[Q] What's the difference between 1.85 and 1.88 RUU? Why is 1.88 disappearing? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Scrosler based cleanrom 4.0 off the 1.85 ruu, whereas the previous one was 1.88. I also noticed the Att one x resource Page no longer has a link for the 1.88 RUU. What gives? Did we discover that 1.88 is subpar? I thought everyone agreed 1.85 was junk?

Scott decided to base Cleanrom on 1.85 because It's the official firmware from AT&T. He said there are less problems and fewer tweaks necessary to make his changes work by using the "official" firmware for the phone he develops on.

Just thought that I'd point out my battery life was MUCH better on 1.88 while using CR DE 2.3. I wish I could find that version to download again.

I see, thanks for the info. I figured that I might be able to find the answer in one of the later pages of the ROM's thread, but that it might also be heinously difficult to locate.
Did he also mention why he's decided to go with odex? Is it for the same reason?

Odex is wicked fast.

Can't be said enough: Don't ever install an OTA on a rooted Android device.
At a minimum, you will lose root. You may also be stuck in a bootloop, or you may get stuck on an unrootable firmware (depending on what they updated, and what holes they plugged).
If you are already rooted and bootloader unlocked, flash one of the stock rooted ROMs here under "Stock Rooted": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Not sure what 1.88 was updated to. But 2.23, 2.29, 2.33 are all very recent firmware builds (2.23 is Asian region for the carrier Singtel). Only difference is the carrier bloat, and you may need to manually enter the APN info for your carrier.

If you are a noob, the best thing to do is read read read, and find out:
-What root and flashing ROMs means, and whether you will want them.
-What firmware number the new OTA is, and what has been changed.
People get all excited about a new OTA, without even knowing what has been changed. Newer firmwares include a new hboot, which patches holes which allowed flashing kernels and radios. You may not want to update.
Also, root and unlocked bootloader are both good things. There is really no reason to give them up, just for the latest firmware. If its just the newest firmware you want, as I already mentioned, there are stock rooted ROMs in the Development forum that you can flash, and probably in less steps than unrooting and installing the OTA.

Did you factory reset and wipe cache and Dalvik before flashing?
Come to think of it, that's one reason that people like OTAs, they keep your user data (but that can often be a bad thing, as I've seen it mess up the performance for some people after the OTA). Also, wiping data is not really that big a deal. With Titanium Backup Pro, I'm up and running again in about 20 minutes after wiping data and flashing a new ROM.
Can you still get into hboot and recovery?

[Q] Unable to OTA Update

Hello!
I have recieved the Android 4.0.4 OTA update but am unable to install it. I had unlocked my bootloader but havent installed any ROM, and tried to do the OTA update, the phone shut down and booted up to the fastboot menu.. i relocked my phone and tried again, same result.. I called HTC and they had no idea, they got me to turn off the fast boot in the power settings, but that didnt work!
What do I need to do to get the OTA update to work?
Based on your avatar, you are in Australia? Not sure what the firmware changes are for your region. But in the US, the latest 4.0.4 firmware also changes hboot, and plugs the holes by which kernels and radios can be flashed from recovery. In other words, not being able to install the OTA may be a good thing. It might be better to install one of the rooted stock ROMs in the Development forum.
Can't say for certain, since my US carrier (AT&T) does things so much differently than anyone else. So hopefully some folks in your region can chime in.

Hey thanks for the response.
Yeah I am in Australia, but I would like to get OTA Updates until Im comfortable with properly putting new ROMs onto my phone..
My service provider (Optus) took it's sweet time to release this update and their only solution is to take it into their shop to get it repaired/looked at..
If you are rooted, you may need to unroot.
You may also want to try finding the OTA file on the SD card and deleting it, and trying to download it again.

Now, someone feel free to correct me. I do believe to get the JB OTA update, you'll have to RUU back to stock when you know the update has been pushed out. You're CID shouldn't matter in getting updates.

Probably correct. Root will either prevent you from getting the OTA notification altogether, or make the install fail (possibly even putting you into a bootloop, or stuck on the bootscreen). Likewise, unlocked bootloader will prevent the OTA from installing.
Moreover, I don't think the OP will get the OTA, since the phone is the US version, and not in the US. Probably need to download the RUU to get it at all.
And also, I would advise not installing any new OTA or RUU until folks on here have sorted out what it means to hboot, root, etc. They have plugged the root exploits for every firmware version to date, so I don't expect JB to be any different. Plus, I'll bet the JB firmware will be posted here on Development, in a safe, recovery-flashable, pre-rooted form. And probably soon after the OTA starts to hit. Maybe even before the OTA, if it gets leaked.

That is definitely not ok. Maximus is for the international One X (Tegra3 version). Completely different hardware. ROM won't work, and you might brick your phone.
Stay in the One X/XL forums that say "AT&T".

Also, just so you kow, JB has not started going out for our version of the One X. Only for the international version.
If there isn't a RUU for my phone, will it be possible for me to get the OTA update whenever it comes?
I have a backup of my stock rom, if I flash back to that when it's out will it be possible?

Stock ROM, and unrooted should be OK. But you will need to relock the bootloader too.
But I'd still just wait for the ROM to be posted in Development in a pre-rooted form, and just flash from recovery. Since you are on Telus, you will still be able to unlock the bootloader and root again (after an OTA). But why hassle with all the locking of the bootloader, returning to stock, etc.? JB will probably be posted here before you would get it OTA.
And for those on AT&T, I would definitely advise against accepting any OTA. Too many people rushed willy-nilly to accept the 2.20 OTA, then were on here complaining that they could no longer root (which for us also means no unlocked bootloader and no custom ROMs).

[Q] Help me please

Ok, so I have a HTC ONE X and i've had it since September and I have never gotten the 4.0.4 update. I contacted my provider (AT&T), they told me that they made the update available over the air. I went to my Settings app and clicked Check for Updates and after about a minute it went back to the same screen. I then contacted HTC Customer Support and the guy told me that they never made it available OTA. I'm confused. Is there something wrong with my phone? Help!?!?!

huh?
So you are on the 1.85 firmware?
If you have any desire to root, flash custom ROMs, etc., my advice would be to not update, and root the phone now. The 2.20 firmware includes an updated 1.14 hboot which plugs the exploits by which boot.img and radios can be flashed in recovery. This means that flashing ROMs takes extra steps of extracting boot.img from the ROM and flashing it over fastboot. You can't flash radios at all on the new hboot (with the exception of CM10 radios). People are actually downgrading the hboot, so they don't have to deal with these things.
Once rooted and bootloader unlocked, you can just flash any ROM you want, including stock rooted 2.20 or newer versions firmwares.
If you still want to upgrade the official way, and can't get the OTA, you can flash the RUU. It will wipe user data, but IMO this is a better cleaner way to update than OTA, anyway.
here is the ota http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_EVITA_UL_...2.7-1.85.502.3_R2_releasenin45grzkfswb95v.zip
this method might let you manually update [How-To] Update devices via the OTA .zip

[Q] Stupid upgrading existing root question [ANSWERED]

Hi,
I want to flash an AT&T One X to some of the latest jelly bean ROMs (MIUI in particular). The phone is currently rooted with the old firmware. I've read all the guides and I'm unclear as to how to upgrade the firmware on existing root.
Since its currently rooted, do I just flash one of the new ROMs and I'm updated to new firmware?
Or do I do RUU first to new firmware and re-root? (Do I use the original bin file from first root?) If so, is there a guide for this around?
Thanks for the help
Is your bootloader unlocked, and do you have TWRP installed?
If so, flashing JB is like flashing any other ROM (no need to RUU, and no benefit at all to do so). Just move the ROM to the phone's SD card, then flash from recovery. If on hboot 1.14, you will need to extract boot.img from the ROM zip, and flash with fastboot.
This will likely answer many of your questions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952076
Also, its customary (and useful) to have some information about the question you are asking in your thread title, not just [Q].

Just flash the new rom. You wouldn't want to update your firmware because then you would have to flash the boot.img seperately in fastboot, and you would n't be able to flash radios, or boot animations at all. In fact many people have downgraded their firmware to the old version because of these annoyances.

and that would update the phones firmware to 2.20 but still have hboot 1.14 - which I understand is the preferred version? Firmware and ROM are the same thing. Once you flash a ROM, it formats the system partition and installs the new ROM/firmware. The old firmware is wiped, and new one installed.
Firmware number reported in Settings is somewhat irrelevant when you flash a custom ROM. It will say whatever the dev makes it say, such as MIUI 2.12 etc. The custom ROM might be based on an official firmware number (such as JB 3.17) but its been modded by the dev, so its not really the same firmware anymore. The ROM thread will tell you what firmware version its based on. If you want JB, its going to be based on fimrware 3.xx.
Installing custom ROMs does not touch hboot. The only way to downgrade hboot is with the JET kit in the Development forum, which requires a Linux computer.

Yes, you are good to flash radios with hboot 1.09.
The latest radio from AT&T is the one that was released with firmware 2.20. See the radio thread, if you haven't already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694012
Keeping in mind the latest radio will not always yield the best results. Radio reception is most often linked to your exact geographic location, and is often a matter of trial and error. But I think many people had some decent battery life improvement with the 2.20 radio. You are also free to try radios 2.29, 2.40 etc. The fact that they were released for other carriers in other countries is irrelevant. They may still yield reception improvements, or not. As mentioned, radio flashing is pretty much trial and error. The latest is not necessarily the greatest.

Hmm.. all is well except the phone died while playing with it and now won't charge via a PC USB cable? No charge light at all.
After you flashed a rom or before? If it completely died it'll take 5 or so minutes before the light comes on and able to boot up once its on the charger.
By all means I mean no disrespect and I'm not questioning your intelligence, but make sure your computer is on while you are charging via USB. I forget about that sometimes

Also, use the wall charger, not USB, when something like this happens. The wall charger charges much faster (more amps?) than USB, by far. Leave it on the wall charger for several hours, then see if the charge light comes on, or if you can boot.
This has randomly happened to some people, and leaving the phone on the wall charger for a few hours usually does the trick.
yup it came back after a couple minutes. thanks again.

Telus One X - Unlock/Root/SCID/S-Off if you took JB OTA

If you were a bit silly like me, perhaps you flashed the JB OTA on your Telus HOX before you rooted, unlocked, got SuperCID and S-Off. I didn't have much luck searching the forum for exact steps on how to get that stuff after taking the OTA. All the info is here, but I was confused what applied to my Telus phone and what would work even after the JB OTA. So I figured I'd detail my steps here in case someone else wants a detailed guide. Obviously the credit for everything below goes to the original authors of the techniques. I'm just linking stuff.
Unlock
1.Register at HTCDev and follow the directions to unlock your bootloader. Its pretty straightforward. You don't need to download the whole huge 300+ Android SDK. You can just get the adb-fastboot package from this thread.
Flash Recovery
I flashed TWRP with one-click via this AIO toolkit. There is probably tons of other ways to do it.
Root
Not sure its possible to root the stock JB unless you install a different ROM. So I did a system reset in TWRP and the flashed the Viper XL ROM. Its pre-rooted.
SuperCID
Its quite easy - just follow this guide exactly.
S-Off
Follow this guide and you shouldn't have a problem.
Once you have all that, you can downgrade your touch firmware. The reason to do this is if you want to install AOSP-based ROMs like CyanogenMod or AOKP. I haven't done that yet because I'm pretty happy with ViperXL. If you want to stick with Sense-based ROMs it isn't necessary to downgrade.
As a final note, once you've got ViperXL and S-Off I'd highly recommend trying the ElementalX Kernel.

You can. I was able to root my stock JB (had to install SuperSU manually) after installing the custom recovery through fastboot.

It should work on any S4 dual-core One XL except on AT&T.

But not the ATT version because they're locked from HTCdev.

Whoops--corrected.
if i have the unlock token i can root 3.18 AT T ota?
Yup, if you managed to unlock the bootloader then you're clear to go all the way to s-off (and you should).
I have a htc one S , but this SuperCID doesn't work on my device.
Does it work after the JB OTA with the One X ?
I'm unable to use my Phone without using custom ROMs, 'cause I can't flash any RUU (CID is T-MOB101).
(I had battery problems after JB OTA-Update)
This isn't the One S forum. I'd advise asking in the appropriate forum.
Ok i can bearly find any info i'm sorry if im in the wrong place but the one x plus from [email protected] just got an ota is it still posible to root after this update? I tryed hysoon200's tool kit but the htc dev website claims my unlock key is too short i coppied it perfectly several times infact the last time i almost bricked it the screen was black for a half hour and after 2-5 mins holding the power button it booted back up can someone please point my retarted a$$ to the rite direction?
Hey, the One X+ is a totally different phone so I can' t really say what's the best direction. You are best off posting in the One X+ forum.

yea i'm sorry i got it lol
i wound up following the htc steps and manually made a folder and it gave me the correct token so needless to say it's unlocked flashed the su.zip made a nandroid and now i got full root thanks for your help thoe but now i'm looking at roms i keep hearing viper is the thing to have but i'm impartial to cyanogen so i'm looking for unofficial portss i wish they would crack s-off so i could do a normal flash without the dang adb lol
If I do this, will I lose my SIM unlock? I am using an unlocked Telus One X with Fido. Thanks.
You can s-off. You just need to change yiur cid to 11111111 first. Aosp roms are all in the original android development section of this forum.
I believe carrier unlock is done at the bootloader layer so it should not affect your sim unlock

I just unlocked the bootloader. Now I want to flash TWRP, but do I need to run the X Factor exploit in the AIO toolkit? Thanks.
Just a quick question, I did all the steps including downgrading the touch firmware (thanks for the help!), but I just have one more question. I was looking at CM 10.1 ROM and it said and update to RUU 3.18 is required. How can I check my RUU? Do I need to update? Thanks for any help.
Just checked my RUU, it's 3.17.

3.17 is fine. If that cm10.1 doesn't boot, ruu again, flash recovery, downgrade touchscreen and flash it again.
