accessing root folder files - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

hi guys....
quick question... i have a star note a9220... a generic android 4.0 phone... and everytime i set a ringtone from one of the sd cards whenever i access the cards from my pc or just use it to charge my phone it returns everything to default... is there a way to access the root directory so that I can add some better ringtones to the default list??? i dont really want to start messing about with the os... do i need to root it or can i use an app?

To access the root directory or system files, your phone needs to be rooted. I don't think there is any better way than that.

You can use SuperOneClick to root your device temporarily. The root access survives until reboot. After that your device would become normal. Do this and push your ringtones to relevant location using Root Explorer. Then, reboot.

is there a version of super one click that supports android 4?
otherwise any idea's how to root it while keeping 4.0?
plus any idea's how to install and run stuff from the external card? the way it's set up is 512mb as system 2gb in sd and 16gb "usb" which is my external card... 2gb just isnt enough...
Thanks peeps

Rooting doesnt change your android version
It will still be 4.0 after rooting
1 - Just root with superone click
get a free explorer which can access root directories
copy your desired Ringtones and paste them into media/rindtone folder (or where every you rom stores the ringtone)
2 - go to setting, then developement and check Install from unknown sources tick box
then use a Explorer, find the apk files downloaded from internet and install by clicking
3 - 2 GB is more then enough for about 500 apps
i think you'll be good to go for about some time until its become low

that wasn't it...
the "latest" version of super one click from the official site tries to root 2.2/2.3... that's what it says... which was why I was asking if there's a version for 4.0...
and the 2gb thing.... I listen to various podcasts etc and I can't seem to download them onto the 16gb card... it doesn't like it... but that's beside the point...
I have a few apps which came installed natively like docs to go, and fm radio etc which I would like to remove...
I might as well full root it and try to get a blank 4.0 rom.... just need to try to remember how to do it! :s

not sure which 9220 copy you have, just check on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646544 it has links to other 9220 copies, then find the yours
as I know, the simple way to check is your rom model number to ensure the right rom, patches... to flash

[Q] new sensation user, few concerns/questions.

hi i've upgraded my hd 2 to the sensation( i had windows on it). and it's a god send!
i've got a few concerns/ questions
1. biggest concern - backups.. i have a stock tmobile usa sensation.. what is the best app/ way to do a COMPLETE image (all settings/info, programs, pics, messages etc..)is there away? i use acronis for all my pc's which is just awesome. anything happens i plug in external drive, and everything is back to date.
2. rooting, i hear people talking about it... what are the benefits? if one roots there sensation do they have to start over? meaning a image would not work?
3. apps. i 've bought a bunch of apps, and installed a bunch of free ones from the phone. how do i back all these up? and save them?
4. EMAIL notifications, i have 2 email accounts, personal, and business, anyone know of way to set customized ringtones/sounds for each INDIVIDUAL email account?
5. how do i access the phone files so i can add my own notification sounds, instead of the factory ones? i'm not finding an option to look on SDcard and use my own for notifications.
Thanks for any help with these concerns.
your apps are bundled to your google account. There's a list of what you bought/downloaded already. If you wipe your phone, you can simply put them back through web.
good to know, ty!
Out of curiosity, is there away for me to get the installers as well? so i can back them all up on my server?
Anyone else have info on other questions please?
1. You can Temp. root right now( which means you will lose root if you reboot), perm root is not available yet (Hopefully soon), so temp root and use the application from the market call titanium back-up , you can back up all system, apps and personal settings to your SD card. As far as backing up pics they are already on your SD card so if you want to back those up back them up to you personal computer.
Link to Temp-root
2. Rooting benefits are removing bloatware apps installed by your service provider that you don't want, use custom Roms and root apps, increase speed and performance and battery life etc.....
Cons of rooting- you could seriously Eff up your phone if you don't know what your doing, void warranty etc....
3. See answer #1 also you can back them all up on your Google account.
4. As far as i know there is no way to set up different notification sounds for two separate email account, only one choice for notification sounds.
5.Install a file manager from the market like "Astro" to explore your sdcard, with temp root or perm root you can use "Root Explorer" and browse and change system files as well as the SD card files.
If you want to add notification sounds you can also select the personalize button on the far right side of the Rosie launcher and then select "Sound Set" and download new notification sounds.
Add ringtones check out this link....http://maketecheasier.com/add-custom-alarm-ringtone-in-android/2010/01/08
Hope this helps you with some of your questions.....
Thanks joemm
thanks for detailed info... one question on rooting if i may. Can i root without loosing everything i've done? meaning root it, download, use titanium. and know i'll be good to go.
Thanks
Yes, temp rooting will not touch any of your settings or apps. So temp root then back up with titanium backup, it will even back up each apps settings too, like a certain level your on in a game or saved search results etc...
thanks alot.. will attempt this tonight!

ES will work just the same....
No need to temp root now....perm root is out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
i think this may beyond me. i tried the temp. i think it's the temp.. steps i took
downloaded rw sensation from post #1 on link you provided.
unzipped
installed htc sense on win 7 machine double clicked Run_ME_Fr3vo_ROOT
ran a bunch of commands. once done it said hit any key to continue
then i went to phone transferred superuser file to storage card /installs, installed that. then went to superuser and it says no apps.
so not sure how to uninstall the default apps.
in Es file explorer i did notice i can see the system files now.
questions. may i ask how i permanently root this thing? (all i want to do is remove stock apps, and do backups. i 'm to old for the custom rom stuff. and to be honest don't have the time to be testing/doing custom roms anymore.)
after i accomplish the permanent root, what steps are needed to remove stock apps? (special programs, commands?)
and then what steps are needed to just do a backup, and finally enjoy this phone with out worries of lockups, crashes, etc...
and thirdly what are the steps to get all apps off my htc sensation onto my main machine so i have them backed up.
Sorry for not understanding fully. ive spent 4 days setting this up to my liking, buying what i need. and just want to be able to backup everything, and not worry bout it. like i can with all my pc's via Acronis image.
thanks for any clarification.
still yet to get my sensation permanently rooted... is this the most recent guide that will work with my Tmobile USA sensation?

Grrrr. im getting to old for this stuff, (not on pc's as much anymore) when i was younger this stuff came easy to me.
i downloaded first file (revolutionary) did the steps. OF COURSE IT HANGS ON MINE)
so i went to post 2. it wasnt detailed for lamens.. so i uninstalled htc sync on phone and windows 7 32 bit. then i went to this post unrar'd files. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161769&highlight=htc+driver and have no clue what to do next...
so now i sit, with those files on my windows 7 machine, no htc sync on phone or windows 7 machine. ideas please?
yes i read this post... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16143324&postcount=11
but they dont tell me where i should make temp folder (on phone or pc?)
who wants to make a quick $20.00?
If not enough let me know amount. i'm done with this. i just want to backup my phone in it's entirety, i want to backup my apps to HDD location of my choice on my pc. I want to do an image (just like an acronis, or norton ghost) of my sensation to HDD location of my choice on my pc. Like i use to be able to do with my SPV's, HD2's.
Pm Me. and let's get this done!
Thank you!

Installing apk games on sdcard (new to android)

Hello everyone.
I recently got a Xperia L, and it's my first android device, so I'm still new to this.
So I bought a 16gb sdcard (class 10) so I could install more games and apps and stuff in the card, but I read somewhere that with the 4.1.2 version you can't do that, only videos and images. Then I heard about this root thing that would make us able to install games in the sdcard with usb connection and stuff like that, so I did root my phone following some guides and got the root checker app and it says that I have root access.
So my question is what to do next? Because my sdcard has only a LOST.dir folder and 2 other files, don't see any android folder or anything else, so I can't install games in the sdcard. I googled everything but can't seem to find any solutions to my problem, I don't really know what the problem is, maybe the sdcard or the root. Sorry I'm really new to this
Thanks in advance

Hm don't know how to change permissions of the script inside the filemanager :s
QUOTE=popino01;45824488]Hm dont know how to change permissions of the script inside the filemanager :s[/QUOTE]
You must have installed some file manager which allows you to reach root files.(You must be rooted,of course...).(I use Root Explorer).Navigate through system files and when you find the file you want long press on it and choose (in Root Explorer) Permissions.A window will open with a horizontial column which has 3 parameters (Read,Write,Execute) and a vertical one with Owner,Group and Others. In our case rw-r-r means that you must check Read and Write for the Owner column and Read for the other two.Hope I helped...
Ok I'm able to load games that are installed on the sdcard/android/data, but the obb files that go on the obb folder I can only install them in the internal memory, in the sdcard they dont seem to work :s

[Q] Storage Spirit Rom

Hello,
I have a Gt-I9105P and am interesting from few times about Root, Rom....
I did the root and installed Spirit Rom 4.4.4, version 1.6 and everything seems OK. Faster, battery life better....
but I have 2 problems, not importants but disturbing :
1) How can I have set my SD card as storage by default when I do some pictures ?
2) I cannot "cut" my files from device storage/SD card to SD card /device storage...I have to connect my phone to pc and do it on....
Someone can help me please to set my phone ?
Thanks a lot
Corse62
ps: I am not english so sorry for eventuals mistakes.
Can't remember what camera application the Spirit ROM has, but if you can't find in it's settings to make the save on your sdcard, download another camera application from Google Play Store that has this option, or installing xposed installer and a mod for it called Picture2SD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-installer-versions-changelog-t2714053) .
Here is the Thread of this Mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-pictures2sd-v1-0-6-makes-camera-t2408880
Conclusion: is not a ROM related issue.
As for moving files from internal to external storage, you have to be sure that you rooted your phone and have a working superuser. You can use this application to see if you have the phone rooted:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck
To do the moving (cutting) use a file manager such as this ones:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.explorer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop
If you grant them root permmision, it should be no problem (as long as the files you want to move are not system files).
Our device has a complete guide about rooting here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303395
I wish you all the best.
Yes my phone is root. Thanks for you help, it works :good: .

[Q] Anyone rooted a Alcatel a564c yet?

I got this alcatel a564c from tracfone and wondered if anyone has rooted this phone? I have seen some old threads asking about it but not much about developing.
I have tried kingo root and I am trying others but other posts have said none work. The last one in November.
I am interested in any info on finding an exploit that I could test out. I dont have experience developing a root but I could learn.
Thanks!
Try the framaroot application. That application works for many devices. My Alcatel got rooted too

I tried it before but I just tried the latest 1.9.3 version. No good. Thanks though.
Using x-plore file manager you can download movies and what not to sd card. I have this phone and have downloaded numerous movies and software directly to sd card. Something about backdooring kitkat, this may or may not help with rooting but it does help to eliminate the 4gig headache.
I have set all the download locations to my 16gb sd card. But installed apps use only the 4gb provided. I have a tendency to fill that. There are also some issues with the default apps setting getting reset. And I can not use google voice over wifi without a cell connection.

No, seeing the root of the SD card does not mean that you have root access to Android itself

It's crazy that as long as this phone has been out......there's still no root for it. It's a shame that Google decided to "fix" the security issues that most of us never even knew existed by limiting what we can use as default app storage with no way to bypass the restriction unless you have root access. Hopefully someone comes up with the solution soon or I'll be thinking of exchanging my Alcatel A564C for something I can actually use.

[Q] Cannot access SD-Card in Galaxy Core 2 SM-G355H ?

Hello folks, i have Galaxy Core 2 SM-G355H and i have rooted my phone and installed the CWM recovery, which i think has done good.
Even the phone after being rooted hasn't done me any good.
I had initially started a topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-core/help/copy-to-ssd-samsung-galaxy-core-2-sm-t3033178
But the OP hasn't been able to give me some working solutions.
So i am asking to anyone who knows about this stuff. I have rooted and installed CWM recovery, that still given me authority
over my SD-Card, i cannot copy/paste/delete/rename basically access it fully.
The only way i can do is, remove the SD-Card and insert in a Card reader and copy/paste/delete etc.
But i cannot directly do from phone itself.
I already have fX Explorer, Solid explorer and ES File Explorer.
Nothing has worked, so i am asking can anyone show me how to do that.
I would be grateful for your suggestion.
Awaiting reply.

The FS /system and other too is/are readonly (ro) in device, so if u want to delete or copy inside this partition u must change it to rw (readwrite), it's better for you to use some Explorer root based application like FX Explorer with root addon ...
If u have copied the update zip to extSdCard and run the update procedure in stock recovery U should be able to copy/edit/delete files on your extSdCard - Card if the install were sucessfull.
For a check: Install app https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=nextapp.sdfix and check again things now U'r rooted. Regards

I have already installed at least a dozen of explorer, most promising was fx explorer with it free root access add-on, the other was ES File
explorer. They both can't copy/paste files to Memory card.
My device is Galaxy Core 2 SM-G355H, Android 4.4.2. I have already rooted and installed CWR mode, but i havn't flashed my firmware.
I am searching now for a possible firmware update, that could access memory card.
Could you do a small part from your side and find a firmware that can be flashed in my device, i will try from my side. :good:

All of the stock firmwares uses KK RO acess for SdCard unless U install some custom & fixed ones.
Have also provided many tutorials in the subforums detaily how to fix it for GC2 models.
Latest firmwares uses some extra functionality regarding SDCards, fix will not work unless ...

OK, thanks for the statement. I accept, i am a newbie here. I can figure my way through most of the other forum out there.
But one pertaining to Mobile device require's little more knowledge, because its tricky, since there are a huge number of devices.
I am not a regular visitor.
Anyways, i found a firmware for my device.
Link:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G355H/
http://samsung-updates.com/details/42605/Galaxy_Core_2/SM-G355H/INS/G355HXXU0AOC1.html
The second link to the firmware matched the hashes to the link in the first link.
Did the Odin thing, and all the necessary steps. But still i am not able to copy/paste/delete etc function.
So i technically give up for this device, i'll use it as it is.
@StratOS_HTC: I tried the KitKat access app from Google Play store, a number of them. But they all showed similar results.
But i'll be open to your opinion.
Thank you.:good:

As said and will said again :
Please read carefully !
Hope your phone works ok and everything else on phone is ok.
If you can't access your extSdCard throught phone do a low level format ( and hope you don't use 64 GB ).
Hope also you don't use any other EXT partition on your sdcard. or any other sd linkage or swap options on your sdcard
Format the sdcard as only extFAT or FAT on any other comp card reader and reformat it on the phone !
Now you should be able to access the sdcard on your phone if every thing else on phone is ok.
If U'r rooted on stock ( KitKat sdcard restriction ) and if U have installed nextapp.sdfix and grant su access to it the app will change this permissions for you and you will be able to aceess rw to sdcard now.
