ok i am rooted but cannot seem to flash a custom rom. everytime i try to do it it takes me back to the clockwork mod recovery screen instead of the other regular one. i removed rom manager and clockwork off of my sd card but it still doesnt let me do it. i tried manually and using rom manager to flash a custom rom it wipes and restores but when it gets ready to load the rom it stops and takes me back to the recovery screen wtf.....please help me man im ready to throw this ****ing phone....arrrrrghh
You need to have "A" custom recovery installed. Currently there are only two that I am aware of; Clockwork's or Amon's.
You can flash a new recovery via adb but if you are unsure how to do that I would first try to see if you can do it through ROM Manager. ROM Manager is Clockwork's app but if you open it up and scroll to the bottom you will see an option to "Install Alternate Recovery." Selecting this will bring up the option to flash Amon's recovery.
If this is successful, make sure you have the "New.ROM.You.Want.To.Flash.zip" on the root of the sdcard and power down the phone.
Once off, hold the volume down button and then press and release the power button (still holding down the volume down button).
The phone should boot into a white screen with a few lines of text. At this point you can stop pressing the volume down button.
Using the volume up/down buttons to navigate the 4 options and the power button to select, select #2 recovery.
The phone will then boot into Amon's recovery which should be a black screen with green text.
Still using the volume up/down keys to navigate and the power button to select, first go to wipe and do a wipe of "erase data-restore," cache, and dalvik cache.
Once this is complete you can select "Return" to go back to the previous menu and select Flash Zip from SdCard.
Select the ROM.zip you want to flash and when finished reboot the phone.
Marvel at your new ROM
its greyed out. do i have to download amon recovery first?
Copy recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img to the root of your sdcard
start the terminal app or launch adb
su(press enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img(press enter)
reboot recovery(press enter)
ok i did this and it told me that it wasnt found and then when i typed in the reboot part it said not permitted.
You obviously did not use ok's instructions above, so what instructions or programs are you trying to use? Clockworks recovery always loads a zip file from the sd card as stated above. Also with this method you do not use a computer at all, maybe to get the zip file to the sd card.

Is Amon the factory? I just want to get my phone back to the factory setting. I tried to unroot my captivate using a one-click app, but it didn't remove the superuser privileges. Do I need to remove this clockworkmod first? If so where can I get this AMON file?
Sorry, I know I probably sound like a moron, but I am new to this Android crap.

no Amon is a custom recovery. try downloading the stock RUU from your service provider and using that. i am not sure if that will re-flash the recovery back to stock, but that is the only thing that i can think of to tell you to try.
I'm rooted, s-off and running AndroidRevolution HD, but for some reason my phone will not boot into CWM. Any suggestions? I'm coming from a Captivate and I noticed that there is no update.zip file on my sd card.
Did you turn fastboot off?

or if fastboot is on, tell your phone to reboot and hold the volume down button the whole time.
Fastboot is turned off. I've tried "Install ROM from SD Card" and "Reboot into Recovery" and still nothing. Very frustrating.

Rather than trying to enter recovery from ROM Manager, have you tried either:
A) With phone off, hold Volume - and Power until HBoot starts, then select recovery
B) With phone on, hold Volume - and choose Restart from the power menu, hold Vol - until HBoot appears, and choose Recovery
Hello all,
How can I confirm that CWM is installed in my phone? I just ran the CWM installation and I'm not quite sure if it installed succesfully. Thanks for any help!
Go into hboot and select recovery and see if it let's you in.

Just boot into the recovery and see if it loads up CWM.
Download Rom manager, and click reboot into recovery. Then it will reboot to CWM
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
- Go to Settings>Power, and uncheck "Fast boot". Then power off the phone.
- Once powered off fully, hold the volume down button, and press and release the power button. Keep the vol down button depressed until a white screen comes up with Android mascots along the bottom. This is hboot.
- From there, use the volume rocker to navigate up and down, and power to select. Select "Recovery".
If a black screen with blue text menus appears, you have CWM.
If you don't have CMW, a black screen with a symbol with a green circle will appear, and after a few seconds be replaced with a red exclamation mark.
thanks guys! got it!
I successfully rooted my cousin's AT&T infuse 4g using this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkD34zvS2P4&feature=related
Now I'm trying to do this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozNVeGPUlU8
I did everything and once I go into the 3E recovery... the "reinstall package" option DOES NOT APPEAR.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!
You need to flash a custom kernel using heimdall or sgs kernel flasher and that will put recovery on there for you

Bro bro br bro....thats doing it the hard way. Flash a custom kernel through odin or heimdale and that's it, you don't need that guide anymore.
Using modified 3e recovery is an old method (that can still be used, by the way). There is an easier way, though.
Assuming that you already have root, use SGS Kernel Flasher (from Play Store) to flash a custom kernel zImage that already has CWM recovery included. Doing it this way instead of Odin or Heimdall in download mode, you won't trip the custom binary download counter.

You won't have to remove anything that you've done so far. I'll be glad to point you in the right direction. Before I give you links, etc., though, is the phone completely stock (2.2 firmware) or has it been upgraded to Gingerbread (2.3.6)? Also, what is the end goal? Is there a specific firmware that you would like to flash? All of that plays into what kernel you need to flash.

Its 2.3.6 and I rooted it by following everything in the 1st video of my first post.
The goal is to run this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705503
My cousin just wants it to run smoothly since he complains about how it crashes and has to do battery pulls A LOT. He was the one who picked the rom (goal) since it appeals to his eyes and likings. He doesnt know much about all this stuff.
So he wants to run that rom ^^^ and I guess I want a kernel thats stable and doesnt need to be highly overclocked to run good.

Since you've found SGS Kernel Flasher, getting CWM recovery will be easy. Extract the zip file for the kernel that you download from HERE. Using SGS Kernel Flasher, browse to the zImage inside of the zip file, and then flash. The phone will reboot, and before it boots back into Gingerbread, a lady robot voice will talk to you for a few minutes while Voodoo lagfix is enabled. This is Zen Arcade's Infusion-Z kernel and it comes with red CWM. Be sure to thank Zen for his kernel HERE. The phone's Gingerbread firmware will run well on this GB kernel, but you'll be using it just to get recovery to flash a rom.
Flashing the ICS rom that you have chosen will take two flashes, since you're coming from Gingerbread.
Download the rom zip. Put the rom zip on the internal sdcard, and then shut the phone off. Then, hold the power button and both volume buttons. When you see the Samsung logo, release the power button and continue to hold the volume buttons until you enter red CWM recovery. Choose "install zip from sdcard" (using the volume keys) and press power to select. Then select "choose zip from sdcard" and choose the rom zip. Confirm your choice and flash. When the flash is finished, go back to the main menu and select "reboot system now".
At this point, the phone will hang at a screen with the Galaxy S logo and won't boot anything. That's normal. Hold the power button and both volume keys. The phone will turn off for a moment. Keep holding power and both volume keys. When you see the Samsung logo, release the power button and continue to hold the volume keys until you are in blue CWM recovery. In blue recovery, choose "mounts and storage"; then "format system", "format data", and "format cache". Go back and select "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard" to flash the rom zip again. After the rom flash, go back and select "reboot system now". The phone should boot into the new rom.

What is the custom binary download counter. I noticed that my count was at 6 when I went into download mode yesterday. Does it turn into a pumpkin when that number reaches xxx. Thanks.

It just counts how many times you've flashed something with a custom kernel in download mode. In theory, AT&T or Samsung would use this to determine whether or not the warranty is void on the device due to customer tinkering. To reset it to zero, you can use my UCLB3 Unbrick in Odin. To keep from triggering it, just avoid using download mode to flash anything that involves a custom kernel. If you use CWM recovery, the Infuse Toolkit, SGS Kernel Flasher, or flash_image with adb (or in a terminal emulator app) to flash a custom kernel, the counter isn't triggered.

Thanks jscott30! You've helped me a lot! I've been trying to root my Infuse for months and doesn't work, now with your method it worked perfectly! But the rom still have some "side-effects" but it's still great! What good stable roms you recommend?
Howdy I have a older AT&T Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5113 SGH-i497 Android 4.2.2
I followed the steps on forum thread Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Development -->(ODIN + CWM 6 + ROOT + Stock) ATT / TMOBILE Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 {} {SGH-T779} by Childofthehorn
Well I made it through step 5, at least! (Odin displays green “Passed!”)
But the following steps:
6. Backup your existing image
7. Flash SuperSu from SDcard
8. WInning.
here's where I'm at:
(see attached)
strangely there is no button for attachment on the Editor Are attachments allowed on this forum? Peculiar!
Only choices on the Recovery screen are
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
Don't know how to "back up your existing image"
or "Flash SuperSU from SDcard."
(but I do have the SuperSU apk on the SDcard though; do I select "apply update from external storage"?)
How do I know I have root? Odin said "Passed!" in green, but I'm not sure what that entails. -- I don't want to use any of those root checkers on Google Play because they all appear to ad-filled junk.*
Do I have CWM 6 by this process? How can I tell?
Is it possible to upgrade to KitKat? or is the P5113's processor not capable of it (or something else prevents having KitKat)
Not sure what I should do next.
Thanks everyone!
After Odin says Passed did you let the tab reboot to the ROM? If so the ROM probably replaced CWM with stock recovery (stock ROMs tend to do this), so what you need to do is flash the recovery again via Odin, but once it completes immediately reboot to recovery using the key combination, do not let the ROM boot. Once the recovery has loaded it should automatically disable the recovery replacement system in the ROM, and you'll be able to proceed to step 6.

Do you uncheck Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time? With those enabled all Odin said was Reset! in blue.
For the 3rd step:
Childofthehorn says:
3. Open Odin (as administrator) and hit the "PDA" button, remember to uncheck the reset
I assume he means F. Rest Time in the Odin options tab
Seems to reboot immediately after Odin finishes, happens too fast; there's no time to reboot into recovery mode with the power+vol.

Just follow what the instructions said, but uncheck Auto Reboot. Then, once Odin is done, force reboot the tab by holding both power and vol button down for about 10 secs (until it reboots), then release the power button while still holding the vol button.
