Which do people think will have the strongest ROM community between the HTC One X & The Galaxy S III?
ROM options are a strong factor in deciding what phone to get next.

can anyone tell me, how can i get a boot animation for my galaxy player 4? i have the R3 klin kernel and R5 klins rom.

You can unlock it using the official HTC Dev website - alot of issues at the moment as the site states it MAY void your warranty but to consumers themselves they stated that it WILL. Even though people are trying to return handsets because of faulty issues unrelated to bootloader or custom roms.

SGS3
Samsung phones are definetly more widespread than HTC phones. Most people just stay with their current brand...
Definitely SGS3. It may not sell as well as the predecessor but it will definitely sell millions, and that's what matters.
hi
it really depends, on which phone sells, and in what numbers.. the more numbers they sell the more bigger and better ROM community. I would say wait for a few months after release and see which phone sells better.
the GSII/9100 was probably the first BIG-SELL for a non-iphone, and hence has a big community, and is still selling...
I really doubt if GSIII would equal the success of the GSII, as most people still have the GSII with them. The only folks who will buy it are the older phone owners.
also, I read somewhere Samsung chose to use a inferior-performance-quad processor over a superior-performance-dual-core for marketing reasons, and probably to recover some costs over its quad-core development, so at least I am going to wait and watch for a while, and am not sure how many of us here share my perspective...
Anyways... enjoying wanamlite+siyah3.1.2 on my gsII for now...
Hey! I know I'm not the only one who has asked this, but I'm about to buy a new phone and I'm having a really hard time deciding!
I'm really liking the Nexus (though I really wished it had an SD card slot), considering it's from Google and so it gets what seems the best Android experience and support.
The Galaxy S3 seems quite impressive (though I dislike it's design), it has a much better processor, 8mp camera and other feauters the Nexus lacks. But I'm just wondering if it's really worth the money. Is the S3 far superior than the Nexus?
I want a phone I can customize, that runs smoothly and with which I can play some games (like Temple Run). Please, your pros and cons about both phones! That would help me.

What carrier are you on?
Sent from a JellyBean Poppin MoPho
If you're anything like me, the less you have to mess with buggy roms and flashing and potential bricks - the better. The GNex will have Jellybean out of the box, while for the S3 you'll be relying on custom roms and such that in my experience almost always have *something* wrong with them, and of course there's the potential of bricking your phone.
Regarding power, for the vast majority of applications the Nexus is well up to the task. There aren't many games or power apps that will chug on a Nexus but not an S3.
As far as cameras go let's face it phone cameras just aren't that great. If you really want to take good photos, get a camera.
The only true reasons I can think of to get an S3 over a GNex are 1: expandable storage since the GNex only has 16gb and no SD slot, and 2: removable battery. I find myself regularly having to pull the battery as a way to hard reset when something hangs or dies. Unless the GNex has a button of some kind that serves the same purpose (?) I would be worried about this, especially if you plan to root and flash.
TL;DR : If you like to flash roms and have lots of control, the S3 is a far better option. If you just want a nice phone that works well and doesn't have all the bloatware, and don't plan on storing massive amounts of stuff on it, the GNex is a better choice for the money.
Hope that helps

It really helps! By the way, I didn't know the Nexus didn't have a removable battery! That's one of the reasons I discarded Xperia S and HTC One X.
A part of me is telling me to get the Nexus, which is cheaper, has more support, Jellybean out of the box and in general seems like a nice mobile.
The other is telling me to get the S3, which is superior hardware wise, has an SD slot and removable battery.
This is a tough decition! Haha. And like I said, I won't have a contract with any carrier, I just want to make a good choice. But thank you, you gave me good points to think about!
P.S.: By the way, the camera is not that important, I just want a decent one for when I have only my phone with me, as I love taking pictures. I currently have the Sony Xperia Pro, and I can't complain about the camera.
I don't know what that guy is talking about...but the Gnex has a removable battery.
I was in a similar situation and in the end I chose the Galaxy Nexus. You need to ask yourself:
Do you care more about hardware (camera, processor, looks etc.) or more about software (Jelly Bean, better development, etc.)?
Click to collapse
In my opinion:
1) If you are excited by new software updates and features, go with the Nexus...
2) If you don't care about software and ROMs and are just a normal user, go with the S3...
3) If you like Touchwiz or just want the most powerful phone at the moment, go with the S3...
4) If you want 'vanilla' android with no bloatware or themes or skins, go with the Nexus...
I went with the Nexus because I would have the phone for the next 2 years on contract and the Nexus would be updated, officially or via ROMs, for that period. Also, with the JB update on the Nexus, the Nexus is as fast as the S3 on ICS. The Nexus will be supported for quite a while as it is a 'Google' phone but the S3 will be outdated soon if you are on contract. Finally, development will always be more for the Nexus and, in my opinion, you are getting a phone which, although is not nearly as good as the S3, is half the price. Therefore, I think the price gap between the two phones is not worth the small gap in performance and usability. Hope the helped!
Removable battery is only an issue if you want to carry around spare batteries and swap them over as they die. Hold the power button for 10 secs on my One X and it does a hard reset.
If you can afford it I'd suggest the s3. Better hardware, not a pentile screen, excellent custom rom support, and just more flexible.
I'm wishing I got the S3 instead of my One X when I upgraded from my gnex.

I seriously don't understand why these guys are answering when they have no clue what they are talking about. So now the GSIII doesn't have a pentile display? Please show me a link stating that.
To be completely honest I'd strongly recommend the s3. Software you can change, hardware you're sick with. Will the nexus get software updates first? Yeah, but the s3 still ends up getting them. Hell my s2 it's getting jelly bean. The processing power boost is very noticeable, despite what people say. And with the nexus there will be times you'll notice it, it's very painful it doesn't hurt to get a nicer camera anyways, and your media experience will be fantastic with the s3. Not saying either are a bad choice, the nexus is a great phone, but I'd even choose the s2 over it, and i did. The s3 is very much better than the s2. In my personal opinion, i would say s3. But you can't go wrong either way. Hope i helped

Well if you are able to get the quad core version of the S3 then S3 > Nexus. If not I would probably go with the Nexus since it will probably save you a couple of bucks.

Another thing..if you go to the Nexus forums, there are ALOT of people that sold their Nexus, got a GSIII, missed the Nexus, sold the GSIII and came back to the Nexus. Yes, the GSIII has better specs, but technology is so good now that you hardly notice it (unless you are a hardcore gamer).
Thanks a lot! This is really a tough decision! Now I think I'll choose the Nexus, because as I said (and you said) it has more support and it's a great phone in general. What I don't like is that it only has 16GB ROM, if it had an SD slot, this would be much easier!

I've been having the same dilemma. Im a T-Mobile customer, but without an actual contract. I just have the plan that doesnt give a subsidized phone. Here is the think. I'm between the GS3, the Nexus or wait for the G Note 2 or HTC One X+. The GS3 is probably the best phone right now, but it cost as low as 600. It has a lot of functionalities, but i dont think anybody will use all of them. GNex will have more support for future Android version and it cost only 350. It doesnt have the same functionalities as the GS3 or it is not probably as responsive and I hate that doesnt have an option for microSD or an 8megapixel camera and specially that feels and loons a bit cheap. The G Note 2 and One X+ will be awesome, but will cost probably 600-700 and will go on sale as soon as septemter.
Right now im deciding for the GNex since has Jelly bean and will get more version. It is only 350. And I think it is as responsive as you really need right now. It has NFC, im not locked in wait for an Android update that could never get.
Should I go for it?
thanks
I'd say, go for the Galaxy nexus. Yes, the S3 is superior in some aspects but when it comes to customization I'd go for the Galaxy nexus. They're both customizable, yes. But the nexus is better cause it has support from Google. You won't need to flash roms just to experience the next big thing

I'm right now using a Nexus S which I'm really happy with but Rogers is offering a really nice plan extremely better than my actual one and cheaper.
I'm just looking for some opinions from you guys to help me chose.
Thanks.
I never understood this kind of a question. It is just too subjective with so many factors. If having the latest and greatest software is important go with a Nexus. If not....you really need to compare and decide what is right for you. They are both great phones. I suggest handling them both and get a good feel for each.

S3 is supposedly getting updated to JB late in the fourth quarter 2012.
If you can wait, well then I say go for the S3, if not then go with the Nexus. Personally, my opinion is to grab the S3. You are on XDA after all! Grab yourself a custom Jelly Bean ROM! (The devs are everywhere on the S3 thread, expect one to come out soon if it hasn't come already.)
Definitely the s3 if you are a rooter or not because even tho the s3 doesn't have jelly bean officially its definitely worth the wait. The s3 has a faster processor, better screen, more ram, bigger battery, and overall newer hardware! Its worth the wait for jelly bean!

SGSIII if you like modding, installing new ROM's etc,
Nexus if not as you will get the latest firmware more or less first.
hi maxx1601! i've a galaxy nexus and personally i think is the best android phone for some reason: first it's the official google phone, so the android developing is based on it and with jelly bean google resolved the few ICS's bugs; second it has a dual core cpu (is enough for all android operation and using, we don't need more), that make battery good against the gsIII that has in my opinion too many power enhancements like quad core cpu ecc. that cause battery drain under android, has got a user interface that is second to google pure UI, that personally love; gsIII has olso a too big display ( nexus display is enough bigger, good for browsing, gaming, texting, using apps like maps and google earth that need a large display). my advice is to buy the galaxy nexus, and don't forgot, the price is olso a good thing to keep in mind it costs only 399 $ now ( mabe less i don't know) and is full supported for updates by google and developers that have a solid base made by google. i hope it helps, I wish you have a good choice! :fingers-crossed:

Agreed. HOX worth consideration... Amazing screen, hardware and build quality. Upgraded from GNex and very happy I did. Screens side by side makes AMOLED cringe worthy.

And samsung was supposed to have ICS for most of their phones in the first quarter and didnt release them until the 3rd quarter. Thats probably the nicest thing about owning the nexus you know that you will get the updates and you will get them on time. The SIII will get support for updates until the next flagship samsung phone comes out and then they will put it on the back burner just like they did with the SII, skyrocket etc... That was the most frustrating part when i had my skyrocket, i had a phone that was less than a year old, had decent hardware and i knew it would probably never get updated past ICS, because once the SIII came out samsung and AT&T had moved on.

Hey ive got an Galaxy Nexus now for over two month and I must say its just awesome, especially in combination with these forums (There are tons of good roms for the GNEX=
The best part about the phone is the stock android experience but thats personal preference.
I also tested the S3 and its a great phone but i dont like the Samsung custom Software that much.
I've had the Galaxy s3 for about a month now and love it.the camera options are awesome, decent selection of ROMs available and some cool compatibility programs if you have dlna devices at home.

So with the new announcement of the Nexus 4 and how it will work on T-Mobile's network, I've been wondering if I should sell my One S to buy the Nexus 4? Is anyone else having similar thoughts? I am really interested in the bigger screen, higher resolution, as well as the S4 Pro processor and the 2 GB of ram. The One S has served me well but waiting on an official Jelly Bean release from HTC has been a big pain, though ParanoidAndroid has helped me deal with that. I can't imagine it being supported officially when 4.3 comes out.
Just wondering what everyone else thinks of the Nexus 4 in comparison to our One S.
Sorry, I didn't realize I was posting to the General section. This should belong to the Q&A section. I tried, but I don't know how to delete or move the thread.
I feel bad for messing up.
No worries a mod will move it. But on topic yeah its a great upgrade, it has the best specs on the market right now and it's only £279 I have already decided to upgrade and we can sell are one s on eBay and get the nexus 4 for like £30 on top.

I'm actually considering the same thing. Allthough the one S is a gorgeous device with good preformance and a wonderfulll build quality. But for this price its a real bargain, and as im on a 2 year contract i doubt the one s will keep up to speed. Plus I'm afraid alot of dev will jump ship aswell (some allready are).
Pro's for getting the Nexus 4 over the one S
- Better screen, this was a mayor lackbuster for the one S
- Newest chipset, allthough the oneS is doing a great job here, there is no denying the power of the s4 pro, and the nexus has a fresh aosp on top of that.
- Huge development community behind it
Con's
- Allthough the nexus has a great camera it doesnt has the same preformance and usability (burst, 0shutterlag, ect.)
- No sense. Yes its bloat, but we can't deny the solid preformance it has nowdays, and if we look at what 4.1 did for the one X i think i rather have a fun Sense ui over a vannila blend aosp nowdays (boring).
- I think i prefer the build quality on the one S, and it looks alot better aswell.
Still with this display, preformance, newest android builds is it hard not to consider it, especially with that price. And the development behind the nexus devices are really tempting too.
I'm buying the LG nexus 4 and selling HTC One S S3 because this phone was garbage. This was my last phone from HTC.
Goodbye HTC (crap), hello Nexus 4!
I like my HOS S4 but I cant resist the S4 Pro chip and the 2 GB of ram. The only con is the lack of an SD slot like the HOS.

There is just one "small" problem. It looks like in Italy the phone it will cost probably 549€ or 599€ instead of 349€ like Spain\France\Germany(via play store)...so I won't sell my One S

This pretty much sums it up. I wont buy it, as my contact lasts one year
Will probably move to it as well, main reasons are
- nexus phone therefore we get updates as soon as they are released and will be guaranteed to get them
- bigger screen
I love the one s, prefer sense to stock android, will probably have a better camera and it has way more features, prefer Samoled, better design/build etc. but HTC as a company have really let it down with support and slow updates, can't see jb hitting my phone for another 4 weeks or so....
I just need to see reviews of it first and user opinions for the audio, camera and battery life, there are reviews for the optimus g, but lg's software seems to have been very poorly optimised (software/driver optimisation is very important in these areas), although these areas still look very good anyway except the camera.
In theory the battery should be better than the s as the n4 has a next gen battery, more power efficient screen and s4 pro, the adreno 320 is more power efficient than the adreno 225
I'm tempted by it so much too just cause its a new phone lol ... But I really don't like the huge screen and I'd miss my camera too much cause the camera the HOS has is too good .. Wow, are you me? I really do love the camera on the One S and the build quality just feels excellent; the two things that I would say it has over the Nexus 4. I like the cool metal case and just how professional and solid it feel. Though HTC is not so good at delivering updates, in my opinion it is the most reliable OEM out there. So i won't move to LG or Samsung. My reason is based mostly on build quality, which kida sucks on LG and Samsung when compared to HTC.
Also, i don't really see the point in having the latest gadget. The HOS S4 will still be breathing at least a year from now, the CPU and GPU are strong enough. Plus, i don't really see how a quad core will help me on a mobile phone.
The only Nexus i really miss is the original Nexus One, the HTC Desire's brother.
You do realise that lg have nothing to do with the software? All they have done is made the phone and everything regarding software is handled by Google since it's a nexus phone.
Google said they shipped the lg design team over to Google headquarters in order to work with them very closely on the design and ergonomics of the phone.
Lg make fantastic hardware and a lot of their phones are very good as usual they are let down by the poor support and awful software.
I am really thinking about selling my One S S3 and getting a Nexus 4. I seems to be a very good phone.

I would definitely agree if you have the One S S3. It would be a significant speed bump and there probably isn't a significant con to the Nexus 4 that the One S doesn't share (non-removable battery, no SD card, etc.). I think the S4 version would be a tougher decision as to whether or not to upgrade to the Nexus 4.
Im getting the Nexus 4 the second I have the funds.

Especially if you have the black model, which has chipping issues.
Only way is if you can find someone around your area who don't have a clue about tech/android stuff.
If you had an upgrade what would you choose.........
My choice would be the one. I like the LCD screen found on the DNA. I have alot of faith in the 4 Ultra pixel camera. I want a phone that doesn't feel like a child's toy. The quadrant scores on the One were amazing, although I'm sure the S4 will come close. What would you choose?
FYI: all phones have ultra pixels, however there 1.1. The ones found on the One are 2.0. Just saying

HTC uses perfect materials, it feels great when you hold it in your hand
Currently on an htc phone and with HTCs inability to update software in a timely fashion that makes me question them all together.
I have a samsung tablet but I am leaning towards the S4 due to samsung overall being the better product and updating things in a timely manner.
It took htc nearly a year to get ics on this and it's horrible for everything.
Go with Samsung. Overall it's just better supported and more highly recognized

Wait, so we should get a device based on what is more recognized? That's an awesome view you have there, lol!
Wondering what was so bad with ICS? I have an Amaze the wife uses and runs fine, funny she has actually had 3 OTA updates compared to my two on my s3.
I can't wait till the One drops! Definitely my next phone for sure.
Oh and you think HTC uses plastic now? The One is all aluminum....wow, so misinformed....

Well currently the htc one isn't available on my carrier. So the best phone available is the S3 and soon to be S4. I don't hate htc I just could care less to stick with them
And it's called my opinion for a reason. If you don't like it then that's your opinion

The event for the unpacking of the GS4 was ridiculous! Seriously I watched the hole "show" and I was awaiting for the new killer feature that would erase the concurrents.
First of all, the design. Some of you may say "don't change the lineup of a working team" but personally I'm tired of the same designs with Samsung devices lately. It's the same on the GS3, on the note 2 and now on the GS4 ? Show some innovation Samsung!
I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built.
HTC really got that and the amazing device that is the ONE is the proof.
You can't say "yeah I choose my device because it'll have more updates!". Wrong!
Every high marketed device comes with killer features ! 2gb of RAM? That's normal now. 32 or 64 gb of storage / 5 inch screen? Normal too...
The thing is they all look alike in a hardware point of view, that's why nowadays the design is very important.
A good design means a device built with beautiful and premium materials and that the device's design changes from the device that came out before.
Samsung didn't get that. Although the S series of Samsung is gonna sell at uncomputable numbers every one knows that, I don't think it's a major need to upgrade from the s3 to S4 because I just don't see the point except waisting money.
I think it may attract some of those who will walk in a store and see the device (thanks to the amazing job of marketing that Samsung always does) but for those who were waiting it to be a great and revolutionary device, the disappointment is the real feeling.
HTC ONE is the killer smartphone of 2013's beginning, sorry Samsung you'll do better next time. Or not ^^
Wrote a lot, if you agree with me let me know and if you disagree i'll be holding my breath awaiting your arguments !

Me getting S4. Although HTC One has better build quality but for everything else, HTC is not the company I would bet on. It will probably never get updates after one or two.
On the other side Samsung is adding more and more features in each update and from last year when I purchased S3, I already got 3-4 updates. Plus they already working on another one with all these latest features.
On hardware side, I think S4 has upper hand on HTC One. Battery is larger, processor is faster, S4 Screen is bigger but phone is little smaller. S4 Screen is better. Not to mention expendable microSD slot and replaceable battery.
So I would not want a phone with better built quality but strong specs and better features.
I think that's the main reason why I switched from iPhone to S3 in the first place. I know a lots of people might hate me for saying this but iPhone has best build quality among all phones out there.
So definitely Galaxy S4.
I said " I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built."
So please understand my sentence as it sound ^^
I'll say again maybe in other words this time, when you grab an iPhone 5 and when you grab a S3, don't tell me that the S3 has a more premium look and feel... And that's not a question of opinion, that's a fact.
I never mentioned the prices of the devices but if you want to, we'll see the price of the S4, when they'll show it at 699$ then you'll tell me the difference with the iPhone. The only device that is worth talking on a price basis is the Nexus 4. The rest of'em are just a scam

what HTC have done with the ONE is ground breaking on both hardware and software,no other company has changed its hardware software so radically from its previous flagship device. With out HTC and the like apple and samsung's upgrades would be even less

iPhones honestly aren't worth the price no matter how discounted they are.
While they may be built better your comparing apples to oranges. No pun intended on the apple thing.
But really I think we can all mostly agree here that android overall is better.

Well it's probably true for new buyers. But for a experienced users, it matters.
When I switched S3 from iPhone, I didn't actually know about all this. I had option to choose S3 or HTC One X and I went with S3 because it's more popular and had better support.
From what I learn in last year, I could never buy HTC or Motorola phones.
These companies never support their devices. They even lock bootloaders so we cannot update our devices ourself or install updated custom roms.
I am also a little disappointed with S4 release but I would pick S4 over HTC one any day.

This was exactly like last year for me.
I wanted a phone with huge storage capacity/microSD capacity and long battery life/removable battery with decent specs. And QWERTY but I have given up on the last thing.
The HTC One X was released and as pretty as the White one was, it definitely was not a purchase I was willing to make and I waited for the Samsung Galaxy S3 announcement. The announcement came and Samsung gave me what I wanted. I bought the S3.
Fast forward this year. HTC One announced. Still no microSD slot but looks like decent battery life. Looks very pretty too (I still think the white One X is the best looking HTC phone though). Not bad this time around HTC but let's wait to hear from Samsung. S4 gets announced and again, they have what I want from last year.
If I was choosing again between HTC or Samsung this year: Samsung Galaxy S4 because it has what I want from last year.
Luckily I want more stuff this year which is why I'm not going to buy a S4. My S3 is lovely and I don't need to buy an S4. However, I now really want a bigger screen. This year, I'll be looking to buy a Note 3 or competitor version as long as it has a huge screen, huge capacity/microSD, huge battery.
Honestly, I don't care what company you are or even what your phone looks like (I bought the S3 for god sakes). Just give me what I want and I'd buy it. I'm also eyeing the Blackberry Q10 simply because of the QWERTY but I think my lust for a bigger screen will win out. Plus the stylus is alright...right?

I will probably get Note 3. I also do not rule out possibility to get S4, if I get some cool discount.
