I've never received a message like that. I signed my agreement and still have unlimited data. Hmm....
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

Um, yeah right. Mine gets delivered tomorrow, and either I'll be rocking unlimited like it said in my renewed contract or I'll be rocking a phone on another carrier.

I got something similar
I received a similar notice with one of my pre-orders placed on 6/12. The email from Verizon stated "We have completed your equipment order. Your current Unlimited Data package is no longer available. We have selected the 2 GB Data package for you. You will not be able to go back to your current Unlimited Data Package"
Called them and the rep had to submit a "inactive price request" form. Hopefully I hear back from them soon.

Xda server would meltdown over the posts here if others were getting that message. I love how BGR just runs the story without checking with Verizon or getting another person to confirm. Just uses 1 persons tip as fact.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda app-developers app

Mine will be here tomorrow too and I even have a rep calling me to make sure I have no issues with my current unlimited data plan.
If I lose unlimited...all hell will indeed break loose.
Most important thing to realize is people have most likely received this notification if they ordered after 6/28/12.

I got mine today... I still have unlimited.
I mean, I even logged into My Verizon and it shows unlimited. No idea what the deal is here. I pre-ordered mine in store and the reps confirmed with me that I would keep my unlimited data.
This "news" story seems hokey.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

Sure Verizon might take away your unlimited data but it's not like they didnt compensate you for it... they gave you a locked boot loader for [email protected]!!

BGR = Bull**** Generated Regularly
I kept my unlimited data, so I'm sure others are too.

Response from VZW when I asked.
I just asked them via the chat on their site, I was told that I get to keep unlimited, but only because I purchased it unsubsidized. Seeing how I use 10gb or so a month, I guess I'll keep buying them unsubsidized since it saves a huge amount of money per month to do so.
Doesn't look good for guys signing a new contract, though.
Please wait for a Chat Representative to respond.
Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless. My name is Gary, how may I assist you?
Gary: Hi Nicholas
Nicholas: Hello, I just purchased a Galaxy S3 (scheduled to be delivered on the 11th). It is unsibsidized, so I paid $650 so I could keep my unlimited data.
Gary: no problem
Nicholas: I'm readin gthat customers are getting notices that they are losing their unlimited data when activating their S3s, will I be forced off my unlimited plan?
Nicholas: Or do I get to keep it, which is the whole reason for ordering the phone at full price.
Gary: no if you had used the subsidized price, then yes, otherwise the unlimited data plan is still yours...
Nicholas: Excellent. Thank you for your help tonight.

Has anyone who signed a new 2 year contract activated yet? Results?

i preordered on 6/6, renewed a 2yr contract, recieved my phone today, and kept unlimited data

When I pre-ordered my GS3 the customer service rep told me I would still be able to keep my unlimited data plan however if any bills are paid late or if the credit card wont go through on the order or if they have any other problems with my account prior to shipment of the phone, then the phone order will be canceled and I may not be able to keep the unlimited data. My gut tells me the person in the article had a billing issue and Verizon used that as an opportunity to yank the unlimited data.

E36eury is correct.

Same here

This is totally false. They reposted a blog from BGR, which I commented on (VERY FIRST COMMENT), explaining that it was false. Pathetic when this kind of crap becomes "news"

so we can get an erroneous story of verizon sucking on yahoo news but not an actual story about how they locked the bootloader? o_0

When I ordered mine i asked for a written receipt stating that my unlimited would still be there....big red is getting a bit too big for their britches

I only pay $9.95 per month for unlimited for each of my five lines. I think I'll stick with that plan.
on a side note, when I called Verizon about upgrading my phone, they insisted on doing it over the phone & stated that for exsisting customers you have to do it that way. however, I called a local Verizon store yesterday and they said I can just go into the store and do it.
uh oh... different people telling me different things. shame on you Verizon!

Unless the sales person over the phone is offering you something special or exclusive, there is no reason why you can't go into any Verzion Wireless dealer and do an upgrade.
Back on topic, just upgraded my data. 6GB with Mobile Email/Hotspot for $25. Awesome.

OP says once you get it, you get it for the contract but if you can't find a definitive response, who knows.
In all the promo material Verizon it states that you will keep it until you opt into something, no longer how long you keep it. However if you switch to a 3G phone you will lose it, and will be unable to get it back.
Verizon has confirmed that this will be grandfathered once you get it.

Yeah I was looking the other day at phones and just had to ask also. No go for the unlimited on new phone unless you pay full price.
But I knew the answer before I even went in.
I actually went to Verizon yesterday and talked to a guy about the plans.
Yes, Verizon will no longer have unlimited data available to anyone... no matter if you're "grandfathered" in.
However, check your monthly data usage... you might be surprised at how little of data you actually do use each month.
Turns out that when it comes time for me to change my plan, I'll be saving more money from month to month.
This does vary from person to person, though. It's definitely worth looking at.
You can also keep your unlimited data by not renewing your contract and buying a phone from offline somewhere or at full price from Verizon. Just call Verizon and tell them you need to make an ESN swap to active your new phone.

They won't get rid of it if you currently have the unlimited data plan unless you renew or sign a contract. Unlimited data is no longer an option with the service plan.
As long as you keep the Verizon service and do not sign into another contract, unlimited data will be with you.
If you want to upgrade to another phone, you'll have to buy it off of the internet from someone or walk into Verizon and pay full price for the phone only... without starting a new contract or plan.
This is the only way you can avoid losing unlimited data.

You will not be able to change from one phone to another online anymore either.
If you do, it will tell you that changing to this device requires a change to your plan.
If you want to change from the Thunderbolt to... let's say a Galaxy S3, you'll have to call Verizon and talk to a customer service rep. and they will have to change it for you. Just tell them you need to make an ESN swap from the Thunderbolt to the Galaxy S3 and they will have no problem what so ever in changing it over for you without making any changes to your "plan"... even if you don't technically have one and they will not force you into a contract either. *At least not yet* and let's hope it stays that way.
Verizon will not turn down paying customers.

Ordered it the day before the cutoff date. Dont remember exactly at the moment but know for sure it was one day before, think 27th of june. Now they are saying the rep i called to order was probably wrong and that because mine was preordered it didnt count because it was activated in the 9. I told her ppl on forums preordered theirs and got unlimited still and she said those ppl on forums lied. Payed last months bill without noticing mine said 2 gb data cuz it was same price. People on the forums didn't seem to "lie" - many were sharing stories on what worked/what didn't work to keep unlimited during the preorder wait for deliveries.
I kept my unlimited from preordering two phones for upgrading our lines, as an example.
But, we activated very soon after delivery months ago. Your preordered Galaxy S III arrived in early September?

Something isn't adding up. If you preordered the phone it should of shown you keeping unlimited data on your receipt. If it does then take it to Verizon. You renewed your contract under the premises of retaining unlimited data. They cannot not honor what you signed a contract for if so it would be null n void and you are free to cancell at anytime without paying a etf. I did this one time when I was younger and Cingular raised the cost of txt messaging from 10 cents to 25 cents per message.

Chance to get out of your Sprint contract without ETF.

I searched but couldn't find a similar thread.
On my March bill in the Important Information section it says that they are changing the way they calculate taxes and surcharges on premium content:
Tax & Surcharge Base Changes Effective 4/1/13, Sprint will be changing tax systems for charges such as insurance & premium content. This update may cause an increase of taxes and/or surcharges on your bill for these products. For details of taxes & surcharges, visit sprint.com/taxesandfees.
There is a slickdeals post talking about it.
It hasn't shown up on my bill yet, but may on the next bill. The URL they refer you to hasn't been updated since November, so you can't determine if your rates are going up.
Taxes going up isn't a reason/way to cancel, but if they increase the premium service fees in any way then you can cancel without the ETF.
It's worth looking into if you want to drop Sprint for another provider (or just get out of contract to get a new phone).

Correct, which is why you could cancel your contract ETF free.
The question is, what is considered premium content. Is the $10 charge for more a smartphone considered premium?
Also, this may only be regional.I know people in California have been able to cancel already without the ETF.

The phone itself doesn't determine premium or not. Premium features may be items like damage protection, international calling, etc. It almost definitely has nothing to do with what phone you have. It's premium service features.
They don't charge an additional fee for LTE service. They do however charge a fee for Smartphone data service (since smartphones use more data than a traditional cell phone). That may be considered a premium service. If it is, then every Evo 4G LTE owner has an "out" on their contract.

Thanks for sharing. I've been looking for a way out of my contact. Sprint service here gets worse by the day. Most times I get about 10kb download on 3G. And that's when my data isn't disconnecting constantly.

If there is a way out of the contract then I'm definitely taking advantage of that and buying a new phone. HTC One or the Galaxy S4. Most likely the S4 since I'm getting sick of HTC. Good lookin' out. Hopefully this will work out.

Good luck to those who saw an increase. I won't find out on mine for a couple more days.

For those talking about the charge on the OG EVO, it wasn't a 4G charge. Ugh. I feel like I'm repeating myself because people don't pay attention and don't care to understand. The $10 charge that Sprint started with the first EVO is a $10 data surcharge for all smartphones because they CAN use more data than a dumb-phone. It has nothing to do with LTE or 4G. It was an excuse Sprint used to increase their data fees while still giving unlimited data.

As for the person mocking me regarding the .36 cent increase and switching to Verizon and paying more. Look, I didn't say you had to switch carriers, it just lets you out of your contract. So cancel and restart under a different name or something, you can get a new phone for the subsidized price. I myself am sick of the crappy service and promise of LTE in my area that never came (was supposed to be second half of last year). Even with my free AirRave, service still sucks.
I too get an employee discount, but I also get a discount with all the other carriers. The ONLY benefit I have with Sprint is the unlimited data. Verizon and AT&T would only cost me $5 more per month with better service, and 4GB of data (we haven't gone over 3GB in the last 4 years).
So, feel free to be an ass and mock me,I don't care. I'm trying to help those who DO want a new phone for $200 instead of $500, or who do want to jump carriers (and get a new phone). To those select few, your welcome and good luck!
I've been following the Slick Deals thread as well as this one also here on XDA. I've already tried calling to see if they know what my personal change will be and, of course, the rep had no idea (she actually didn't even know about the statement on the bill in the first place). My bill comes out on the 10th of each month so I have to wait until then to see the changes and start my full attack.
Just set your Rom to force roam, download a ton, then sprint will cancel it for you. I just put 6gb on mine in roaming fees sprint will have to pay

Does getting out of my contract mean losing my phone numbers?

Keeping Unlimited data - new issue

So today I tried to get the S4 via and upgrade and keep my unlimited data using the loophole method of transferring an upgrade from an unlimited line to a non smartphone line on the same account, then doing the alternative upgrade and transferring the new phone from the previously non smart phone line to the desired unlimited line. The Vzw reps said that this might work but I might lose my unlimited data. I have previously done this method before and successfully kept my unlimited data when I upgraded to the S3, but im not sure if this loophole still works. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this or know any info? Has anyone done this recently and lost unlimited data?
Somebody on here said if you call and ask before upgrading you can keep your unlimited. Probably depends if you ask the right person.

Eventually Verizon is going to get you one way or the other. JUst their way of extracting more coin.
Eventually after haggling for awhile, another guy that worked there said I would be able to do the alternative upgrade and keep unlimited data if I did a SIM card swap a few days after upgrading, does anyone know any more info on this?
P.S.
Not sure if this should be in Q&A instead since its not really a GS3 question, so sorry if this is in the wrong area.

I tried this same thing just a week ago and was told that I could not. I have been watching Craigslist for someone that has used their upgrade and does not like the phone. They tried to get me to migrate to the family share plan. No thanks! I have 3 with unlimited and 1 not.
My sister did this with an iphone last month, no problems here

Uh all you have to do is upgrade the line with non unlimited data then once that's done you just log back in to your Verizon account or tell vzw rep to put the old phone back to that line. Now you have a phone with no contract. Do a device swap with the line has unlimited data and voila its like you bought a phone at full price or from craigslist

This is what I was originally planning on doing, because I've done that before and it worked. The verizon rep said that verizon is cracking down on this loophole and that if I did this it would get tagged as suspicious account activity and Verizon would then take the unlimited data away on the line that I transfer the phone to. He also said I wouldn't be able to get it back even if I undid the upgrade and all account changes within the allotted 14 days. He said there was a 50/50 chance it would work. I think the guy was just trying to b.s. me though based on what I've read.

Same thing happened to my friend that upgraded last week. Verizon would not let him do the alternative upgrade so he lost his unlimited data. I have only heard of one person in the last month that was successful in having a Verizon employee do the alternative upgrade.

It should work fine and if VZW stops it, it's just greed (surprise, surprise). The act of getting a subsidized phone on your account is what kicks you off unlimited data. If someone else, already on a capped plan gets the upgrade and gives you that phone, it's not VZW's business (or shouldn't be) as long as that person is happy.
I was planning to get a GS3 off of Craigslist in order to keep unlimited data but my wife wouldn't take a "used" phone so I knew she'd get a subsidized phone and we'd be kicked off unlimited data anyway.... So I got my (new) GS3 for $30 from Amazon.
I added a line for my kid and got S3 but took the s3 the next day and put it on my unlimited line and gave him my phone....Also find my post of how I kept my unlimited for my wife after her upgrade. Sometimes like some say it might be just who u talk to at Verizon.

never know what you're going to get?:fingers-crossed:
My contract with Verizon is up in December I still want to keep my unlimited on my gs3.I'll tell them the truth I have been a loyal customer for over 10 years and if they don't let me keep my unlimited I'll go with someone else

I hear ya but loyalty doesn't mean much to verizon. They will take your unlimited away. There's a higher probability that they remove vz navigator than letting you keep your unlimited data.
