Annoyed at having to wait for ICS or JB? - Android General

The press anti-Android spin this year has moved on from Fragmntation myths, to upgrade timescales. I would like to ask WHY Android owners expect to get upgrades the moment they are announced...
I mean if you wanted prompt updates, then the ONLY way is to buy a network-free Nexus handset. If you cheapskate and buy a network subsidised handset, why should you expect to get it the same time as Google can do without any hurdles in the way... If you buy a network-locked Nexus device, the network operator will want to get involved, if you buy a non-Nexus device locked to a network, then you not additionally have to wait for the hardware manufacturers tweaks.
This really isn't rocket science, so I am wondering why users expectations are so out of kilter with reality....
I don't own a Nexus device (although I do have a Nexus7 on pre-order), and whilst all my devices now have ICS, I wasn't losing sleep until ICS arrived, as in the Android world, you don't exactly lose very much, all Android apps works on all OS versions (pretty-much). Sure you might mis out on OS features, but not much else...

And what was the point of all that? You got pre-ordered a Nexus 7. Good for you, but the rest is clear to all of us. And i have seen people gettin mad about updates because the manifacture gave a specific date and didn't hold on the promise.....

everyone is different. Some are still happy with froyo and some others want to see jb on their phones as soon as possible most probably to test the project butter. Every release brings some improvement and humans have tendency to get the "improved version" of anything as soon as possible

Agreed. LG owners of models bought a year ago, which stated in the literature of LG they would get ics are still waiting. It was only recently we got gingerbread on some and that's why some get annoyed.
Manufacturers should honour their commitments or simply stop promising what they can't or won't deliver.

AFAIK, subsidies are rare outside of the US so you're paying full price for your phone.

Nope they are quite common at least in UK, here anyone can get phones subsidised by their carrier provided they take a contract for x amount of months. Often you get the phone for "free" but sometimes pay a percentage yourself.
Or you can buy from a third party and they can offer phones on contract with your chosen carrier that are also subsidised which is what I chose to do last year.

I thought that but it isn't quite correct as LG told me that if your phone is supplied by your carrier in UK it is they who put the updates out.
Apparently LG send them it and the carrier adds anything they want before offering it to the customer.

I just had to check this to be sure but Ireland and UK both follow same system which is European, whereby carriers release updates for the phones purchased direct from them.
If your phone is getting updates from manufacturer yet is using stock shop bought rom you're probably either lucky or got it from a source other than your carrier as apparently it is supposed to be the same as in UK.
Edit: by an odd coincidence the Irish times also mentioned this being the case http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2012/0712/1224319858525.html so you might just be very lucky

Well its happened with my X8, and my current phone, the XPERIA Play.
When I first got the phone there was NO carrier bloat ware on it?!
Both phones. But on my Dads X8 (which we bought on the same day, same shop) it had the bloatware.
But when he updated his phone there was no bloat ware, so I'm guessing he was also getting the update via the manufacturer?

Most people don't care or even know what version of Android they are running. As long as they can still download their favorite apps they don't care if they are a few versions behind. Think of all the people out there still running XP on their desktops since it still gets the job done.

I don't get why people complain about updating on a modding site.

If you've already seen the Xiaomi M1 announcement about a month ago, well, forget it, because Xiaomi has already made some significant changes since then. What we've just learned from today's Beijing launch event is that the M1 -- now officially "Xiaomi Phone" -- no longer packs a 1.2GHz dual-core chip; instead, it's been given a bump to a Qualcomm MSM8260 SoC, thus becoming the first Chinese phone to sport a 1.5GHz dual-core chip. As part of the Snapdragon package, the phone is also powered by a powerful Adreno 220 graphics processor, which will no doubt make good use of the phone's 1GB RAM and a staggering 4GB ROM. Oh, and that ¥2,600 (about US$410) price tag? It's now ¥1,999 ($310), and will be available for pre-order on August 29th for October delivery. Read on for more surprises!
Update: We've just been informed that there will also be a 1.2GHz version available for an even cheaper price!
Update 2: Our hands-on post is up!
Xiaomi Phone with MIUI OS: a $310 phone with 1.5GHz dual-core SoC and other surprises
Unlike most phones with a 1400mAh or 1500mAh battery these days, the Xiaomi Phone gets a ginormous 1930mAh cell instead, and we're promised to get two days worth of real-life usage out of it -- CEO Lei Jun emphasised the "real-life" part, so we shall see. Another surprise -- albeit an odd one -- is that this phone supports both GPS (with A-GPS) and Russia's GLONASS, meaning President Medvedev can navigate around his country just fine while updating his Weibo Twitter.
As for the rest, you get a 4-inch 480 x 854 LCD courtesy of Sharp (LCD for better outdoor performance, and 4 inches for Asian ergonomics), three touch buttons below the screen, a customisable "Mi key" (camera shutter or Weibo; long press for home screen), an eight megapixel camera with an F2.4 lens, and a dual antenna design that plays well with any kind of grip (obviously a little wink at Apple). Dimension-wise we're looking at 125mm x 63mm x 11.9mm, weighing 149g or 5.3 ounces -- just a tad heavier than the iPhone 4. As for accessories, we're told that there will cases in at least seven bright colors, along with spare batteries of the same set of colors (that's how awesome Xiaomi is).
Of course, let's not forget the real star here: the MIUI (pronounced "mee-you-eye") OS, which is a low-level custom UI based on Android 2.3.5. There's no question about MIUI's rapidly increasing popularity in recent years (Xiaomi quoted a user base of about 500,000), but if you insist on trying other Android flavors on Xiaomi's hardware, then you'll be pleased to know that this phone lets you flash whatever firmware you like.
If you're starting to doubt the Xiaomi Phone's reliability, you shouldn't -- we've been told that this phone's been thoroughly torture-tested in the lab, simulating two years worth of usage. "This is why we take much longer than shanzhai factories to make a phone," said the CEO. We'll see about that in two months time, really looking forward to it.

This was my first LG phone. While the hardware is great, the official software sucks. The way LG handled GB was lame, and they way they are handling this is lame, it's like they don't want customers to buy another one of their phones in the future. Well, I guess my next phone is going to be HTC or Samsung.

Yeah, this is my last LG phone.... back to Samsung or HTC for me and pawn this phone off to the girlfriend...
I've been lucky and not had any issues with my phone ...even when I was on the stock froyo rom. We ended up with a working GB rom from the cm team months before an official one was released. I'm sure if its possible someone will port ICS to our phones. If your one of those that doesn't flash roms and will only install stock roms from the manufacturers then you prob should only be buying nexus phones to insure upgrades, or you shouldn't be using android at all and buy an iphone.

The only way to tell LG that the "F" up is to stop buying LG phones.
It will take efforts from everyone to start telling friends and family not to buy LG phones and to go somewhere else. Get the movement going.......NO MORE LG! LOL
I think by making this move LG has messed up bad. Even if cm9 is released it will never take the full advantage of our tegra dualcore processor. LG must provide their version of ICS so that the cm team can improve our version.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Just saw this and even though I no longer have this phone I'm still pissed (cuz my brother does have it).
First a POS 2.3 update and now this slap in the face. This phone is probably one of the most Epic Fails that I've seen (software), as far as hardware it would still run circles around some of these new phones out including my SGS2.
Unfortunately it will never see it's full potential thanks to Nvidia for not releasing their source and LG for not updating it.
Yeah, these great devs can port any future updates, but it will never work to it's full potential.
Needless to say that I've learn my lesson and I will never buy an LG phone again. I'll stick to HTC and Samsung(which I hope they improve their track record).
Of course there will be ICS for us. CyanogenMod is comprised of some pretty freaking smart developers.
Did you seriously not see this coming? It took LG months to get the 2.3 update out the door and even then it shipped with a FroYo kernel. While the answer sucks, I give them credit for being upfront about it in their communication. That's more then can be said about how they handled the issues when the phone first came out. I got a G2X on launch day and returned it during the remorse period. I left T-Mobile over the experience.
They just deleted that comment ><

Unfortunately, as any Vibrant user will tell you, without an official release, CM will only work half-assed.
I just read that as well and I did not like it at all.
I think we need some how to request a promptly official comment/update on this matter from LG (LG Dev Team, LG Customer Care Dept, LG Folks, LG Product Pro, SmartPhoneGeek).
For me, if I do not hear any official positive LG commitment to their best Smartphone, I will be throwing the towel and asking my money back, because you guys have failed big with your own and with your Customers as well.

The G2x is falling behind in the market where everyone wants the Galaxy series (say hello to the galaxy blaze and the soon GS3) or HTC. If no one's been paying attention(and I doubt anyone does) HTC, G series, Samsung, and apple are the sellers. Not Lg, not pantect, not any company thats been a waste of funds for the last 2 decades of cell phones. But again, you know, ROMS aren't official, but they're only thing your G2x will get ICS with. Maybe an incompetent LG representative (since the Wind "O2X" is a G2X without the Tmobile logo) or on the contrary.

No ICS for the G2x

Not including any neutered roms we might get (no video drivers = half functioning phone), it seems that T-Mobile has finally sounded the death bell on ICS on the G2x...
from T-Mobile on facebook
T-Mobile USA Sorry for the mix up. Lg did confirm that the G2x would not get ICS. ^AS

why would they want to when t-mobile doesnt even sell their phone anymore
No surprise
But that just verifies what everyone suspected...we'll have to rely on the O2x....
Thought this was already known awhile o.o

It wasn't as of January LG said yes, they would. Last month they pushed the update from Q2 to Q3, now they are in fact saying a flat out no ICS for G2x.

Maybe I am missing something, but once the O2X gets ICS, can we not somehow get its video drivers for the G2x?

Yes that's not a problem, this thread is kinda pointless especially without a link of this guys info... even then we have at least 8 other threads about the exact topic.

If the O2x was getting it, so would the G2x as the only difference is the way the internal drives are partitioned. O2x will be cancelled as well, every major hardware manufacturer that has a Tegra 2 Harmony chip has said that those phones will not be getting ICS. You can bet that the O2x will not get it as well.
Confirmed Again No ics for G2x

That's not the only difference, T-Mobile USA is involved with G2X lol, the O2X isn't.

The thing with all this is that both companies screwed us over. In my case, I bought a high end android device a year ago expecting it to last me the 2 year contract I was signing with a phone company that would also be good. 13 months later, I read that even with a phone, that spec wise is still great, I won't be able to experience what is being offered by android because the manufacturer simply doesn't care anymore and I have to rely on modification and root to get what I paid for in hard earned cash? and to top it all off, T-Mobile begins charging me for tethering that when I signed the contract was listed as a feature that was included. This is why android, phone companies and all the manufacturers are going to ****. As a consumer we have to put up with all this and go through having to pay for new devices that have the latest "version" because the manufacturers don't want to spend time on a device they have already profited from even though it is fully capable of being up to par with most new devices. XDA, Rootzwiki and all the great people of the shared android community make this bearable, yet it is beginning to not be enough that we have to void a warranty in order to be content. I am tired of this and with the G2x being my 8th android device in 5 years of android I am just done with the same story every time.

It's ridiculous how they tease us
Android smart phones make dummies out of us.

Realistically, LG can only upgrade the international O2x if they make a small attempt, the G2x has to be tested & "approved" by T-Mobile and they're too lazy to do that (they deceptively make it sound like it's completely dependent on LG). So our best hope is to get the O2x's drivers working for a CM9 or AOKP build for the G2x.
I really am iffy about switching to the new 21y update. Should i dive? Or is it a stupid update?
Please LG release ics, your our only hope!

If you use GPS go for it then use CM7.2 RC3.
Though if you're fine and don't have any problems like me, stick with what you got.

announcement regarding ICS coming in July

Announcement:
With the recent announcement that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus series will be getting ICS next month (in July), and the implied failure of Samsung to deliver ICS in June after previously announcing it, Samsung has managed to take over the Second Greatest Lie in the World, displacing "I won't cum in your mouth." If Samsung succeeds in this same pattern for the next 8 months, it will have a shot at taking over the top spot, still held by "The check is in the mail." The current top three Greatest Lies in the World, in rank order, are:
#1: The check is in the mail.
#2: You'll get ICS next month.
#3: I won't cum in your mouth.
Company representatives declined to be interviewed officially for this story, stating that they'll make an official press release in the beginning of next month. However, they have allowed information to leak anonymously that Samsung believes they have held the #2 spot all along, as "I won't cum in your mouth" only applies to Apple products sold in the USA.
In addition, Samsung lawyers have filed in injunction in Canadian courts attempting to displace "The check is in the mail." According to the documents filed, Samsung believes that this statement must be broken into two seperate statements, one for paper mail and another for electronic mail. Doing so would allow Samsung's ICS promise to overtake the number one spot.

Damn gary, I thought you did known better.
Ics update to us is "eligible" for one of the greatest lies. There is no real position for it yet.

Hmm, I think you probably meant to say "of what decade".
Gents,
a few questions.
a.) Which is the functionality that is only present in ICS and you can't use it in
Honeycomb right now?
b.) If you are so fed-up with your Samsung why don't you sell it and buy something else?
Honestly for me it doesn't matter if I get ICS in July, August or next year.
I am just perfectly fine with the current 3.2 version. Both my 7+ and 7.7 can
do just the thing I need them to do.
It's just funny to see different threads talking about the same cr*p, how certain people is fed-up with their tablets but they can't do anything else then wine. Guess they are not THAT fed-up with the tablet at all (if they still have their tablets). Or?
Why did you wrote this post. Do you think we would agree with you even remotely. I think you'd better farted.

A) Better battery life, better memory management, the ability to clear the Recent Apps list, the ability to use Chrome, the ability to save videos offline in the YouTube app, fixed Wifi Sleep of Death issues, upgraded standard browser... The list goes on.
B) If the Nexus 7 shows up in store soon, I may well do so.
Most of those people would jump ship if there was a reasonable alternative available. Enter the Nexus 7 and maybe Asus's original tablet.
I agree in some parts with the pro HC guy. There are no strong reasons for someone sell or buy other tablets only for the ICS. And a lot of people are pissed with HC only because ics exists.
But unfortunately he posted In a slightly wrong thread. As this one is biased on the lack of respect of samsung on keep promisses.

I'm pissed with HC because it's still bugged - it's not GPU accelerated and gets sluggish at times, and many various bugs aren't patched - those fixes come in ICS (as listed above). More importantly Google appears to have completely abandoned HC support in favour of the unified ICS OS, which incorporates fixes and improvements to performance, battery life, various kernel bugs which caused the Sleep of Death problems, and more software is getting out there which either needs ICS for full functionality (or to run at all).
And the worst part? Samsung's been making empty promises for months, while pushing out tablets which are very similar to the 7+ in hardware with ICS already in place. All the while talking about how the original devices are eligible for upgrades... but then mysteriously letting the deadlines get extended. Even for Nexus devices, some of which are still waiting for current versions of ICS - yet they're able to ship out new Galaxy S III's with the most current Honeycomb version in markets where Galaxy Nexus phones are still waiting for 4.0.2 or 4.0.4 (which is on the Galaxy S III). It's obviously not a problem with being unable to recompile the radios or whatever's delaying those devices - it seems more that they're unwilling to deliver updates to keep your phone secure and current in features, and would much rather you buy a new device. Even if you're on the 'pure Android' Nexus, much less one of the Galaxy Tabs like what most of the people here have.
I'm just very, very glad that Asus got the Nexus 7 tablet - at least they deliver updates, even if some of the updates need fixing on occasion.
The only reason a Galaxy Nexus would be waiting on an updated is because of the carrier that it is on. Different carrier set-ups require different software tweaks. That's why only unlocked GSM devices are "true" Nexus devices.

I agree with you about the Samsung not updating thing because it isn't exactly new, so we really have no real grounds to complain about common knowledge.

Well u must put in consideration that not all of us use our tabs the same am I right? I agree that its not really that big of a deal. But I can see how it can for some people. Me and my friend bought the same tab but he uses it for almost everything. From entertainment(movies, gaming YouTube...) to school work. And I have seen his device its not as fast as mine. And if ics seems more promising then maybe its worth a shot. Its free right? You've got nothing to loose really? But personally I've tried ics on my sisters Sony tab and I must say that honestly there is a substantial difference in performance. As for heavy users I mean. But hey its just an update its a win win situation for everyone right?
Oh man, that was funny. Although, I was always under the impression that the number one lie in the world was, "I love you too."
The UK user manual has been updated on the 6th to include details about using ICS.
One can only assume that it is expected pretty sharpish;

Well, in my experiance of manuals being put on the website - the firmware has been released the following week. Has happened with Archos a few times.
