Such a broad question dude it truly depends on what your phone likes best a well as you. As some may prefer this ROM others may prefer another ROM.
Also depends on ROM,Kernel combo as well try em all and see what's best to your desires.

this. there's no way to answer this question. each phone/user are different. there are far too many options for rom/kernel combinations, not to mention all the variable settings to say which is best.

I can't believe how many threads like this there are....there have to be at least 50 with this exact same topic..

Like has been said, there are many options. Probably the most popular is cyanogenmod, but I've been hooked on Paranoid Android for awhile (which is based on CM). My advice for a beginner is to spend time in the forums and narrow it down to the popular ones. Subscribe to a few and get into the discussions so you get to know the lingo and issues people are having with the ROMs. Try several out to get a feel of what they have to offer and the features you find you enjoy having.
Once you are familiar with the features you prefer, you can narrow down your perfect fit by reading the OP of a ROM (for what it offers) and a few of the posts from the latest update date (for stability and what to expect). I'd suggest only after this stage that you get into trying different kernels with your ROM. The kernel is like changing engines in your car...YMMV, and some will perform better than others on your specific device and ROM.
Hope this helps!

Agreed, you have to try some out and pick your favorite. If you ask 20 people on this section by PM randomly I bet you'd get at least 5-6 different answers.
SkyICS + Venom depending on your personal taste get my vote right now for multiple reasons, but the biggest being support and production. A vast majority of the roms that have come out for this phone have never/rarely been updated (no offense intended, people have lives, things happen, you get new phones, etc...).
Often, the stock ROM is the best since at least all the phone's capabilities are accounted for. More often, a rooted stock ROM is better since you can freeze bloatware, get around tethering restrictions and the like. Beyond that, it's kind of up to you to do your homework to make sure that a particular ROM does everything you need it to do (Bluetooth streaming, both cameras work, etc) and that you like the layout.
On a side note......
Q: What's the best way not to spam the board?
A: You don't post the same question in multiple sections.
Please don't do it again. Thank you.
Running venom right now and very pleased.

I've been enjoying Ice Cream Sandwich - Multiple Flavors. While I'm tempted to try some of the other ROMs out there, this one is really great.
It's the overclocked version, I scored a AnTuTu benchmark of 7284.
Does anybody when and or when I can drop Android 4.0.x on my baby?

[Feeler] Flash and forget ROM?

I'm thinking of building a ROM of sorts, and I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in it.
The ROM would basically be what i run on a daily basis. A combination of a ROM and Kernel that work well together, with my own tweaks, changes, and settings baked right into it.
The idea would be that you would flash the rom, then forget you ever did. No changing frequency, no profiles, no Undervolting, no flashing other kernels, just the ROM and nothing else needed. (and I'd discourage trying it)
I would change UV settings to work on most phones, and a small overclock (most likely a 1.1 or 1.2Ghz), as well a stock Frequency/Voltage version. and each version would be stable enough to use as a daily driver.
It would most likely be a 'Flavor of the week' kind of thing, and I'll most likely change the base rom/kernel somewhat frequently (like once a month at most) to what I'm using that's stable.
So, does this sound good to anyone, or am i building for a demographic that's not there?
I would use it if u make it for the photon

sounds like a great idea... in this trend of rapidly developing roms, a stable rom with recent source changes for a change is great to fallback to.
Do you have any rom development experience? where would you rate your skill level at?

ive been programming in C/java for about 4 years now, (2nd year programming student currently) and ive been building my personal roms from source for about 6 months, and in the past few months ive started actively changing source code, integrating parts from some kernels and ROMs, and adding things to system apps (like voltage control and frequency mod in the settings.apk)
however, on the other hand, i do have fairly large gaps in my knowledge. i only barely know how to use github, and i haven't really dealt with the Linux/android kernel much before this.
honestly, on a scale from 1-10 (1=android user, 10= developer like Whitehawkx/Morfic) id say about 7.

i feel im a very competent programmer, but there are thing i am pretty much oblivious too. outside of android I've got a good portfolio of programs and source, but when it comes to android, I'm still learning. (and i definitely feel your more knowledgeable than me)
Do it one more person helping the community isn't a bad thing. You're obviously knowledgeable enough. Once you start playing with it and have a base crowd that likes what you do you'll get further involved and make a great rom in my eyes. You're willing to help everyone and give a very insightful solution to most and all types of questions.

I agree with the above, but be weary of the people who destroy devs by all the nagging and begging.

I would do it. If you can base it off of stock with some cm7 improvements that would be cool, like with weapon g2x. I was using weapon till I switched to HFP.

ROM battle: AOKP vs BEAM ROM

Which is best and why? Enter your experience and reviews please.

We cannot justify that the Rom x is better than the Rom y, it depends on our own taste and way of using it.. sense our ICS base ROM's are under development as of this time,
and most of all we just need to provide them some log's in every issue we encounter so that they can work on it, in that way we can have a better ICS as ROM builds progress.. what we can do is to give thanks to our great dev's who work hard to give us the ICS,
but base on my experience i never encounter any issue in AOKP, specially on the latest build
Beam hands down. Smoother faster and better battery life. I think so anyways . But both are awesome!

It's all a matter of opinion, and my opinion is the only one that matters... to me...
Everyone has a favorite, for whatever reason, but their reasons may not be the next persons. Personally, haven't tried Beam, and no offense to whoever the dev is for it, but I don't plan to. I'm happy with AOKP, and I'll keep updating it (in fact I need to download the latest) but other than that, i'm done messing with this phone...

I was going to do something like this thread but for MIUI vs cMIUI. Then I thought that people would come telling that it's a personal thing, every ROM is great, they are all smooth and fast... and stuff like that. I think that the OP was asking for more than the general description. What really is it that made you choose that ROM over the other?
My choice here would be AOKP. I have used Team Acid's ROMs since forever, back in the Froyo days when ICBINB and Audiophiles were all over the place. I trust their work and it fits my personality. Constant support and never had an unsolved issue. My dad has been using Valhalla Black since it came out, I don't remember when. He thinks that it's the ultimate thing, still. So, that's enough proof that their work is awesome. Doesn't mean I don't like other development. I have used every ROM, mod and kernel here. Just my preference. Of course, AOKP is smooth, fast, stable, simple, no confusing apps (normal launcher), doesn't take much time to set up to my preferences and it has constant support and updates. But then again, every other ROM has it too. It's very hard to describe the choice, but I can't find other way to explain it.
No disrespect to other devs here. I know Erik, Thomas, Dao, Solrac, Anton and the others do an excellent job. In fact, I'm currently on cMIUI, not AOKP. But I have tried all other's and it's very hard to decided with which one to stay with.
Beam if you want speed and smoothness
aokp if you want customization

Getting a One X (ROM suggestions)

I'm getting a One X for my girlfriend either tonight or tomorrow. She's very technically incapable, she just wanted something better than that Lumia 900 she's had for a while and I found this One X on the cheap lol. Basically I'm gonna root, unlock, and flash a ROM on day 1 cause I've had HTC devices before and the battery and stock performance is usually....meh, to put it nicely. So I'd rather avoid that headache and just cut the problem straight at the beginning.
I'm looking through the development section and I've narrowed it down to 3. Maximus, Android Revolution, and ORDroid. Now the key things I'm looking for here are:
1) Ease of use
2) Stability
3) Battery life
4) Preferably OTA updates cause it's so easy even a girlfriend can do it.
5) Preferably no compromises on camera, wifi, bt, or anything.
I know it seems like I'm asking a lot, but really I just want to know what's my best option here and since I don't have a One X myself to test these ROMs out there's nobody better to ask than you guys. Thanks a lot for the feedback!

Stick to ROMs in the AT&T One X specific section of the forum, and you'll be safe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1538
Don't flash any ROMs from the forum that is labelled simply "HTC One X" as that versions has completely different hardware internally, and any ROMs from their will either not work, and/or will brick your phone.
There is no best ROM. Everyone has different preferences and expectations. To recommend one over another is an insult to our devs that work so hard to give us free software, as saying one is not 'the best' is implying it somehow inferior, when it is not.
I know about the International One X, like I said earlier that was my fault for looking through the wrong forum. As far as asking for the best ROM I was asking what's the best one for my needs that I listed. I'm not trying to make somebody's work seem like it's "less" than someone else's but obviously one ROM is gonna fit me better than another. And if I tell everybody what I'm looking for and ask for help on which would suit my needs then that shouldn't be misconstrued as insulting other developers.

All due respect, those are the same rationalizations that are often given when someone starts a "best ROM" thread.
You're parameters aren't anything special. Its not like people are walking around requesting ROMs that get bad battery, or are hard to use.
Its not that hard to look through the features of the ROMs, see which ones fit your need, and try out a couple.
"Best ROM" threads are simply not allowed here (whatever you think your rationale may be), and mods will close this thread soon.
You'd be surprised how impossible it is to actually try out a ROM before you get the phone. And I wasn't trying to flame a best ROM thread, if you just read through the posts you'd realize I was looking for a stock ROM that wouldn't be overwhelming for someone completely unfamiliar with this sort of stuff. I said options and tweaks weren't important and stability definitely was. Sounds a little less generic than you're making it out to be.
Could I have looked through the development section myself? Absolutely. Was it lazy and more convenient for me to do this? Of course it was. Is it undermining the entire concept of a Q&A section when you say which questions can and can't be asked? A little. Especially when the whole point of this was that I don't have the phone myself so I HAVE to ask people what their opinions are.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Obviously, regardless of whether you start a thread asking about ROMs, or research them yourself, its all purely academic until you actually get the device and start flashing ROMs. If you want to do some preparation before you receive your phone, your time is probably better spent reading about how to unlock the bootloader and root the phone, as the steps are not completely obvious or straightforward.
I'm not trying to beat on you, seriously. But if every person new to this phone made a thread asking what ROM is best "for him" arguing that their needs were somehow unique and special (and therefore deserved their own thread), the Q&A forum would quickly be rendered useless by a flood of hundreds of such threads.

These are the same kind of questions as the "Whats your favorite case?" or... "Whos your favorite carrier?"... those don't get closed so I don't see why these have to be closed? Some people don't have time to flash multiple ROM's, and to be honest you can't really decide if it's right for you in one day... These kind of threads help narrow down the right ROM for you, chances are if other people like it, you will too.... just look at how many people use CyanogenMod.
But anyways back on topic, I would suggest using Cyanogenmod. Overall it is the fastest ROM I have found. Most people like fast, so if that's your thing go with Cyanogenmod. They are currently working on 4.3 Android, they have a version out already but SMS/MSM isn't working so I suggest to wait it out until they fix the bugs.
Viper ROM is great for customizations, however it won't be as fast as Cyanogenmod, at least in my experience it won't..
That's all I've got, I've narrowed it down to 2 ROM's for you. However if you feel daring and want to try out some more ROM's I suggest you look at the post counts of the ROM's thread and usually if they have more people posting in it it usually means it's a better ROM and has an active developer fixing all the bugs and what not.
Thanks and enjoy!
Okay, let's do some thinking here.
Hypothetically, if ALMOST everyone were to suggest the same ROM, what benefit would that bring for the other devs working on the ROM they're providing? What would happen if we all said leave your phone stock? Would you? It works, it's reliable, there are no bugs, and no problems for you to complain about.
So let's all try to play along with that idea for just a bit.
Leave your phone stock. Unrooted. Why? No problems or bugs for anyone because it's stable. :good:

It means their likings aren't the same as the majority of other people, or they need to work harder to make their ROM better.

It's considered to be very disrespectful to devs to say one ROM is better than another. And really, no ROM is better than another ROM. ROMs suit different people for different reasons, therefore nobody can definitively say ROM a is better than ROM b. Just flash a few and find out for yourself, it's REALLY simple.

Those don't get closed because its completely different. Products like cases/phones and carrier services are paid for. So I can easily see why these are allowed. Voice your opinion on what you paid for, and furthermore, att doesn't care what we say here. They get their money, they aren't discouraged if I say I hate their service.
Roms are different. A developer doesn't sit down and say "let me earn a pay check by building a new ROM". In fact, they do it in spare time, after their real job/friends and family. To say someone's volunteer work is bad and that you don't like it, and that a certain ROM is better is preposterous. Saying things like "well A is good for X, but I like to do Y, so I chose B" is a perfectly logical statement. Everything regarding a ROM is opinion based. They are all rock solid and do different things. What you choose depends on what you need the ROM to do for you.
To say a ROM is the best (is what these threads turn into) is plain stupid. Everyone has their own opinion, and should share it within reason.
So these Devs that do this in their free time certainly don't want to hear why a ROM is better than theirs, especially since nobody has an obligation to do this for us.
That's why these threads get closed.

To be fair it's in the rules which I'm sure you read before posting right? And since your question doesn't take the dev's feelings into account when they do all this work for free, it could be said that your question makes you a ****ing ****
I have a personal preference for AOSP myself.

Actually.. I asked what wad your favorite Rom. I didn't ask what's your least favorite Rom. Therefore if a dev sees that his Rom is listed as somones favorite he would be happy not sad.
