Hi guys,
I'm new so please forgive me if this has alreqady been encoutered, although I looked and couldn't find anything.
I have a HTC Desire GSM, rooted, running the BCM ICS rom, latest version (4 something). I installed it properly, making a backup, wiping everything etc, I have had this rom installed for over a week, and it has been working fine. I have been able to charge it off my laptop and the mains, turn it off/reboot etc with no problems.
However today, whilst I was reading an ebook (and it was plugged into laptop charging), it suddenly shutdown, saying there was no battery left. I thought this was strange, so I tried to turn it on, first normally, then recovery, then hard reboot -all to no avail. So I plugged it into the mains to see if it would charge, and no, it won't. I've tried removing the battery etc, and this won't work so I'm stumped.
Does anyone know what's happened? If not, is there any more information I can give/is there any other thread that could help?
Thanks

Hey,
I have the same, or at least similar problem: It's too bad you never got an answer here. Did you ever figure it out?
It hapenned in March, and I have bought a new phone since, but I am currently trying to figure out what's wrong with my Desire. I was also running the (then current) BCM ICS ROM. At some point, my phone stopped charging. I noticed the problem while the rom was running, but I simply couldn't get it to charge, and it eventually ran out of juice.
I initially assumed that it was a contact problem with the micro-usb port, but taking the phone apart and examining it could not confirm this. Now I wonder whether perhaps it is simply a problem with the battery. Can the desire be turned on when plugged in if the battery is removed? If it can, this would indicate that the problem I am having is not related to the battery.
Thanks.

As we know that ICS for our old Desire is beta, maybe something crashed and caused this. have you got another cable to test if its not its fault?

It cannot be a software issue, because even when the phone is off, it doesn't charge. I have also tried several different cables plugged into several different sources- I am confident that the problem is either with the battery, or the phone itself.
Are you having the same or similar problem as leemrlee and I?
New Thread
By the way, in case anybody is following this, I started a thread specific to my problem in the Desire Q&A forum, as I think this topic (Battery problems with the HTC Desire) is more appropriate over there.

Hi guys
I've had the Sensation for about 3months now, and suddently yesterday it stopped working. It wont charge, no LED's and wont start at all. There have not been any waterdamage, drops or rough use.
I've read a lot concerning similar problems on this forum, but none of the solutions has worked for me.
What I can tell is that I have tried after searching the forums:
- SDK, ADB and try to reboot the device via USB-connection (device not found)
- Win7 (32bit) can't recognise the phone (asking for drivers which are not found in HTC Sync, QHSUSB_DLOAD)
- Trying to enter recovery mode (Volume Down + Power up)
- Charge the battery overnight
- Charge the battery with a plastic-piece covering the two middle pins on the battery (As suggested in a thread)
- Battery out for 1min and then put it back in and start up
Neither of these worked, so are there any other good ideas? Or is it bricked?
Hi guys,
i have exactly the same problem, already have tried all of these solutions, nothing have worked for me... Please help.
PS:sometimes my screen lights up <black totally, but lights up>... when plugged into usb cable or charger... but not now anymore...
I have bought this phone in china, there is S/N but i guess that here in UK i cannot do anything about it since HTC's warranty is not global...

Also keep note of which recovery you are working off of. There have been charging issues with certain recoveries.
Yeah, I read several threads and posts about recovery-issues... Unfortuantly I cant check what version I got myself, as it wont start up at all :/

I would suggest to go to a store that sell's the Sensation and ask if you can test one of their batteries out to see if your phone has either a battery issue or something else. If you are stateside, of course try a tmobile store, but without knowing where you are located, this is a hypothetical at this point.
I know I had an issue with my Nexus1 not booting up from a kernel I had flashed. But I noticed my charging led was flashing three times and then stop. I researched this here on xda and found that it just needed to be put into recovery again somehow. I ended up just plugging the phone into the wall and remove the battery. Try to power it on there and then reinsert the battery and try the power + volume down button. That time it booted for me. But again, this was for my Nexus1 not with this phone.
same happened to me, sent to HTC and had main board replaced, lcd, flex cable etc. the driver the phone looks for is the equip HTC use to jtag... I am not sure if this is a hardware failure or boot corruption...but even though it was s-off via alpha rev it was that damaged they didnt complain... i say hardware failure. the thing is even when i have s-off i didnt change the rom. I have a riff box on order so if this happens again we can surely see if this failure is software or hardware..
Yeah, do what kpjimmy said; go to a store where Sensation's are sold and ask if you could use a battery to test it out to see if it's bricked. It it's not, you'll need a new battery (try getting one for free from HTC, citing warranty. I did it with my battery cover). If it doesn't work, you're mostly likely bricked, unfortunately. Refer to anarchy's post for more info on that side of things
Same problem here yesterday.. can't charge. But phone heat. I just pull out battery, n put back.keep repeated that. Finally can on. U use custom kernal?

Havn't had the time to really do any custom ROM or the like, so the phone was all original from the factory...
Ok, firstly I hope I got this in the right section.
But I have a Sensation XE, I had an issue with the stock battery (it turning off at around the 60% - 40% area). Tried to sort that out by, s-off followed by superwipe, flashing firmware and darkforest 5.1.5 rom.
Turned out the actual battery was this issue after I bought the Anker 1900mah battery. Everything was fine until yesterday.
Now the touch screen doesnt respond 99% of the time, if it does.. it is only for a few swipes after i restart the phone.
But the odd thing is.. when I use 4ext recovery touch, the touch screen works just fine!!! The issue only every arises when I normally boot the phone.
I have tried superwiping the phone so many times, using every tool/format/wipe option from the 4ext recovery followed by installing the latest darkforest rom or the android revolution.
So I don't thing its the digitizer, I've tried fully charging / discharging both batteries using the official htc charger. I've played around with the grounding pin. No luck.
I'm about to try insertcoin rom.
Anyone had this problem in this much depth?
I'm so close to throwing it at a wall and buying the htc one, but being in Australia, its stupidly expensive.
Thanks in advance
Jake
Hey man. Did you manage to fix this problem. I think im having the same problem, started last night.
Is it a battery issue?
A lil Asian market stall man thought it was the micro USB port, as I was charging it via a different USB wall adapter. So u just put it on Mazuma and got the full working price for it. But sorry , no fix that I found. Let me know if you fix it out of interest please
Ah okay.
I am sensing my batt should be replaced and would solve this crazy ghost touchscreen problem.
It doesnt happen when the batt is charged / decent battery level like 50% above.
It happens when it is really low like below 15%.
With that, i have developed a new superstition / myth that battery level/faultness has a relationship with touch screen performance.
lol
Just wondering how often are people experiencing this problem when the phone become completely unresponsive (unable to turn on, unable to detect, no light when charged).
I had this problem and never had it resolved and just sent the phone back for repair. It seems more and more people are posting they have this problem. Is this a ROM problem or does the HTC phone just get fried? Mine happened after I installed Revolution 6.6.2..it rebooted fine...and reinstalled apps with titanium..then all of a sudden a long tone while I was on phone and the phone unresponsive, turned off...and never turned on again.
Anyone with same problem...would appreciate your experience..and maybe we can figure out why it's happening. And I mean...the phone is just dead...no bootloop, no adb...nothing.
I ''had'' rooted Sensation Juopunutbear S-OFF,I filled the battery full...and install AOKP ROM Everything is working fine....After resetting the phone,
He did not respond...do not want to boot, does not want to even turn on,I tried everything from taking the battery to charge...no signs.....
when connecting phone to computer, sound is heard...and requires some drivers QHSUSB_DLOAD
removing battery sim sdcard and connect to power outlet and tried to switch it on-nothing...not react
is still under warranty....9 months old
I asked no one knows why it happened
I sent it to the service and I hope will not notice that he S-OFF and ROOTED :\
there are still a lot of people this problem here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618683
Hmmm..at least yours is detected on computer. Mine was completely unresponsive...nothing worked. Some had similar problem as mine when not even the computer detects it.
IT seems to be happening quite often..and I am not sure if it's a ROM problem....but it seems it's not only from a specifice ROM.
I had one just like the op except it was stock with s-off, no custom rom yet. I turned it off and it never came back, so got a new one!
From another similar thread:
Charge your phone for 20 minutes. If you're using a Sense ROM, disable fast boot in Settings>Power. Fastboot doesn't actually power off your device, just puts it into sleep, like in Windows. This means the battery drains, even while it's "off".
On this forum, we see it atleast once a week. Something was going totally fine, no biggy, then suddenly it won't turn on, seemingly won't charge, no LEDs, not recognized by PC, etc etc.
The odds are low that it'll happen to you, but more so than other phones.

But is this related to hardware issue or a custom ROM / firmware problem? My question is....should I try to root and do the same thing again if my phone get replaced?
If it's related to custom ROM/firmware pb...maybe it needs to be looked at? Especially when everything is running fine like many people report...
Well it would be nice if ALL of these occurrences were logged into a single thread and each user listed their firmware, rom, and kernel (which I'm most interested in)...
well i got the same problem . while playing a game phone got stuck and automatically turned off with some sound . now its desnt turning on and cant charge it coz led doesnt working ( what should i do?? going to use a another battery . if not :s idk (

Hi to all,
I'm in a similar situation, yesterday I updated the 4ext recovery the beta (sorry dont know what version it is) and it worked fine on the phone.
Until I thought hmm, I try [ROM][04/26/12] Virtuous Inquisition v4.0.2 :: AOSP-Experience Senseless ICS (4.0.3). I was going through the software and I've done a format on the microSD card though virtuous, and done a REBOOT on the phone, no Reboot at all. By the way while running the OS lights for the Home, Menu, Back and Search weren't truned on.
Now my phone wont turn on (although I can hear the USB being connected to my windows7 X32 bit PC). When connected to Pc or power outlet there is no indication of my phone is charged or being recharged, no light indicator.
Ok, so what if I tried using ADB commands to see if my phone still beeing detected.
I used ADB under Administrator
adb devices
*daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
*daemon started successfully*
List of devices attached ( although i dont get the model number of the phone)
fastboot reboot
waiting for device
fastboot reboot-bootloader
waiting for device
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Ok no luck. Now tried to do install with the RUU_PYRAMID_LE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.105_R_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_251961_signed.exe
Runed under Admin again, so still no luck, all I get was an Error[170] usb connection Error. So the utility rom still could not detect the phone.
By the way when the phone is off, then I press volume down and power button, my phone is AOSP-Experience Senseless indeed, can't switch nothing on.
All well see what happens.
Yes..I think it's good to have a thread about this problem...maybe some more experienced DEVs can see why this is happening especially if this is occuring because of ROM/firmware or more hardware problems.
I am waiting for my phone to be sent to HTC and see what they say..hope they'll fix/replace one!
Battery, Brick or Senseless
By any chance, did anyone tried to use some friends or family they have the same phone, and use their battery. Maybe battery needs replacing?
Hopefully I can here someone says that I'm right, battery problem.
Also I'm looking at other websites to see whats the alternative to our situation.
Or maybe its just a brick, I will wait and see the Developers of this thread

For some it could be battery problems....but I think most of the ones reported it's not. As with mine..the battery was fully charged 100% when it happened...I think it was actually plugged in even.
The thread is for bricked phone that had this driver thing when it plugs into the computer...but if the phone is completely unresponsive...it's not goign to work!
I kept my phone charged for few hours, although my battery was full as well, the phone remained cold.
i had a similar problem last week on 04/19... battery was charging over night... at morning i turned the alarm off and after that the phone was dead... i sented it to support and now i have a new board inside and totaly new problems...locked bootloader and an unkown H-BOOT version (1.29.0000)
i also tried my battery in a other phone with no problems.
i had revolutionary 6.3. on it
Update 14/09/2012
Ok, I don't think what I had in mind helped. On 13th, I had multiple shutdown while trying to use cameras and today had multiple shutdown while on the phone to someone.
Think I will try doing something with Firmware next, now have a feel it might be the cause. I have no idea what is wrong, so just going to give with anything really. Will report back soon.
Update: 13/09/2012
After a complete drain the first time, by booting into recovery and bootloader (just want to remind everyone that this is because I can't make my phone boot). Then I left it on charging for the whole night, and I did this through wall charger NOT USB. I think I read it somewhere that they recommended this when calibrating your battery. Then the next day got 1 random shutdown, then I used it until it is completed drain again. Then followed by another full charge using wall charger. Today I have been using it for 6 hours and 21 minutes, haven't had a single problem. I don't know how not doing this would cause the phone to shutdown, but doing what I did seems to be working so far. I can actually rely on it for something now, say important phone calls.
Here was my reply to elvisypi:
Just to answer your question, it would random shutdown (not so much reboot) at anytime, at any battery percentage. I could do be doing anything, using any app, sometimes when I am not even using the phone.
I don't think it's a hardware/battery/ROM/kernel problem, I tried to say that it is a combined problem caused by flashing a phone too many times maybe or too often in a period of time. Also I was just about to update saying that calibrate battery does help. I had no reboot so far and this is only the second full charge and full drain I did.

After reading kushXmaster's post (click here) about how to add an object to help the battery stay in position (or get better connection), I found evidence that my issue was different. Before anyone ask, yes I have tried kushXmaster's idea, and no it did not work for me.
Ok, this is what I found. I had this problem not only with my current phone (htc sensation) but also with my previous phone (htc desire). So now thinking about it, it can't be the hardware problem. Cos the same problem happening to 2 different phones is pretty unlikely, not impossible, but very unlikely. The other thing was that my phones (both) didn't do this at the start when it was new, and it has only been like this a few months later (since I rooted it). For those who already guessed, yes I believe it's the flashing phones which is messing it up. However I don't know the reason or understand what is wrong with the phone. I have tried wipe battery stats and calibration, nothing worked, the only thing I found was when I go back to Sense 4 roms the problem seems better, but it is still there.
The last and most important reason why I am don't think this is a battery or hardware problem, is that my phone boots into bootloader or recovery with no problem (no reboot or shutdown). But when i tell it to boot normally it decides it hates me and turns it self off.
I am currently experiencing this problem, my phone is in recovery and I am waiting for battery to drain completely. Then gonna do calibration from there, hopefully this will work. I will keep you guys updated. Also if anyone has suggestions please leave a comment, and also let me know if anyone else is in the same position, good luck!

If I could get it to turn on then I have a lot of ways to drain it quickly, but like I said it won't boot without shutting down before I could do anything. I turn it on, and I see the lock screen then bam it is shut down again.

If you get random reboots, shutdowns, than don't even bother to calibrate the battery. It has nothing to do with the calibration. Tell us more info, how do the reboots happen, how often, what are you doing when it happens, etc. It could be a kernel/ROM problem, charger, battery, hardware. Pls give us more detailed info

Thanks for the tip, but tbh if i know all that I don't really need to be asking anyone. For example, if it is a ROM problem, i just change ROM. The problem is that I don't know the cause and it seems to be everything and anything, it will shut down at different length of time, sometimes when it just starts, others 30 seconds after boot has completed. I am not looking for a solution, I am more wondering what everyone else has experienced when they say they have random reboots or shutdown, because after tones of research no one has provided anything that fixes my problem.

I had a same reboot problem and tried the kushXmaster's trick with the business card and did not worked for me either, at the beginning…
There was no reboot or shutdown in bootloader mode in my device either. When I flashed new firmware and ROM the problem was gone, but only for few weeks. I tried multiple ROMs also, but always with the same result. This is why I was skeptic with the business card battery fix also.
But then I read kushXmaster's thread again and put an alu foil as shown by Shreyas Jani and pulled the ground pin as described by StuartTheFish. I still do not understand what happened, but my phone is working perfectly more than a month now, without restarts and shut downs. I do not know which solution helped (not sure if I placed a business card correctly before). But I do not want to experiment with this anymore. I did not even removed a battery cover since that time and I'm glad it is all working now.
Hope this helps.

I experienced exactly what you experienced, when i flash a new ROM it is ok for a while. Then just gets to the stage where it happens again. I also tried almost every single ROM I could find, only sense 4 seemed to help but still didn't solve this problem completely.
Thanks for the help, really useful. If what I am trying now doesn't work then what you suggested will definably be my next hope. Cheers!
Edit: I know what you mean, if it works that back cover is not coming off.
same as you
I experience now typically the same problem as yours.
Did changing firmware helped? And how to do this?
So...my desire is acting strange (yes i use the search funtion, but found nothing close).
If i start the phone without sim, no problem. all good. but with sim in it, it reboot right after launcher appear (if i'm fast enough, i can activate airplane mode, so it wont reboot).
the only way i manage to keep it open, is to connect the charger. it seems to work, but if i call someone, the image is freezing, all buttons/touch will not work, but io can speak with the other person. and if the battery is low enough will reboot
oh, without charger it just close..with charger it reboot...
can it be a battery problem?

Ok I thought your Mainboard could be one of the first revisions. Had Pvt1 and my phone rebooted very often when I plugged it out of the socket. Now pvt4 has no problems.. Try another rom?

How can I change from Pvt1 to Pvt4? My phone rebooted very often too. I used SanDisk 10 class 32gb sdcard.

You have to replace the Mainboard with the latest revision. Send it to HTC, if you still have warranty. Mine was replaced for free due to warranty
