[solved] Can't update. - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all I feel bad for making a thread because I feel like the answer is out there and I just cant find it.
The unit is a TF101G and WW version B9O.
Basically I used this to return to stock http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/28/how-to-unroot-and-remove-cwm-recovery-on-asus-transformer/
This worked fine but now i can't seem to update to stock ICS the tablet does not find any updates automatically (or going into settings and forcing a search)
and when manually downloading ICS from Asus both 9.2.2.4 and 9.2.2.6, neither work.
I was originally using CWM but with no luck there i tried using stock recovery current firmware version is 8.2.3.13
I cant seem to figure this out.

Do a factory reset then update thatll do it
Hit the thanks button if i helped

You need to be completely stock for the update to go, as in no CWM and sometimes it matters which SKU you are on. You can always NVFlash stock ICS if nothing else works

Nvflash does not work for tf101G
So ive got 3 files on my microsd card now after wipingdata as ROM CHIEF suggested the orifinal file name unchanged(yes its unzipped once) the same file called EP_UPDATE.zip and the same file again called UPDATE.zip still when i boot into stock recovery it shows a progress bar for a few seconds then goes to the android and '!' sign and no combination of vol up/down power on seem to activate any controls (like it does on my phone)
Edit: I'm now trying to root VIA PERI and it does not work i get "cannot open for write access is denied" i also tried using wolfs method manually (Im pretty sure PERI just automates wolf) to flash the ICS blob directly and get the same access denied. I guess the exploit isn't working ?

What fw are you on? You need to be on a ICS firmware, yes PERI automates wolf's exploit.

yeah I was on 8.2 something which i think was the problem. managed to get it to update by renaming the zip to EP101_SDUPDATE.zip. It didnt really help that i had 5 different people telling me to rename it to different things. I'm happy I got it to work in the end.
PERI saved me in the first place when i originally couldn't flash anything (CWM was from rom manager) so thanks for the nifty program.

[Q] Rooted Infuse but cannot rename recovery in system/bin???

Okay... Long story short, I have an Infuse, which I flashed with the Gingerbread 2.3.5 leak using Odin this weekend (It was rooted and all was well before) I couldn't get my email to work correctlry, so like I dumb-a** I continued monkeying with it until I bricked it. (Insert laughter here)
After an hour or two, I was finally able to get it back into download mode and used GTG's Ultimate Unbrick to help my phone back to life. Link here for whoever needs it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
When it was all said and done, the phone was a F/W version 2.2.1 BB ver. I997UCKD5 kernel 2.6.32.9 FROYO.UCKD5 build. (At least it sort of worked. Most apps fail and cause a force quit prompt. Google Talk authentication fails and I cannot reliably download any apps from the market)
I had a heck of a time getting it to root, but was able to do so. SU installed and binary updated to 3.0. I load up root explorer and go to /system/bin to replace the recovery file and have have hit a snag that I just can't get past. I changed the directory permissions to R/W and can rename the file, but every time I do so, if I leave the directory to copy the replacement recovery file, the file reverts back to it's original name. I have also tried just simply deleting it, which shows a confirmation message that it has been deleted, but when I go out of the directory and back in, it's there again. I have also just tried overwriting it or changing the file permissions to no avail. I'm totally perplexed.
I have tried using Odin to re-flash the Gingerbread, the Stock ROM, and the "unbrick" files again, just to get me to a different point, but they all fail in the partitioning phase or partially through the FS check.
Any thoughts? (I've been at this for a few days now and am ready to just start fresh with a new infuse, keeping this one as a test unit. LOL)
I'm looking spcifically for help getting this phone into the modified 3e recovery mode, so I can load new roms from the phone, or maybe a different ROM that I can load with Odin to make it work properly again...
Thank you very much in advance.

Odin id notoriously unreliable. Especially on the infuse. Use heimdall to unbrick. Adam outlet posted a one click heimdall but locked the thread because it had issues on windows XP. But I would get the full version of heimdall and use it to flash the community kernel. voodoo kernels will root you on first boot as well as have cwm baked in. why people are still rooting and using green cwm after pushing a modded recovery file I'll never understand.
After Odin did you factory reset from the settings? If not yeah you'll get gtalk authentication fail (happened to me many times before ) , if you haven't done it I would suggest before you root / using different Rom on your phone, you should considered doing it.

Need to install latest version of busybox to get root explorer to work properly....
You can download busybox installer from the market...
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G - 1.6ghz
A BIG thanks goes out to both of you! no, I had not done a factory reset. once I did so all the apps started working again.
also I verified my busybox version and found out I was a couple behind thanks for that hint.
it also turned out that my root explorer needed to be updated as well. Once I got everything working it took the 3e recovery without a hitch.
thanks again for your reply!

Also, before editing anything in /system/, you need to remount the whole partition r/w.

Worlds Most Complicated Issue - HELP!

My TF is in a complicated mess because im stupid!
I need your help XDA Community!
My TF was rooted with KRAKD rom. I decided I wanted to unroot my TF and followed what seemed like a popular guide from theunlockr.com
And it worked except it rolled me back to the stone age - 8.2.3.13
Naturally I connected to my WIFI network to update to the latest version but it kept saying that there's no update available so I thought I would give a manual update a try which I have done before so I know I followed the correct procedures.
In asus recovery mode the loading bar pops up for a while then the triangle with the exclamation mark appears. When I booted it a window popped up which read something like "update failed (12)".
Then I tried something I saw in a forum which apparently is another way to do a manual recovery. Renaming the zip file to EP101_SDUPDATE.zip and leaving it on the root of external SD or internal (tried both) and booting in recovery. It didn't work.
So I stupidly thought that I might aswell try rooting it again with nachoroot and flash recovery then flash the latest stock rom. Well what happened was that it rooted but I could not flash CWM following any methods. The one click recovery installer apk didnt work just said file parsing error. Tried doing it through ADB but always eventually leads to permission denied.
So I have a half rooted transformer with 8.2.3.13 on which razor claw and one click recovery cant be installed and I cant update it to the latest firmware.
Device Details:
Model Number: EPAD
Android Version: 3.0.1
GPS Version: V1.2.4
WIFI Version: V5.248.35
Bluetooth Version: V6.12

Build Number: HRI66.WW_epad-8.2.3.13-20110511
Dont have a mobile dock.
COME ON XDA SEE IF YOU CAN SOLVE THIS ONE!!!

NVFLASH doesn't seem to detect my device
When I put the TF in APX my computer recognises but when I run NVFLASH it doesn't detect it plus I can hear the Windows 7 disconnect sound only when I run NVFLASH.
The drivers seem to be fine.
did you even install superuser from market after you rerooted?
Get the 8.6.5.23 ROM, put it on your SD card and make 2 copies, name one WW_epad-user-8.6.5.23.zip and name the other EP101_SDUPDATE.zip, I find the first one is good enough, but having multiple copies can't hurt.
Now try to let stock recovery flash your SD card file
That worked for me..(the 8.6.6.23 is for the tf101G, but it works as well on mine which is standard tf101, if you happen to find that one, just name the zip file appropriately)
Let me know if this works, your problem is not complicated BTW haha

[Q] help save my transfomer

so i have a b90 tf101 with .21 which was previously rooted with vipermod. I wanted to avoid flashing cwm until ics came out to keep it as stock as possible for upgrade.
So i was trying to figure out ubuntu installer, and it wouldnt work for some reason, so i figured i might try to reinstall busybox. Anyway somewhere along the line my wifi stopped working it gets stuck on obtaining ip, then i tried factory reset, and wiping all data to fix that issue (didnt work). I then noticed i somehow lost my root access. so i tried rerooting and it keeps saying -exec 'system/bin/sh' failed: no such file or directory.
So i guess my best option is to try to get this thing flashed with stock firmware using stock recovery if possible, and would love an explanation of how to do that (searched for miles online and couldnt find anything about how to use the stock recovery) or if anyone has any other advice it would be much appreciated
Thanx

Well, if you still have cwm and can get to it...you're good. just download the super wipe lite file from the revolution hd thread...download a ROM such as revolution hd...put both in external sd...go to cwm recovery...flash the wipe script...then flash the rom.
Then just wait till ics is out...then flash a custom ics ROM...instead of trying to go stock again and messing things up...cause i bet that there will be a root stock ics rom within hours of release.
thats my problem i never installed cwm. cant i flash a stock rom using the stock recovery? do you know anything about the wifi issue? if not how can i get rid of superuser so i can rma?

After you have download the file from Asus, make sure to extract the files from within. Put it on the root of your sd card.
Power off the TF.
Push and hold Vol down plus power button
As soon as you see words scrolling at the top left corner
Push Vol up immediately (within 5 sec) to get into recovery mode.
Hopefully it read the update file and flash it.
sry hopefully this is the last question. when i extract the file there is a folder called asus inside it with another zip inside that and a blob with some files inside that. Which should i put on the sd card. and by sd card do you mean the internal memory or microsd.
thanks a million for the help
IIRC, after you extract there's an Asus folder, in that folder is an Update folder.
It's the zip inside the Update folder that need to go on the external micro sd card
as a side not the reason that the ubuntu installer id not work is that you have a b90 which it clearly states ubuntu does not work on becasue of sbk2
i could be wrong but im pretty sure it just visualizes ubuntu and doesnt actually install it. anyway thanks for all the help guys it turns out to flash the stock firmware you just put it in the microsd and press the tiny exclamation mark next to the clock on the stock rom. took me forever to figure out, but it fixed everything. I got wifi working, then re-rooted, then flashed team-rogue recover (thanks for that one baseballfanz) as rom manager said it wasnt compatible with tf101, but do u guys know if there is any way to get regular cwm, and finally flashed krakd.
Thanks again to everyone, and let me just say this is one of the most helpful forums i have ever been on

Not sure what the "regular cwm" is but you should be able to flash krakd rom with the team rouge cwm recovery.
The only other recovery I recommend would be Roach's 3.2.0.1 version.
Both version can be found here.

[Q] Can't update after unroot (TF101)

Hi, not sure where to go with this, have tried having a look around but not found anything. I un-rooted using this guide here :
http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/28/how-to-unroot-and-remove-cwm-recovery-on-asus-transformer/
Everything seemed to go okay, but when updating it says there are no updates. At the moment I am stuck on v 3.0.1 it seems.
Anyone got any ideas please?
Edit - forgot to mention I am a UK user, so I used the WW file on the site.
Do you still have a custom recovery? That will prevent OTAs from coming, make sure EVERYTHING is stock, no su or recovery or anything weird. If not try manually placing the ASUS update.zip
or NvFlashing/rooting putting recovery on and reinstalling latest total stock ICS.
Thanks for your reply - forgive me, I literally rooted when I had the device and haven't got a clue how to check if or what custom recovery is. Is Super User just an icon in the apps folder and if that's gone then I no longer have it installed?
Well, I don't have anything on the SD card anymore - I wiped all the data that was on that I managed to get into that menu thing (holding down power button + vol down, then vol up) but it's just the android robot with a warning triangle. I assume this is because there is nothing on the SD card?
That means you have stock recovery and no CWM.
So I need to look into this NvFlash thing then? It's a B50 device.
Yes that'd probably be your best bet if you have a B50

Okay, I've done a lot of reading up here : ahttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494230&highlight=nvflash+for+b50
and it seems NVFlash is a tool for unbricking my device? I'm not sure that's what I need, will this allow me updates or something? Sorry finding it a bit confusing...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683311
What it does is restore your TF to complete stock, here's the link for latest ICS firmware with total stock using NvFlash, you'll be able to take OTA updates too. All files needed are included, say thanks to Korumera!
Edit - will post back

Okay that was easy enough but still won't let me update anything (unless I'm on the lastest updates?) I seem to have a lot of Chinese apps on here now and am unable to add a google account on the tablet, will only let me add an Asus Sync account (which I've never used). Notifications seem to be in Chinese also but I have set languages etc to English (UK).
that's... really weird. You might just want to try flashing a US blob. idk why it wont let you update either.
I was being a total noob, I used the wrong firmware. I'm now on ICS, still not doing updates for some reason though but - thanks for all your help.
That's because that's the current latest firmware It should pop up when there's an update.

[Q] How Do I Downgrade TF101 from 8.6.5.21?

I have spent hours searching and reading, but I can't find an up-to-date answer.
I have a B70 TF101 that is at 8.6.5.21. I rooted using nachoroot. I want to put on cyanogenmod 9 RC. It does work using ROM Manager. Seems that in spite of telling it to install clockworkmod, it doesn't. I can't get it into APX mode. So I guess I'm ready to try to downgrade it to 8.6.5.19. I find loads of references and links to multiupload for that file, but it no longer is available.
How can I downgrade to 8.6.5.19? I just want to put on Cyanogenmod.
Please help.
Hi Thornthree,
try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25385687 step 3.
in this post you find places for the blob file and what to do (step 3)
I think you need the 8.6.6.19 (is for tf101/g, but also for the tf101
But is your TF now able to go into apx mode yes or no?
maybe start with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012
goodluck......
There's not a need to downgrade.
You could also use PERI.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26737790
Yep, several one-click rooting methods out for the latest versions.
My PERI tool as mentioned above is one of these, just plug-in, run and root.
I could never get into APX mode. I followed all of the instructions to get there that I could find but none of them worked. The power and up volume keys did nothing on my TF101. I finally got power and volume down to get me into clockworkmod, but then it couldn't find the zip file. When I finally got the zip file visible, then chose reboot system now, it just kept looping into clockworkmod. Somehow, in the end, after all kinds of crazy attempts of key combinations, it's somehow worked.
I had to end up going back to factory reset, then all kinds of acrobatics to place a zip file in the right place, then do another factory reset and wipe, which somehow ended up in my having cyanogenmod working. I don't know if I could reproduce the process. Also, it's very frustrating that none of the tutorials did anything to work on my tablet. I'm just thankful that it's where I want it right now. I don't know if I need to install OTA root keeper or not, and I don't know what I'll do if I ever need to upgrade to a different ROM or an updated cyanogenmod.
Thanks for all the replies. I'll keep them in mind for the future.
