I recently switched over to CM9 Alpha 5 and I'm loving everything about the ROM except for battery life. I'm actually getting worse battery life than stock, and I know why.
On stock MT4GS, when wifi calling was enabled, 3g data as well as the cellular radio would be disabled. I use wifi calling because at my house, and at my work, I get no signal. Since switching to CM9, I am seeing that the cellular radio is running at all times, even though I'm in wifi calling mode 80% of the time. Battery stats is listing the phone as having no signal 78% of the time, which is pretty accurate. As we all know, the cell searching for a signal is murder on the battery.
I've tried airplane mode, which allowed me to disable the cell radio and data, as well as turn wifi back on, but for no dang good reason, wifi calling complains that it becomes disabled when airplane mode is on, even if wifi is running and connected.
I took a look at juicedefender, but this doesn't give me the option to turn off the cellular radio, only to turn off mobile data, which I can already do.
Is there any app or method that can be used to disable the cellular radio altogether, but still allow me to use my wifi calling?
I know T-mobile needs to be able to see you phone is still active to use WiFi calling. Disabling the Radio might block T-mobile from seeing you have active service.

I use it from inside a basement in an area where I get 0 bars when walking outside. Plus, it's gotta be connecting to t-mobile somehow when using it, so that it can connect up to the t-mobile voice service. Plus, battery life was better before for the very reason that it wasn't constantly trying to search for signal when I was on Wifi calling mode

Use the code for testing menu.
Pretty sure I remember there being an option to turn the radio off in there.
Worth looking into.
I also dumped the dialing codes into my dev reference under misc, it's the post right before restoring to stock.

I have been searching for this since I got my EVO. Over at android forums MrGreg has posted an app in the market that allows forced roaming on the EVO. I can confirm it works. I am in no means associated with this guy. This is something I have been waiting for since my Pre. Below is the link
http://androidforums.com/application-announcements/162379-app-roam-control.html
I was so glad to see this. I have been asking for this since I got my Moment, and then for the EVO. I jumped on it as soon as I saw it and it does work as advertised. I am quite a happy camper now!
Still waiting for the price to drop...
Not seeing it in market and app brain can't find it either, what's up wit dat?
sent from my iPhone 4...........destroyer.
For those who are having trouble finding it:
Get AppBrain and the Fast Web Installer, then just click Install on AppBrain.com from your computer.
For those with CyanogenMod 6:
Congrats, already have this, for free, built into CM6: Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>System select.
Apologize for the noob question, but why would you want to force roaming?
If you live in an area with poor Sprint signal (say, -100dB) but there's a strong roaming signal (-70dB Verizon), the phone will cling to the Sprint signal and wear down the battery (anything below -100dB, and it starts to really hurt).
If your signal is really bad (like at my work), you'll wind up constantly switching back and forth between roaming, and Sprint, causing you to be disconnected from the network, miss calls, get delayed texts and voicemail alerts, poor audio quality on calls, etc. The worst part, is that if there's ANY Sprint signal over -120dB (aka, if it's detectable at all), your phone will automatically jump from the roaming network, and onto Sprint's, and then back again when it loses Sprint's signal. In other words, even though you've got a strong roaming signal that you're attached to, your phone keeps on scanning for Sprint, and keeps on jumping to it whenever it can, draining your battery like mad.
At my work, there's a Verizon tower a 1/2-block down the road, and I get around -80dB when roaming, but otherwise get -105dB or worse when on Sprint, just because the frequencies used by Sprint are poorer at penetrating walls. So, I looked at my battery stats since I was only getting about four hours of battery life, and saw that my Time Without Signal was anywhere between 20-50%! I switched to Affiliated Networks in my settings (aka, roaming-only)
The trade-off is, you can only get 1X data when roaming like this, not 3G data. To get 3G roaming, you'd have to load a Verizon PRL, which you can't do on an AOSP ROM, since you need the EPST app.
I am on my 3rd device in 3 days. First one was rooted, second one was not. This current one is also not rooted as well.
Unless I am very unlucky, I am going to assume there is a definite issue with the network configuration on this device. Status says I have 3 bars of 4G coverage, however I cannot connect to the internet at all.
Network Signal Info says I am on UMTS with a -93DBM, data is connected. However nothing will load. If I put the phone into airplane mode and then turn airplane mode off the networking comes back online. Speeds are slow though, barely able to perform basic mobile web browsing and watching youtube and such isnt possible. Too slow an too long to buffer.
This doesn't only happen at my house, it happens in other areas as well but it does happen constantly at home. I a not a heavy data user on my account, 1-2GB monthly, so Tmo says they arent throttling me. They have replaced the SIM every time with the devices as well.
Suggestions? If I cannot figure this out soon I am going to cancel my service as I cannot pay for a service and phone that just doesnt work. Tmo seems stumped. They just keep replacing phones since I am within my 14 day return/exchange period.
However, 3 devices all having the same issues sure seems to either prove the phone has an issue, or m general area of Tmo service.
I live in downtown Tempe, AZ.
Your wifi works?
I have the same issue in my house... I have a weak signal and 4g drops down to 2g which is terrible.... 4g downloads are 3Mbps, but uploads are under 100kps
I changed the network mode to wcdma only which helps significantly. 4g drops, but quickly returns...
Give it a try...
I'm having the same issue here in Orlando. I've had 2 phones now (first one was just a bad unit) and both have had horrible network connectivity and reception. I take my SIM card out and put it in my 2 year old MT3G and it gets perfect reception and fast data transfers while the G2x is choking on network transfers.
Go complain here in LG forum. This is software issue.

have full bars but cant download anything. just sits at waiting for data connection.
We really need a baseband modem that works better. My bars goes to zero then to edge and then to 3g constantly. Any time it switches between the connections then the the bars goes to zero and it says there is no conection. Also noticed that 3g connection fluctuates very bad while doing a speed test.

T-mobile only has 3g connection avaliable where I live, of course it says 4g on the phone but in reality it is only 3g.

I wonder if there is an issue with our network in Arizona?? I live in Chandler, and work in Scottsdale. my data times out ALLL THE TIME. Both here at home, and at work. Same with my text messaging. Literally, I do exactly what you do with the "airplane" mode. That's the only way to get my data and text working again (besides restarting).
Here are the issues I posted in the LG Forum:
http://www.lgforum.com/forum/boards/carriers/t-mobile/topics/few-issues-with-g2x#26861
(first issue posted is what you are talking about)
I dont think this is a regional issue. Downtown Minneapolis here, and I cant get it to stay on wifi or Edge/4g for more than a few minutes at a time. G1 has no trouble and shows strong 3g while my sisters mt4g shows full 4g. 4g/E symbol just flickers on my g2x leaving me with no connection. I can connect to wifi fine, but even with wifi sleep set to never it still disconnects every few minutes, and has to be toggled on/off to reconnect. Until toggling it just sits flickering 4g/E with no data connection.
I've never seen my Evo drop a E/4g/wifi connection and struggle to reconnect once in the year I've had it. My g2x does it almost every time I pick it up.
Did you try going into Mobile Networks in Settings and changing the mode to WCDA Preferred or something? That'll stop the flip flopping. That's what I have it on and that's what the phone came with out of the box. Also try Auto in that menu.
Hi everyone
I have an issue, when I'm on my office the network signal isn't strong so when my One S go to "NO NETWORK" after it don't go back to network.
When the situation is this I can't go to airplane mode, change operator (from settings), the only thing that work is shut down and restart (no fastboot).
Anyone else have this problem?
Maybe is a software bug?
I have the Paul recovery and su
EDIT: More info
That don't happen every time that the phone go to "no network".
I think that happen when it a weak signals and are under 2G network.
there are users with similar issues, I only use 2G networks. If i want to do a bit of browsing i will manually change to auto mode, but other than that i always leave it at 2G..
hopefully there will be a radio upgrade soon that should fix this problem...
I'm suffering from the same behavior!
I'm still with the original ROM with no ROOT so I contacted HTC about it yesterday.
I got today their reply today:
"On your phone, kindly go to settings > mobile network > Network mode, kindly change the network mode and check how the signal will respond to each of them.
-Kindly try a different SIM card, to check whether the issue is with the SIM card or the phone itself.
- Soft reset for the device by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.( Note that soft reset erases any unsaved data.)
- Safe mode(which disables any 3rd party application which might be causing conflicts for your device.) for the device by Switching power on , then press and hold volume down when the quietly brilliant logo appears on your screen, you should see 'safe mode' text written on the bottom left of your home screen.
- Factory data reset, kindly backup your data before proceeding with this step please as you will
lose every data on the phone's memory.
Please go to Settings > storage > Factory data reset > Reset phone."
I haven't done anything yet and I didn't notice the 2G issue you mentioned.
I also haven't got this issue for the last 48 hours but did encountered it twice (!!!) on Sunday while driving across the country.
I'll try having the Network on 3G only and see if that matters although the area I leave in is not with good 3G reception.
GSM is 2G
WCDMA is 3G
i use GSM only unless im using the net
I'm aware to the 2G-3G difference
I'm on WCDMA preferred so my phone tries to be on 3G.
My phone also suffers from the 3G<->H data connection jumps while the desire wasn't having any with the same provider (different SIM of course).
sorry, My bad !!
i understand what your saying now
I cant confirm much as my provider doesnt have 3g signals in my area
If i try to use 3g at my home, I have 0 bars thats why i always use 2g
I switched to 3G only (since I have most of the time 3G and surly wants it for the data rate).
I know I have on my way to work and back places with 2G only but I'll give it a try for the coming days and reply.
BTW, just few minutes ago, while having 3G active for sure (before the 3G only switch when it was still on 3G preferred) I couldn't make any phone call although I had 4-5 bars and data connection was running.
Two days ago I tried to change my sim.
Before I had a cutted microsim, now an original microsim and the issue is still present.
Yesterday I had this problem only in afternoon, not in morning and only where the switch from no network -> 2G -> 3G is very very frequent.
In all other times out from office I never had this issue.
I also changed SIM with no help, stayed in 3G network only with no help and observed that when such a network crash happened, GPS reception is also disconnected!
I had no coverage situations with the 3G only mode which recovered, but what we are facing is a network "crash".
Our situation was escalated to technical support of HTC after I wrote them all the data and they tried to solve it over the emails w/o success.
Same problem for me. I tried only 2G, 2G/3G, only 3G, but no way..same problem..i hope an update can solve this..
I just bought my new One S from T-Mobile yesterday and everything appeared to be okay but now I can barely get it to hold a signal. Forget throwing it on GSM only because it will have signal for a whole few seconds before dropping it. I also am having Wi-Fi issues as well. It just intermittently drops the connection there as well... Not a great start!
whether im imagining this or not im not sure, But for me it seems like, When the Network signal increases, the WiFi signal drops, And when the WiFi signal Increases, the Network signal drops...
ive been noticing this for over a week now, So it cant just be coincidence..
I dont think my (or our) handset is faulty, I just think theres a pretty big bug in the ROM, and no matter if you switch ROMs they all use the same base at the moment..
This phone has great potential. But HTC need to be listening to us and release some updates. !!

I noticed the same exact issue last night. My phone will go to full signal before dropping whichever connection. I'm just glad this phone can handle staying on 4G without draining the battery like crazy although I can only imagine how much further it'd go with 2G.

Exactly the same here. But I had a different WIFI issue - WIFI won't drop but stay connected - even if I am far away off the AP.

that one is also a known bug.
On top of that, WiFi will sometimes stuck at "error" status with no ability to turn it on...
All probably related to the same network chip driver or "Radio"...
I have same network reception problem. When I am in a poor reception area it loose reception all of a sudden and takes a while before getting the signal back. I often toggle flight mode to force network detection. I also think the reception bars don't reflect reality; sometimes it seems I have good 3G reception but cannot surf the web. I fear it is a critical bug. The phone seems unable to handle correctly signal fluctuations and protocol changes (GSM, 3G, HSDPA).
I'm colletting more data about this problem.
First of all I don't have any wifi issue, or maybe I don't see this.
I have a modem with N standard and one with G standard and nothing of this have issue.
About the network issue in this days I never have, only when I'm in office and the signal suck a lot.
Q: Anyone that have Tmobile/mod rom with 1.70 RUU have this issue?

I don't have wifi issue at work with a powerful 802.11n network AP but experienced occasional fake/unstable/disconnect wifi at home with a poor AP which operates on no-one-knows-but-definitely-not-N network. I don't really bother too much cos I can always turn wifi off and on to reconnect.
In terms of 3G/H signal switching problem, yes, a bit annoy especially when playing online game on 3G but accessing internet is fine just need to sometimes wait a bit longer.
I am on international unbranded version in UK.
I've the same problem in France about 3G/2G and wifi on international unbranded version.
I have a new Galaxy S6 on 5.1.1, never screwed with.. I am having an issue where when I am on WiFi, and then leave WiFi coverage, mobile data will not turn on until I put the phone in airplane mode and take it back out again.
This is VERY annoying. I have disabled, reenabled and disabled the smart switch feature (checking for quality of wifi before using) with no luck. I've rebooted, cleared cache, and am about to do a factory reset. Having already spent the time to move in to the phone, that is not a desirable thing to do.
The problem is consistent on both 3G and LTE network modes. Phone calls still work, as does SMS mode text messages (VZW Messenger fails back when data isnt available, and gripes about it to me). a 1x phone call in non LTE areas wont even trigger it to work. The Icon next to the signal will say LTE or 3G, but no arrows will appear under it.
I'm at a loss.
As an aside, I'm getting pretty damned mediocre battery life too. Doing nothing with the phone from 6AM till 11AM nets a 20% loss. Generally, the phone gets through the day, but i've yet to hit a busy day with it. Android System is listed as the culprit in battery management. Location Services disabled. WiFi on, full bars 3G, no LTE where I see this battery life. (Work) Tower has EHRPD enabled for LTE hand off though. Could the phone be on a constant hunt for LTE?
I have been having the same issue. My phone, my wife's, and my son's are all doing the same thing. I have talked with verizon and they said Samsung needs to push an update. I have contacted Samsung and they told me they have not had anyone report this problem. The verizon community forum, https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/900309, is one of a few that talks of this issue. I am getting frustrated that Verizon employee tells me it is Samsung's problem, Samsung says there is no problem. Mine started after the last software update. Verizon suggested a factory reset and cache wipe, which I did and this did not help.
I'm hoping someone with a pixel 3a on sprint can help. When I am in airplane mode with wifi calling on, I am draining battery under "mobile network standby". This is an issue since I live in a poor cell area. I downloaded the GSAM app and it shows that the phone is searching for a phone signal when airplane mode/wifi calling is on. I talked to google and they said the phone should be replaced, but I don't really want to get it replaced because the phone is great other than this issue and I already have a screen protector on it.
I am still wondering if this may just be how Sprint wifi calling works with the Pixel 3a. Can anyone else try the above test on GSAM and let me know if they are having similar results with the phone searching phone signal in airplane mode with wifi calling on?

Sorry I am on AT&T not Sprint but just a thought, have you tried turning off Developer Options > Networking > Mobile Network Always Active ?
Edit: this probably won't work with Airplane Mode active, but it's worth a quick test.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I already have this set as off, so no luck there.
Even though you are on AT&T and not Sprint, if you have some free time and don't mind trying out the test, let me know if your phone is different than mine. I'm not sure if its just my phone specifically, if its a Sprint issue, or its a pixel 3a across the board issue.

Here ya go. Not sure if 2hrs is enough time for the test, but this is what I have.
Also I too live in a poor reception area and use wifi calling heavily. I keep my data and voice on and just have wifi calling toggled on all the time. I get incredible battery life.

Thanks, I really appreciate you doing that! Interesting, the app also shows your phone radio being on in airplane mode, with a % of battery drain, albeit small. I'm now thinking this may be a universal issue with the phone. I bet that if you put your phone in airplane mode with wifi on but wifi-calling off, your phone radio on GSAM would be zero (not be active).
Happy to help ??
That app is cool too. I might have to keep that one. ?

Absolutely, you should also give it full access through ADB, so "app usage" shows all of your apps instead of just lumping them into one bucket.
Perfect.
