[GUIDE] Changing the PRL on the Galaxy S III - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

For anyone interested in changing their PRL, the method is as simple as ever.
This is on a Sprint phone but should work with any CDMA carrier.
*I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR DEVICE*
0. Make sure you're on a Touchwiz ROM. This can be stock or modified, as long as it's Touchwiz.
1. Be rooted!
2. Find your MSL using this handy guide over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745888
3. Make sure you have downloaded the phone's drivers onto your computer.
4. Open your phone's dialer and type *#7284#"
5.PhoneUtil should now be open. Click on "Qualcomm USB Settings" and select "DM + Modem + ADB." Remember to change this back after you change your PRL.
6. Plug your phone into your computer; let your phone recognize the phone.
7. Download your preferred PRL from the internet. I usually use 11115, but you can use whichever one you find best.
(Verizon users, obviously choose the appropriate PRL for your carrier. I used a Sprint one.)
8. Open "Device Manager" on your computer; click on "Ports" and see which COM port your phone is connected to on your PC.
9. Use the program "CDMA Workshop" to connect to your phone by selecting the correct COM port, clicking "Connect," and then clicking "Read."
10. Go to the "Security" tab and put in your MSL into the box under "SPC." Click the "SPC" button and click "Send." It should say that the phone is unlocked.
11. Under PRL, click "Write" and select the PRL you want to switch to.
12. It should say that it successfully wrote; exit the program and let it reboot the phone when it asks.
13. Enjoy your new PRL!
I have been told by several people that a simpler method works using only your phone ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660740), but I have not had a chance to try it myself.

I guess PRLs are probably more of a Sprint issue (just because we generally roam much more) but Verizon users may choose to use older PRLs that they may have found worked better for them, or perhaps use a modified Alltel/Sprint mixed PRL to improve general coverage when going out of Verizon's coverage zone.
I'm not completely familiar with Verizon's PRLs as of yet, but will look into them. I would now but I'm on vacation .
I do have one PRL on my computer that will prefer to roam to Sprint if there is no Verizon reception available (which, believe it or not, actually happens sometimes). When I get back from vacation I will attach the file to the OP.

You can do this with QPST, however why would anyone on Verizon want to change their PRL? The only other networks you can roam onto are slower and drop calls frequently.
If you insist, I'll PM you how to do it with QPST.
OP:
Why is this in the development section? It's a guide. Plus you already have it posted in General and in the Sprint Development. Since it works on multiple devices, consider just having one OP in the General section. It makes it easier for us and for you to check up on.

This is posted in development because in the Sprint development forum guides and how-tos are allowed. I have already requested that the mods delete the one on general, especially since this only works on CDMA.
I'm on vacation out West and actually get six bars using Sprint as opposed to the friend I'm traveling with, who gets none on his Verizon iPhone. I guess it really depends where you are in the country.

P.S. Tell your friend to update his Profile and PRL by going into the settings and he'll get reception.

I'm not sure if my PM sent or not. It's being very "buggy" I'll just post it here:
How to Update PRL Manually:
You must have your respected device's drivers installed prior to starting.
1. Download and Install QPST
2. Open QPST Configuration in the "QPST" folder under Programs
3. Disable debugging on your device
4. Open your phone's dialer and type *#7284#"
5. Switch to "CP" or "Modem"
6. Plug in your device to the computer
7. Click on the “Ports” tab and “Add a new port”
8. Select the “COMXX – USB\QC Diagnostic” and click ok. If you don’t see a port, uncheck the box for "Show Serial and USB/QC Diagnostic ports only" and add all of the USB/Unknown ports. One of them should show an active phone.
9. Click “Start Clients” on the top of the program and open Service Programming
10. Select your device
11. Click "Read from Phone" and enter "000000" (or your MSL if 0000000 doesn't work)
12. Click the "Roam" tab
13. Click "Browse" and select the PRL you wish to use
14. Click "Write to Phone"
Phone should reboot with the PRL you specified

I couldn't get QPST to recognize the phone no matter what I did, so I used CDMA Workshop. You should be able to find a free (legal) “demo" version of it online.
And he updated his PRL before we left Las Vegas to see the national parks, he still had no service while I had about 5 or 6 bars.
Although most of the places I'm going to out here have no service for all carriers from what I've seen lol.

Should work with QPST. I've never had an issue with the program itself not recognizing anything.
What are you running Linux or Windows?
I'd just install Kies and to be safe also install the drivers online. Then read step 8. A LOT of people were freaking out over nothing.

I'm not sure this is quite relevant in either carrier's LTE space, as PRL updates are now handled automatically when the LTE radio activates (it's how GSM does things, and LTE is a GSM derivative).
For example, on Verizon LTE phones, *228 does nothing at best and smokes your SIM at worst. In most cases, getting a PRL update is nothing more than just rebooting your phone.

I'm using Windows; the program recognizes it in a COM port but can't determine the device and won't let me edit anything for the phone as a result.

The PRL I'm referring to only affects CDMA coverage. This method only refers to a method changing the CDMA roaming, as there is no LTE roaming anyway (and no need for PRLs).
I mean I could be wrong about this since this is Verizon and I'm referring to things I know from Sprint LTE phones, but I know (almost for sure) CDMA roaming is still relevant because voice and texts require CDMA coverage.

When using QPST, Generic CDMA is sometimes sufficient to do simple tasks.

Yes and the PRL affects CDMA coverage. Unless you never reboot your phone, flashing PRLs would be sort of useless, unless your in the one spot in the whole country Verizon doesn't cover.

But the newest PRLs are not always the best PRLs. I know on Sprint that sometimes people will report better coverage using an older PRL, so flashing an older/modified PRL could be beneficial.

Manual PRL Update Nexus S 4g (Hybrid PRL)

Hello All,
Was wondering if there is a way to do a manual PRL update similar like the Evo or Epic? Reason being in my current location the hybrid PRL fits best for me. So i was wondering if someone knows or may share if there was a similar was to apply a PRL?! "THIS IS WHAT MAKEs MY EVO THE BEST PHONE EVER"
This has the potential to help many Nexus S 4g owners such as myself.
Roam Control Does not fix the FACT THAT I NEED 3g Data as it only works with 1x speeds. I wish there was a fix for that. BUT the only other alternative would be to apply the Hybrid PRL for better 3g speeds.
bump, Usually I would not even do this, but it is important if anyone has any incite on this matter. I am sure there are people that would benefit, WOW 76 views! and not 1 post lol...
Tryed conncecting to cdma tools?

See if there is a modem driver for nexus s. Use qpst or cdma. Maybe it will see the phone. From there u can push a prl file to your phone.

after you select you network dont go back. go back to home directly. that should make it stick. next time when you go in there it should show you what you previously set.
Would that really do it? Doesn't that just change how the system uses the ota prl? I think he needs to manually change the prl itself. He is right that HTC has a beautiful way to do this.

I just successfully flashed a prl using these instructions here...
check post #1
Look at post #5
I wish that I would not have succeeded though bc my data is slower and even though some threads say if you are unhappy "just update your prl in settings" and it will revert. Well mine did say it updated by the prl version stayed the same. So I am not sure.
And a restoring a back up does not effect your prl.
Was successfully able to use Qpst to flash hybrid PRL as well I did a quick write uo in the gen. section last night after i was finished. Thank you all for your help!

there are 3 different prl's to choose from. the OP recommends 000001 first. and then the others if this one doesn't do anything for you.
I found the latest Sprint prl and flashed it back. p01115

*#2263# / Invalid MMI Code

I'm currently using CM10 Chopstixs - Alpha along with Tmob blaze radio. I'm trying to use the *#2263# entry on dialer to check what radio bands are what. Every time I enter this on my dialer I get two responses.
1.USSD code running
and then
2. Connection problem or invalid MMI code.
Is this dialer entry dependent on Radio firmware, Rom or dialer?

Not yet, I don't understand the relation between the command and the radio firmware. The command is to change what certain bands are doing, I believe. So if the command works does it have to work in conjunction with the radio installed or is it used ndependent of the radio firmware?
Edit: Just tried with "Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip" and "Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD.zip", same problem.

Well it seems the problem I'm having using the tmob radios with my skyrocket is that even though the task bar is showing "H" my download speeds are very slow when running a side by side test with my buddies T989 using Speedtest. This of course leads me to believe that one of the bands are not being utilized correctly. Unfortunately, without the service code I don't know how to check it?
Any ideas would greatly be appreciated. I'm reading myself blind here but no one seems to know for sure how to do this. Everything I've read pretty says "Oh well, if you have "H" on your task bar you must be good. Well it ain't so, at least not here!
BTW, I'm getting a very sporadic 2 to 3 MGPS compared to his 5 to 8 MGPS on the download and I don't even wanna talk about the upload.

More Confused
Install SKYICS and of course *#2263" works but differently depending on which tmob radio installed. By that I mean there are different entries which also leads me to believe that the default network band selection comes as part of the radio firmware. Every time you flash a radio the defaults change.
Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip has the following options with Automatic being the default but not starred (*).
1.Automatic
2. Wcdma Band Preferences
3. GSM Band Preferences
4. LTE Band Preferences
5. Add Band Preferences
6. Wcdma/Gsm Prefernces
Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD.zip has the following options with Automatic being the default but not starred (*).
1. Automatic
2. Wcdma Band Preferences
3. GSM Band Preferences
4. LTE Band Preferences
Why there is a difference I don't know, but the bottom line was that trying to mix and match prove to be fruitless and in many cases simple knockout 3g/4g and force the phone to E(edge). The only way to fix that was to select Automatic at which point it put an * by the entry signifying it was the default. And after repeated Speedtests runs it never was better than 3 MGPS on the download compared to the T989 stock at 6-8 MGPS.
If the modem hardware is truly the same then it would seem that the problem lies between the ROM and the Radio firmware. Very confused at this point.
Now I'm wondering if a Tmob Rom will run on a SKYROCKET????

One of the things I've notice is the phone is constantly changing between UMTS and HSPAP. It's seems to do it frequently during an upload or download which completely interrupts (stops) the process to switch bands. This of course bring data transfer to a halt sometimes locking up Speedtest. The other thing is when I reboot the phone I'm not sure what the default preferred network type is. When you enter *#*#4636#*#* you have a lot of network options but I don't know which is the default set in the phone and I don't know what if should be for Tmob?
Here are the options;
1. WCDMA preferred
2. GSM only
3. WCDMA only
4. GSM auto(PRIL)
5. CDMA auto(PRIL)
6. CDMA only
7. EvDo only
8. GSM/CDMA auto(PRIL)
9. LTE/CDMA auto(PRIL)
10. LTE/GSM auto(PRIL)
11. LTE/GSM/CDMA auto(PRIL)
12. LTE only
12. Unknown
I don't have a clue!
Try number 1, wdcma is hspa(4g) click end
then click auto then end, reboot phone and test
Edit i see auto is not an option

Ok first a little house keeping. In CM10 using *#*#4636#*#*> select "Phone Information", scroll to "Set preferred network type" hit the drop down and select the one of the options I listed above and just hit the back button until you exit out. The good news is that your selection is saved even after rebooting. The bad new is if you change radios you have to start over. The next piece of bad news is there are a lot of choices that seem to have different effects when used in conjunction with System Setting>More>Network Mode. So far I've tested quite a few and there is definitely a difference. My best speedtest result so far is with;
*#*#4636#*#*>Phone Information>Set preferred network type>LTE/GSM auto (PRIL)
System Setting>More>Network Mode>LTE/GSM
I manage to get 4.4 mgps on the DL and .9 msps on UL. Still no where near a T989 and please keep in mind I haven't tested every permutation. What this problem really needs is someone to take a look who's real savvy with networks????

Ok first a little house keeping. In CM10 using *#*#4636#*#*> select "Phone Information", scroll to "Set preferred network type" hit the drop down and select the one of the options I listed above and just hit the back button until you exit out. The good news is that your selection is saved even after rebooting. The bad new is if you change radios you have to start over. [Q] sch-i535 on t-mobile

So here is what I am looking for... i have a Verizon SCH-i535, and what I am looking for is someone who has flashed the stock tmobile rom and changed the bands within the phone its self using the hidden menu (netmonitor app) to see if they can get more than just edge data... I have it flashed to AT&T right now and am using a friends T-mobile sim card that we cut down to fit into the SCH-i535 GS3... it seemed to sync with the towers and get mms.. text.. calls... and internet... just not 3g... I would like to know if someone has found a fix to this issue...
Thanks for your time.
Why not just flash the Verizon Jellybean Rom (Cleanrom or Jellywiz) since global mode was enabled in that Rom? Then drop your tmo sim in.

You know I had not thought about using the global mode on verizon.. I will have to give that a try... do you know if that will allow for 3g on tmobile?
Useful thread so far, but I have a several questions.
I currently have a Verizon Galaxy S3 SGH-i535 with a T-Mobile prepaid sim card (unlimited everything), I can call and text, but cannot get any network access.
I'm currently running Clean Rom 5, settings on Global. Is there any way I can enable data, preferred 3G? [due to that T-Mobile will get 4G on Verizon phones next month).
On CM10, I get Edge and can receive text, but cannot send text. Tried APN settings, etc. Is there a fix for this?
I have tried everything, but no luck. Any suggestions is appreciative

So what I did is i unlocked the bootloader... rooted it... and then flashed the AT&T stock rom on it and then plugged in the TMO sim card and then changed the bands to GSM auto. and it picked up edge... I was able to get access to the network with data... but the only catch was that it was slow as hell... as it was only edge. I am still working on programming to get the i535 on the tmobile bands... thus far I have not been able to get the phone on 4g or even 3g yet... I will keep you updated though.

have you tried using the hidden menu in the dial pad at all??
There is an app out there that will get access to the menu and allow you to change everything in the phone... but be very careful with this app as it can and will brick your phone if you do not know what you are doing with the app..
Netmonitor --> look for this on the google play store
To change the bands to at least get data on the phone, follow the instructions below:
1. install Netmonitor on the S3
2. open the app
3. hit the menu button
4. select field test
5.select UMTS
6. Select DEBUG SCREEN
7. Select PHONE CONTROL
8. Select NETWORK CONTROL
9. select BAND SELECTION
10. Select either AUTOMATIC or GSM Band Preference
* if you choose automatic the phone will look at the sim card and go from there to get the phone on the network to get data on the phone.
11. Select GSM ALL
This is the thread that I am following at the moment to get the phone on HSPA+ or 3G.. If you have anymore questions then please let me know I will do my best to help you out.

I have not tried that yet, but just right now, I got successful on connecting with Data by changing my APN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34632097#post34632097), but fairly still slow G speed. Hoping for HSPA+ or 3G too.

Hmm, one more thing:
Is there anyway to make this work on CM10 or AOKP? Due to that global setting/APN setting is not available on these ROMs. =/

I have not messed with custom roms just yet I am working with stock roms and rooting and unlocking bootloaders right now... I will see if I can find them time to load a CM10 on my s3 that I am using for development and get back to you with the results here as soon as I have them... I am not for sure if I am going to be able to get to it this week as I have alot going on but I will try and get to it.
Thanks for your support.
In the mean time, I will see if the CM or AOKP team can implement these settings.

hey guys sorry that it has taken awhile for me to get back to you.. so I flashed the TMO rom on the I5 and got the same results just edge. I think that I am going to try using bobloblaw1 suggestion and flash the verizon leaked jellybean rom and then use global mode to be able to see if I am going to be able to get more than edge...
Here is a guide if you do not know how to flash roms on your S3 here
greetings, all.
i have the same problem that you are describing. running CM 11 Nightly (but problem also existed on VZW stock & CM 10.2). i have read all the forum's about this topic, but as of yet there seems to be no SURE fix to get anything faster than Edge data from T-mobile.

Manual PRL Flashing

So I have seen this mentioned in a few threads but I wanted to strart a thread totally dedicated to this...
Sprint and other CDMA provider require a PRL (Preferred Roaming List) to identify which towers to connect to, including towers to roam on. They release various PRLs based on type of account, business or personal. Business accounts generally have more towers set up for VZW and allow users to roam more freely. I'm not looking to abuse this but it definitely helps in situations where I can't get a Sprint signal. Before the Sprint bashing starts, I know the coverage sucks right now.
On many touchwiz Roms I have been able to manually write a PRL file by renaming the PRL file to test.PRL and calling the write PRL function of the dailer by accessing a ## menu and clicking the write PRL button.
I have looked in all of the known dialer codes and menus and can't find a way to flash a PRL manually. Can any developers / hackers figure this one out? I will be glad to help in any way I can and would even be willing to pay a few of bucks for the app if app development is required. Thanks!

I am currently taking a look through the data/data/com.android.provider databaseses to see if I can edit the PRL manually as with how I needed to add the "dun_tether_required" to bypass carrier blocking of Hotspot....

I understand the concept of PRL lists, but why do GSM carriers not use something like this?
It would also be nice to force Verizon roaming. Any one find a way to do this?

This is how I got tethering to work on lollipop. Might be what you need..
$ adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0
https://pmf.silvrback.com/fixing-tethering-on-android-kitkat
Just to clarify, I still use the tether fun required 0 entry in Global under settings.db
But originally I was looking for a way to sideload "PRLs"
Initially LTE (4g) was lacking in my area and better 3g (Evdo Rev A) could be obtained based on PRL. But LTE coverage has improved and I no longer need to worry about a PRL to improve 3g performance.
On Sprint I have been using Hangouts Dialer to do simultaneous voice and calling by using data and/or WiFi for phone calls. Allowing me to still browse/use data at the same time.
Have you tried this method?

I will tomorrow.

[Q] LTE problems?

Been on the iPhone for close to a year. I'm tagging out! Coming back to android and the ultra or maxx has been the device I've set as my decision. However I'm a tmobile user. Maxx has the battery life I need so I want to clarify before I pick one up what any glitches of the device may be on the network. I've been reading with the kitkat update there is some sort of issue with the enabled lte and not being able to utilize SMS/phone at the same time as lte data? Is this true? If so any possible way to remain on H+ without activating lte or inputting apn settings? Or has this been rectified? Lol.....rectified.
Any input anyone has is appreciated. And yes I know. I should get verizon. I've been with tmobile for 12 years. I just can't beat their price right now and I live in an lte city. When I go out in the county it's a different story. But one day I'll jump ship. Maybe intervention is required. But right now I wanna stay with the T.

"LTE Thunderbolt" on the play store will be your best friend while on T-mobile
Works wonders with moto devices, you can choose which exact signal the phone should look for (LTE included)
Great phone period. On vodafone with it right now, used that app to ONLY look for HSPA+ and everything is golden Lemme know if you have any other questions, but that app should fix ya up
Awesome thanks bud. I was a but concerned about that whole hiccup and was making me second guess getting it, but the phone seems to be the best choice for me out of any available android phone. Hopefully this will get worked out. Do you find it a little inconvenient to switch signals or do you just stick with the hspa signal permanently?

With the KitKat update. It's pretty annoying that I can't make phone call and send text message when it is on LTE. Gotta switch back to 2g , edge before sending text , make call. There is no option to disable LTE to stay on H+ .

That's disappointing. Unfortunately I just spent 400 dollars on one. Welp I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed. Glad I didn't trade my iphone off yet in case. Well I hope this can be tweaked. =\
You can switch the phone into gsm only using phone info. If lte is disabled you'll be fine on KK until they fix it. LTE/GSM works fine on 4.2. I'll link a copy of phone info to make the change. Please don't modify other settings as you can potentially permanently damage the radio. You'll get HSPA+ in refarmed areas. EDGE everywhere else.

Thanks for this! Are the odds pretty good that this will be taken care of in a future update? I feel like I don't expect it since it's not a verizon critical issue. Would this be taken care of in a future KK update or firmware? Thanks for your help so far everyone
I had talked to a contact of mine at Motorola and they were unaware of the issue til I brought it to him. It's on the list of things to fix.

You're doin it wrong GSM only disables the LTE radio.
If I'm understanding arcanexvi's post correctly it instructs to switch to "gsm only" and not "gsm auto", though it's circled in the illustration. Hard for me to speculate though until I have the phone in hand.
Lol you beat me to it. I can see the confusion though since gsm auto is circled in the photo. It's like sitting in the drivers seat getting directions from the passenger and they say left and point to the right lol. I'll let ya know how it goes when I get the phone. Thanks bud.
