Hey guys so I just got an HTC HD7, I'm new to window phones this is my first one and I was looking for advice as far as customizing and getting the best experience out of my phone possible. Thanks in advance.
Well, if you want full control and don't mind getting your hands just a little dirty, you can install a custom ROM that will give you access to pretty much everything. The first step is to downgrade the bootloader using GoldCard; there are instructions on the Dev&Hacking sub-forum. The next step is ton install HSPL (probably you want the v3 for gen1 HTC phones version), which is the unlocked bootloader. Same forum. After that, you can install a custom ROM, which will generally all be posted under the HD7-specific forums.
If you want lots of control but want to stick with a stock ROM, things get a little trickier. You'll need two things: a firmware version of *.*.4XXXX.* or below, and a developer unlock. The first will probably require flashing a stock ROM, and then not immediately letting the phone update again. The second can be done a few either by buying an AppHub account from Microsoft, or by using DreamSpark to get a free one if you're a student. There is a third way, the original ChevronWP7 Unlocker, but it's a real pain in the ass to make it work now (it only worked on very old versions of the OS). Once you've got the compatible firmware version and your dev-unlock, install HTC Interop Unlock from Heathcliff74 and follow its instructions. Once interop-unlocked, install WP7 Root Tools (also by Heathcliff74) and follow its instructions. Both are on the dev&hacking subforum here. You now have "rooted" your phone and may mark apps as able to run with full permissions, plus you have full access to your phone's filesystem and registry.
As for apps, poke around the Dev&hacking, General, and Software Development subforums here. One good place to start is Bazaar, an alternate Marketplace app for WP7 that supports discovering, installing, and updating homebrew apps.

Ok, so I have a copy of unrevoked 3, and the custom rom to install. how big an ordeal is it to root this phone. I have used blackberry for the last 4 years, and just got this Aria. Running unapproved software on the blackberries was not a problem for me, but I am a little concerned about rooting this phone to try to run 2.2, and get rid of all the restrictions that AT&T have put on it (like no apps except from the market, or deleting crap AT&T put on it that I don't want or need).
Do I need to run the unrevoked on a linux based system, or have there been success running on Windows 7? Do I need to use a blank microSD card when doing this?
Just new to the whole Android thing, and don't really want to brick my new phone.
Thanks in advance.
Anybody? Please help....
See the aria forum. There are several posts on rooting the aria, and you'll also find a link to an irc chanel where you can get help if you're having trouble (sorry, too lazy to find a link).
Hi, I am waiting for my HTC Sensation to arrive from eBay. New to android and have been reading about rooting. Just want to make sure I am getting this clear:
So, to root, I'll need to to the S-off thing with revolution, then clockwork recovery, then SU to actually root it right?
I am not sure whether I need to root it, but I am interested in unlocking it for SIM and I read there's a way to do it if the phone is rooted. Also, I probably don't need some of the T-mobile apps and want to delete it. However, do I have necessarily have to flash a custom ROM after I rooted it? Can I just use what came with the HTC?
However, if I do this, I guess I can't update through HTC/T-mobile anymore right? So I'll have to flash some ROM, but does it have some modify ROM, or can I use the ROM that's official from HTC?
Can someone please correct me if I misunderstood the process? And also, can I reverse all this if I decide I just want to use it the way it was shipped except simunlocked, and be able to update newer version of the OS from HTC.
Thanks
Sensation rooting
I was just like you about a month and half ago. im new to android aslo but i'll help you. first- your right about using the revolutionary method and installing clockwork and super user. as for unlocking it for a SIM you might need super cid check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
to remove some tmobile apps use titanium backup (it's in the market)
As for roms im using stock but it's rooted. but before you root please update to 2.3.4 because it really improve your phone but yes you would have to flash update roms after you root. but you can find the official one's here if you look for them as soon as they come out.
pretty much yes to your questions...even if you root you can stay with your stock rom and just use titanium backup to delete all the junk u dont want. Also, even if you cant get updates officially, devs here are nice enuf to post the newest stock roms for you to flash so dont worry. so i suggest you read these three threads to start off and have fun (just read directions very carefully)

Thanks for the quick reply. So I can only remove some t-mobile apps if it's rooted right? I was thinking of updating to the newest version before considering rooting. I think I will be kinda in the same situation as you....so when you say stock rooted rom...it's basically the same ROM as what t-mobile has with SENSE etc...but can be apply to a rooted phone without losing root right?
Finally, since you're not using any custom ROM and stuff... do u find it worthwhile rooting? what other advantage have you notice if you're using the stock ROM?
Thanks again!

My rom is the same one that comes when you first get the phone. the only expectation is that it's updated to 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.3 and that it's rooted. When you root imagine like it's a window's pc and instead of using the guest account where stuff is limited, your now able to use the administrator account which lets you do anything.
As for advantages, i wanted to improve it's speed and battery life. the update helps but you'll find out that tmobile has alot of apps running in the background which slows it down and uses more battery and they also included useless app or two of the same kind of app. Right now im looking at other roms because im kinda tired of sense but i wish i could keep it's widgets.

Great. I think I'll just stick with the 2.3.4 firmware for now before considering flashing any custom ROMs etc.
So just so I am clear, I should update the unrooted phone to 2.3.4 when I get it. then I can perform the S-off, clockwork, superuser to get it rooted and just leave it as it is and use the existing ROM as it came with the phone. Until I need to update to a higher version, I will then flash a rooted version of whatever t-mobile came out with from here. Is that the deal?
Finally, what's superCID? Do I need that?
Thanks again.. you guys been a great help! I can't wait to play around with this when I get the phone this weekend
Rooting
Yep your correct....
As for super CID is something like a carrier unlock. This has something to do with updates i think. but by adding this you can flash any carrier's rom onto your phone. for example vodafone and orange are both 2 different europe phone companies and they both include different apps on their roms just like tmobile give there special apps. With super-CID you can put anyone of those carries rom on you phone regardless if it's a europe, usa, or asia sensation. but you don't need- i haven't put it on either.
I was looking at getting the galaxy 3 but since it looks like another week I think I'm going to get the x one but my question is how hard is it to root and be able to install custom roms as I remember old htc phones being a lot of trouble?thanks
We have one click root and recovery installs for either shipping firmware version. After rooting we also have one click bootloader unlock.

The devs have dealt with nearly all of our troubles already. As gunnyman said, we pretty much have one-clicks for everything then it's just normal flashing from there.
Everything you need is compiled here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
In particular, the guides at the bottom of Post 1 of the Index thread will run you step by step through the process.
But to answer your question, I wouldn't consider it "hard", but that's completely subjective. But there are several steps you will need to go through. Namely:
1) Obtain root (as mentioned above, this is one-click and easy)
2) Change to SuperCID (again, one-click)
3) Register at HTCDev.com, and obtain an unlock token
4) Unlock the bootloader using the token (not hard, just follow instructions on given by the HTCDev.com website, and the XDA tutorials mentioned above).
5) Install recovery. CWM can be installed one-click. But TWRP recovery is good, too, and easy to install.
Then you are ready to install custom ROMs.
thanks alot looks easier than it used to be with htc phones so im going to get my htc one x tonight and see what happens.
Suppose it depends on what HTC device you are coming from. Every generation of HTC device is a bit different (since HTC keeps changing up its security). Revolutionary S-Off and root was real easy for user to implement (not one-click, but pretty damn close). Gfree was pretty complicated (at least a lot of ADB commands to type). But overall, I'd say the One X is not hard. Just multiple steps to go through, most of which are easy. And if you've used ADB and fastboot in the past, its a breeze.
Also, be sure to hit the "thanks" button if my post helped you.
Hi,
So I think this thread is pretty common to most other phones, but I couldn't really find a stickied one or anything of the sorts? After using the search function to the best of my ability, I would like to begin a thread on what's most important after rooting.
From what I understand, Supersu and BusyBox are a must (taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296&highlight=no+such+file+or+directory)
Then, I went to remove the animation and music from startup (taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645818&highlight=
remove+startup&page=2)
Last, I attempted this but I don't know if it actually works. This one-click tether tool has me guessing at its methodologies, but it seems to be working at the moment so I am happy? Haven't actually tested it, but here is link I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677261
Debranding seems like a great idea! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634171 (edit1)
Unlocking bootloader, taken from the huge index of guides, but specifically this one. (edit2)
Getting TWRP, from their website: I used the automated one because I tried downloading and launching with no luck. Backing up currently, very easy through Goo Manager; all I did was click "boot to recovery" or whatever from the main page of the app. (edit3)
Here is how to disable software update/upgrade and generally protect yourself from AT&T updating your phone (don't know how to describe it) (edit4)
I humbly submit all the knowledge I have of my phone to the rest of the users. My technical experience is limited, am scared of recommended bootloader unlocks, but am willing to help bundle for newbies like me.
And thank you devs and mods for making this all come together!
(edit1) Because I was looking in the wrong section, I found this thread about the post I made later. Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake? For mod, should this be placed into Q&A at this point? Thanks!
(edit2) Having lots of fun just exploring what other people have recommended me do. So far, got root access and unlocked bootloader, am in the process of getting the "flash recovery" or something to that extent? Unsure of how much more research I should do before continuing to dive in! Thanks for all the input, will keep updating if only to provide log for myself, hoping that some users will find this helpful still
(edit3) Found time to play with TWRP! Really want to get the Sense 4.1 stuff, but scared!
(edit4) Forgot to update with the old post I found to work around the system update thing.
(edit5) useful thread I'm reading through for more information on odex/deodex, am about to update again soon so that I can explore roms and the such!

I'm in a little bit of a pickle because I left my phone alone and luckily when I came back, I stopped the system update download at about 50%. So I'm paranoid to turn on any radio function. Would you happen to know if the methods you used above will disable the system update (permanently)?
As soon as I can get off this dilemma, I do want to try to unlock the bootloader, though it is a bit intimidating to realize that I could break my warranty if I fail...
Thanks in advance! Learning lots from this grand adventure with my AT&T HOX
Do a factory reset for now then run setup, after that go to system updates and uncheck, auto update or what ever it says. That will hold you off for now

If your rooted, use a file manager, go to the /cache folder and delete the chunk of the ota that downloaded, then untick sys. Updates in settings. Just a 2nd method.
if your rooted iI would do a factory reset and then use the one click unlock bootloader method to unlock the bootloader. then from the play store download Goo manager and from there flash the twrp recovery and finally flash a custom roms i recommend the nocturnal rom

Can either of you point me to where to figure out all these rom things? To be honest, I just want to ask you guys straight out but I feel that's disrespectful to all the knowledge you have. I'm seeking more information about how the flashing thing works, whether it wipes everything outside of my twrp backup and/or whether they're exclusive to anything to that effect. Specifically, I'm debating between "[ROM][8/3] - Stock Rooted AT&T 2.20.502.7 - Android 4.0.4 - Odex or De-Odex", "[ROM][AT&T][08/18/12][2.29.207.1]Sandstorm_v2.1", and "[ROM][8/17] Stock Rooted 2.29.207.1 - Sense 4.1! o2 German Carrier!"
Any place that you can point me in the right direction would help me (and other readers for this post). Thanks again so much!

Hello everyone,
I own an HTC one S and I want to root it.
My main reason to want to root is is to try and run as lightweight Android OS on it as possible, I just want to get rid of the t-mobile and HTC stuff I am unable to uninstall right now etc etc.
I was planning on a factory reset for it to run a little smoother and to clean up all the files but I figured I might as well look into rooting and looking for a different Android version to use.
I understand there is a lot of great tutorials and guides on this subforum, but I'm having real problems with understanding a lot of the terminology or to know where to start. I'm no noob with computers but all the guides seem to be for something different and I'm not sure at which to start and why etc.
I've made a HTC dev account, I think I need to start with a bootloader, even though I'm not sure what that is.
There also seem to be some all-in-one tools, one more complete than the other so that also makes me unsure of which to use and if they'll even do what I want to achieve.
(One of the guides has a link to a download for fastboot files, but Firefox has the website marked as a phising website so that's a little shady as well)
Is it best to run a certain stock android version on an HTC one S? Or is this ROM a better idea? Maybe neither?
So, a couple of questions I hope somebody can answer. Thanks in advance.

You need:
ADB/fastboot
latest HTC drivers + (If running win 8.1 the fastboot FIX )
Then just follow the step @ HTC dev (HTC One S is not listed, choose "All other supported devices"
This will unlock your bootloader. Post here or PM me when you're done with it
Hey! I'm gonna look into this right now, after backupping all my stuff. Thanks!
Yes, there's all-in-one software like Windroid Universal Android Toolkit available here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=1314#downloads
Make sure to have all drivers installed correctly first, then plug your phone and run the Windroid software.
You can choose you phone from the list to have the right recoveries.
After this, click GET TOKEN ID button, it will restart your phone in fastboot, get the token in a text file then open the HTC dev website.
You can follow the instruction on site to get the unlock_code.bin, save it on your pc.
On Windroid, click the UNLOCK BOOTLOADER and choose your unlock_code.bin on your computer.
Follow the instruction then, voilĂ , your bootloader is now unlocked !
If you don't know which custom rom to choose, Lungo is a modified Cyanogenmod that only contain the essential things to work, so very lightweight.
I don't recommend lollipop roms at the moment, they are still slow and buggy.

I'm pretty happy with my lollipop too, but camuu said that he wanted a lightweight rom.
btw, I see in your signature that you're using Frosted Bricked kernel 02/25, is it good ?
I ask, because I have tried Frosted Bricked 03/01 on CM12 03/05 hboot 2.15 and my phone became terribly slow, it was unusable. I flashed the CM12 03/10 over it and now it's back to normal.

02/25 Frosted and 02/25 IceCode are running good for me I prefer 03/05 CM because i really hate the FCs at startup. A lightweight and totally stable rom is Candy5 v 1.0.0 02/07.
Just to clarify, LS.xD helped me out with the entire process, very thankful for that.
Working great so far!
