Skyrocket on Straight Talk unlimited BYOD sim program discussion thread... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

I just switched from at&t to Straight Talk $45 per month unlimited plan on the sim card BYOP program.
Liking it so far and no complaints as of yet... also I can report speeds of about 7Mbps downloads and almost 2Mbps.
I will be reporting back soon with my experiences. If you are on straight talk let me know how you like it.
Thanks!!

I have the same set up as you. I'm planning on testing the skyrocket on the ST T mobile sim soon and flash radios.

Mind posting apn settings?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app

I'm testing Straight Talk TMO SIM and just a TMO SIM in a Skyrocket. I get similar results with both. I'm running CM9 nightlies for the Skyrocket with the T989 LE1 radio. It's so much less money than my old Verizon service.

I will post the apn settings... The trick is to leave proxy blank in case they want to throttle you. So far it works!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

How much data you guys use per month??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

If I input all the apn settings according to the st website but leave proxy blank I won't get throttled?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app

You can try doing that... im doing the same thing, ST is not throttling at the moment if you do is by att it T-Mobile... once those big two inform ST of your excessive data usage during a 30 day cycle you will get a warning either by phone or text on the second time your account will be permanently suspended... and you will lose your number and will have to buy a new sum with different number...

Finally got my ST sim card installed and activated, did a few speed tests and the fastest I've gotten is 3.3 down and just under 1 up, slow. It could be my area though. In the upper left hand corner of the screen it says "Home".

HOME is like "at&t powered network" or " ST SIM working on at&t towers" ...
I am geting anything between 1-7 mbps DL and .5-2.5 UL

I have been on ST for AT&T for 25 days now. I know exactly how many because I've already used 2.49 GB this month and I'm worried I'll get kicked. I can say that the service is good, and I love the freedom of not being tied to a contract (and I'm paying less than a lot of postpaid wireless subscribers to boot).
I was on Tmobile's $30 5 gig walmart plan but I was not able to get the Tmobile radios working on the i727 properly. I'm using the UCLF5 radio now for AT&T and I generally get between 2 and 4 mbit down.

been on straight talk for about a year now, before they offered BYOD, had to buy a phone and pull the sim out. i regularly do about 1.5-3.0 gig a month and have never received any type of notification or ever been throttled.
Never put in the proxy, no need to.
Here was a post i did with my current settings on sky ice 4.2f3

Google voice & straight talk & att mvno
I recently been trying out different att MVNO's. I tried used H20 Wireless and un-successfully never got conditional call forwarding to work. I read different articles and came to the conclusion that I would never get conditional call forwarding to work on any prepaid. However I wanted to try a different one and see. I said Straight Talk is cheaper so what the hell. I tried and it works perfectly. I just thought I would pass that along. Also running stock and latest build UCLF6.

Anyone on Straight Talk having issues with "Speed Test" and just that Apk download? I get between .5 - 2 m upload. Download will either say network issues or get 9 k.
Fix: I got everything to work by removing the proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

My att bill is due tomorrow and its like 500. Its in my wife's name and we just seperated. I got my SR out right off contract so I think I'm going to get byop straightalk.
I just go to Walmart and buy the sim? 45 a month sounds like a winner to me.
Didn't know what I was going to do until I seen this thread. Now I have an option. Thanks.

You have to order the sim from straight talk website....once u do that u can buy the refill cards from wal mart...

Battery life on edge - outstanding

I am in roaming n didn't opt for the 3g plan, technically leaving me on edge all through.
Attaching below, I want to show how awesome the battery life is on edge. Hopefully this will give more reasons for our devs to work on enabling 2g/3g toggle in roms.
2.5 days standby with ~1 hour display n ~40 mins calls, battery is at 51%.
Standby drain is at 1% per ~3 hours. Compare this to 1% per hour when on 3g/h in US.

definitely impressive - i can't say it's surprising... you never use the thing! 1 hour of display time and less than 1 hour of call time in ~2.5 days - it probably feels neglected. i would keep a leash on it so it doesn't try to run away.

The point here was abt the standby drain in edge, esp for users in travel like me who don't use data 24/7 n use only in intervals. Plus this is with frequent times in areas with low signal.
More importantly, an hour of calls now takes abt 6-7% battery, compared to 10-12% when on H.

Just curious, what do you mean you didn't get the '3G' plan? I wasn't aware there was such a plan and either way, AT&T doesn't allow the toggling of WCDMA/Edge manually, even with root access on current US based builds or with the star codes
Even though you're in a roaming zone, it's still scanning WCDMA bands unless you did something

Nice one U see, I am in India now on vacation. I can opt for 3G at a slightly higher cost, or stick to edge. Since its only mails n xda stuff mainly, I decided not to take the 3g plans.
By the way, I am on prepaid n paying $1 and 20 cents for a 1 GB plan with 15 days validity. 2GB plan with 30 days validity is abt $2 and 20 cents. Saying this just for sake of cost comparision. I think 3g plans for the same are about $1 more than those on edge.

Yeah, but only for LTE because that technology uses gsm. The infuse will not work on verizon no matter how you attempt to unlock it or which SIM you put in it. Walk into your nearest verizon retailer and they will laugh you out the door.
All verizon phones must support cdma, even the LTE phones that have a SIM still have cdma support. The infuse has neither LTE or cdma.

It's not actually unlimited.
I used to be on GG myself and everything was going great. Then I started getting my internet cut off because I was using too much internet. How can one use too much of unlimited? I literally ended up getting cut of twice in one week for using too much and all I was doing was streaming through Netflix.
Here's a screenshot of the message I sent to one of their agents about the situation.

I am currently on 500mb data, having to cut myself short as I'm averaging 3x that in a month. I think the most I'll use is about 3 gig, mainly Rom downloads. Won't be using Netflix or streaming media, but still like access to my files at home whilst I'm out, which is why I was looking at giffgaff.

Look at OP. He just asked about our carrier and hasn't posted since. He never wanted to discuss about our carriers either, he simply wanted to know WHAT carrier we were on. The replies started the conversation on what carriers were good.
Since I posted second, all I knew about this thread was that some weirdo with barely any posts just wanted to know what carrier other people were using. He never posted his carrier either, usually you would at least say "to start, I am on AT&T" or other carrier.

From Straight Talk AT&T to Go Phone LTE.....

If you plan on doing it, DO IT!! In case you don't know, AT&T Go Phone is their prepaid services and they introduced new plans that offer LTE back on June 21. I just did less than an hour ago and boy does it feel great. All of our phones are data driven and it is important to have good data speeds otherwise your experience can be ruined, waiting for stuff to load. Everything is lightning fast, even sending text messages is pretty much instant vs before there was a slight delay. I recommend anyone who has the straight talk AT&T to move on to the Go Phone AT&T LTE. It's only 60$ a month plus tax so let's round it up at 65$. That's less than 20 bucks a month from straight talk but with up to 10 times the speed (and I'm not exaggerating) . Here's a sample:

Unfortunately 60-65 is good in the US. And that's only for 2gb of data @LTE speeds.
I am on Att and between 2 lines with only 4gb of lte unlimited everything else I pay $146.00 that's after a 20% employer discount.

We(I) pay 25 euro's a month for 2GB 14.4mbps 3g, with free LTE when they finish rolling out the network in a month or 4.
SimOmly, though. I would rather use a dumb phone than that branded crap. I'll buy my phone myself, cheers... It saves me 300 euros! (700 @Tmobile, 420 mediamarkt germany...)
With phone is 35 a month. 1 or 2 years makes no difference in price.

Wow this thread is old. I was using Straight talk 45 a month, LTE speeds. 5gb a month unlimited everything else. In the beginning it worked great, however, it turned into a horrible experience. I was with them for almost 4 years without any issue. Here's what happened........I was about half way through my month, When I noticed my data speeds were horribly slow! So bad I couldn't watch a video, and browsing the Web took like 10 minutes to load a website page!
So I called Straight talk 1800 number, which by the way is a whole different discussion. Lol. I was told I went over my data limit. I asked if I bought another 45 card would my data b reinstated, he said yes, so I bought it and added it. I noticed my speeds were still horrid! Well this went on for over a week, I called back and they said everything was fine on their end lol. So I decided to buy another Sim card and another 45 card. The second I switched Sims and added the 45 dollar card with a new phone number, my speeds magicly came back! So what happens is when someone watches a lot of videos, and uses all their data, straight talk sees that and throttles you forever!
I decided to switch to go phone ATT prepaid service. It's 10 bucks more a month, but they don't drop u to 1x speeds when u run out of data, they drop it to 3g. And I now have the option to add as many gigs of LTE I want at 10 bucks a gig. This is the way to go! Screw Straight talk! 4 years I was with them and they acted like I wasn't with them at all! Anyways I hope this post helps other people to leave Straight talk! They are garbage! Never again!

There is no "best" deal, but a popular one I know of and use is with T-Mobile, a non-contract $30 a month plan with unlimited data(first 5gb at 4g speed) unlimited texting and 100 talking minutes. I rooted my phone and can now tether without the fee and I use an app to make free phone calls. 5gb of data is a lot for phone usage, even if you tether it should last you a month. If you're looking for a home internet service though you should still order wifi because 4g speed isn't great on laptops.
i have sprint.. been with them almost 4 years.. i love them.. well service sucked for a while but now i get great 4g lte in my state so im happy.. i get unlimited talk.. text.. data.. and use wifi tether all the time with no issues.. i would hate to have a limit on data..

If you're looking for a home internet service though you should still order wifi because 4g speed isn't great on laptops.

I'm with T-mob and pay much more than you for pretty much the same thing. What apps are you using?
