Laggy and crashy, and that's on stock! - T-Mobile LG G2x

So I'm not new to rooting and custom roms. I am on a Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Bugless Beast Jelly Bean) and relied heavily on custom roms to keep my OG Moto Droid relevant after they stopped updating it at Froyo. I am however, hardly the type to have any idea how to code or compile, or any of that good stuff, so CWM and zip files are my friend.
What I need is a fix for a problem on my wife's G2x. Even on the unrooted stock OTA release, she was having significant lag, freezing, and crashes. I talked her into rooting and now it's even worse. Memory leaks are my best guess, but it's reaching a state of unusability.
My question, or request is more accurate, is I need to figure out a fix. I've looked at overclock kernels, and I probably will as soon as I have time with her phone again, but I'm worried about stability. She doesn't need all the fancy custom stuff, and really doesn't want most of it. Definitely not an ICS rom that's not 100% functional (no camera would prevent her from taking pictures of our cats so that's right out). Even losing the alarm tones that come on stock was unacceptable to her...
I'm just trying to find a stock-like rom, but better. Fast, reliable, consistent.
Any ideas?
Incidentally, a custom rom would probably be fine as long as it doesn't deviate too far from the stock UI, but if I do that I need a way to transfer her alarm tones. May be easy, but like I say I don't have much knowledge beyond how to flash a zip.

I guess for close to stock, it does offer a pile of customization features though, but you could try CM7. Its the closest to stock, but it fast, super stable, and near perfection.

I would suggest CM7 as well and you can run supercharger

Any advice on how to transfer the alarm notifications? I haven't researched this all that much, saw a post elsewhere that mentioned just copying the files out of the notifications folder, which is certainly easy enough.

I'm assuming these are sounds? If so take all your files and copy them into system>media>audio>alarms. And rename the file extension to what all the others in that folder are, but first try it without renaming the file extension. The folder placement might be different as I'm on ics and not CM7, but it should be close. This should work, but if it doesn't I wouldn't know any other way as I've never did it before.

Infuse Roms?

Hello everyone i just signed up and i own a Samsung Infuse 4G and ive been flashing some roms on it lately and i want to know in your opinion what is the best rom.
i tried zeus, and i like it but i hate build 5.2 and build 6, because of the fact that wallpapers do not scroll. live wallpapers do, but static ones do not. I love build 3 fixed for ZEUS because it has scrollable wall papers and the app drawer is transparent. i dont like the black background when looking through my apps i like it see through.
but, being build 3 it freezes quite a bit. i tried CM7, didnt like it. i want to try something else.
I hate flashing roms and testing them because every time i restore it gives me an error saying "No sdcard/.android.secure Found. Skipping restore of SD card apps." so i have to re install 1 by 1 the apps with titanium backup and its really annoying. once i reach my 10 post mark i will start to post in the developers thread but this is all i can do now.
in a rom in need stability, no freezing no non working elements, all that.
clean, simple and crisp.
no dumb animations to lag the os and use mass ram. clean simple and fast. id even use gingerbread with touchwiz 4.0 like on the samsung galaxy s 2 skyrocket LTE that has a very good stock OS. maybe there is a way to put that on my infuse? I want to try s.u.r.f.a.c.e. rom but that's a hard way to flash it
any suggestions?

You can always Port your own ROM. Just saying.
If all you don't like about ZEUS is the launcher's look, then you can use one of the alternative launchers available off Market... err Play... or whatever Google is calling its new and improved more privacy breaking app download thing.
Off hand, the two I can think of are GOLauncher and PhoenixLauncher. I currently use GOLauncher on ZEUS and like it quite a bit, plus it's free. I think I'm going to give PhoenixLauncher a go after some of the bugs are worked out.

I agree, and also I'd recommend GoLauncher as I use it on Zeus build 5.2 and love it. Give it a Try!
I don't like those launchers iv tried them, I like touch wiz 4 which Zeus build 3 has, so I am using this for now.
Has anyone flashed the s.u.r.f.a.c.e rom?

Yerp on the surface rom...super lite...has lots of add on apps...smooth,stable....
The reason that wallpapers don't scroll is a SAMSUNG issue, not a Zeus issue, a change they made in the new gb leaks, so they wont change, on any rom built from that leak. Build 3 is no more and outdated, so if you don't want another launcher I suggest keeping build 3 because I removed it from the server. And tw 4 is way too buggy and unstable, that's why it was removed and will not return.

Alright thanks,
And now I understand that about Zeus,
But anyway great job with it its still an awesome rom. I'll try to flash s.u.r.f.a.c.e
How can I flash surface from my current position (Zeus build 3 with the ruxk kernel)?
Thanks for your replies

Well I'm currently running Z.E.U.S Rom Build 6. When I was stock GB (for the short time that was) I used the TouchWizz 4.5 Launcher, and I'm using it now. Scrollable wallpapers plus you can flash icon themes. Here is the XDA Thread Link:

And the download itself:

From what i understand...its bad to restore all apps from TB, as some may not be compatible with other roms due to missing or added files
At least if your restoring the data part too

Whats your favorite feature on your Rooted S3?

While I sit here and contemplate if I should jump ship and unlock my S3, I am curious to know what other rooted users would say their favorite feature/benefit has been since unlocking the phone (compared to what was unavailable on stock). This phone is pretty solid as it is and a complete [email protected]$$ with its performance. I wonder how much better can it get.
What else is there other than running various roms and OC?
Custom recovery is always my favorite feature. I am fearless as long as I don't do anything to hinder my ability to reach recovery. Flash an incompatible kernel and device no longer boots? Holy sh- oh wait no everything's fine since I can restore everything right from the device while I'm nowhere near my PC. Revolutionary!
Custom recovery, google wallet, titanium backup, just to name a few.
The ability to change things in general. Android is open source at heart, which means that I get to buy something and tweak it the why I want it.
Honestly my favorite aspect is simple, toggle mods i love them and first thing i always change on roms
Just getting rid of all the annoying wifi notifications was enough reason to root for sure
Since your question was pertaining to what you can do since we've had boot loader unlocked vs what you could do before, the answer is flash custom ROMs and kernels with much ease and satisfaction. We could before but its much much simpler now. Unlocking this phone is strictly a ROM thing I'd say.
As great as they all are, tibu being my favorite one, everything posted in this thread so far was all possible before unlocking boot loader, and I didn't think that's what you were wanting to know. No offense to anyone.
If the question were about before rooting......the answer would be much much different.

Should I update to ICS?

Would it be worth it? What are some bugs people have experienced with it? Is the battery life better or worse than it is on Gingerbread? Thanks in advance for answering

Same for me. I initially upgraded to stock ICS and removed a bunch of the bloatware. Then I started using CM10 and haven't looked back since! I love all of the additional features/customization options that roms like this give you.

Double that here. I used stock ICS for an absurd amount of time, finally got around to rooting it, and recently talked myself into giving CM10 a whirl.
Glad I did. So far the only complaint I really have is the profiles settings do not currently have a way to disable vibration if you turn the ringer off. This is a CM wide bug from what I read on the net. But hey, look at it this way, ICS doesn't even have profiles!
I'd be skeptical about battery life estimations though, invariably people use their phone more when they have a new rom...from tinkering with it all the time, or not trusting it so they check the phone more often. I'm not saying there are not differences, just saying they are usually slight in reality, and it's up for debate if they mean anything in the long run.
While you can use google now with ICS, it's an inferior version. Google now is a great reason to upgrade to a Jelly Bean rom if you ask me.

All those satisfied with g2x GTFIH

Now i know LG abandoned this ship. I'm just as pissed off as the next guy about that one. I wouldn't mind an official jb or at least an ics update. But either way, I'm honestly quite satisfied with this phone and its performance. I'm running standard cm7 nightlies (latest) with Trinity t15 kernel and wolf script mod. Battery life is decent and bad when i whore wifi but that's the biggest iissue with my g2x. With all the hate threads around this forum there have to be others who have positive experiences with this device.
This phone is awesome. Since I started carrying around my portable nuclear power plant all my battery issues are gone.
Seriously though, if you use the phone the battery will drop. That is a law of physics you can't avoid. My problem with this phone was that with stock ROM the battery dropped a lot even when I did absolutely nothing. CM7 solved that, so I am happy.
I still don't get sufficient standby life so I am working on fixing an old HTC amaze (fixed bootloop, now waiting for screen to arrive). My wife's amaze can get over 4 days of standby and I just noticed that she has not rebooted it in close to 400 hours.
-- The noob says:

4 days of standby time? Sorry this is the g2x forum I don't know what that means.
Lol that's crazy!
I have about six months left until I'm available for an upgrade. Thinking the new s4, razor or nexus.
I agree this is still a pretty slick phone. I'm loving the dual boot setup with CM7/Trinity ELP as my runner and CM10.1 as my gaming/test platform. I'd probably be way more disappointed with the phone if I was stuck with stock software, but thanks to the awesome devs and their work I'm very happy with this phone.

I am currently running cm7 with Mazout360's kernel and wolfscript. I have themed my phone to be as similar to ICS/JB as possible, as that was the only way I could return to GB. I am very content with how it turned out.
In the end, I have accepted that I will probably never have fully functioning ICS or JB on this phone. But, I guess all that I was really looking for was that updated look and crisp feel, which I have since obtained!
Although I will move on to some sort of Nexus when I have better funding, I am satisfied with the g2x.
The only problem I seem to have with cm7 is this noticeable static flicker that appears very quickly after turning on the display. It only seems to do that with cm7 roms.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but is it possible to get the jellybean notification bar on gingerbread? Like with notifications you can swipe away and quick message replies to texts and all that. That might be the only thing keeping me on jellybean right now because I love the way it feels so intuitive and such.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I can swipe away notifications, that's something GB can do already I think. As for quick replys to messages and emails and such, I don't think so.
At least as far as I know.
I miss those features too, but I guess we can't have everything.
There are apps for pop up notifications though.
I can also swipe away notifications. Actually i found that out on mistake, had a few too many whisky cokes and tried responding to a text and swiped it away lol

Oh I went straight from Froyo on my old Optimus V to Jellybean on the G2X (I rooted and installed Paranoid Android right away) so I thought swipe notifications was a Jellybean thing. I'll install a Gingerbread ROM when I get back from work and try to make it look and feel like JB.
On topic, yes I'm very satisfied with my G2X, but that might also be because I wasnt expecting a high end phone when I bought it from eBay a few months ago. Also I have a Nexus 7 for any apps that I use that require a hardware accelerated jellybean.

AFAIK swipe notifications is a CM7 thing in GB ROMs.

For those of you who are content with cm7, even though it is old software, I am working on my "Speedster" rom. It is still quite alpha but my goals is to optimize CM7 for our G2xs. I am also doing a bunch of software updates inside and using Mazkrnl to have speed and stability. I use the latest ADW launcher in it and JB sounds so it really gives CM7 new life and gives it a great CM10 feel. I can't do anything about play store, still limited to 2.3 aps. No google keep/now

[Q] good stable Rom?

i just got my blaze back from being broken and theres alot of new roms out and they all look good. but i want to know some of yalls set ups. whats some good stable roms ?? please let me know and thank you
i rooted mine, and within 5 minutes had cyanogenmod on it. i'm a sucker for some cyanogen.
so far it's very fast, very stable. haven't had an issue yet.
replaced the stock camera with ICS camera and ICS gallery. a little slower, but no sdcard issues.
this morning i had bluetooth streaming to my helmet, wifi downloading maps, and txt messsages all blazing through it. really is a nice phone. and cheap too !
I'm using Racing11696's AOKP and have no complaints!

After finally mustering the courage to root I flashed CM10, and it was seamless, man. Aside from the occasional force close it was absolutely perfect. I just flashed LiquidSmooth and so far its running fairly well (keeping a backup of CM10 just in case ) It seems to me Liquid has more options for customization and has some pretty useful tools built into the ROM instead of going third party, but it just doesn't feel like it runs quite as smooth. Customization and tools, or a seamless UI, that is the question.
