I recently flashed a new rom (the last time I did this was almost 2 years ago so I forgot what to do). Titanium backup has been doing weekly updates for a long time. So when I started up the phone titanium backup is gone, I read that I must redownload from the play store, but when I run it, it says I failed to acquire root privileges. It tells me to get busy box, so I download that too, but that won't install properly.
What should I do now? Have I lost root? The bootloader is available...that means it's still rooted right? The internal sd card still shows my folder of titanium backup and all the other root folders I used to have on my phone, I just can't get titanium backup to run so i can't restore.
Thanks!

If you flash a new rom root is lost.
You have to root again.
S.R.
A few of the JB ROMS were causing issues with root. The fix was to re-flash the SU (superuser) apk and that would fix things right up. You should be able to find it doing a search.
Good luck and hope this helps!

Lets start with a few basic questions... dont mean to offend you, just wanna make sure its not something you may have overlooked.
What rom did you flash?
What, if anything, did you wioe in recovery?
Did you get a superuser or supersu prompt when titanium started?

Not necessarily so. Most custom roms are pre-rooted by the dev. Ive flashed countless roms and until recently w/ jb not had any issues w/ root access.

seems you've just lost root privileges,
just flash supeuser again and you will be fine...

it pretty much looks like this in TitBack, give or take a few letters: "[SMS/MMS/APN] Phone/Messaging...". when you tap on it, the pop-up recognizes it as "Phone/Messaging Storage". this is where your text messages are.
some 3rd-party MMS apps like GoSMS Pro can back up your messages too, and I believe there's also an app or two solely for backing up your messages to your sdcard/internal storage.
Titanium Batch restore fail
Hi all
Having a few problems, I'm new to flashing roms and the use of Titanium Backup and I've just flashed my second ROM. I've gone from CM9 to CM10. Before doing so I created a backup of apps + data.
I flashed the ROM fine, and ran the batch restore function in Titanium. I have all the icons on my homescreen from the previously installed apps but after clicking on them my phone tells me that app isn't installed. I then notice that my notification from Titanium's batch restore shows the apps I had downloaded from the play store failed to restore (the notification said that the elements failed after batch restore was complete).
I noticed that these apps have a line through them when the list of apps I want to restore appears.
Titanium then advised me that the apps did not restore as the Android ID had changed, So I then reverted to the previous android ID thinking this to be the solution. However, after running the restore function again, the same amount of elements failed to restore.
Due to my lack of knowledge in Titanium and my need for these apps, I turned to the play store and decided to manually redownload all the apps again. This does not work either! The error message I get is the apps cannot be downloaded due to an error (491). I guess this is to do with the android ID changing?
Please help, how can I get these apps to restore? and also how can I be able to download apps from the play store again? :crying:
EDIT: So I was able to reinstall the apps from the play store by wiping the dalvik + cache.
This still leaves me baffled as to why Titanium wasn't able to do this

Did you try to restore system apps? I always use tb w/ the pro key to restore user apps + data, and have been getting the changed android id lately, but whether I keep the new id or revert to the old one, my restore works. Depending on what ROM I'm going to or from, sometimes I have to change my home screen shortcuts for system apps.

I didn't select restore system apps, instead I selected restore all apps with data, failing that I tried restore missing apps + all system data.
What option should I normally be selecting to do a straight restore after flashing a ROM? Does the fact that there is a line through the apps that I'm trying to restore mean anything?
I always select "restore missing apps + data" it's the 1st option under restore in the batch menu. The apps with a line through them are the ones that tb recognizes as being backed up but not installed.

[Guide]
Backup Apps & Their Data for Rooted & Non-Rooted Devices
Purpose: Let's say that you made a high score in subway surfers and you don't want to lose it, then you'll need these two apps to backup the game data.
Helium (Without Root Method):
Helium is an application by Koushik Dutta, who has also developed CWM Recovery.
Important Note:
Motorola devices are not supported due to a bug on Motorola’s part.
Requirements:
1. Rooted or unrooted device with android 4.0 or higher.
2. Computer and USB cable.
3. Helium on your android with Helium desktop app on your computer.
4. If you're using Windows, you've to install ADB drivers, but if you’re using Linux or MAC OS X don’t worry about this issue.
Helium - App Sync and Backup (Play Store link)
ADB Drivers and Helium desktop app
Instructions:
1. Run Helium desktop app and Helium on your device, then connect via USB cable. Wait just a few seconds, and Helium will be enabled. You can now disconnect your device.
Note :If you reboot your device you'll have to reconnect it to re-enable the app.
2. Now to backup, you must select the desired apps and games then click backup. You can select one by one or swipe up the bottom tab to select all. You can backup the app data only to make the backup less size but you must to redownload when restoring or you can back up data with apk (this is pretty helpful but with more size).
3. You can restore on your current device or on a new device using the same sdcard. I think you can also copy /sdcard/Carbon folder from the current sdcard to the new sdcard to restore.
- You can make schedule backups
- If you run to the premium version, you’ll be able to backup and restore from cloud storage.
Titanium Backup (Root Method) :
If you've a rooted device, you can benefit from Titanium Backup automation and flexibility without caring to android version. This app is more featured and works without connecting to computer.
Requirements:
1. Rooted device.
2. Titanium Backup on your android.
Titanium Backup ★ root (Play Store Link)
Instructions:
1. Start Titanium Backup and grant root permissions.
2. You'll see 3 tabs. Enter backup/restore page. You can now see a list of system, uninstalled and user apps which can be filtered.
3. Here you can manually select which apps to backup and restore.
4. Let’s say you want to run a full backup. Select the button on the top right of the screen (batch button) and you'll see many actions. Run “Backup all user apps” action. You can select what do you want to backup or select all. After figuring, tap the green checkmark.
5. For making a full restore, you can enter the batch actions and run “Restore all apps with data" action. The free version will make you press a yes dialog box for each app you want to restore, but the premium version does it all behind the scenes.
Important Notes:
1. Restoring system data can cause serious problems.
2. Restoring system data from one device to another will definitely cause problems.
- You can make schedule backups
- If you run to the premium version, you’ll be able to backup and restore from cloud storage.

Super Backup makes backup for sms & contacts, where Titanum Backup and Helium makes backup for apps and their data (like a saved game in Angry Birds).

OK, you're right, but it requires root. Non-rooted devices need Helium to backup app's data.

I had the same problem. It was related to having the Use as Media Device setting checked in the options. Once I unselected it the DLL files downloaded and installed. I don't know why but give it a try and see if that helps.

Very good alternative to Titanium, I usually use Titanium along with a Dropbox account, but this can more, great stuff.
Helium and MDM
While Helium was a fabulous tool for backing up from one tablet and restoring to another, I've encountered an odd problem. The original tablet was rooted, but I used Helium in non-rooted status. Then I restored to a non-rooted tablet. Thereafter, I installed AirWatch MDM only to be told by AW that the new tablet is rooted. I've confirmed through various means that the new tablet is not rooted. However, I suspect Helium does something that trips a flag. Does anyone have any idea on how to clear the flag so that my unrooted tablet will look unrooted to AW?

Helium works with rooted and unrooted Android devices but needs 4.0+. I think it won't work with ginger bread even if you have root. I hope that I helped

Are there any apps that allow you to backup to your desktop? I want to be able to individual backups of the apps I currently have installed, delete the ones I don't use(I need the free space), with the much faster option of just sideloading them instead of having to redownload them from the play store. I don't have enough space on my tablet or phone to make Titanium or Helium backups. Thanks for any recommendations and help.
Edit: NVM found one
Insufficient permissions
When I tried running the shell script on Linux Mint 16 64-bit Petra, it just said
Code:
error: insufficient permissions for device
First I had a problem that the script required changing permissions of the script and adb, but that was not a big of an issue. This however, I don't know what to do with this. USB-debugging was enabled and device was connected.
Edit:
I got this working. I configured the USB-access in udev as per instructions of source(dot)android(dot)com/source/initializing.html#configuring-usb-access. Then I modified it's permissions to read-and-write
Code:
sudo chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
and then I also restarted udev by
Code:
sudo service udev restart
That did the trick and I managed to connect the device.
Problem on Windows 8.1 64 bit
Hi Guys, I've just upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 64 bit, and each time I tried to connect my phone the OS haven't recognized the device. I looked at the device manager and I discovered a generic Android driver provided by Helium.
So I unistalled Helium, restored the USB drivers by Samsung Kies, and now the OS recognized my phone again.
WHy?
Thank you!

Very often, I reset my data on the S3 for try new ROMs, and, every time, I have to re-download all the applications...
Can I backup last version of Helium APP (APK?), so I can install it after the first boot and restore applications?
Hello XDA devs, this is my first time making a thread here. To keep it simple, I have an Nvidia Shield Tablet rooted on OTA 3.1 and I have just filled the recall to get a new one. I use Busybox, GLtools and FolderMount. So I have lots of things made on this tablet, my bootloader is open as well. I would like to know how I could backup this tablet so that I can make the new one just like this one without passing too much trouble. The fact that this one will be dissabled when I use the new one is also one of the problems that must not be overlooked.
Nandroid backup from recovery and copy the backup to a SD card and restore it on the new device.
Nandroid might mess up serial numbers if the backup from the original device carries over that information.?
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet using XDA Free mobile app
I was thinking something along the lines of backing up my app and user data with Titanium Backup, moving it to my sd card and then unlocking the booloader on the new tablet, rooting it and doing a restore with Titanium backup, with that backup I made on the old device. Would that work? Or would the nandroid backup work and be more effective?
What kind of serial number? If so, it would be somewhere in the hardware and a nandroid is just backing your data...
I believe Titanium requires root, so you've got a cart and horse problem. I think you can fastboot boot twrp-recovery.img and make a nandroid backup without unlocking bootloader though. Never tried fastboot boot on the shield though.

I would be interested in a step-by-step for unrooted stock Android 5.01 backup. I'm familiar enough with rooting / TWRP / flashing etc., but haven't done it on this device. Looking for easiest option. Since it's less than a month old I may just back up basic files manually and then wipe it, but if there's an easier way without going through trouble of rooting I'd be good to try it out. I've got the LTE version, by the way.
I have read that some people claim it to be possible to use a Nandroid backup for a same model phone or tablet, by following some procedures, while there are others who claim that it should not be possible.
I'm going to go the Titanium route just to be careful, as for the fastboot commands from pc, etc., I have done that before so opening the bootloader on the new device and re-rooting is not a big deal for me. I am more worried about whether FolderMount will work without problem on the new tablet when I restore with Titanium or not. I won't be making changes in my sd card, so I hope once I recover, Foldermount works and recognizes the links I've made.

When you restore your files on your new device, Titanium asks if you to restore your old ID to prevent problems with restored apps. So yes, foldermount and such will work correctly if you do that.

Do a nandroid backup in TWRP. I just did this exact same thing for my recall replacement! It works just fine. All you have to do is rename the backup folder, because TWRP saves the nandroid backup in a folder that is named what your Tablet serial number is. You have to rename the folder and change the name to your NEW Tablet serial number, otherwise the backup will not even show up in TWRP on the new Tablet. I assume this is done so that people that create backups of several different devices, onto an sdcard for example, can't accidentally restore an incompatible backup (say a nexus 6 backup on a nexus 5). I can assure you though it works just fine as long as both devices are the same.

I haven't received the recall tablet yet, so I still haven't had the chance to do the restore. I will be saving a backup for both methods though and try out a Nandroid restore first. Rooting hasn't affected any Nvidia app for me.

Used Googles non advertised ADB command line backup, Helium backup also uses ADB for a user friendly UI if your not command line savy.
Seems to have worked but will report back if the full APK + data has left glaring holes etc. Lastpass wasn't installed but thats a plus security wise.
I'm currently trying to root my J3 Luna Pro for the sole purpose of backing up app data for a discontinued app that still works with a saved login, however, all the root options I'm seeing require formatting your device. My last phone I was able to root just fine with Lambdaroot, and that didn't need formatting. While the older rooted does have what I'm trying to back up, of course the POS in now stuck in a bootloop, so getting the login file from the old phone isn't an option. Are there any ways to root a J3 without wiping it, or at least back up the appdata? (I tried Helium Backup, but it said that backup was disabled for that specific app)
I'm setting up a new Pixel 3 (Android 9), and moving from a Note 4 (Android 6.0.1).
When setting up, Google installs some, but not all, apps from the store. The missing apps I expected to restore from redundant Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro backups.
I have successfully installed Magisk 18.1 using the Boot Image Patch method (no TWRP)
Titanium Backup Pro reports it has superuser rights. When I try to restore an app created with the Note 4, Titanium Backup hangs forever on the "Restoring App+Data AppName n.n.nn.n" overlay with the spinning circle. TiBk is unresponsive, although Android is still running and I can see home screen or notifications. Restart is required to clear the pending action. I have run TiBk with USB debugging enabled (if that is still required), but get the same failure.
I also have MyBackup Pro. When I try to restore an apk (or apk+data), it appears to run normally. MBP reports it has superuser rights. At the end of the process the status summary says: Appname: failed: cp: can't create '/data/app/appnamestring-1/appnamestring.apk': Path does not exist.
I tried using MBP to back up an app already installed on the Pixel 3 from the store, and then restore it. It gives the same error, except the place where there is "appnamestring-1" in the Android 6 backup, there is now something like "appnamestring-2fjdk56akjfkdye7dkfja9=="
Also, I observe that the app that was installed prior to this backup restore experiment is no longer present afterward. I re-installed from the store.
Can anyone suggest next steps for solving this issue?

The only way that worked for me is getting my apps installed from GDrive backup (the from settings - > security - > backup or so). Actually this only restores apps from the play store.
Restore via ADB also didn't work for me...

Thank you for the reply! It was rather quiet around here...
But seriously, you can't restore apps? Why?? What is the issue? Why can't an app designed to backup and restore, running with superuser permissions, restore an app?

I found it also quite annoying! Trying to copy apps via cable seems to be only fetching a list of apps from the old phone and then re-installing them. No settings, no data. Also - obviously - only apps from play store! So unusable.
My advise - export, backup etc. all you can from your old phone for import or so.
In regards to Titanium - there's a wayto make it work. I had this once that it got stuck: in the settings there's an option to change the processing mode - see https://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb/titanium-backup-troubleshooting.html , number 29.
You will have to ACK every app to be stored but it should work.
Not sure what I did different to you but it worked for me (titanium). Maybe try restoring app only, then data only. I think I might have done a batch restore from a nandroid originally.
