an update for it or something. Not that M is unsupported.
FYI for all..I downloaded the files via the phone, installed linda file manager, android .Zip app(AndroZip) and AppsInstaller app. I Extracted the build.prop with and androzip, moved the file to /system/ on the phone with Linda, installed the HeroUpdater.ui.apk with Appinstaller. And then I get that message about an unsupported OS.
Great idea, thank you Twisted & JAC!
How do I use it? It shows me TwistedZero 1.7P as an update - can I just download it and then it will be installed?
No wipe or something like that?
an error occured while downloading 1.7P ?!

Did you reboot after copying the build.prop? Rebooting did it for me (seems like this file is read when the system comes up).
Do I replace the build.prop file I already have on my /system/ folder or do I not even need to worry about the build.prop?

Yes, the idea is that you replace it. The only difference between both files is a new reference to the build name (so the apk can tell what version you are on). Nevertheless it's always a good idea to back things up before you overwrite any files (learned the hard way throughout the years . So simply do something like 'cp /system/build.prop /sdcard/build.prop.old' from the terminal or 'adb pull /system/build.prop' from your computer before actually replacing the build.prop file.

Google Search by Voice v1.4.1 install fails

Searched the forum and wiki and can't find anything on this.
Trying hard not be a 'compleet newb'....
Problem: I've tried to download and install the latest update (v1.4.1) to Google Search by Voice. It fails saying it is not correctly signed. I am not able to uninstall it via the Market software. The existing version is present and still works.
I was thinking of manually uninstalling it and then attempting a re-install from the market. Has anyone had any success getting this update to install on CM 4.2.7.1?
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.7.1 on my HTC Magic 32B, applied over the flashed and clean-installed 1.6 rooted base - no CM Updater. (Seems to give a better, more stable result - may affect the behaviour of the update).
this stupid error happens because of the test keys or the userdebug keys thay cyanogenmod uses. I would download it somewhere online and use adb to replace the old one wiht the new one. It should work.
Yes I have the same problem with same model phone etc. etc.
I understand the workaround will be the same as Google maps 3.2.1 update but I cannot find up to date "Google search by voice" apk. I was wondering if anyone knows a source that mirrors up to date apps, or could even link a tut about how to get apk's copied out of the phones /tmp folder?
Thanks
I'll check out the package name in the Applications settings and see if I can find it anywhere or somehow capture it. Later....won't have any time until this evening.

That's great I didn't think of that, ill whip out those quotation marks and asterisks for google too. Also later...... 00:20 is not the right time for this....... so tempted......!!!
I fixed the maps.apk problem by going into adb and uninstalling maps.apk and then removing all traces of it. Then I went to marketplace and i downloaded it as normal and it now works perfectly.
Try that with voice search
Do we know what the package name is? Usually something like "com.google.android.apps.xxx" Could try uninstalling through adb. Then re-download from the market?
hello, could u plz share the installer? its not available on the marketplace in my country.
thanks very much
success
Ok, I managed to get Google Search by Voice updated to 1.4.1. I'm no pro and it took ages but it works.
Could a mod advise whether I am allowed to post a link to the apk?
I would be happy to post the steps i took but its not something i have done before and worse still, i used cmd not putty (noob error #1!). So the commands and the order i used them in are lost.
Should have used ubuntu..............
the concept consisted of updating the app and simultaneously using this command while it was downloading
Code:
cp /cache/downloadfile-9.apk /sdcard/download
"9" is only because it is the 9th apk i have downloaded and once the install fails the OS deletes the apk.
(for anyone else it would be different. go into /cache and type ls at the prompt to see what your next number will be)
then rename downloadfile-*.apk to VoiceSearch.apk, remove the original in the phone using adb and replace with the updated app.
I will post again tomorrow with clearer instructions but would much rather post a link to the apk I got, if it is permitted
hmmm. doing an 'adb shell rm /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk' and reinstalling from the market still gives you the unsigned error?

yes it will still give an unsigned error.
that is why you need to copy the apk which android market downloads to /cache before it deletes it, i copied it to /sdcard/download. then install via adb afterwards.
you have to manual install the apk to avoid unsigned error, once you have done this any future updates through market will be fine. Maps updated fine to 3.3 after i manually installed 3.2.1
How?

I downloaded the VoiceSearch.apk file and adb pushed it into /system/app on my phone and it works perfectly. The market sees it as installed and valid.
But I inspected my "normal" load phone (which has voice search) and nowhere could i see anything resembling "VoiceSearch.apk".

2.2, Modded Flash version and Hulu

UPDATE: It seems that this only works on the 2.2 roms that are de-odexed... It doesn't work on the plain one that first hit. It is confirmed to work in the following roms:
Sky Raider 2.2 You can just use his flash installer app on the SD card
Sky Raider 2.1
Sky Raider 2.0
Sky Raider 1.9b
Desensitize Sky Raider 2.2 by jitajt
Not sure how many of you follow the other areas of the site or not... anyways, the guys over on the nexus one area have been enjoying Hulu on their Froyo roms for a while now. I've only seen a couple HTC Inc folks in the original thread so maybe people just don't know about it...
Big thanks goes out to rcxquake as he's the one that created the modified version of flash.
Original instructions for Nexus one are here
Modified Directions (i'll expand these out after I do it again tomorrow):
1) (this step is not needed on Skyraider 2.2 as the author has already removed the installer file for you, he has also included the correct version of flash on the SD card) remove flash from your install... most likely it is in the /system/app folder, I hadn't run any flash sites yet so I simply renamed the install_flash_player.apk to install_flash_player.apkb Here's a quick set of instructions for you:
1) Connect phone and enable debuging mode.
2) open a command prompt and go into your sdk/tools folder. run "adb reboot recovery"
3) in the cmd prompt type in "adb shell"
4) On the phone once its loaded up recovery in to partitions menu and mount /system
5) in the adb shell type in "cd /system/app"
5) to rename the flash installer type in "mv install_flash_player.apk install_flash_player.apkb"
7) in ADB tell it "exit"
8) on the phone unmount system and data (not sure if this is necessary or not)Exit out of recovery and verify you don't have flash installed anymore under settings \ applications \ Manage Applications \ All applications.
2) Download the fixed flash version via rcxquake's thread to your pc and move it to your sd card(direct link to file)
3) Install the downloaded APK file via your favorite file browser (astro for example)
4) If you want to look at the full version of the website, you'll need to enable a special mode in the browser, here's the directions care of the original thread:
1. In the search/address bar of the android browser type "about:debug" without the double quotes.
2. Press Menu
3. Tap More>Settings
4. Go to UAString and change it to desktop.5) If you want to access the site without setting up the debug mode listed above, Adam B was awesome enough to utilize the Hulu widget page to create a premodded app that you can simply click and watch. Here's his original post and here's a direct link to his APK.
SIDE NOTE If you run his Hulu.apk app, your lock screen will not come up after using it... to remedy this you have to kill it with a task killer... I have emailed him to see if this is something that could be remedied.
Anyways, I hope this helps some others get this going...
I tried this, and read through all of the Nexus One thread, and I still get "Hulu requires Flash Player 10.0.22 or higher. Please download and install the latest version of Flash Player before continuing".
Tried it in recovery (adb install), Astro, and AppInstaller. It shows up as installed in Application Management but doesn't load on any website. The only thing that there was to install (that I could find) was "install_flash_player.apk" in /system/app/.
Hulu and 2.2, its Christmas in July!
Having to manually kill the app sucks but it's hulu on my Droid!
Only other issue really is the border in fullscreen mode.
Btw the app works great, if you can't get it to work try a reboot.

Do you need the app? It sounded like about:debug should cover it, but it doesn't really answer why other pages don't load Flash.

Yea thats the file you need to rename "mv install_flash_player.apk install_flash_player.apkb" then your all good.
so far i've only tested on the sky raider one... at the end of the day yesterday we tried the same steps on the regular 2.2 rom on an additional inc someone had at the office (the original full leak) and were unsuccessful. I'm going to flash my phone over to regular as I have an issue with sky raider and syncing, I'll see what I can come up with on getting to work on that one as well.
Works!

Asteroid, how did you get it working on the 8/1 leak? Did you simply remove install_flash_player.apk and install the modded flash player? I attempted to do so, and got the blue plugin icon on flash content.
I actually had a flash player installation backed up in Titanium that I had restored. I uninstalled that, just using regular old Uninstaller, and when I checked /system/app in root explorer, I didn't see any evidence of a flash install.
Then installed the modified version from Astro, made the "about:debug" changes mentioned, and we're up and running.
I'm not sure why, but maybe if you install the standard flash beta, uninstall it, then install the modified version that will work?

[ROOTING], Rooting HTC EXPLORER (A310e/PICO)

SOrry Guys Forgot 2 mention earlier. I moved To Xperia Mini Pro, So any1 else can take over and help PPL here taking hell outta there explorer
How to:
1. Download the files - "HTC Pico_Recovery,Boot with ext 2 3 4 support" , "BCM4330.KO" "superuser" from Below link,
"Superuser.zip" - http://www.4shared.com/file/KalrHXNj/Superuser.html
"Bcm4330.ko" - http://www.4shared.com/file/GbW0ZtaT/bcm4330.html
"HTC Pico_Recovery,Boot with ext 2 3 4 support" - http://www.4shared.com/zip/920-kXYc/HTC_Pico_RecoveryBoot_with_ext.html
2. Extract "HTC Pico_Recovery,Boot with ext 2 3 4 support" somewhere. say: desktop or some drive, copy "BCM4330.ko" onto ur adb "Tools" folder. Copy superuser.zip to ur Sdcard.
3. connect ur "Htc explorer(Pico) via USB" and open "recovery.bat from the folder u just extracted.
4. Wait relax, and watch ur device getting new underGarments. now as the time pass the "command Prompt" which just opened after opening "recovery.bat'' will show "adb reboot recovery" as the device boots to recovery, u will given new menu with blue fonts.
5. Now in recovery go to "Mount & Storage" and select "mount /system" with device connect via USB
6. I presume u have adb already setup on ur pc/laptop. Open "CMD" and type.
HTML:
adb shell mv -f /system/lib/modules/bcm4330.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4330.bak
adb push /full/path/to/bcm4330.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4330.ko
7. Now, select "unmount /system" from recovery menu (from where u earlier mounted /system)
8. select "goback" from below. now go to "install zip from SDcard. and and slect first open (which says choose zip from sdcard, or somthing like this). find the "superuser.zip" which u copied to ur sdcard and flash by selecting it.
9. Now if flashing goes smooth and it says "install zip from sd complete" then reboot ur device and enjoy.
For getting more space on ur device, download "link2sd"
For link2sd to work, i have attached tutorial for this (which i found by googleing) in Jpeg format (picture)
after getting link2sd to work , u can link the apps to sdcard and save more on device.
there is another option for getting more space on device.
Just download "terminal emulator" from market. pls note: u need to be rooted for this.
and give su permission to the app when prompted.
just enter
HTML:
su
pm setInstallLocation 2
now u will be taken to the next line and thats all
all ur apps will be installed to sdcard automatically. please note: when installing widgets, pls move them back to ur phone memory as they dont work on sdcard
Suggestion: You can pm me if you have some confusions or facing some problems rather than going some where else. I am always happy to help and there for the android community

The bat file kept waiting for the device infinitely. I just manually ran the two fastboot commands and the reboot command to setup recovery.
b. Copying superuser files:
Your method of extracting the zip file and then pushing them over to the /system directory will surely not work on windows systems, especially FAT32 file system computer, su file will not have executable rights when its copied into the dir.
right way is
copy superuser.zip to sdcard
boot into recovery
choose install from a zip option and point to that zip
Thanks for the post!

sorry i dont know this , may be google can help.
this method is only to root
Unfortunately I bricked mine too. Oddly everything was fine for a while. Until it starting giving a wi-fi error and after that I tried to fix it with a reset and after doesn't go any further than the HTC logo. Any thoughts in how to bypass this other than flashing a new rom? I kinda liked my stock and didn't backup.

Mine is locked and I tried a different network SIM and it worked fine. Can't guarantee for sure because I didn't tried before rooting.

sent ROM in PM
install it through recovery after wiping all cache and memory (recovery option)
everything works perfect, you have to install android market separatelly and reboot for it to work (at least me). Full reboot (untick the fast reboot from settings)
I am preparing a custom rom with preinstalled apps and without the chinese ones, i will be posting it soon.
I have a good news for HTC Explorer users'. My friend, he rooted it successfully. I'll post a translator tutorials about it for u all soon.
Now, Register a account on http://www.htcdev.com first

Only one at the moment in all the entire internet, it has preinstalled the "superuser" and a file browser (some more but not used as thay are not in english), but has the chinese version of the market so we have to install it separatelly.
Preparing another one

Here is Only ROM available YET!

The custom rom is ok so far... still I am kind of a noob. Or feel like one. Is there a way to install other languages to that rom, specially the systemlanguage? and how to customize the rom?
Sorry for asking dump questions
Just figred, after I installed Market, and try to install an app, crashes. telling me the process has endet unexpected. :-(
Should have stayed with my original... anyone has a backup of an original rom?

I didn't find any ROM but that one, managed to make android market work by rebooting the phone (full reboot, untick the fast reboot option)
dont know how to add new languaje (if possible)
to modify ROMs just eliminate the .apk you want from system/app inside the zip and add any you want, I just modified mine and added like 15 different apps (file explorer, Copilot, android market, music player, adobe flash...) and doesn't use any memory (just available ROM) you have around 50mb free . once you install it look for available memory left with programs like APPS2ROM (it doesn't work in our HTC but helps me see ROM memory left).
i am going to try now to add an app to ROM memory by just creating a .zip file with /system/app folders and the .APK in it, let see if it works
Yes I figured now, you have to reboot the phone. Works fine now. Already made a clean backup.
Ive seen a file which has many apps listed and SHA1 keys in it. hats why I am asking for howto cook your own rom. Let me know if it worked. Would be great if I could add and remove some stuff

I am afraid it doesn´t, ("Installation aborted" message in Recovery). I will look for a diferent way to do it, not as simple as making a .zip file with "system/app/**.apk"
You can still uninstall them from rom memory using apps like "rom uninstaller" in andoid market
EDIT: found a way around it , just add the .apk inside "/system/app" in the "superuser.zip" found in the first post
http://www.4shared.com/file/KalrHXNj/Superuser.html
you already have this app in your phone so there is no problem in reinstalling it everytime you like on top of it (it even is the "pro version" of superuser, not the one on the custom ROM)
everything perfect
just note that no ALL of the apps work perfectly in the ROM memory, some crashed when opening them and had to uninstall them using "rom uninstaller" and install them manually
(I found just 2 small ones)
Yes while experimenting I found rom uninstaller too. and I managed to get rid of Sense 3.5 and some other stuff.
I installed GO Launcher EX instead and it runs alo better and faster than Sense.
Even this is my first Droid, I love it. I will make some Screenshots of it as soon I am dne with work.
I thank XDA and all users for the great work. Now I need to figure out if there is a way to install more languages.
For all PMing me... Scroll up to find the ROM
Wifi Issue
Did anyone figure out why WiFi is not working?
We have not changed the kernel, so I don't understand the reason...

The funny thing is that it only affects the stock rom installed, I flashed the "superuser" after the custom rom and wifi works perfectly
Wifi
I guess the problem is with recovery.img that we flashed, if there is someone who has not touched it yet, can you take a backup of it?

[APP][4.0] Google Now for ICS Installer/Restorer [flashable Aroma Zip]

The Google Now Installer/Restorer v1.1
Purpose
There have been a lot of users with issues installing and uninstalling Google Now for ICS. This is my solution for those users.
This is only an installer for the many different variations of Google Now that were created in this news worthy thread: The Google Now for ICS Project
This installer allow user of different types of roms and devices to quickly install Google Now to see if it works for them and if it does not, it allows these users to restore their original Google Search.
This thread is not and will not be about issues with specific modded Google Now apks, go here: The Google Now for ICS Project for that. I have no problem incorporating new apks into the installer. But I will not attempt to deal with issues outside of the installer.
Testing(Green = working, Red = not working)
(Need more people to test as many different devices, roms, and recoveries)
Devices
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Roms
OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2-2.17.651.5
Tranquility rls1b
Recoveries
CWM 5.0.2.0
TWRP s-on
So if you experience any issues, I will attempt to help, but understand that I if you are not setup the exact same, I may not know what is wrong.
Touch recovery is not active in this aroma installer, so use up and down to make a selection and the power button to confirm the selection.
Requirements
Rooted
ICS
CWM (only recovery tested, others may work, you let me know)
Instructions(should already know this, but here you go)
1. Transfer .zip to the root of your sd card
2. Boot into recovery
3. Select "install zip from sdcard"
4. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Select "GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
6. Select "Install GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
Once the installer is up, the rest should be self explanatory, if not just follow the prompts.
I hope this helps someone.

I havent been following google now lately, but it seems that you're using stock rooted ics on evo where this works. is this also true for touchwiz phones?
will it work on stock rooted samsung?
Just checked it out on my HTC EVO 4g LTE running tranquility rls1b and TWRP s-on, works great back and forth. Thanks!

yes, but if I remember correctly, touchwiz differs from sense in framework files or something. I have epic 4g touch. can anyone else confirm that google now can work on stock rooted touchwiz phone if /system space wasn't an issue?

Sure, give it a try.
edit: there may be an issue with the Installer not finding the original Google Search apk, someone posted this and basically it states that you may have a some extra characters at the end of the apk.

I don't think it has anything to do with sense or touchwiz, the modified Google Now was modded for AOSP, which doesn't have either, but has worked on HTC and Samsung.

Since it won’t let me post to the forum I thought I would just do it this way. On my Verizon S3 I’m rooted, unlocked, OTA kernel, running a stockish rom (cleanrom) and CMW 6.0.1.2. The installer said it worked but it broke Google search. In the installer it said everything was fine but nope. I went to do the restore and it said it couldn’t find the backup so I went with the one provided and that worked fine. When setting up I chose the first one which I think was v7 for arm7. If I chose wrong I’ll try again but otherwise I’ll just wait for an updated version. Unlike others I’m in no hurry and was just testing it out on my phone. If you want more info I can try to install it again and try to provide whatever you might need or want.

What do you mean by it broke Google Search (what were the indications that it did not work)?
When you restored did Google Search work again?
Check if you hae the follow "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" in your "/system/app"
Are there other files with this same name?

How much space does it state that you have free in the /system directory?
It would seem that you don't have enough space in your /system directory of your internal memory.
One thing to try to see if this is the case, when you do it manually, don't modify or add any files to /system/usr/srec/ directory
larva_pro said:
if i go to settings>storage its says
Device memory: Total 1.97GB ; available 1.3GB.
i did installed manually with out changing nothing on the /system/usr/srec . and im able to opent he register of google now.. as soon i click im'in
it close and dont show nothing.

To get the total /system directory size you need to run the following command in a program like "Terminal Emulator" or "aShell":
df /system

Yes I have that GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app and yes it is without the _usa after it. On the line under it it has the odex version. Then the Google search widget apk and odex. It is this way with before and after I try to install.
Just tried it again choosing mikeyxda v7 it says created backup ok and return status 0. Google now installed return status 0 once the phone boots up it says “unfortunately, Google search has stopped”. I also get that message no matter how i try to search or tap on the google app it puts on it. Double checked the permissions from the main thread and all permissions are set right, if that helps. Went to restore and it says I never backed it up but I can use the generic one which I select and get again return status 0 for everything and once the phone comes back up Google search works just fine again. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I see that the problem has to do with your system being odexed.
The reason it FCs is because when replacing the Google Search apk there is no matching modified odex.
This is modified for deodexed roms.
Check on this thread and ask about a modified odexed velvet.apk and velvet.odex

I'm using GN on an odexed ICS ROM, no problems. Just had to delete the *.odex files for the apk's that the installer replaces.
