My Experiences with the G2x - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hi folks,
I've spent most of the month since I got my G2x messing around with different combinations of roms and kernels for the best experience and I thought I'd try to share some of that with you, as well as some unanswered questions.
First off, I am no stranger to android and even custom roms in general. I flashed custom roms for my windows mobile phones (two of them), before I went to android with the G1. I used the Tmobile HTC HD2 for a while after that, flashed to Gingerbread and eventually ICS roms with full HW acceleration thanks to the hard work of developers.
I got my G2x off Craigslist for use on Wind Mobile. Immediately looked up guides for nvflash and cwm, upgrading to the latest baseband (march) and trying a variety of different roms. At one point, I must've tried every rom out there in the forum, but decided to stick with owain's domination ICS because of the constantly updated codebase. The latest ones (build 78 and 79 have been having some lag issues suspectedly due to the linaro improvements), but that shows how cutting edge it is.
With all of them except my current, latest setup (which I will explain), I had a number of glitches, namely:
1. Flickering of the screen brightness when turning screen on and flickering of the screen-on for a millisecond after turning it off (with and without CRT-off animation enabled)
2. I had a little glitch with the LED lights where when it timed out, instead of turning off, it brightened brighter for a bit before turning off completely.
I understand that ICS is highly experimental, and it is a testament to how good those developers are to even get it running with hacked HWA and no official nvidia support (hopefully, yet).
I HAVE managed to solve those both problems in a very peculiar way. I applaud EaglesBlood for the slick look of their website, designs, and AROMA installer, not to mention their very slick AOSP rom. Latest news is that they're even starting to merge JB source.
Right now I am running EaglesBlood; not the AOSP, but their decommissioned CM9-based ICS build 3. Their last released version with the latest version of the trinity kernel. It's missing many of the latest CM commits, CRT-off animation (without modifying framework-res.apk) and a few features I admit, but it's blazing fast and most importantly, none of the two glitches I listed above are happening.
I am curious if there is any opportunities for information exchange here. I tried trinity kernel on build 77 and 79 of owain's domination build, and I experienced the flicker bugs, but not the LED lights. Clearly, something in the build changes could be the reason. If that could be identified, and EB's CM ICS build could be updated to the latest codebase, we could all have ourselves a more stable, and updated build with no glitches.
I am excited for the next builds of both the EB AOSP and domination builds to see what they could bring in the meantime.
Just my two cents, keep up the great work folks!

The other end of the spectrum of experience
I have very little experience "managing" an Android phone. I'm no technophobe, as I have 25+ years experience developing hardware and C firmware for embedded Real Time systems (none using Android nor embedded Linux). But I have a wife, kids, grandkids, and music performance is my #1 hobby, so I can't make time to "play" with my phone. I've had two G2x for my wife and I, and the only thing I did was root and freeze bloatware. I stuck with Froyo because I needed Wifi calling, a2db and BT calling, and tethering. We also got the dreaded Screen Of Death (g2x locks up, gets hot, and drains your battery, requiring a battery pull), and random reboots. I recently moved our phones to LG V21y (rooted with bloatware freeze), and my wife now gives me the evil eye. We lost the wonderful camera LG put into Froyo, we still get SOD and reboots, plus now we get frequent lag. Example: now when I'm playing music over a2dp, if I get a text or anything, the music has a momentary pause. wtf.
So, since you (Timekeeper) are trying out many ROMs, I'm curious as to which one you stay with. If anyone else wants to suggest ROMs, I'm all ears. I've also searched for a ROM of the original G2x Froyo, but the only links I come up with are dead. I want/need the above features (Froyo LG camera, WiFi calling, a2dp + BT calling, and tethering or Hotspot, and (gasp) stability) - my wife would sacrifice WiFi calling and a2dp for stability. But since she is a technophobe and I am the IT Dept, I'd prefer to have us on the same ROM.
Thanks in advance to any and all that give input.
-Bob

I suggest cyanogenmod 7.2 stable, though if you're on the latest baseband you won't have blue tooth calling. If you downgrade to July 2011 you'll have all working features. If you want you can also use faux 050 kernel if it works better than the cyanogenmod kernel.

You could give this a shot:
http://www.mediafire.com/?5vsodk99a6k6y8y
found from here: http://forum.frandroid.com/topic/86314-rom-videotron-stock-22-froyo-p999/ (in french). It's of a stock froyo rom from the provider Videotron, if you are wanting to go back to Froyo. All my roms are ICS roms (I vastly prefer it over CM7.2 after trying some), and so might not be too suitable for you. One of the things you mentioned you missed was the original Froyo camera. As always before trying this rom, do a nandroid backup of your current.
You can also try this, it contains stock nandroid restores for stock froyo and gingerbread and the links appear to still be live:

I personally find best EB 2.3.7 Rom to work wonders paired with Faux50. I have my max set to 1408MHz and 389 MHz min with just -25mv undervolted all day and get no gliches no hiccups. Im on 6h 54m on battery and my percentage is at 66% not to shabby considering i watched an episode of Futurama during my lunch break on netflix.

[Q] TMob G2 w/Google + ROMs = shattered dreams

Ok, so I just got this phone on the 2nd and have been extensively looking around for stable ROMs. I've found two ROMs I particularly love, SuperVillain and SparkMods HotSauce, I also rather enjoyed GingerVillain. But all of these seem to have some serious drawbacks with the G2, or maybe just the T-Mobile network, I have no idea. But with SuperVillain, my bluetooth won't work correctly. GingerVillain breaks my WiFi (won't stay toggled on longer than five seconds), and I've yet to accomplish getting the android market app onto HotSauce. And across the board of all the nonstock ROMs, picture messaging absolutely will not work.
So my question is, is there a stable ROM with full support for this phone or do I have to be stuck running this beautiful device at 800mhz?

[Q] Best Rom For G2X?

What the best rom for our G2X with good performance and good battery life
How about reading? Have you tried that?
There is no 'best ROM.' That's like asking what's the best car or what's the best food, it all comes down to personal preference.
Really, you can't go wrong with any of them. I've found the best battery life to be with Tsugi 2.3.4 or Weapon G2x. MIUI and CM7 have a little faster drain, but it's not too noticeable, but you get tons of customization in exchange. In my experience with custom kernels, they all perform about the same, which is a good thing, they've all super fast.
Also, what Beekersguy said, this question gets asked literally every day.
Sent from my Tsugi G2x using XDA Premium App
Yeah, there are literally dozens of threads with the same title as yours. They all get answered the same, with the only difference being the addition of Tsugi.
Simple question gets a simple answer. CM7.
Yes, but there is very limited number of roms, most of the roms are about an month and a half old without any updates to them.

Quality over quantity.
I've only used Weapon G2X as of now and I like it a lot to be honest with you.
Everyones replies are true there is no real answer to that question.
Also, which version are you looking for...Froyo or GB
If its Froyo...go for Ultimate ROM,as for a GB rom i wouldn't know because i'm just waiting for ICS to come out and not deal with the constant GB updates but thats me. So for GB roms, other opinions should be taken into account.
The honest answer to this question is:
Whichever Rom works best for you...
That sounds like a cop-out but, follow me on this... The problem with the G2X was lousy support from LG from the beginning. That means that all of the Roms suffered various glitches. Froyo Roms (which I never experienced since I didn't have a G2X back then), Gingerbread Roms, both 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 all have had glitches. Cyanogen has never been 100% either, nor has MIUI...
What that means is, there's not a single Rom that can say "I have it ALL WORKING 100%". Such a best does not exist on the G2X, despite any claims to the contrary.
Even Tsugi has a number of issues. Some are due to my lack of ability, but others come down to buggy LG code. Without source code, we merely try to hack and patch to get things working better.
Cyanogen of course has source code, but has little information regarding internal workings, and unfortunately no dedicated developers working ONLY on the G2X.
So, in the end, you decide WHICH rom offers you the best features with glitches you can live with.
In general:
LG 2.3.3 Roms: Seem to have more Screens of Death & Random Reboots, but some people have bluetooth issues.
LG 2.3.4 Roms: Seem to have a little better battery life and stability overall, but there seem to be some USB issues for a few users, and some have bluetooth issues.
CM7 Roms: Battery life isn't as good, GPS isn't quite as reliable (not that it's 100% on LG roms either)
MIUI Roms: All the issues of Cyanogen + most people cannot get Wifi Calling to work.

As one of those users with USB issues I presume you are referring to, I just wanted to clarify -- it's really an issue with unmounting the SD card (which happens when you set it up for USB access), not limited to USB access. Just going into Settings and unmounting the card directly usually reboots the phone, just like attempting to set it up for USB access.
I have tried CM7 and MIUI 1.18 and both are having problem with black screen and rebooting....
I'm using Tsugi Rom and so far I love it. I do however prefer the other camera, BUT its better to have this camera working than none at all
Great phone I think.
Im on MIUI and have camera problem too. Like it takes a few times to open up the camera or its just black screen...
Kang_clam
I have been using Kang Clam ROM for a few weeks now and its awesome. Its based on 2.3.7 and works great. Very well designed and very good battery usage.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374011
It does mostly depend on what you want in a rom. Cm7 is the most popular and known for its theming capability. Miui is known for looking a lot like ios. Most of the others are based off stock.
I personally use Whitehawkz's weapon g2x rom, since it comes with a stock launcher and a touchwiz launcher that is quite nice.
Though it IS up to you.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I like weapon, though I can't say I've tried a whole bunch to compare.
I've used CyanogenMod since CM4 and CM7 was the first ROM I loaded on my G2x. A while back I loaded Weapon as a change of pace and haven't looked back.
Weapon G2x works fine so far
I've been using weapon 3.0 R1 for a few weeks now and it has yet to do the random freeze or reboot the stock ROM does sometimes. I haven't had to pull the battery out once! Sometimes the stock ROM would freeze so bad I'd have to pull the battery. Anyone else's G2x do this with the stock ROM?
I'm also getting pretty good battery life from weapon even with Wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on all day long.
It says I've been on the battery for 9h 15m 34s and it's at 69% right now.
Battery use says
Cell standby 24%
Wifi 24%
Bluetooth 24%
Phone idle 22%
I do use the TMobile Wifi calling feature because my tower coverage at my house is poor. And since I work at home and I'm here all day I just leave the Wifi calling on and just use that for (not always)perfect calls.
Ive tried a bunch of roms. For me right now its Bionix 1.2.1. A 2.3.3 rom. Kinda reminds me of my old vibe in a way. Anywayz this rom is boss for me. Semi transparent parts a few themes, options for downloads, its fast on wifi 2 3 4g. Smooth no hiccups or lags no reboots or freezing
Transitions r fast n ram management hasn't Been a problem for me. Did I mention its TEAM WHISKEY?!

[Q] Most stable Gingerbread ROM

Hi i was wondering what the most stable gingerbread rom is right now for the G2x? I was using eagleblood's ics rom but I want to be able to use camera, browser and internal storage for music (I dont have an external sd card right now). but yeah tahts my question. I heard the one from lg/tmobile isnt the best
Stock or custom? Cm7 I feel is the best, but some might disagree.

My wife has EaglesBlood GB on her phone, and she says it's really stable for her. On occasion, it freezes up on AC power, but other than that, it works really well.
And, like mt3g said, CM7 also works really well. Although others complain that it's buggy for them, but that's just the nature of these phones: what works for one phone, doesn't work well for another. Trial and error is your strange bedfellow.

EaglesBlood ICS has only restarted once over my 4 day usage and that was cause i was doing some stupid stuff with the settings. I just want something that doesnt drain my battery as much as stock and fixed glitches and everything... the notification sliding in ICS i heard that some GB roms have it.. which do? Ya but you have to use the new baseband zip file owain created. Its in the op oh his thread.

If you want something easy to customize, I recommend Hellfire Phoenix over EaglesBlood because its based on the newest CM7 source, which includes a lot of fixes and more tweaks.
Now if you want a stock look (along with that better stock battery life), I recommend Bionix Reloaded v1.4.1 because its heavily tweaked for better battery life, and gives you all the stock Tmo apps like Wifi Calling, DLNA Sharing, etc.
The kernel is important too, and I always used Faux's kernel without any problems. In fact, using Faux helped solve some, as people running other kernels weren't able to play games such as Draw Something.
Sent from someone's Galaxy Nexus running AOKP + Franco
I like CM7, but have been running Hell Fire Phoenix for a LONG time, and love it.
Specific reqs
My wife is a medical professional and is sometimes "on call". I bought our phones a year ago, and didn't switch from stock 2.2.2, because no ROM/kernel (if I'm using those terms correctly) seem to be able to fix the Black Screen Of Death. So now I wonder the same - which ROM and or kernel is the most stable? She loves the stock LG camera, doesn't use BT nor WiFi calling - she NEEDS STABILITY!!! I know I can search thru the dev forum, but there are many posts, some by zealots. I'm looking for opinions from people who have tried many. It could be that the new LG V21Y will be good for her....
She doesn't need to customize - she just wants a phone that is working every time she pulls it out of her purse.
I vote for LG's stock 2.3.4 with new baseband.
My wife has not rebooted her G2x since updating to the new V21y/2.3.4. It's been at least a month for her w/o ANY complaints. She used to ***** at least daily about needing to pull the battery or reboot. Call quality is much improved, but what really impresses me is the speed and accuracy of the GPS now (not sure how much that matters for your wife). Battery seems to be at least as good as when I run the latest CM Nightly with Morfic's Trinity ELP kernel underclocked.
I too keep a nandroid backup of the new stock rom on my G2x. I find it the most stable of anything I've tried. Recently I've been on Hellfire Phoenix w/ either Morfic's ELP or Faux's 50b6 kernel. I've also been through all the recent Cyanogenmod releases lately.
Benefits of the stock ROM...
-No black screens of death
-Great battery life
-Clear in-call sound
-Quick GPS locks
-Minimal force closes
Compared to CM-based ROM's I mostly miss the brightness controlled by sliding across the status bar, the status bar toggles, the CM themes, and the "render effect" that allows me to pick the hue of the screen. I like to run the red one (least bright) when I just can't stop using the phone at night.
I am beginning to play with the rooted 2.3.4 (Thanks kwes1020) in hopes of regaining some of that custom functionality that I miss from the CM-based builds...
Appreciative lurker, first time poster
This thread looks like the best one to get my questions answered. TIA.
Brand new G2X (got the $30 T-mobile Walmart plan), running 2.3.4 on the March 2012 BB, kernel 2.6.32.9 (if that matters)
Basically I'm looking for something stable, though I am interested in customization.
Features that are important to me:
Battery Life, speed, GPS, WiFi Calling, Bluetooth streaming (but dont care about Bluetooth calling), fast camera
Based on all my reading in these forums, I think I should be looking for a GingerBread ROM that allows some neat customization. CM7 7.2 Stable seems to be the most recommended right now. Is that right?
Also, though I have a couple years experience with Android, this will be the first time I root a phone and install a custom ROM. I was planning to use the video tutorials at theunlockr.com to start the process. Having watched all those, it looks like there are 3 steps:
1. Root: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2x/
2. Flash Custom Recovery Image: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-flash-a-custom-recovery-image-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
3. Load Custom ROM: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
However, I saw in another thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761772&page=2 ) that "There is no need to root your stock Rom if you are using NVFlash to flash CWM."
So, is this a newer method or the same thing that unlockr.com is instructing me to do?
I know that's alot, but thanks for any advice...

Well, I rooted my phone for the first time about 3 months ago and I used the unlockr method. As long as you follow step by step instructions everything should go smoothly, I screwed it up and had to reload stock rom, but that just made me understand the process better.
As for which ROM to get, I tried various ones Eaglesblood, Hellfire both ICS and GB and I found that the one I liked the best was Hellfire CM7.2 supertweaked. I couldn't do ICS because I actually want to watch videos on my phone and it was too laggy. However, Hellfire ran smoothly and the battery life is amazing compared to stock. I have had this phone on mostly standby for a whole day and it was still on 60% battery life. There are no problems with wifi and camera is good. I am not sure about bluetooth since i don't use it, but the news is that there will soon be fixes to any bluetooth issues.
An extra piece of advice, if you are going to root your phone and I recommend you get the Auto Memory Manager and FasterGPS app. The former is better than app killer, which are bad for your device and the second will immensely increase GPS lock on time.

Looking for the most stable up to date rom

I've been playing around with my friend's Infuse after fixing the power button/boot loop issue. I did flash it to CM11, though it did run beautifully, found there were issues with the video recorder (choppy). I brute forced it back (an epic battle with the AT&T logo loop) to rooted GB stock with Zen's Synthesis kernal and CWM.
I'm looking for the most stable rom that doesn't have camera issues. From what I was reading that it is hit or miss from ICS and up. Should I just leave it as is? I'm thinking about flashing a GB rom like Aeon or Revenant. The biggest complaint with this phone was battery drain, so I got all of the bloat off with Titanium.
I'm asking because my friend needs a daily driver with no problems--she doesn't know how to fix things if something arises.

I found CarbonROM to be less buggy than Beanstalk 4.4.2 or CM 10.1, but then again, I didn't extensively run/test it like the others, including the camcorder. I did hear that you cannot do HD recording with it. If that is a problem, should stick with stock Gingerbread.
Lollipop may change things, but Eclipse does use Froyo as a baseline for software requirements by default. It may be GB now, but even then you would be safe for a year until Android 5.1 comes out (Gingerdeath won't happen overnight).
Thanks!
I'm more apt to stick as close to stock as possible on other people's devices because we all know strange things can and do happen. But I just couldn't help myself trying to update it as far as possible. I'll see how she feels about the HD recording and take it from there.

User Experience: the most stable Rom for AT&T G3

Hello ,
I am tired of changing roms and experiencing new bugs while the developers has already left the thread and the Rom is already abandoned --> "trying" the newer roms that are going to be abandoned soon again and again and again for getting to the mirage land of stability. AT&T D850 users, PLEASE introduce me to the most stable rom that you are using for months with the "least" random reboots, overheating, boot loops, bluetooth bugs, wifi password resets, compass calibration problems (if it is not the LG built-in gift), etc.
I will really appreciate you sharing your experience with me.
All the Best,
i try Candysix v1.0 he is nice rom
I'm running CM12.1 (Unofficial) with nightlies and TWRP 3.0 and I've had it for about a week now.
I use this phone for my business, so I MUST have it be reliable. So far I've been ecstatic with the performance and stability.
Everything runs smoother, faster, and the phone feels like it's brand new. I also hated most of the LG apps and feel that Google's apps are simply better all the way around.
I even like the CM camera app over the stock LG camera (even though I lost the laser focus... which I never thought worked that well).
This is by far the best experience I've ever had with a phone. This is my first Android phone after owning several iPhones. It took some time to get used to the customizability of an Android phone over an iPhone. CM12.1 is customization on steroids. EVERYTHING is changeable.
The ONLY thing I've encountered is this...
Sometimes (only about 2% of the time) a call only rings once and then immediately go to VM. The caller reports hearing the phone ring over 4 times before the VM picks up. I haven't figured out what is doing this... But I'm working on it.
HTH
CM13 unofficial. I've only been using it for a few days, but it far surpasses any other ROM I've tried, especially stock. It doesn't have problems with the SD card like that stock junk does.
Hell Yeah Fulmics
Flumics 2.7 is the most stable Rom for G3...
