So I am getting the Xperia S soon and I need a simple way to root it. I just want superuser access to delete apps that would otherwise be undeleteable. It will be on Ice Cream Sandwich as well. Also, will this bootloader thing be locked, and if so, will it need to be unlocked to root the phone?
There is a thread in your android dev forum using ics rooting exploit so why don't you look for that, the guy that started it is called Tommy***** cant remember the rest of the name

So, when we get official ics, with the rooting process differ..? And if so, how? I know it may not seem like a huge problem, but for some reason tthis worries me alot. Thanks guys

If you already have the bootloader unlocked and clockworkmod recovery then you will be fine as people here will put out pre rooted roms both stock and tweaked. The thing to remember is no matter how much android changes it is still Linux and open source so people will still be able to edit the program to get root access.

But even though I have unlocked bootloader and clockworkmod, what if I take the ota..? Then what?

You will still be rooted if not just root like you did before. Google is not apple Google does not try to block root access.

Hey everyone,
I recently flashed stock build 4.0.4 IMM76D via fastboot.. I had been having troubles with my NFC after messing around with Google wallet (cwm zip install method) on 4.0.3...
Now I noticed that the Google tags app doesn't show up in my apps list (although it is in system/app...when I click on it in astro, it asked me to install, I say yes, it fails...).
Is this normal? I'm trying to get back to a perfectly working, stable, up to date system before I mess things up further
Is anyone running 4.0.4 able to run the tags app?

I think they depreciated it so it doesn't work anymore

Nice.. So I've been making myself crazy

So does 4.0.4 have any NFC capabilities? I'm not able to share/beam info over NFC anymore..

I think I used to have the Tags app, and I remember having my contact on the tag to share. However, I had a bit of a problem recently, had to take my phone to the shop to have it repaired and I got it back with 2.3.6. It auto-updated to 4.0.4, but ever since then the Tags app has been missing, so they I think they made some sort of change to the OTA update between the first rollout and last Thursday (when my phone re-updated itself).
And anyway, if it was deprecated, why keep it in the ROM?
Almost certain tags was never a app in the app drawer.
Let's try change the permission of tag.apk to the same as what other .apk apps'

I wouldn't recommend it. It's based on a leak which has the potential to permanently brick your device.

I ran it on mine and it was ok, but I was more fond of the GB based miui

If nothing comes on, no boot screen nor LED lights, you must be hard bricked. I've had the same problem with my previous A2. Had to get a replacement.

Not sure we're getting the real story here, or you're just not familiar enough with what you're doing yo know which update is what. ICS is Android 4.0.4 and Gingerbread (GB) is 2.3.6. So, if you've flashed a leak or rom incompatible with your device, you may have hard bricked.
The white light no power doesn't necessarily translate to a brick, may be something else. You could have run the battery down and if you had CWM the boot hijack might not allow for a charge after full drain with the way the hijack is done.
You may be fixable, or S.O.L. But, you need to be as specific as possible. There a couple of things you could try, but it's not guaranteed...

Like I said I am new at this whole android thing....love it, But I heard it was much more customizable.....cant find a root for At&t One X software 3.18....I've seen posts but are unsure if they work for my software. Without rooting is there a way to customize say the status bar notifications....(without Omega, worst program ever) what are my options for customizing I use nova launcher prime now...but even it only allows so much, is there a root? is there a program that will allow me to customize this phone to fit me?
Any help appreciated
HTC One X: stock at&t 3.18 running android 4.1.1-----cause god only knows when at&t will get the 4.2 update

Nope. Root is essential to customizing such things. All I can say is search search and don't forget to SEARCH and follow directions word for word. Good luck friend

Yeah...I don't wanna paperweight this thing and all the root files I find are 2.2 or lower....already bricked a Moto atrix 2...can't afford another incident, wife will kill me....I found one that uses adb but it requires SDK and I don't really know if I trust myself to do that...if someone knows of a root for 3.18 please share

no.
The OTA should be rolling out within a month or so I imagine.. hopefully you won't have to wait too long.
You must not have looked very hard, there is a root exploit for your firmware version.

My index thread found as one of the sticky threads at the top of General (also linked in the top post in Development) has all that you need, and clearly calls out which root method to use for 3.18: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Read up and understand what you are doing, before attempting anything.
Ok....so I followed the thread and re-read it over and over....found the android sdk method as well downloaded the SDK package with eclipse, still following instructions tried to test adb server and making sure phone was recognized
....and it never does register, I have debugging on....I have open source downloads on, the proper drivers for the phone....I got onexchopper, busybox, and ownage all in the same folder as the adb....when I plug the phone in to the usb post it all reads....HTC SYNC off, I plug in to the frost usb ports, would that matter?

Front...not frost

Try different usb cables/ports.
Make sure you have no phone software running at all for an y phone maker.
