Got my 2nd g-tab from Woot today. I fired it up and it was 1.1-3389. Did the OTA update that brought it to the recommended 1.1-3588. I fiddled with it a bit to see if maybe the stock rom was ok - it wasn't. Here is what I did. I installed clockworkmod and repartitioned and then did a backup of the installation. Using the USB connection I copied it to my PC. Next, using clockworkmod I wiped the data/factory reset, wiped the cache and wiped the dalvik cache (because I had read about this somewhere in the forum although I'm not sure exactly what each step does). Then I installed G-Adam. I got that up and running and didn't like it. Now it should have been easy to go back but for some reason G-Adam wouldn't enable my usb. Fortunately with a second gtab running vegan, I could swap around the removable sd card and get the original clockworkbackup off my pc and onto the removable sdcard. I swapped that back in and found by trial and error that clockwork only looks in the folder it creates so I had to move it off sdcard2 and onto sdcard into the clockworkmod/ backup folder. Once I did that I did a restore with clockwork and I had my original system back. I went through the same wiping procedure again and then using the usb connection (it works in the original install) I copied the update and recover files to the sdcard, rebooted and installed tnt-lite 4.40 which is presently running. I took another clockworkmod backup of this install and also copied it to my pc for safe keeping. I also discovered that titanium backup on my other g-tab copies zips and copies all the apps into a directory. Again, using the usb connection, I searched for them and dragged them onto the pc. I had to unzip them but the unzipped versions, when copied back to a folder on the new g-tab can be clicked on using a file manager one after the other to get all your apps back pretty quickly.
In conclusion, it would appear that if you take a backup image of a successful installation that you can copy it somewhere for safe keeping and then just restore it. It would seem I can do this with all the roms and then just swap them out whenever I want. This seems so easy that I wonder what the catch is - any comments from the pros? Also, I'm not exactly sure what each of the wiping steps does. Wipe data/factory reset? Wipe cache partition? and Wipe Dalvik cache? Can anyone enlighten me on those three steps? What do they do and why should I or should I not do them?
Hopefully this and some of the answers this gets will be helpful to our 10,000 new friends. Woot woot.
What you're doing sounds ok, and copying the backed up files to a physically separate machine is definitely a good idea.
I think that should all work ok thru fimware on 3588 or anything before that, but anything after 3588 is/may be problematic, due to a different bootloader. Also, keep in mind that some of the later stock TNT versions will also overwrite the recovery partition, so if any of those are flashed, they'll overwrite CWM if it's installed.

Awesome that you figured this out for yoursel! I have a stripped down version of vegan that I use only for playing music and movies. I stripped everything out but the basics to play flv and mp3. It gets over 10 hours of constant video play and is perfect for long trips. After I'm done I flash back to the backup I made just before and am ready to roll. Its almost like having two devices ;-)

So - my question to you is HOW did you strip everything out of Vegan. What I am trying to learn is where and how the different roms are created/manipulated. It is slow going doing it all by forensic deduction. I don't expect yu to give me all the details but a nudge in the right direction would be appreciated! Thanks for your thoughts.
After installing a custom ROM, I discovered I should have repartitioned my internal sd card, and fix permissions.
So, I carefully backed-up my data and started the process.
Everything was going as expected. Right up to rebooting the system. BEFORE REBOOTING THE SYSTEM RESTORE THE DATA. I didn't, and lost everything.

Titanim can save your apps and data but not what you have saved on your SD. With a repartition it is a clean wipe of your SD so all is lost, even the backup you have made through cwm that you might have forgotten to move to your PC pre format. Keep a nand backup on your PC at all times, I do a weakly backup and toss it on my PC. That way if I have a bad flash and need to repartition I'm not loosing much. Also I have a starting point other than a stock rom to work with after a full restore.luck favors the prepared ;-)

I wanted to switch to a ROM with a 1.2 Bootloader, but I was weary of all the steps involved. I went to this site, and he saved me a lot of time. After fighting to get my tablet to connect to my PC, it only took a few minutes to get to 1.2BL with a new ClockWorkMod version.
So i am very new to android, i did however figure out how to get root and get clockwork and flashed a custom rom. I have two questions. 1. I am currently running honeysense rom and see there is a 7.3 update, how do i go about installing the update? will doing the update erase all my apps i downloaded? If so i did back them up using titanium back up.... do i have to do wipe data, cache and all that in clockwork before installing the update?
2. If i want to do a completely new rom what are the steps to doing this as i have all this stuff on my sd card will post a pic of it curious as to what can all be deleted to free up space when starting fresh...
3. Last question sorry, i made a back up of "stock" rom before flashing the honeysense, and i named it "stock" where is that located??

I'm not sure what version it is, its on the download link for the rom's link I have a issue where my phone shuts off and gets stuck on the screen after the splash screen and stays there happens every two days or so and this update is suppose to fix it here is the link doesn't really say anything bout what version android it is
never mind i cant post links yet, but in honeysense forum section on here just uploaded a 7.3 suppose to fix my issue i dont think its a change in android version just a fix. If that is the case do i do apply update from sd or apply zip from sd?

You can just apply the update from SD, you can even do it with ROM manager and it's a little more straight forward. I'd just take a swing at it and hope it works, if not you always have backups you can restore.
And no, all of your backups should be on your SD card, you dont need to wipe the SD card when flashing a new rom.

ok its 312 mb so im assuming do a full wipe and reflash correct? if this is case can i copy the clockwork mod file that contains my back ups to my computer and also titaniumbackup file to my cpu do a install the rom on my phone then do a format of my sd card? and have it be blank then copy and paste clockwork mod and titaniumbackup back to my sd card and be good to go?

a full wipe does not mean wipe the SD card. you can leave that untouched
I think you misunderstood me, you DONT need to wipe your sd card, wiping data/cache wont touch your sd card, and flashing wont do anything to it either, you should be able to leave all of those files on it.
i got what your saying i just wanted to start fresh i guess you could say...with a fresh sd card and this newer build i just downloaded the file and its 312 mb so i figured i would just start back from scratch, and wondering if i can do a full wipe on the phone put the rom on my sd card flash it, i have a back up of the older version in case something goes wrong on my sd card can i take the backups copy them to my computer along with the files in titanium, after the format is done with the sd card copy and paste them back on the sd card and restore titanium files and if need be restore the previous version of the rom? so then i have all most of my free space back on the sd again. Will this all work this way?
Ok, i get what youre saying now. Yeah, there's no reason that won't work. I transfered everything from my SD to my computer and then back to another SD because i got a 32GB one. You shouldn't have any problem with that.

I got my first Android phone, which is an LG G2X 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
I have been searching around and found out you can root your phone which is kinda like jailbreaking an iphone.
I still don't completely understand how to do it though. I've seen a couple of threads that tell you how to root your Android device with something called SuperOneClick, but from what I understand, this doesn't work with the new Gingerbread.
Now from what I understand, you first have to root your phone, then flash it with CWM Recovery with NVFlash right?
Could someone please lead me to the threads that explain how to root a G2X with Gingerbread, and how to flash it with CWM Recovery.

although someone did post a way to root the gingerbread rom its pretty complicated for a new user.
the oneclick methods of rooting for the 2.3.3 dont exist.
if you want to be able to flash custom roms(which you do) than follow this link and it will walk you through what to do.

that will get you where you need to be. but it will not root the rom you are currently using youll need to flash a custom rom for that. in the development section youll see several roms either from source. or that are based on the 2.3.3 release and xboarders is the 2.3.3 with root only thats the only change.

Yes wipe everything. Here's a step-by-step method of flashing new roms:
1. Wipe Data/Factory
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe Dalvik
4. Wipe Battery stats - HINT. Always flash new ROMs with 100% battery to get the best battery life
5. Format/system
6. install zip from SD card
7. Fix permissions
8. Reboot and Enjoy!
All your paid apps will come again when you login to your Google account and set up your market. In Market, just press the menu button and hit My Apps and you should be able to re-install all your paid apps.

If you have Clockworkmod successfully flashed then you CAN now root without flashing another rom. Download the zip (theres one that roots, and one that unroots should you ever want that) file from the OP of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214. Save it to your sdcard, boot into recovery and select to install zip from sdcard. Navigate to the zip file and install/flash it. Reboot and you have rooted your system with all your files and apps in place.

I did this. My phone is now rooted, but I ran into a problem. I tried flashing CM7 through ROM manager, I cleared cache and Dalvik and then flashed the CM7 Rom, but when I go to reboot, the phone freezes at the "T-Mobile G2X with Google" animation.

Try it without rom manager. Power your phone off and then boot into recovery by holding power + volume down until you see the recovery splash screen. Do a full wipe and then flash cm7 again. After successfully installing cm7, or any rom for that matter, your first reboot may take several minutes while it builds the dalvik cache. Subsequent reboots will be MUCH faster.

Ah okay, I didn't know the first reboot takes longer. I'll give it a try from CWM Recovery.

Popular? Its really about personal preference but I'd say cm7, xboarders stock tweaked, miui, weapon, and eaglesblood are right up there at the top. If you want a more stock experience go with xboarders. Cm7 is fairly stock looking with a lot of useful features added. Miui is the opposite end of the spectrum, a very different kind of android indeed lol.
As for stable, any of the ones I mentioned are good, and probably others as well. Cm7 nightly builds are certainly useful enough to be a daily driver, but they have a few issues, but what else would you expect from nightly builds. They are development versions, not final releases.
Try a few and find what you like. Just make sure to keep a good working backup in case you fubar your phone lol.
Alright I got CM7 working and flashed google apps.
Now I have another little problem Before I flashed CM7, I used Titanium Backup to backup some of my game apps. After I flashed CM7, I go to Titanium Backup and none of my apps are there to restore. I connected my phone to my computer and I opened the Titanium Backup folder and the zip files and the PROPERTIES files are all there. How come I'm not able to restore my apps using Titanium Backup if all of the files are there?
I have the .apk files for the apps and I can just install them again, but I'm going to lose my save data.

I have never had success with Titanium Backup. Just reinstall your apks clean and forget about the old data. A clean install is better. Think about doing a new Windows installation. Do you want to import the crap that messed up your Windows in the first place? Android is the same way. Better to not import your old data and start new.

Wait no! Don't do that you can salvage ur save data.
What happens when you install CM7 is that the sdcard directory now points to your external sd card rather then the internal that comes with the phone.
the internal is now at /mnt/emmc
Get root explorer and you will see what I'm talking about.
Once you have root explorer just copy the titanium backup folder from /mnt/emmc to /sdcard and you should be able to restore all user apps with data... however DO NOT restore system data from stock to CM7... big headaches.

Too late, lol.
I deleted the Titanum Backup folder from my phone.
Oh well, nothing GameCIH can't solve.
Titanium backup goes to you internal sdcard. so you connect to you computer find the folder named TitaniumBackup or something like that, then move that folder to your sd card. Its just a matter of keeping same folder structure that titanium looks for (ie the correct folder name), and puttin the files in there, on the correct external sd card

oh also most of the time replacing the app doesn't work, just replace the data and it will work (unless of course you are actually trying to change the app in that case good luck).
I just did my first ROM / unlock / TWRP /CROM install today and all went perfect thanks to all the guides here, but I have some questions now, more so about my TWRP flash....
I just updated twrp from 2.3.3 to the newest 2.4.4 following their guide using goo manager. I assume it was successful because I'm typing on her now' however.... My home screen now displays <Safe mode> on thebottom left.... Why is this? Also, after the flash, I lost my swiiftkey board app? Actually, seemed to have lost all my apps lol... What did I do wrong? (I didnt titanium backup before I updated, didn't know I needed too lol)
Do most use both nandroid backup AND titanium or just one?
Think that's all I have for now....
BTW, on Cleanrom in her 3.4.7 odex i think...
Edit, I still have all my app icons on my screen, but not in the main menu?

Have you try to power down, then power it backup?? If successful you should have all your apps back.
Edit: what firmware you were on before flashing CROMI??

Hahaha, indeed of your luck! but not to worry, sdbags is going to get the update 4.2 dlpkgfile sometime today and we should see our 4.2 cromi sooner than expected...in a few days...
Few more questions
Just had a few more questions that I thought of while playing with my NEW tablet, (I honestly stopped using my tablet for months after I got it because it was so laggy, and CROMI has changed all of that!!!!!!!) and figured I would bump this thread vrs start a new one... Sorry for the noob questions, but knowledge is power and Im trying to learn! ( I do read alot! )
Currently on TWRP 2.4.4, CROMI 3.4.7 Odex w/ the OC Kernel 1.8ghz
Now, I have noticed a huge increase in my system files from when I came from stock... IE Stock, I had around 55gigs or something free on internal memory, now, I have around 30, is this normal and what is using that much space? I currently appear to have 2x backups in TWRP menu..
I also have got the Titanium backup as suggested, and backup regularly... But what exactly is it backing up other then apps? Does it create the same backup files that TWRP does? I assume TWRP is backing up the critical O/S files??
How many backups in TWRP are needed and when can I delete (if ever) some? Im guessing here, that TWRP is needed only if you get stuck in bootloop or some other situation that prevents a full boot to home screen?
Should I try to find the backup files in TWRP and Titanium and copy them to my home PC for safe keeping? (I did follow the guides and also have them on clouds)
When preforming a "clean install" of an updated CROMI version, will those backup files on the internal storage be wiped, or are they protected from a wipe / "clean install"? Is a "dirty flash" un-advised? I plan to only use CROMI roms...
I also downloaded the ROM manager thing, as suggested by some.... but, do I really need that? It seems like its just a Titanium clone, with some extras... Also, the ROM manager has some things like boot animations and such, are those safe to use with CROMI? I was looking at some apps to clean up my storage from junk files, but I wonder, if those apps are compatible with CROMI?!?

OK. I will provide you the best advise as possible but there are variations depend on individual taste.
1. Internal memory growth - possible you backup to your internal instead of external sdcard. Look for large file like videos, rom/kernel in the /sdcard/ download folder. Do clear cache weekly. I just assumed that you download all the roms and backup to your internal.
2. Backing up
a) TWRP - this is called nandroid backup. It will back up your entire OS with all the apps and cache and setup...everything. Before you upgrade from one rom version to the next you should take a backup before do so. Or once in a while if you making a major change to your OS on the same version, you should do a second backup. This backup can restore you back exactly the way it was before you mess up. The disadvantage is you don't have a choice to pick and choose what you can restore. It's either all or none. For this you should keep one backup for the current OS, one for major modified to current OS, one for new OS and one for major modified to the new OS, so total about 4 max. Unless you flashing more than just cromi. This nandroid backup will bring you back your previous setup if you have boot loop.
b) Titaniumbackup - This only backup your system apps, user installed apps and all the settings belonged to the app. You can't use this to restore your OS.(like when you have bootloop). It used to restore applications only. To keep the backup from growing, you should set Max backup history to 5. It's only keep maximum of 5 recent backups.
3. Clean install will only wipe INTERNAL memory, not your external SDcard. So it's highly to keep your Titaniumbackup and TWRP backup on your External sdcard. For double protection make a backup of your sdcard to PC.
4. Personally, I stay away from Rom Manager. Only use bootanimantion, themes etc.. from the tf700 threads. Rom Manager is not tf700 specific so some features may work, some may even brick your device.
5. App to clean up junkfiles - you don't need such app. Most of the stuff you download will be in the /sdcard/download or in the download app folder, example if you use Sugar Sync app to download, the download file will be in /sdcard/mysugarsync folder. You need to keep track of what you put onto the devcie is the best way to manage your internal storage. For external sdcard, you should keep 1), rom, kernel or any necessary zip files to reinstall your OS. 2) all your TWRP and Titanium backup files 3) Anything that important to you.

Internal memory growth - possible you backup to your internal instead of external sdcard. Look for large file like videos, rom/kernel in the /sdcard/ download folder. Do clear cache weekly. I just assumed that you download all the roms and backup to your internal.

Yes, I was backing up to the internal memory! I have now backed up TWRP onto my microSD card! I was trying to change Titanium's backup path to the microsd, and I have 3 folders: /storage -Red, not writable -sdcard0 -sdcard1- I assume red is a system folder, sdcard0 is the internal storage, and sdcard1 is the mircoSD, however, when I try to select it, it says "this folder cannot be accessed"?? How do I fix this? I have never formatted my mircoSD or anything, just plugged it in when it came in the mail, and it worked.... Got about 50 gigs worth of movies, and my new TWRP backup on it now....

How do I do this?? Would it be in TWRP menu??
TWRP - this is called nandroid backup. It will back up your entire OS with all the apps and cache and setup...everything.

Thanks for clearing that up! I thought nandroid backups were another type of backup, and the only thing I could find was an Online Nandroid backup app, so, of course I used that.... I guess I can get rid of that now!

Ok great, max is 5, so if I just use a value of 1, Im golden then! (BTW, honestly, the only apps I care about are what keeps my tablet running butter smooth, so..... Maybe that will change now that I have a tablet I can actually use lol)
Clean install will only wipe INTERNAL memory, not your external SDcard. So it's highly to keep your Titaniumbackup and TWRP backup on your External sdcard. For double protection make a backup of your sdcard to PC.

What are the chances of the mircoSD corrupting the files or becoming unreadable when I need to get those backups like TWRP / Titanium?? I assume the PC backup file push is the last resort if the above happened?
App to clean up junkfiles - you don't need such app. Most of the stuff you download will be in the /sdcard/download or in the download app folder

Actually, that folder is empty.... However, I found how to make it explain what was in each "file catagory" so I understand what is where and how big!
For external sdcard, you should keep 1), rom, kernel or any necessary zip files to reinstall your OS.

ALL of these files (rom,kernel, etc..,) would be found in the CROMI zip file I used on initial install? Would it be best to leave them zipped if so, or to create a folder and unzip and copy paste it in?

**** Directory of your external sdcard should be /Removable/microSD.

*** The chance is very small, but that's why I said a second backup of sdcard to your pc. It easy because it's all in one location (sdcard).

As I mentioned, I have never formatted my mircoSD.... Just opened its package (64g Scandisk something or another), plugged it in and its been working just fine ever since, although Xfering files is abit slow :/
Its currently formatted in a "Generic hierarchical" file system..... Being that it will be a life line for my tabby, will TWRP / Titan / etc.., be OK with reading, booting, and w/e else may be required from this type of file system??

That's not the real filesystem that the card is formatted with, that's what Windows sees 'through' the connection with the tablet.
