Is Straight Talk my best option for 3g/4g data? - HTC Inspire 4G

Was given an Inspire tonight, and want to start using it with a prepaid plan. I WANT to use T-Mobile's $30 4g Monthly plan, but unfortunately I'll be stuck with 2g speeds, and that's not going to work.
After doing some research on different prepaid carriers, it appears as though Straight Talk is my best option. But even that has a bit of a caveat, since I want to stream Spotify regularly, and don't want to get kicked off and locked from my number because of the stupid TOS.
So, is there a better option than Straight Talk for data on prepaid carriers?
Thanks.

I think Straight Talk or AT&T prepaid are the only two of your options...

I use simple mobile but that would mean you have to use edge which is unfortunate... Other than that there isn't much that hasn't a decent plan for the money that I've seen.

Straight Talk. I heard you get about 3-4 mbps , and about a 2-3 gig throttle.

Anyone w/ an Infuse + grandfather data?

My mother got and Infuse yesterday and i was over at her house playing with it with my sim in. after i was done i took my sim out and put it back in my fuze (shudder). this morning just as i was leaving the house for the day i got a text message from AT&T telling me that "An eligible data plan is required for your 4g Smartphone. We have added an appropriate data plan. Learn more at att.com/smartphoneplans."
so i disabled data and when i went into my acct on the web when i got home, sure enough the only data feature options i could choose were the new tiered data plans. i had to put my sim in my old ooooooold tmobile MDA for an hour or so until it updated the imei and then i could go back and choose the unlimited data option.
is this normal? if i upgrade to an infuse will that cancel my grandfather'd status? has anyone else grandfather'd updated and kept their data plan? if so how? and if i upgrade through best buy or amazon at the discounted price will i be allowed to keep it or do i have to go to an att store and pay the full upgrade price?
This has happened to a few people on the forums (lost the unlimited when it switched them to 4g) but it shouldn't. Call 611 or go into a store and they can fix it for you. You can have unlimited 4g with you grandfathered plan its just apparently sometimes putting people back to the 2gb.
I was able to keep my unlimited..
sent from Infuse but miss my captivate on cont. 5.5.... One day this can be as good...
They make it a hassle, but you can keep your unlimited data.

I got the Inuse at Best Buy and they let me keep my unlimited data without any issues. Before that I had bought the Atrix at Best Buy and had no problems either. The rep just said he was going to switch me to unlimited 4G cause the 4G plan is a bit different.
thanks all of you
the issue that occured is that our at&t systems have different classification data plans.
ie: one for blackberries, one for general smartphones (android/palm/symbian/winmo ect), iphone, and hspa+ devices. the fuse is a general classification smartphone so the message was saying that when you put your sim card in the infuse as it is a hspa+ phone, your data might not work correctly, hence the text message to change your data plan. if you go into a cor store, any rep should be able to continue your grandfathered unlimited status.
No issues here, I still have my unlimited plan...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
If they try to do that, call customer care, let them know you have grandfathered unlimited data, they will file a case to change it back. They "accidentally" did that when they provisioned our sim cards for 4g when my wife and I got our Inspire's...
Hell yeah if they remove it I woukd transfer my four family plan to Sprint, now sprint has the same customer service as verizon up date according to recent survey.

When you call ATT tell them it's called SmartPhone Personal.
Tell them you want to keep the unlimoted plan. Some reps may say you can't but you Can. Dont ttake no for an answer.

Ok so i duno if im getting the rite plan now. Looked online and im getting Smart unlimited..$30 .. But under that u can choose something with 4g.. Also when i click on smart unlimited this windows pops up. Whats "gold list"
It was no hassle keeping my unlimited plan. She asked and I said I wanted to keep it. Done deal.

It still possible to get an unlimited plan even if you weren't grandfather by iphone or something? I only had the option for 200mb for $15 or the 2gb for $25 and no option for unlimited.

ok, i have a question for you, i'm planing on getting an infuse on upgrade, selling that and getting a gs2. if i go back to the $30 unlimited plan when i upgrade after getting the gs2 would i be able to switch back to the cheaper unrecognized imei data plan that i'm on now?
if YOU don't choose to change to another plan, you stay grandfathered. I am still unlimited. If you choose to go to another plan because its cheaper and later decide to use tons of data, you cant go back. If your plan was automatically changed, let CS know. they have the ability to override and re-authorize unlimited.
If they switch me to the H+ unlimited from regular old unlimited will I be able to still use my sim in my HD2? Thanks!
Also has anyone bought from Amazon. How did you go about keeping your unlimited? Just sign up for one of the available plans and then call and have it switched back?
Grandafthered plan
I have grandfathered $30 real unlimited on infuse - only thing changed is 4G addition to it. I understand that they need to classify plans somehow but i do not believe that 4G changes anything related to connection speed. I live in Portland,OR area and eventhough ATT coverage is good localy there are still no real 4G speeds. I tried Inspire, Atrix and now Infuse and none of them went over 2.5Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload -EVER.
All their bogus stories about 4G cards and 4G dataplans are fairytales --- GSM phone needs provisioned (active) SIM Card of any type, proper APN setup, and reciever able to decode given 3G /4G frequency bands. With such combination you can connect to any GSM network (provided roaming is enabled too). So you can switch SIM cards from phone to phone regardless of data plan in their system.
I was landing on PDX airport in 2009 from Frankfurt, had my N95 with Vodafone prepaid SIM in it and as soon as I turned it on, it autoconfigured and locked to Tmobile 3G network as I still had some money on it to use data and calls. I was also using one ATT SIM card with same data plan (switching to and from ) Iphone3Gs, HTC Touch Pro2, Nokia N97 and unlocked Motorola Defy. Never had single issue...
On the other hand, after being AT&T, Cingular, at&t customer for 10+ years, I am starting to wonder is their service generally worth the money I pay every month.
My bill is for 4 phones;
unlimited family text,
1400min,
real unlimited data plan for Infuse,
real unlimited data plan for Iphone,
2 unlimited data for non smartphones for kids ($10 each)
Total: ~$220 every month....
I was recently looking into Virgin Mobile plans and they give $40 unlimited calls, messages and data. For $25 you get unlimited calls, messages and 20 megs of data (for kids...and my kids use barely any data)
Now that would cut my phone bill about ~$100/month ($1200/year)
Problem is that my dear wife would let go of the Iphone only from her dead cold hands...and she is using it like it is Apache server ~ 10Gig/month
I know I am going off topic but regardless grandfathered or not, my data plan on ATT costs only $10 less then all unlimited package on Virgin mobile.
I am aware that they do not have fancy phones as ATT but honestly ATT does not have a near selection of good phones as Verizon or T-mobile...and lesser data speeds too.
Now I wanted some opinions on my thoughts to switch carriers (and just to let you know I never used anything but GSM since i got my first cell phone in 1993 in Hamburg Germany where I am originally from)

[Q] $10 upgrade to 4g??? WTF!!!!

Got a call from T-mobile today saying i owed $300+ for text messaging fees, apparently when i bought the g2x from amazon, it upgraded to 4g data plan and removed my data+unl text android plan, got things cleared up and restored my old data plan back, but the Rep said if i wanted 4g data service there would be an extra $10 charge a month on top of my Android data plan, so it wold of came out to $40+ instead of $30....
First off this aint Sprint for an extra 10 surcharge on 4g, I have a Regular Vibrant and the G2X and both hit the same speeds, so i said no to the 4g data plan and keep my android data/text plan.
Has anyone else heard of this?????????? any Tmo reps care to comment????
Thats odd. T-mobile charges the same for 3g as they do for 4g
Thats what i thought but according to the rep i spoke too, to get 4g data plan I had to drop my data/unl text plan and get the 4g plan (no text) and i would stay at $30, or keep my data/text and add 4g speed for 10$ more....
so according to the Rep
$30 3g data/unl text (my OG plan)or
$30 4g + $15 unl text
No charge for 4g

Back when I got my daughter her G2 she came from some other phone that had some kind of bundled text messaging plan. The store I bought the G2 from didn't add text messaging to the plan with the G2. We've had unlimited texting the several year we've had the account and it's never been an issue before with a new phone.
So the next month I got a $1700 phone bill. My daughter texts a lot.
After the red haze went away, the pounding in my chest subsided, and I picked myself up off the floor, I went back to the store. They immediately saw what happened and called in and fixed it. No problems since.
Not exactly your situation I know, but they should fix an honest mistake.

Just go with your OG plan. There's no difference between 3G/4G. It's marketing. They don't have a way of controlling it per line anyways.

My thoughts exactly, just say you'll stick with 3G. The 4G on T-Mobile is HSPA+ so basically 3G with a turbo. But as far as I know there is no way to switch off HSPA+ without also switching off HSPA, and then you'll get EDGE speeds which is not what your paying for and can raise a stink about it if that does occur.

Ya I agree with everyone else, that rep must of been dumb or confused or maybe they did change it but I highly doubt that, when i switched over to 4g it was no price change. The rep told me it's basically the same plan, just phones that can do 4g will gt the 4g speeds and those who can't stay on 3g, that is all
Will Unlocking the phone let us use the 9.99 web2go plan on it without upgrading to the $30 plan?

Ignore this troll. He's sort of right though. In the strictest sense the "4G" branding in the US is for marketing only. It doesn't actually meet the speed requirements set by the ITU. If you want to read more look here 4G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yeah I get 11 down 2 up myself. It's much faster than Att and feels more stable than verizon or sprint (friends and family complain...is it me or do CDMA phones seem to have more robot voice issues). Yeah these are 4g speeds...at least my phone has beaten my buddy's Evo 4g in a speedtest.net. Yay cell phone drag racing!!!!

I like TMO's customer service. Maybe 1 out of 5 calls, I get someone that stumbles around, but for the most part.. I do receive knowledeable and friendly people that have been very good to me.
Except last week, I got a new hire? I said, "I cannot find on my bill at my.tmobile.com a way to see my itemized breakdown of charges for apps." The rep: "We can see it here, do you have a pen to write them down?" I said, "I want to know where I can physically see it myself on my monthly online bill." She said, "Well, they are...<started to read them off>." lol. "Ma'am, I want to know where this is itemized on my online bill so I can see it myself." Her, "it's on your paper statement." Me: "I don't get paper statements, I said I'm on my.tmobile.com trying to find the itemized listing." She puts me on hold.. comes back. "These are the ones we see.. <she starts to read them off again>." lol.
It was like an Abbott and Costello skit. Finally, while on the phone.. I hit the "print bill" link... and the page that came up shows everything broken down.
"Never mind ma'am, I found it myself." Her, "ok.. would you like upgrade?" me: "What kind of an upgrade? Any free upgrades?" Her, "upgrades to your service." Me: *click*. lol
its just 3g+...LTE isn't even real 4g

Frankly, when you can stream video at full 1080p resolution and still have bandwidth leftover, I really don't see the point in hemming and hawing over the fact that you don't get "real" 4g speeds.
thats why I'm sticking with tmo, besides their 4g is faster than my at&t home fastest speed available wi fi

that old data plan is grandfathered so for unlimited web plus txt it would work out to $40 with the new options. Just a mistake on her end. It requires a supervisor/loyalty to put that unlimited web + txt plan back on.

Carriers

Does anyone know of any other Gsm carriers that I can use my unlocked t-mobile sensation 4G on?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
GSM or CDMA? Search google for you country operators.Ah what the heck ill do it for europe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators_of_Europe
In the U.S some good options are simple mobile, and straight talk. Both will give you "4g" data but at different price points.
Straight Talk is $45 for "unlimited" talk, text, and data. The problem with them is that they are known to completely cut you of and kick you of the network for "excess" data use. Some people report this coming as soon as 1gb of data. Most say 2 gb. If they do kick you of the network it is virtually impossible to get your # back so tread with caution. If you do chose straight talk make sure you order a t-mobile sim.
Simple Mobile offers two plans. $40 for unlimited talk, text, and"3g" data but most people say that this"3g" data is more like 2g data. They also offer "unlimited" talk, text, and "4g" data for $60. Most people say that they trottle you if you cross 2gb of data.
There are other options that run on att's network but you wont be able to get 3g or 4g data with them.
Check out Howard Forums for more info. They are great site for carrier information. I can't post a link because im new here but just google search them.
Hope this helps!!!
You order a new t-mobile sim card through t-mobile or straight talk?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
You order the t-mobile compatible sim through straight talk. To find out the process to activate and transfer the # i would call straight talk. I don't have them so I don't know the specifics about how to activate.
Thanks I appreciate all that information.

Want unlimited everything? Data, messaging, and calling? Read on

For this to work you must have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and be running on T-Mobiles 4G network. (If you don't know how to do that please know, there is a way to get 4G on this phone on T-Mobiles network if you have an unlocked device[you can get an unlock code on eBay] read around the threads) so let's get started.
So if you have this crazy awesome device your going to want the best for it right? And at amazing prices huh? Well to do that I reccomend doing the following join T-Mobiles Monthly 4G plan the $30 one. This is what it offers you...
-Unlimited data at 4G speeds but after 5GB's of usage your throttled down to 3G or Edge can't remember...
-Unlimited Text Messaging
-100 minutes
So why if its only 100 minutes why is the tread title saying I can get everything unlimited?
Well using the downloadable Skype app from the Google Play Store you can subscribe to one of there packages for unlimited minutes like the one that is $2.99 a month for unlimited US and Canada calling
*So at 4G speeds calling is perfect
And in total what does your monthly bill come to? $32.99 + tax WHOA! That beats the $100 a month crap!!! So I'm just here to share this with you guys and I hope you find it helpful and before you tell me I posted in the wrong place....I didn't. This is specifically for the Skyrocket...and well this thread is "skyrocket" so yeah. Enjoy!

If you want the same thing on rogers without using Skype, hit me up. I have access to unlimited voice plans.

$100 a month is nuts, and I thought Rogers was expensive. I only have 200 min a month and never use 2 of them.
or you could use grooveIP and pay 4.99 once, after the first month at 34.99, you'd be at 30/month.
or u could just use bobsled and make calls for free lol.
45-50 dollar monthy is the best plan unlimited everything including minutes, i believe it has 2 gb unlimited data but you can bypass the data throttle with different apn settings.
Lemme know when you AT&T users can convince AT&T wireless to allow you to drop your minutes plan while till being able to retain our number, texting, and data. I'm at $100 per month as well (minus my 20% corporate discount) with the lowest minutes plan, unlimited texting, and unlimited 4G data.
My service provider is Tbaytel in canada, they are partnered woth rogers. For $50/mo. I get 200 daytime minutes, free evenings and wknds, unlim text, and 5gb of data (much more than i'll use in a month since wifi is so readily available.). I get this plan because I'm a "student" (which means I'm friends with the guy that works there.). Normally this plan would be $110, so I figure I'm not doing too shabby.

I get 200 mins, nationwide my 10, unlimited messages/pic/video, call display, voicemail, vvm, evenings and weekend at 6, free Rogers one number services (Skype for free) and 6 gigs of data. $62. And then 40% off of that. My fiancee has the same plan. Our combined bill is about 75 or 80 bucks.
Oh, and they keep giving me this Rogers mobile TV thing that I never use.

Anyone got any tips for someone traveling internationally? Att charges an arm and a leg to call text over seas.
Edit, maybe Google Voice? What would Google voice cost to text/call people in England while I'm in England, and to text/call people in the US while I'm in England?
Edit 2: gvoice doesn't accept international texts so that's out. But AT&T wants .99c a minute, and .50c a text. Which is insane. I could unlock my phone and go with a local gsm provider, but even local providers will charge me more for texting back to the US. Any other suggestions that don't need data? Can I forward my US gvoice number to an English phone. So text/calling to the US is free, and then use a prepaid local sim for local stuff?

Buy a Skype international calling plan there probably 3-5 dollars for England. And for texting use a texting app over wifi or 2G/3G/4G

For those of us not covered by T-Mobile, you can also look into StraightTalk. They've recently offered a "bring your own device" service, where you purchase the sim, and can use any device.
$45+tax gets you unlimited calling, text, and data. (Although I've heard about a 3GB soft cap on the data)
Nice part is that you can either Select AT&T or T-Mobile as your carrier. You just tell them which SIM you want when ordering. Put in the APN from their website, and you are good to go. They even allow you to port your number.
[Edit] Since I can't post links, just go to straighttalksim[dot]com
Of course it's prepaid with no contract. You can use the "auto refill" option on their website so you never run out of credit..but who cares since it's unlimited anyway. Worth a look if you own the phone and don't want to pay $100 for service.

Figured it out, needed a T989 modem. However, 1 thing the OP left out is, that plan of 100 min, unlimited Web and unlimited txt is only valid for phones purchased from Walmart. You can't get a Sim from Tmobile store or their website, has to be from Walmart with one of Tmobile's pay as you go phones.

Well then there lying cuz this is what I did. I bought a Skyrocket 4G off of craigslist unlocked it using a eBay unlock code. And bought a t mobile sim off of there website hers the link it has to be the T-Mobile Monthly 4G Activation Kit http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit its $1 right now and has like $3 Inside. So its pretty much free. When you get it you activate your phone with that.
This plan has been discussed on slick deals for I think over a year now. Tmobile 3G and 4G is essentially the same thing. You will be throttled to edge after 5gb. Also you need to buy the sim online NOT in store to activate online. Else you will need to call and specifically request this plan, only new customers are eligible.
For a full proof quick turn around, get the cheapest phone at walmart and sign up for this plan and switch the sim into your phone.

This has been angering me for two days. Been to three different walmarts and cant find the $30 dollar activation card everyone is talking about.
Edit- Finally figured that out. I was also only getting edge. I tried flashing a T989 modem, and still only get edge. hmmm. Wondering if I didnt waste my money.

Going Data Only on This Thing?

I have an htc inspire and when my contract expires in November I am thinking I would like to go data only on it . I don't make many phone calls and like the idea of having something like a smartphone in my pocket that i could check my email or google maps when i would need it but don't want to pay a fortune for a contract that i don't need. Would the t-mobile $30 a month for unlimited 4g and 100 minutes work on the inspire? Btw i'm located about 30 miles south east of chicago if that is any help. Want to know what my options would be on something like this. Also I have a playstation vita 3g which i never use the 3g part. would it be possible to take out that sim card and use the data plan on that?
The inspire does not have T-Mobile 3g radios. You will only get edge with T-Mobile sim. So if you can live with that then go ahead. There is straight talk they sell att sim unlimited tlk, txt, around 2gb of data for 45. Also get postpaid coverage with roaming!!!!

so if i went to canada like i do once or so a year i would be able to use my data at no additional charge?
