[KERNEL][09 Jul 12] GINGERBREAD s2w [2.6.35.14][smartassv2][sweep2wake] - HTC Desire S

This is a CyanogenMOD 7 based kernel for Android 2.3 a.k.a GINGERBREAD.
It is made for all the "stability" fans that are still using any Gingerbread AOSP ROM.
I have made this for personal use, then decided to share.
Enjoy!Features:
- Sweep2wake functionality
- SMARTASSV2 governor (my favourite) set as default
Download: View attachment sweep2wake.zip
md5sum: B16D93A776589947302BF524648A3909
Installation: flash in the Recovery
Issues:
- during the testing it occurred that after swiping to sleep the device is not going to Deep sleep which results in a heavy battery drain. My workaround is to use the free Screen lock and off app for locking the phone properly
- sometimes the touch screen is not responsive after wake. Unlike the ICS version here this problem is solved by pushing the Power button twiceThanks to:
showp1984 and his source for atmel touchscreen devices
Team CyanogenMOD and especially Nexx
Cyaniarb and his Tiamat kernel

Cool, thanks!

My mobile
Goes into deep sleep with no problems and screen look responsive

That's great. thanks for share.

Tried it on reaper, it's working but 8 out of the 10 times it's making screen shots instead of going to sleep... Don't know if it's the kernel or reaper?

The same here. Maybe the device thinks we are pressing power + home to make a screenhot.
Edit: If you leave out the back or menu button during swipe then it works, no screenshot is made %)

Hi guys
This is a part of the Reaper features:
Code:
- Added screenshot capability with Power+Home key combo (hold Power, then press Home)
- Added Search Key longpress override: Screenshot, Recent Apps, Power Menu (Reaper Control)
- Added Home Key longpress override: Screenshot, Power Menu (Reaper Control)
Since the s2w code emulates the same signal as pressing the power button (screen_state_off) it is possble that the device confuses both...
The kernel was tested on CM7 which has not these features implemented and works fine.
I have used Reaper some time ago but cannot remember are there any settings to disable the screenshot feature...if there is then your issue will be solved

Well, you should always know the capabilities of the ROM you use...
I just had a look at the settings, but couldn't find anything to disable the feature. But I added the "go to standby" button to the energy widget, so it's not a big problem. For me it's enough to power on the phone with s2w. So thanks for the kernel!

Actually my idea was the same - I have no intentions to upgrade the device soon, so I have to spare my hardware buttons

Works fine for me while set on smartassV2 even after swiping to sleep, the device going to Deep Sleep (tested with CPU Spy v0.4.0)

I assume(sorry if ignorant) that this kernel will replace the new reaper's kernel.
or not?
Sent from my HTC Desire S

Well the kernel is not an unlimited are of change. This one is based on the latest CM7 one that is heavily optimized. The only additions are s2w and the governor. No point of adding s2w switch since if someone does not use it he can go with the CM7 default or the Reaper one.
Actually I was considering a revision but there is nothing more to add

And I need external app for my camera.
Could my issues be solved using this kernels.

[Q] Phone freezing on camera standby

I just recently S-off, rooted, and put ARHD on my sensation. When im using my camera then while still in camera go to lock my phone, when i try to unlock my phone it seems my phone is frozen, like its turned off, without any power. I have to take the battery out to get it to power up again.
Anyone know what the problem is?
if you have custom kernel and it downclocks during screen off that happens. Happens to me before also. I guess the camera uses much of the cpu resources, not sure... that happens to me when i set the cpu to lower clock speed at screen off.

Since you are arhd gb rom I believe you are on faux kernel. Faux gb kernels have his own implemented system which does not allow you to turn off your screen while in camera. try to avoid doing that and you are all good. Or simply move on to ics. Its about time

Some kernels/apps downclock and change governor when screen goes off, if setcpu is doing it, superuser may not grant it permission for another few seconds when you try to turn on, causing it to lag, easy fix is if you just locked and want to unlock screen then press power button 3 times, will turn on instantly

Thanks for the answer. I did a search in the faux kernel thread and confirmed the same thing. I guess the HTC camera has its own power management system which interferes with the faux PM

General Questions about Screen and Battery

Hi There!
I got my wife one of these to replace her Motorola Defy.. She has a few questions I couldn't really answer...
1) She seems to be having problems with signal and therefore internet connectivity. All our other 6 devices wireless fine. It's running 4.04 Android Custom ROM. I read recently 4.04 users were reporting issues with the signal strength and wondering if I should change back to 4.03?
2) She says whites are not really white and when I compare to the Defy it would appear she is right.
3) She says the text doesn't look as sharp or crisp and again I am inclined to agree. I am not sure if this is a Pixel Density issue or a setting we can change.
4) Battery life is shocking. I'd say she is lucky to get 8 hours if she talks on the phone for perhaps 45 minutes a day. I am interested to know what a reasonable baseline expectation is.. Right now she is barely touching it.
Thanks for any assistance.
Hi,
I have been using ICS 4.0.4 as soon as it officially came out and I haven't had any issues with connection (let alone hear of any issues for that matter.)
Whites are definitely not as white as they are supposed to and thankfully there is a software modification called: Voodoo Control while allows you to adjust the gamma settings to change the saturation and tone of colours.
Regarding the sharpness, changing the gamma settings may help in this department unless you'd like to change the pixel density via rooting/flashing custom ROMs.
To be honest, when I first owned this device I would disgusted from the battery life I was achieving. 8-10 hours per day. However, I am able to last about 20-30 now after a few modifications. In 4.0 you can view which apps are consuming the most battery:
System settings > Battery
Battery saving tips:
- Turn down the brightness 10-25% (Also turn off auto brightness if you can live with changing the brightness manually)
- Turn off data when not in use (switch to 2G if possible)
- Turn off auto-sync (or sync less frequently)
- Turn off GPS when not in use
- Turn off the screen manually before putting it in your pocket
- Turn off autorotation
Screen brightness is the biggest culprit so I'd turn that down to a comfortable level.
Basically, the more features you turn off that makes your smart phone "smart" the longer the battery will last.

Matr1x kernel has been around for a long time and is the most feature packed kernel. It also has been tested to save the most battery life compared to other kernels through built-in undervolt.

Is Matrix Kernel voodoo compatible
Yes, it's compatible. AirKernel is another option. There are a few on the DEV section you might want to check. ROMs, I would say: Bugless Beast, MIUIXperience, CyberGR, Brainmaster ROMs, AOSP+ and AOKPBlue 1.1

I answered your question in another thread. The color and sound controls are in the same application. If the kernel doesn't support it, it won't show up in the options. The name of the app was changed a while back.

My phone is so HOT

My phone is very very very hot in games. Battery temperature reach 50 degrees. Is that normally ?
Even when it`s in standby is a little bit hot.
Maybe the problem is overclocking ...but i`m not a specialist....i want your opinions.
During real racing 2 my phone can get up to 115fh but cools down when I'm done.
Using latest bricked at 1.5 with slight overclock options.

My problem was that, during medium using...some pictures, messages, and calls ...temperature was somewhere about 45 degrees.
But now the problem is solved. The problem was caused by 3D and 3D GPUs overclocking. I returned to stock frequencies and now things are a little cooler.
Overclocking makes your phone hot. Just like a computer.
I found that overclocking the GPU makes the phone really really hot.

I found that my Sensation gets unpleasantly hot at the bottom of the screen even doing mundane activity like surfing the web. It's o/c'd to 1700 though so I can't say I'm surprised.
Has anyone established an oc that doesn't make the phone feel hotter in less strenuous use? I have a feeling it's going to be trial and error though.

its usually built into the ROM or flashed as an add-on tweaks zip. I was overclocked on Sense to 1.5ghz, but on AOKP I am actually running it at 1080mhz and everything is still smooth. the buttons do get hot tho because theres currently no option on AOKP to turn them off, but thats ok for me as I hardly ever play games on my phone so the heat is not an issue.

Could have just been the source at the time. I deleted it and haven't looked for it since. I guess I could search for it and redownload it.
I did end up starting over on a GB kernel though, didn't mess with the .config much this time around and gonna do it one slow compile at a time with one change to see when things go south
*edit*
Ok so from the looks of the source roman had changed 2 files when overclocking and undervolting and it was for global cpu voltages (faux code). After using the code changed in arch/arm/mach-msm/kconfig the phone bootlooped at the splash screen, but the change to arch/arm/mach-msm/acpuclock-8x60.c (faux code for 1.5Ghz oc/uv?) it boots just fine, but still at full speed no matter if setcpu is ticked to set at boot or not, and my guess is that's just is what it is, )90% of kernels boot at the speed on this device. Anyways that's what I did today trying to start as simple as using code that already works. Now back to the work week

Just from my observations, it seems there is something about a Sense ROM that causes the kernel to always boot at max speed of the kernel regardless of any settings in SetCPU or other cpu-clocking app. Only after the device is booted can you manually run SetCPU and then the desired speeds/options will take effect. I've watched it working, as soon as I boot up, I open SetCPU and just watch it... it starts out at 1.7GHz (the max on your kernel). SetCPU will then adjust it down to my desired 1.5GHz. As the phone goes through all its bootup steps (syncing, etc.), suddenly the speed will revert to 1.7GHz again. I can then reset it to 1.5 and it will remain there from then on. So, whatever it is that Sense is doing messes with the cpu clock. Non-sense ROMs don't exhibit this behavior, at least not that I've seen.

I'll be diving back into kernels soon.
My laptop is fried, but it'll run in ten/fifteen minute increments sitting on a handful of ice packs fresh from the freezer.
Once I finish migrating everything off of it to usb hdd devices I can start going through what I got.
Meantime, I'll browse through what I got moved onto my phones sdcard and throw some tips out. Been a while, but a quick review and I can throw down what you need to change for stable cpu table edits.
Don't want to steer ya wrong off the top of my head when it's been months since I've looked at it.
Definitely we need to get some stuff thrown around if a lot of old works were lost.

Like it or not, on-screen buttons are the way of Android going forward. Everyone has their own prefs. Personally, I do like customizable nav bar. Capacitive buttons do burn batt juice, maybe negligible but still use some batt. I have a nav bar power off button, saves the wear on the physical power button by at least half life. Instant recent apps button, no need to hold home button, no remap necessary. Sure it takes up some screen assets on the NS but worth it for me.

I just installed codename android 3.5 and it has hold back to kill feature that works on capacitive buttons...I'm rather happy with that ROM paired with air kernel
Thx everyone for your suggestions
The new codename has "hold back to kill" and a "kill all" button

Slim Bean has it. Let's you customize all of the capacitive buttons too. I missed not being able to search within an app.
