So we all have heard about the locked bootloader on the Verizon GS3. I was looking at the differences between the many GS3s, and I noticed that the US Cellular and Verizon phones had the same radios. Would it be possible to buy the US Cellular version for the unlocked bootloader and activate it on Verizon's network?
Verizon won't activate a phone that doesn't have their logo on it. The ESNs are completely under their control.
If you have a really good friend working at Verizon, they may be able to hook you up, but like the previous poster said, they won't generally activate any phone that isn't a Verizon phone.
What i been wondering is maybe they could take something from the us cellular phone to unlock the bootloader or something for verizon because they are pretty much the same radios
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
Again, no. They don't give a damn about the radios, it's all by the ESN. If Verizon doesn't have that ESN in their database, they will NOT activate it, period.
Also, for EndlessDissent, your "good friend" would have to be one of their database engineers, because a retail employee can not and will not add an ESN to the database.

Good to know. I didn't know they had a database and everything. I thought it would be more like activating a Sprint phone on, say, Cricket or Boost, but they just weren't supposed to.

This. At the store we cannot do anything about it. If you know someone that has a 4g phone you can try putting the sim card in the us cellular phone and see if that works. Normally when we activate a new sim card in the system we don't need to input the esn number, just the sim card number. Worth the shot. Let me know if it works. Thanks.

You completely missread his question. He asked if the phone was close enough to the Verizon version for developers to unlock a Verizon gsiii bootloader/ use that companies unlocked bootloader on a Verizon gsiii. Has nothing to do with ESNs

Yeah... I think you misread the question. Activating a phone on a different network is completely dependent on the ESN (which I learned a few posts ago). Also, his question doesn't seem to involve helping to unlock the Verizon bootloader at all.

My Verizon 4G LTE SIM Works with the US Cellular GS3
I bought a Galaxy S iii for U.S. Cellular used from someone. I was planning on selling it since I got it cheap, but i decided to put my galaxy nexus sim card in there for the hell of it. IT WORKS! But I warn you, it's not fully working. Here's what works:
Phone, Text Messaging, and pretty slow Data (NO 4G)
Doesn't Work: MMS (picture/video messages) 4G Data
I am pretty excited and am trying to figure out a way to get MMS and 4G Data working. For the price I paid for the phone, I'd say I got a pretty sweet deal on a GS3 that works with Verizon.

This is very untrue, I have my phones flashed from any carrier, to my network through a retail employee. Not completely sure how the process works, but I do have issues with MMS, (I have to use GoSMS for MMS) and I can not get support for my phone from customer service, as well as insurance, etc..
Although, Flashing it is the easy part, and activating it is the issue. The only reason I am able to activate is because he is a retail (Store front owner) employee with the carrier.
Flashing to Boost or Cricket is exceptionally easy with flashing and activation.

Try using GoSMS Pro, as I said (In my previous post) it is required for me to use MMS after I flash a phone to my network.

Can someone tell me how to flash US Cellular's Samsung Galaxy Note2 to Verizon?
I am also using a usc s3 on my Verizon. But that's right no 4g or mms everything else works fine just went in a retail store he activated me a new SIM and boom. I'm going to try the go sms for the mms. But is there ANY way to get 4g working can someone help me with that plz and Thx
Can't get go sms to work for mms still. Can I just flash a stock Verizon Rom to this phone if so can someone give me a link for 1 to use been working to try and get everything working for like 2 days on and off Thx
Bump
I once called Verizon to see if i could activate a flashed iphone 4s. They said no because they would need the ESN number in their database which it wasn't. However, he said if it was a flashed 4g phone with the SIM card , it would be possible.
Verizon Samsung SIII
ROM: Jelly Beans 8
THEME: Magnum Cream
I have a US cellular GS3 and put my Verizon sim card in it. the phone works fine, data, calls and txt etc. the only issue i have is the phone wont go to 4g. 3g perfectly fine and i know the bands are the same for LTE. and i have LTE coverage from Verizon in my area.. any thoughts?

Is it possible I bought a simlocked I9020A? Works fine on at&t but my tmo simcard wont work at all (no edge). I got it off craigslist but did a factory reset, so figured anythng the previously owner did should be undone.

If you're able to make calls with the tmo sim then it is already sim unlocked. Though I am not sure why you're not getting edge.

yeat I thought I'd at least get edge with a Tmo sim in. I use ATT in the US, the Tmo sim is my womans and was just to test it since since we are traveling to Europe in two weeks.
It won't hurt to check your IMEI and /efs
Sorry, didn't see that it works on AT&T :/
You should get Edge at least. Guess there's something wrong somewhere else. Talk to your carrier. If you can use some features it's not simlocked at least.

I have the same problem, but the other way around. I have an I9020T which does not seem to work at all with AT&T. I've made many phone calls to Tmobile, to AT&T, and to Samsung's tech support. I haven't found a resolution, yet. The last thing that was told to me by the AT&T tech support person this evening, was that perhaps I need a newer simcard - one that is fully compatible with this newer model of phone.
I'm also prepared for the possibility that the phone has a hardware defect, however I don't want to send it in for an RMA until I'm absolutely certain.
Samsung (after checking my IMEI) has told me that the phone is definitely sim-unlocked and usable on any carrier.
A couple helpful hints when talking to any tech support person:
Make sure that they cross check your IMEI number. They have a database, and if they can establish some facts about your phone that way, it can really expedite the process.
Also, be aware that tech support people step through flow charts with you, and they usually aren't actually very technically savvy. If you can get them started on a constructive tack - they'll find the right flow chart, and you might get a lot more help than if you simply call up and say "it doesn't work."

search around a bit. radio is subjective, two people with the same phone and same service in the same room will get different results with radios. best thing is try a few out and see if any are better for you.
Simple mobile uses tmobile bands therefore you only will get edge speeds, try the Att go phone sim from Walmart you'll get great speeds and maybe straight talk
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
The one issue with GoPhone is that if the SIM has been activated in a different phone, and less than 6 months have passed since it was activated, you will likely get an IMEI locked message. This doesn't mean there is any issue with the Inspire, simply that the GoPhone SIM is locked to the IMEI of the phone it was activated in.
I use red pocket mobile. In northern cali. Runs on ATT hspa plus. Not bad no issues. T mobile doesn't offer a 3g plan. Red pocket is 50-60. Might want to look into it.

The six month policy is for unlocking the phone to other carriers. you have it backwards, my friend. If you call them and tell them that you are changing phones because the one it was activated on was damaged or non functional anymore, they will send a code to the phone to unlock the SIM. I think they can only do that for a SIM that is locked to an Android. If it was activated on a non-smart phone, you can go to any AT&T store and tell them you want to change phones and they will do it.

Not sure what you found to be incorrect in my statement. I never claimed the gophone sim couldn't be unlocked to be used in the inspire, just that it is locked by default to the phone that it is activated in. Also, though what you say is true about being able to get it changed, by default AT&T personnel don't seem to be able to diagnose the problem, when you give them the error message. A friend of mine had this issue when he tried to use a gophone sim in a nokia smartphone, and after going to the AT&T store, calling them up, etc, he asked me and I told him his SIM was probably locked to the phone it was activated in. Once he knew this, he called, and they unlocked it. However, neither the store nor customer service was able to help him, until he told them what the problem was. I also picked up the inspire I am using now for cheap, because the seller tried putting a gophone sim in it, and it came up with an "IMEI Locked" message. He assumed there was a problem with the phone, and AT&T customer service was unable to help him. Knowing the issue with GoPhone sims, I bought the phone, and have had no issues with it. So, though what you say is true, you have to know about the gophone simlock issue, in order to get it resolved.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

Alright so, as the title says, bought it from Craigslist and it currently won't work on T-mo. The guy was on the phone with it before I bought it (saw him) so it obviously does work. Do I have to flash a t-mo radio or can I just factory reset and it'll be fine? I don't really mind not having root at the moment. It's on LeeDrOiD if that helps. Will post any other necessary info.
So you installed a T-Mobile SIM and it said it wasn't an authorized SIM? Or are you trying to connect to T-Mobile with an AT&T SIM? Otherwise it should work fine.

Weird. Is it an international One S, or does it say T-Mobile on the front? I've never heard of being able to lock a device to a new carrier...

the first thing I would do is head down to a T-Mo store to get a new sim card.
Yes, the SIM is activated. Been using it for about 5 years now, was in my N1, Sensation, and a flip phone for a while. Though I did get it cut for micro-SIM from a cutter (not done by myself). Perhaps it got screwed up? Though in the settings it can still pick up my #. And yup, it has T-Mobile at the top. Alright, I'll swap out the SIM and bump this up if that doesn't work.
More info: It keeps popping up to register with a network, and I select t-mo but it says "unable to register with select carrier".
Good chance it is blacklisted. People sell phones locally and then dont pay their bills on contract or report it lost or stolen and TMobile blacklist the IMEI. I learned my lesson. It happened to me twice over Craigslist. It will only work on ATT if it is. You can call TMobile or go into the store and they can tell you if it is.

I would almost bet that a new sim will solve your problem here. I remember when I got a new phone with T-Mo and still had a 6-7 year old sim card. I put it in the new phone and it would not work due to incompatibility with the new network specs etc. A new sim solved the problem. Let us know how the new sim works.

I agree.
Networks have changed a lot in the last few years. A 5-yo sim card is likely to be the cause of the problem.

Can I switch my verizon s3 sim card to a att one x?
I have looked up apn's and such but every time I put in an apn, then click save...it isn't there. There are no apns on the phone at all.
I have been on Verizon for over a year. I like their coverage but they are expensive each mo. I picked up this phone from a person who needed money, said the phone had been cut off because they couldn't pay their bill. They had unlocked it and rooted it before it was cut off. I can get on internet and use it as long as I am around wifi (except for phone calls of course) but I would like to get it to work and switch to Straight Talk.
When I go to settings and networks it says "Disconected because service is unavailable" I click it anyway and go apn's. there are none there. I make a new one and save it and it disappears. This is done when I have my verizon sim card in it. When I take the sim out I can't get to the APN's they are grayed out.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much...

This.
It will not work. Verizon uses a completely different network that your One X is not capable of connecting to.
Verizon uses CDMA for voice and 3G, which doesn't use a SIM. I've never used Verizon, so I'm no expert. But just doing a quick search it looks like the SIM is only for LTE. Plus, Verizon doesn't use the same band for LTE that AT&T does, so even LTE is not going to work on this phone.
http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/4gsim.html
As a rule, GSM phones will not work on Verizon. There may be some exceptions (such as phones that have both GSM and CDMA support). But the moral of the story is that you need to do thorough research before buying any phone that is not direct from your carrier, as failure to do so may mean spending your money on a phone that does not work at all on your network.
The phone will work on Straight Talk, as ST uses AT&T and T-Mobile, which are both GSM carriers.

Maybe a modem? Been scared to try it because I'm confused as to what will cause my boot loader to lock.

That might be it but seeming as how it's a straight talk phone you'd only be able to use a straight talk modem update, as least I would think that would work anyways

Been running good for a few days but I can't pull in 4G..I wonder if it takes more than just a ROM flash and APN changes. From what I've read, straight talk disables 4G on this phone. Anyone know what it would talk to enable it?

Seeing how it's a straight talk phone it should have LTE/4G enabled. Try calling straight talk maybe... Other than that I'm out of ideas

Wondering what it takes to make this phone a full Verizon phone. It runs off the Verizon towers, its running a Verizon ROM and recognizing it as a i535. What else would need to be changed? And exactly where do they disable 4G? In the modem or physical hardware of the phone? Maybe someone will help! I do not want to use this s4 anymore. Locked bootloaders kill me lol.

Buy a GSM unlocked phone in that case. I do love my old S3 but it was time to move on

Well I'm making the switch to straight talk today. Hopefully cdma workshop can get 4G working. I've searched and searched and I can't find any explanation as to why or where the 4G is deactivated. by the process of elimination, I've come come to the conclusion that it has to be in the physical hardware. I'm going to try one more thing before I start tinkering with cdma workshop. I'm going to try to flash a d2lte rom to see if that does it. anyone know of a lollipop d2lte rom?

I didn't find any with a search but If I come across one I'll post it here, the two d2vzw lollipop roms I seen are both lollipop but not & d2lte roms.
I think the issue with the straight talk S3 is indeed the hardware, they managed to remove the 4G option on this variant and the VZW prepaid version also

I'm wondering if the process they used is the same process page plus retailers used on 4G devices..because my girlfriend had a Verizon s3 that they had to flash to 3G so it can be used on pageplus..when she switched to a note 2 a few weeks ago they told her they offered Verizon's 4G coverage now and she would get it on her note no flashing required. Worked right outta the box. We took her old s3 and hooked it up for my mom. They said that it had to be flashed back to 4G so I'm wondering if straight talk flashed this phone to 3G only with flashing software..if so, is there a free program anywhere to do this? The CDMA workshop trial has never given me the outcome I was looking for.

About 2 weeks ago I was using this straight talk s3 on Verizon postpaid, not prepaid. I just flashed a Verizon ROM and setup the apns and threw my Verizon sim card in and it worked. It stayed in a roaming state but it worked fine. Calls, texts and data. I think I did dial *228 to get it to lock onto the network. I still have the line if you would like to see some proof

If you are saying that you were on Verizon because you had the Verizon wireless showing in your status bar or because it said it in your phone somewhere then no you weren't on Verizon, your phone showed that stuff because it has that stuff in your build.prop, that doesn't mean you were on Verizon, the only way to actually be on Verizon is if you actually setup an account with them and activated the phone on their network. Supposedly Verizon won't let you activate a straight talk phone on Verizon account, this device is not able to carrier unlock and that's what you have to do to actually switch carriers and use your IMEI on another network. It shows SCH-I535 because of the build.prop, all of that Verizon stuff and the i535 stuff can be edited in the build.prop, that has nothing to do with who you actually have service with, that's just there because its written in the ROM.
