[Q] Best rom for efficiency? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my mom this phone and i got the rooting bug, lol.
She's basically just using it for web browsing, text messaging, and taking pics.
What's the best rom out there for efficiency? I want to take off all the sprint bloat & get some better battery life.
Would also like a rom i can add themes to.

You may consider the combo in my signature.
Works well on me.
Very stable with no reboots.
It has the 4G version as well unless I'm mistaken.
My usage is similar to your mom, though.
No gaming at all.
As for theming, I don't know if this ROM can be themed or not as I just like the way it is.

Slim ICS has what ur looking for...
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G

Probably want to keep it stock and simple, if you are going to root and theme it it'll make it more frustrating. In fact, setting up for other people, I'll enable root for certain apps and then set it automatically deny.
I have the perfect combination for you:
Kang CM7: http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/gigglebread/?id=crespo
Google Apps: http://goo-inside.me/gapps
Stock Launcher: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11421338&postcount=3
CM7 themes:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonny.theme.icsgingerbread
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.david1171.minimalbread
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.theme.sense

CM9 Nightly 20120310 is the best until now from ICS roms

Can we update this?
After so long, i was finally able to root. Well, not able..but i got lazy and didn't bother with it.

This one is super basic and I think the best for the Nexus S. Fast, stable, and great battery life, 1%/h during night with wifi on

Update it to JB4.2.1 and that should do. If not, try AOKP for 4.1 I used it for months and it was quite good.

Why flash roms?

So I was just wondering why would we flash roms? I mean the current stock os is almost bug free + when flashing roms we are faced with some major bugs sometimes.
I know that we would have the choice to remove bloatware, cutomise status bar, and sometime oc. That's all nice but still I don't see why not leave it as is?
Please excuse my ignorance. I just came from a rooted Dinc w/ miui
And I wanna have a better understanding.
Thanks

For me it's the freedom to do with my phone what I want. These developers kick out some sweet features that we'll never see from a stock ROM, and they get us the latest software before the manufacturers. I bug here or there is well worth it for me, and if it's to bad you can always revert. If you prefer the stock experience, than by all means leave it alone. But me, I'm a tinkerer. Be it a car, truck, bike... or yes, even a phone, I can't leave well enough alone.
Because we can
To pick up chicks......I haven't met one yet that's not turned on by 48+ mflops!
Can't do that with stock.....
This might seem like an odd answer... I flash so I can have a standard interface on my phones. I've had a droid, droid x, and thunderbolt in the last year and a half (my company does some android development on in house apps for one of our clients, and we go through a lot of test phones). having something close to a stock interface minimizes the daily annoyances of moving between those phones.... which is why I use the aosp roms.

Wait, you came from a phone that you rooted and flashed MIUI on, but don't understand why others choose to not stay stock
Why??? that's not the correct question. The correct question is why not!

For me? Customization and battery life.
Number 1 reason on the Thunderbolt ... I prefer AOSP/CM7 over Sense.

To Mod or not to mod?

Hey guys I was wondering if I should install CM7? I have a stock rooted g2x with no problems.
Should I wait for LG to release Gingerbread?
Does Peggle or Plants vs Zombies work on CM7?
I am really excited about the future of my phone but don't know which way to go. Any help/opinions is appreciated.

I recommend you root the G2x at least once and see how that goes for you. 1 of 2 things will happen, you will either love it or dislike it. I personally keep my G2x stock because I find that it is more stable than rooted and also the camera app works way better than the custom roms. If you are gonna use CM7 then I recommend using a nightly instead of RC1. RC1 didn't seem that stable for me or try out Eagles Blood. Matter of fact try them all and see how you like it. Everyone has mixed feelings on whether to root or stay stock so you decide.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I do prefer stability over custom.
One thing that does bother me is the inability to put the battery percentage where the battery icon is like in CM7 and other roms.

Right now, stability does come from the custom roms.
Plus why torture yourself using stock? There are TONS of sweet features in CM7 that aren't in any stock rom I've ever seen. They literally make your phone experience SO much more enjoyable and easy that you will find running a stock rom is a pain.

I agree that there are many options and features not available in stock. Its one of the reasons I do want to.
I have a stable stock g2x. I have experienced no problems what so ever. No reboots. Lag. Etc which is one of the reasons I haven't.
I haven't decided yet...
Any more comments?

I finally bit the bullet and loaded up CM7. Coming from a stable stock g2x, I haven't seen much if any improvements. Maybe I'm missing something? Not too sure.
It was an easy process and I may go back to 2.2.2 if I get bored, but as of now, I'd say it's not life changing or anything.

Help me choose a rom

Number 1 for me is stability. I am looking for a Rom that fully works or for the most part everything is working. Full camera functionality/flash, Sending and receiving SMS & MMS, GPS (I use navigation often), making and receiving calls, all the basic stuff that work on stock. Stability is my main objective. Second would be battery life & fluidity. Everything else like customization options is a nice bonus
I expected the Jelly Bean OTA to be better than it was. I did a factory reset when I got the update to make sure my phone started fresh. Even formatted internal and external SD card. I just expected a better experience. They took away some things I loved and added some things I don't like. But the main thing that bothers me is the occasional stutter/lag. And I notice battery life is worst on the JB OTA. I thought JB was suppose to be refined, it's not totally buttery smooth like they promote it to be. At least not on the stock Verizon variant of the GS3.
I am looking at "The Executioner" or the CleanRom/CleanRom Lite Edition. Any opinions or thoughts by people who have ran both would be appreciated!! I realize roms, as most things in life are a personal preference but I'd still like to get some opinions.

Thanks for the feed back!! Is there any common bugs people been experiencing with it? All the basic functions are working well? Again I appreciate the reply, I'm brand new to the S3 section of the site. This makes me excited to see what the rom is about. I use the CM10 Nightlies. I update about once a week or so. And I have had very minimal issues. When I did run into any, I just updated the next day and the issue was fixed. And you can report bugs to the developers to help expedite the fixes as they come up. Not to mention no more touchwiz, *Gag*

I forgot to ask, thing that bothers me most about the recent official JB OTA, I am required to have my GPS turned on to refresh my weather Widgets. Being connected to the net is not enough anymore m after the update, now I need GPS on for some reason? Is this the case for the Executioner Rom or no?

People spend hours putting together guides, doing reviews, etc. It's frustrating sometimes to see how little effort some people put into utilizing the forum.
It works both ways. These boards would be alot less cluttered if people searched. We're all guilty of it, I'm not preaching. Just know where he coming from.
For example there's a great guide in the android development forum that compares many different roms.

Double that here. I used stock ICS for an absurd amount of time, finally got around to rooting it, and recently talked myself into giving CM10 a whirl.
Glad I did. So far the only complaint I really have is the profiles settings do not currently have a way to disable vibration if you turn the ringer off. This is a CM wide bug from what I read on the net. But hey, look at it this way, ICS doesn't even have profiles!
I'd be skeptical about battery life estimations though, invariably people use their phone more when they have a new rom...from tinkering with it all the time, or not trusting it so they check the phone more often. I'm not saying there are not differences, just saying they are usually slight in reality, and it's up for debate if they mean anything in the long run.
While you can use google now with ICS, it's an inferior version. Google now is a great reason to upgrade to a Jelly Bean rom if you ask me.
