Hi guys most of you might find this question silly but there are some of us newcomers who are still getting into this!
So, I rooted my phone, have ROM Manager and CWM Recovery, version 3 and my question is how we're going to update to official GB when it becomes available? Will we do it through official T-Mobile update, or will some of you guys make it available for us?
Thank you all!
Yes...
you should be about to get it either way. If you get the official update you will probably lose root... If you wait a few there will be a rooted version posted by one of the many xda members...

One more dumb question: Why is everybody so excited about the official GB update, when we have right now a few GB leaked versions with some custom ROMs (Bionix from TeamWhiskey, etc... ) available, for which as I hear, many say are excellent? Is this official one gonna be better in any significant way than these custom already out? Thanks! )

It will come with an official GB kernel and hopefully updated battery drivers and A2DP functionality...Amongst other LG fixes (again, hopefully).

OK, I get it... So, all these unofficial GBs are sort of limited because they lack these LG stuff they're (hopefully) putting into the official one. That's why it's smart to wait a bit more.
Hopefully it will fix most or all the problems.

Yes, that's the case. The leak has issues (which makes sense, it's not a finished build), and almost all Gingerbread mods are based on the leak so they have the same issues. I know CM7 is using the Gingerbread source instead and has fixed a lot of the issues, but not all of them.
The official update is not only going to be completely stable (hopefully) but will come bundled with better drivers/kernel support which will fix most of the common issues with the phone (hopefully).
I've gone through an Over The Air update to Android before, and if it's like what I experienced, you're going to get a pop-up that asks if you want to update now or later. Choose later if you want to keep root, someone here will have the official build rooted probably within the hour but definitely within the first couple of days.
In the mean time though, don't be scared of trying out one of the ROMs that are available. I swear by CM7, but I've heard wonderful things about EagleBlood and Ultimate too.

I have heard that official updating the rooted phone could actually brick it? And when a mod is nightly version, does it mean it it not completely stable? I am interested in CM7, but I could not find a stable version on their site.
Thanks!
i have question also since it's related to thread title. i'm running stock right now but rooted. once i update to gingerbread cm7, will i have to install all apps and settings all over? and will call log and stuff like that disappear also?

You should be able to get all of that stuff after startup my hitting the square boxes in the initial setup. Worked for me yesterday with the Eagleblood 2.3.4 ROM, when someone recommended it to me rather than Titaniumbackup which screwed up my phone a lot because I went from Froyo to GB

When I did an OTA update, it kept all of my apps and settings. I can't remember if it preserved call log.

I don't know if it will brick or not, my OTA was not rooted. And CM7 nightlies are NOT completely stable, but they're on build 58 by now and the ROM works perfectly fine. The only issue I can see with the phone is the top bar they added to the notifications menu that has toggle-able settings like WIFI, GPS, etc sometimes doesn't show up and in the camera, it calls both cameras "back" instead of one being "front".
But if you're concerned with stability that much, use the leak or EagleBlood.
I'm still on (rooted) Stock 2.3.5. Even the the last round of 2.3.6 failed to install, so I never got any of the new 2.3.6 goodness I heard some describing -- new modem, drivers, etc. for better connectivity and longer battery.
Does the ICS leak brought to us by DesignGears include all of that extra goodness I was supposed to be getting in 2.3.6?
You will get a new modem, new firmware, new OS that will be better than 2.3.6. ICS 4.0 and GB 2.3.6, comparing the two, are like comparing apples and oranges.
That's what I was hoping.
When 2.3.6 made the rounds I read some stuff got skipped if you just flashed the ROM (i.e. the newer modem?)
I guess this leak is more than *just* the 4.0 ROM then.

yup, its an entire **phone** update, and I'm jealous :-D
I just bought an Atrix 2 today for my girlfriend. Hi Atrix people
So could someone introduce me?
My phone is the photon and I love it! One thing I've noticed from browsing this thread is that there isn't much ics support going on. Could someone tell me why? I thought the only real differences between the Atrix and Atrix 2 is the cam and a few minor features.
Anyways I'm really just interested in what's going on with ics for the Atrix 2. Anything I should know or be up to date on for cm9 or anything ics?

Unfortunately we don't yet have an unlocked bootloader, which is holding up development. There are a couple of devs working on a bootloader bypass from what I've read. So as soon as they have it ready and working then I think development will start kicking. I think there are a couple of devs working on an ics port as well.(fingers crossed!)

Thanks for the quick reply. Has anyone tried communicating with other Motorola devs? Like from the photon, razr, current moto androids. With the photon I know that its bootloader was unlocked redneck style just to get the roms rolling. We had to sacrifice 4G (wimax) data but it was worth it.
Within a month we had several choices for ics with everything working. And anything gingerbread was perfect. No need for an "issues" section in OP lol

Uh, yeah. We have a few ROMs. There are very few actual issues. A lot of the problems come from people not knowing what they're doing or making simple mistakes (i.e they read something wrong) the phone itself is very solid and stock works great. Just make sure you root it.

I'll be rooting in a few days just sad that ics is almost nonexistent on this phone. The other roms from what I've read seem pretty solid. But the only one that I'm interested in is still barely alpha and from the OP its not stable enough to use as a daily...

Well, CM9 is actually fairly stable minus the radio and sd card functionality (which can be fixed by flashing a zip). And we're just waiting on bl unlock/bypass or a leaked early Moto build of ICS for our A2 so we can get the radio working.
ICS will be around sometime in July-September. We're hoping to get it through cheesecake probably in June or late May.
The CM9 Nightly build you are talking about is VERY shaky.
Most of these GB Roms are very smooth, fast and stable. I'm currently using Lithium and I love it.
Just be patient. It's coming.
We are supposed to get am ota release of ics in q3 of this year. That's not to far down the line.

When it comes to Motorola don't expect a leaked ics before its released. They aren't know for that. Also what zip do I need to get calling and SMS working for cm9? I started reading through the thread but got distracted working on my cm9 build for the inspire

That might be true... but we got the 2.3.6 update from cheesecake months in advance, so once we have that we should have a stable CM9 build.

Leaked? Of course not. We just pull it straight off their development servers .
Calling/sms/data do not work in CM9 for the A2 because we need a functional ICS radio which we don't have atm. Once Moto starts pushing early builds to their servers we should be able to pull the necessary radio files and get a stable(ish) CM9!

My e4gt, inspire, and photon the gingerbread radios work just fine. Also the first Atrix, captivate (all of the first Gen galaxy s series) all work perfect on ics. None of which have any kind of leak of ics. What makes this phone different with its gingerbread radio?

I believe its possible without the sources from Motorola. I've seen several other roms do this just fine without any kind of manufacture support
I would like to look into this but I can't seem to find a rom.

Exactly. We don't need help from Motorola. It would just make things easier. I miss the devs from the first Atrix. Geniuses when it came to porting ics to that phone and when I talked to some of them they told me this phone should be a breeze compared to the Atrix and photon considering the tegra CPU/gpu. Which at the time before the Xoom got ics they had nothing to go off of and pretty much completely redesigned the basic arm7 chipset to trick the phones into thinking that's what it had inside

From what I understand cm9 for the Droid 3 boots on our phones, except the radio doesn't work (obviously) and there's some sort of issue with SD cards.

The SD card problem can be fixed (through a flashable zip). This is because other phones such as the Droid X have really common radios which developers have already written ICS drivers for. The Atrix 2 has a completely different radio that really doesn't have any similarities with any other Motorola. We only have a couple of actual devs really familiar with linux/android. We're lucky enough to have the Droid 3 build work as well as it does... Just wait. Only a couple more months

We don't need to wait. Other devices have done it without help from other devices and even when done so it may pull from several other devices instead of just one. Also can someone explain to how joker was able to build a cm9 build for the Atrix 4G with only cyanogenmod sources and some Google parts? Do we not have anyone on this device knowledgeable enough of Linux or cyanogen to build from source instead of from the Droid 3 or use some of droids cm9 and build the rest from source? Ics drivers have been optimized for the CPU and we don't need a ics radio or ics radio drivers for ics. The Atrix and photon still use stock gingerbread radio and radio drivers for its build with minor ics tweaks to get them running. 90% of ics builds still use gingerbread radio source with no problem. The other 10% are devices with ics leaks or releases.
Btw can someone please send me the work that's been done so far on cm9 or do I need to get it from the Droid 3 forum? Has anything been done other than changing branding to get it working or was it just "oh its cdma guess we'll wait"?

the new firmware is PDA:LPC/CSC:LPC (xar)
Current firmware is PDA:LA3/CSC:LA3 (XAR)
I was wondering if I should bypass this update (I really don't know what it's for) so I'm not sure if it'll be more of a hassle & if it's going to change some of the customizations I've made (mainly root & GaryD9's read/write sd card permissions fix) or if it'll leave my tablet the way it is & just update the firmware like it should. I decidedI'm gonna wait until the official US ics is released til I update to ics since I've already waited this long. Is this update something you have to have to be able to update to ics? I am hesitant cuz I just hate when you do an update after you have everything absolutely perfect & then an update that's supposed to fix stuff messes other stuff up!

The new firmware is the ICS update.
Hi there.
It looks like we are not getting ICS here in Canada.
Mine 6210 runs HC with HDMI adaptor just fine.
Should I try to apply UK ICS ?
Will I loose HDMI feature?
Thanks.
I really want to upgrade my phone to a 4.1 custom ROM that is compatible with system themes or a 4.0 custom ROM with system themes capabilities (CM,AOKP, etc.). I could not find any 4.0 ROMS with system theme compatibility (currently running SwiftyTrixy 1.3). I tried MagicMod 4.1 based ROM but the lack of video camera functionality made me revert back to a 4.0 ROM. I need a 4.1 ROM to have video camera working and be suitable as a daily driver. Tethering functionality included would be nice but is not a deal breaker. Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thanks.
Have you looked at the Paranoid Android ROM? It's nice, and a suitable daily driver for me. Video camera works if you apply the fix from altered in his thread. But I don't think tethering is working at the moment.

I actually just saw that today but I also noticed it was in Alpha still so I wasn't sure if it was stable enough to use as a daily driver but I read plenty of positive feedback. I have PA-Grouper 2.56 on my Nexus 7 and absolutely love it so this might be the best option. Any noticeable bugs in your experiences with the Atrix version? Also, thank you very much for the fast reply.

I am trying to pick a rom too for my Atrix2 (ATT US). I am still stock on ginger bread.
Questions:
1. Looks like NUMA ROM is the best so far? It's based on the final ICS release from ATT, that mean less bugs I suppose?
2. This rom is in Beta? does this mean it will go official soon?
3. After flashing to NUMA Rom, can I go back to gingerbread if I want to? or will there be limitations?

If you want to be able to go back to GB from ICS, you have to be on Jim's ICS leak 1. Do not update to official ota if you wish to have the option to return to GB.
Numa is a very good ROM. Read through the thread to find any possible bugs that others may have found, though i know the list is short.
Note: I repeat.. If you get Jim's ICS leak 1, do not update it to leak2/OTA, as you will no longer be able to revert back to GB.

Yes you'll have to be on leak 1 before going to numa. Also you'll need to fxz to a clean stock 2.3.6 before trying to put the leak on your phone. Don't set up any accounts once on clean 2.3.6. If you follow Jim's post you'll be just fine

So I finally got around to flashing the PA ROM today. Its easily one of, if not the best ROM I have used on this phone, especially for being in alpha. I actually didn't encounter some of the known bugs listed such as black lockscreen, rotation issue, or bootloop at motorola logo. One issue in particular I did not see previously mentioned on the dev forum was LTE not working. The first thing I looked at was the APN settings and tried setting each one that came preinstalled with the ROM but I was not able to get LTE. Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix? Also no third party flashlight apps work from what I tried. I can confirm tether is not working as well. I'm looking forward to more good news about this ROM than Christmas

AT&T somewhat misleadingly calls their 14/21 Mbit HSPA+ "4g".
