Is it possible to make a regular verizon phone available for prepaid? - General Topics

So I was told that the Verizon Wireless Casio G'z One Phone would work. I paid 70 bucks for it on Amazon and when I went to activate it, Verizon said it was not compatible. I just want to know if I can get around this anyway because one I was told it would work and two I am super rough on phones and need a strong durable one and prepaid doesnt offer any.
Thanks!

I'm assuming you bought the phone non subsidized, probably used at that price? Not sure how Verizon's prepaid plans work but you could look into Page Plus. They are a prepaid service that uses Verizon towers and they allow Verizon Android phones on their prepaid plans as long as the ESN is good.

AT&T doesn't sell prepaid data plans for non-contract phones?

I am a USA visitor, am in Washington now. I was in the AT&T store today, was going to buy Captivate off contract and buy AT&T sim with data plan only and use until the end of this summer and then waiting for unlock to use in Russia, but AT&T guys said that they don't sell prepaid sim card with data plans for non-contract PDA phones which is Captivate for $500. I find it absolutely crazy, why then they sell smartphones off contract in this way? For whom? If this phone is full prices when buying it without contract, it is locked with AT&T and it's not even possible to use the internet with an AT&T sim. Well, does T-mobile provide data plans when buying prepaid sim card? Should I wait for unlock and then buy this phone and then connect to T-mobile until this summer? And, well, it's possible for unlock not to arrive so soon
And I heard that there is a Captivate coming to Rogers in the 20th of August, is there any info if it'll come off contract and unlocked(able)? And in this case it is possible for Rogers to send this phone to the New York's hotel, for example?
for data plan only say you have a ipad they will give you a prepaid data plan and you can use it by adjusting some settings
i just got the $20 100MB data plan to use in my captivate. the gophone sim and data work fine.
Don't get the captivate. ATT won't have unlock codes available for a long time.

Yep that's what I was going to suggest. That's your best option. Buy a go phone sim card. Tell them you want the 100mb worth of data and that's it. Pop it into the phone and you will be good to go.
100 mb is probably not enough for me, is it possible to get more with this go plan?
and about captivate, if Rogers starts selling it soon, this phone won't be exclusive and I think there is a great chance to get an unlock code in september for example
If a buy a data plan for iPad, will they give me a micro sim or normal sim? Will it work with captivate for sure?

yes... spend $20 more and get 200MB Also, you can get a sim adaptor if you recieve a micro sim. If you go the ore-paid route, make sure you get the sim from a retail store and not from a gophone kit. I did this and had to get them to swap the sim (for free) to one that works in my new phone. Hope this helps!

You could get the T-Mobile Vibrant at full price (supports Euro 3G on the 2100mhz band for when you go back to Europe, needs unlocking though) and sign up for the Even More Plus Smartphone Unlimited Web & E-mail, no contract, $39.99. Should work.

I hate the look of Samsung Vibrant...
Captivate is far better
Is it possible for Rogers to send phone outside Canada? In USA or Russia?
From everything I've seen, they won't ship outside of Canada. Though if you or a friend can go yo Canada, they will sell you one.
Another option is to find someone in Canada willing to buy and ship the phone.
Sent from my Samsung Captivate.
ok, I'll wait 2 weeks in this case and then decide what and when to buy
100 mb data plan suks
hope rogers' captivate will be easy unlockable

[Q] GSIII Sprint to ATT?

So xmas coming around I'm getting asked what I want. I have been wanting a new phone as I've had my OG Evo for over 2 years and my contract is up in March. I was thinking of getting the GSIII but my question is, I've also been thinking of going over to ATT once my contract is up... can I swap the phone over to ATT or do I have to get another again?

Yes you can but then it will be like taking another data plan so you might have to pay extra
I'd really look into this before doing this because everything I see after doing a quick Google search says that no, you can't - the Sprint GS3 has an embedded SIM for LTE that's soldered into the phone. So you can't just pop an ATT or T-Mobile SIM in there.
There might be a way to hack it to work, but, really, I wouldn't waste my time with it outside of "let's do this for a fun hobby" - not "let's do this to use as our daily use phone". For all the work you'd have to do completely taking the phone apart and replacing parts and doing who knows what to get it to work - you'd be better off selling the Sprint phone and buying an ATT one especially if you're not good with that sort of hardware and hacking thing.
I'm going to cut to the chase, and tell you as someone who used to be a Sprint and a Verizon technician, and also someone with common sense (no offense to anyone) that, no you can't make a CDMA phone with no accessible SIM card slot work on a GSM network. The Verizon works with some hacking around, but that's because the SIM card slot is accessible and the phone has the necessary internal hardware. You'd need either the T-Mobile version (it gets AT&T HSPA+, but not LTE), the International i9300, which I use (It gets AT&T HSPA+ but not LTE), or the AT&T version (it does LTE).
Thank you for the quick replies.... So it's safe to assume that any phone I would get on sprint would follow the same course of actions as they're all CDMA. Any advice on whether I could sell my sprint one for the same price or would ATT do an in store trade in for their GSM version????

I'd guess so.
You could try to sell the Sprint one used and buy a comparable used one and maybe break even or only lose a bit to the tune of eBay fees - if you're lucky and patient. And are aware of the risks of buying used and make sure eBay has you covered.
I don't know about in-store trade-ins. Do that do that with phones from other networks ? If they're going to recover costs, I'd think they're probably not going to give you the best deal. I mean, Sprint told me my old phone had a $5 trade-in value, but it's going for $40-50 on eBay (it was an old dumb-phone, so I wasn't expecting much - but $40 is still a lot more than $5).
Personally, I would check out the ETF you have left at this point and probably just pay it if you're sure you want out instead of waiting until March and having a phone that will deprecate in value that you were never intending to keep.

New S4 for $330...Seems A Bargain

Just read on Androidpolice Cricket are offering a $200 rebate on the s4. So similar price to the Nexus 4
www.androidpolice.com/2013/06/08/de...laxy-s-iii-and-htc-one-sv-via-mail-in-rebate/
And there are great deals on other phones too. www.mycricket.com/cell-phones?cm_sp=hero-_-423-_-OOF_1
Sorry if this has already been posted
Almost jumped at the offer...but then I remembered Cricket wireless is a CDMA carrier and I want to use T-Mobile, so unless they're selling a factory unlocked phone it would be pointless for me to buy it.

CDMA is typically for US LTE vands. It's what Verizon/Sprint use, and basically it means the phone won't work on GSM netowrks (T-Mobile/AT&T). It's far more restrictive, and you can't just pop in a SIM card and use the phone as you wish.

There seems to be a couple of catches.
-The fine print says that you need to make two auto-bill payments to Cricket wireless, which depending on the plan you pick, is $70-100. It also means you must be on Cricket wireless service for 45 days before you can cancel and use the phone on another carrier, which if it's a CDMA phone, means no T-Mobile/AT&T.
-The rebate offer could be several months before you get it in the mail.

[Q] Which MVNO is the least expensive

I'm a verizon user, but my father wants to replace his old Nokia feature phone with something newer. He's a tracfone user, and as I understand it their BYOD plans are CDMA only. You can get a VZW Moto G today, but I believe they won't unlock the device for use on other networks for 6 months.
So, I can get a GSM version, but am unfamiliar with GSM MVNO's. Which MVNO using AT&T has the least expensive (potential) plan. I don't think he's ever sent a text, and I don't see him using data on the device much, but I think he would appreciate the camera and google maps. An unlimited plan is pure overkill for him. He's the definition of the minimal user.
Probably Straight Talk Sims.

Actually I've been looking into this recently myself. I'm currently with Tracfone but I'm thinking about upgrading my phone (Moto G is one strong consideration).
Straight Talk is one option but it really depends on needs. If he's a light user, PayAsYouGo may be the best. If he's consumes quite a bit of minutes, prepaid may be the path. I would look at H2o or Airvoice also. With either you could possibly get a light user down around what TF cost (depending on the plan used there). They both also offer monthly prepaids less expensive than ST. However, I think ST is 4G and the two I mentioned may be only 3G if that matters. Both H2o and AV use AT&T GSM so that would be a consideration. Of course, Verizon and AT&T are very large providers but you would have to see what works in his area.
And yes, you are correct. The new CDMA Moto G will not work on TF. And I seen some stated that will be that way for at least one year.

Why won't it work on Tracfone's BYOP plan? All you should have to do is call them and let them transfer everything. Jus t because it's locked to Verizon doesn't mean you can't flash it to someone else I think... TF operates on Verizon as well.

Verizon controls what phones are allowed on their network; not TF. Page Plus wireless (which is also a Verizon MVNO provider) customers have the same issue. They want the Moto G but it's the network owner who sets the rules.
You'll find it easier to use higher end phones on MVNOs who employee T-Mobile or AT&T (GSM). That's why I suggested the ones I did. And by no means is the list limited to Airvoice, H2o, Straight Talk. There are more choices. Just not Verizon.

Can I get a Moto G that will work with Ting? I know the Boost mobile version is on the Sprint bands, but it isn't listed on Ting's whitelist.
AFAIK Straight Talk has pretty much stopped selling AT&T sims (only T-Mo ones now) from what I've read recently, the same with Net10 and other AT&T-based MVNOs because it seems like AT&T is really pushing for its Gophone pre-paid as an MVNO competitor (and withdrawing its support for MVNOs it was selling access to gradually). They've revamped their prices recently to be more competitive, and that's the reason I've switched from my old provider (Virgin) --- I'm currently on the $60 unlim txt/voice/2GB data plan (cheaper when buying refills through resellers).
The cheapest Gophone plan for smartphones is $25 / mo for 250 mins unlim domestic text & MMS (and a set of countries), no data included.
If you're not averse to T-Mobile, they have a fantastic low-minutes high data plan ($30 a month for 100 mins, unlimited text & data (throttled at 5GB) but I'm unsure if you can use a Moto G you've not purchased from them with the plan.

is it true that all s7 variants will be the same?

hey id be interested to know if this is true or not and is verizon not doing contracts anymore? so well have to buy the phone at the say 6 or 700 dollar price tag?

I can't imagine Verizon will ever stop using contracts. That's how they make all of their money, by locking in two-year contracts, and locking in contract extensions. What did change is the subsidizing model for the phones themselves. I didn't think it was possible, but they figured out a way to **** people over a little more. I'm pretty sure the new system is a straight monthly payment plan for the now-unsubsidized phones, in addition to your monthly service charges. You were always paying a lot for the phone over the course of your two-year contract, but now I think you'll end up paying more for it over the longterm.
I'm not very familiar anymore, as I jumped ship to PagePlus. I still use Verizon's network and get their coverage, but I have no contract and don't pay anything to Verizon (directly, anyway), which is how I prefer it.

PagePlus is a mobile carrier that, in contract, has use to part of their network tower. Which i believe it's a tier portion and you're able to (since late 2014) get 4G network coverage. Before then you were able to get 3G coverage on 4G devices by flashing your device. Look for the thread by Viper32 on flashing devices to work with PagePlus and other carriers. He's well known in the XDA community for his accomplishments.

Not all of the advantages as you get with Verizon with their incentives. Such as HD calling and their other perks. Other than that it's pretty much worth it being that you can pay monthly without a contract. As far as bootloader goes, if it's a Verizon or AT&T device, the bootloader is still locked no matter who you have for a carrier if it's one of their devices. Google PagePlus and read up on them. Last I knew they had unlimited 7GB of data a month for 69.99. After 7GB you're throttled to 2-3G...
al50 pretty much laid it out.
To break up monopolies, the major carriers were required to open up their networks for use by their competitors. PagePlus is one that uses Verizon's network. The advantage is you get Verizon's 4g coverage, with no contract, for less money each month (it cut my bill in half), and you don't have to pay Verizon. Downsides are less tech support (but we have the xda forum!), it's prepaid (but you can set it up to auto-pay monthly), and you need to bring or buy your own Verizon-compatible phone. I think they offer leasing and possibly payment plans to buy a phone from them, but I'm not certain about the latter.
You just walk in with your phone, buy a SIM card for about $5, pick your plan, and pay up front for the month. Mine is set up for autopay, so I don't have to do anything else.
