Stability and battery - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Lol I feel dumb asking this since I've been around here for awhile but I'm getting a new phone and my mom is gonna use mine. She said she wanted a rom that will give her the best stability battery life and the scrollable toggles in the drop down. I showed her vb already and she said she didn't really like the look so what would you guys recommend

Valhalla final it's stock
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app

If she's OK with unnamed theme I'd say use that. Otherwise barebones keeps stock look with equal stability, and just about equal performance.

Or flash again to stock if you want but I recomend to you barebone or valhalla final ( their stock but with more stability and performance)

I was using Valhalla Final from when I got the phone until yesterday.
Just wanted to try out ICS since I liked it on my Kindle Fire.
I tried a few others, no more than a day I was back to Valhalla Final.

I really wish people would understand to see how a rom preforms you need to use it for more than a couple hours. Hell even a couple of days. The first day will be spent with the user messing with it to figure out all the settings. Once you are back to normal and not looking for all the new features the battery will stabilize and start lasting longer.

You may have a valid point, but thelgow said nothing about battery life being the reason for going back to vahalla final. I try ROMs for only a couple hours at a time regularly. I switch back simply because I prefer the look and feel of what I was already using. Once I find one that looks and feels better to me, then I'll give it an extended run and see how it works in my situation.

I understand this. There have been so many posts from people that post this kind of thing that is not helpful, off-topic, and honestly is rude its getting frustrating. You can not get a real feel of how the roms perform in a couple hours. I guarantee you that. There might be a setting that you over looked in your initial scan of the features. Even tho people claim you dont have to give the rom break in time. You do have to give YOURSELF break in time on the rom. Battery life, setting for themes, tweaks like notification toggles, and other things are all dependent on the person using the phone. If you flash a rom install your most used apps and never look into cutomizing the phone phone you will probably get longer battery. But if you are looking for a theme for the theme engine and a launcher theme you will have less battery. Plus if you are swapping themes several times at some point you need to reboot the phone for certain things to change properly.
TL;DR? A couple hours tinkering with a rom is not long enough to make a decision. Plain and simple.

[Q] Best rom for efficiency?

Just got my mom this phone and i got the rooting bug, lol.
She's basically just using it for web browsing, text messaging, and taking pics.
What's the best rom out there for efficiency? I want to take off all the sprint bloat & get some better battery life.
Would also like a rom i can add themes to.
You may consider the combo in my signature.
Works well on me.
Very stable with no reboots.
It has the 4G version as well unless I'm mistaken.
My usage is similar to your mom, though.
No gaming at all.
As for theming, I don't know if this ROM can be themed or not as I just like the way it is.

Slim ICS has what ur looking for...
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Probably want to keep it stock and simple, if you are going to root and theme it it'll make it more frustrating. In fact, setting up for other people, I'll enable root for certain apps and then set it automatically deny.
I have the perfect combination for you:
Kang CM7: http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/gigglebread/?id=crespo
Google Apps: http://goo-inside.me/gapps
Stock Launcher: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11421338&postcount=3
CM7 themes:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.david1171.minimalbread
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.theme.sense
CM9 Nightly 20120310 is the best until now from ICS roms
Can we update this?
After so long, i was finally able to root. Well, not able..but i got lazy and didn't bother with it.
This one is super basic and I think the best for the Nexus S. Fast, stable, and great battery life, 1%/h during night with wifi on

Cool, thanks. Let me know what comes up. What seems to be a problem, what seems to be broken, how the GUI looks.
if anyone knows how to disable the power saver feature, so that your screen and keyboard don't get all dark once you hit 15 or 10% battery, and also so that you can still use your camera at 10% battery, I think it would be cool. not sure if this power saver annoys other people or not, lol, but there were ROMs for the Epic 4G that had this tweak, but I never found out how it was done.
Your skype version doesn't work properly. The advance features crash the app. Also just a sidenote the skype is for gingerbread not froyo so that's probably why

It's good for your first rom I've had a few androids now and for not being a heavy developer it is good. Same way you do it with stock - you have to open up the app drawer, hit the menu button, then select edit. You may need to switch the view type first - do that, and then you can drag things from the app drawer into the dock and vice versa.
Hey again -
To the few that do try this rom out - feel free to drop suggestions for other things to try and work in (beyond lockscreens of course). While I do have one known (and one unknown) surprise ready, I'd like to get a few more things worked into an update if at all possible. I can't say I'll be able to work in what is suggested, but I'll give it a shot at least
Having an updated tw launcher or a different launcher with the ability to have 5 or 6 apps in the dock would be all that I would ask for. Everything else is fantastic. Thanks for all your efforts.

Yeah I've thought about such things, but I always circle back to the idea that there are so many great 3rd party launchers out there I should let it be to encourage folks to explore those options lol. I also am leery on putting in a launcher that has a pay version or has the whole ask-for-permission hassle (that's not really a hassle), but I'll keep my eyes peeled for something different.
I am of course open to suggestions

Google Now should have been working - all the stuff from the referenced link was added for it anyway. How is it different now vs. when you first flashed the ROM? Could you get me a screenshot of what it looks like for you now? Perhaps I missed something...
LOL on the swag toggle - I meant to change how that behaved. The toggle is there for fun only, but to mess with people on the Gingerbread build I had it set to force download mode if you turned it on while auto-brightness is turned on - I forgot to change that, my bad
EDIT: Derp... I see what I forgot... Ok, it will be fixed in 2.1, sorry about that For those not wanting to go and flash anything, all you need to do is delete /system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk and then reboot and all will be well. My bad.

Yep - everything in that is already in the rom, I just forgot to remove an apk. D'oh.
First off - thanks to those that have offered some feedback on this, it is very much appreciated. That being said, I know not many have tried this out but I'm getting an update together, so I wanted to ask if anyone has noticed anything else not working quite as they expected or anything that should be changed/added/removed...?
I haven't come across anything I wanna do with the launcher yet, but I have cleaned up a few things in the toggles, Google Now is now working as it should, I fixed another little bug I found when you first turn on wifi after flashing... outside of that is there anything people have found that I should address before updating? No worries if not - like I said not many have tried this out, but I'd like to get all the little issues ironed out before updating if possible.

Help me choose a rom

Number 1 for me is stability. I am looking for a Rom that fully works or for the most part everything is working. Full camera functionality/flash, Sending and receiving SMS & MMS, GPS (I use navigation often), making and receiving calls, all the basic stuff that work on stock. Stability is my main objective. Second would be battery life & fluidity. Everything else like customization options is a nice bonus
I expected the Jelly Bean OTA to be better than it was. I did a factory reset when I got the update to make sure my phone started fresh. Even formatted internal and external SD card. I just expected a better experience. They took away some things I loved and added some things I don't like. But the main thing that bothers me is the occasional stutter/lag. And I notice battery life is worst on the JB OTA. I thought JB was suppose to be refined, it's not totally buttery smooth like they promote it to be. At least not on the stock Verizon variant of the GS3.
I am looking at "The Executioner" or the CleanRom/CleanRom Lite Edition. Any opinions or thoughts by people who have ran both would be appreciated!! I realize roms, as most things in life are a personal preference but I'd still like to get some opinions.
Another silly thread. We already have a few of these in the same section. Post there.

Thanks for the feed back!! Is there any common bugs people been experiencing with it? All the basic functions are working well? Again I appreciate the reply, I'm brand new to the S3 section of the site. This makes me excited to see what the rom is about. I forgot to ask, thing that bothers me most about the recent official JB OTA, I am required to have my GPS turned on to refresh my weather Widgets. Being connected to the net is not enough anymore m after the update, now I need GPS on for some reason? Is this the case for the Executioner Rom or no?

Who cares if there's other threads about the same thing? It's called a forum for a reason. Save your 2 cents for helpful advice.
Anyway I'm thinking of switching to executioner rom also. On synergy now.

Who cares that the mods hate it... Isnt this what the forum is for? To talk about the galaxy s3? At least its not in the wrong section

People spend hours putting together guides, doing reviews, etc. It's frustrating sometimes to see how little effort some people put into utilizing the forum.
It works both ways. These boards would be alot less cluttered if people searched. We're all guilty of it, I'm not preaching. Just know where he coming from.
For example there's a great guide in the android development forum that compares many different roms.

I just spent the whole month of December and part of January on Gingerbread
Because more stuff works.
Not a dig on the ICS and JB devs, just IMO seems with a GB kernel there's little reason to on a dd'er. When/if Aries gets going, that's a reason to try it.

Working Wifi calling. That's about the only real reason that doesn't boil down to bad data/app choices. But it is compelling.

Alright. Point taken tho i don't agree on battery life it seems quite acceptable to me. Boils down to what works for you. I have never had much use for WiFi calling tho.
Only thing I really want fixed for jb right now is GPS but I don't use it that much so its not high priority.

Personally I'm on ICS, but having GB with ICS looks seems a valid possibility.

I stick with gb due to the layout.
I prefer the bml over mtd for the touchwiz features....I like going to contacts and sliding to text/call,and so on.
I don't mind waiting patiently for this.
Although it may never happen due to what seems to be most people here don't care much for bml and what it offers...which is all good by me....i do flash everything that comes out and give it a great amount of trial before i end up going back to the gb bml.

I used to really like the 'go' apps only problem now is some of them use push ads. Maybe that one doesn't, but I had to dump my favorite launcher because of the ads.

I like the customization of slim bean not as much as aokp but more than cm10. If i could get ten hours of battery with use i would complain. In nor complaining now unless you count me cussing at the phone lol.

4.2.1 tiles set up in systemUI is awesome as well

Replace the G with J in GB.
LOL
I use FBs VB still. Of course, I like ICS and JB, but GB this ROM is just perfect for what I want. With ICS/JB I have battery issues and also weak wifi signal. So GB feels right. Anyway, there has been a lot of progress and I know it will continue.
The facts
on GB almost everything works perfectly from the box (only some launchers require ver 4 and above, including Apex, my favorite).
Obviously memory management is better on ICS and JB, but most novice users won't feel the difference.
Regarding the UI experience, I think it is much better on ICS and JB, but apps like this - ICS/JB task manager, ICS system style (and maybe a systemUI) can make the difference minimal.
I prefer the UI in ics than gb. It is much faster and more intuitive.
