I have a at&t Samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket i727 and once I connected to kies it tells me my phone does not support software update via kies I'm on stock 2.3.6 never rooted or flash any rom I'm wondering if when at&t rolls out ics how will I be able to update via kies if its says I can't update via kies and I don't think it will be a ota update since I'm sure the update will be to large to do ota does anyone else have this issues? Or does any one have an answer.

I wouldn't worry about it. The Odin version will be up on sammobile within hours, and a rooted and stock base within hours as well. Plus we already have official Rogers ics, aokp, cm9.
You can manually run it in kies anyways.

OK thanks i didn't really understand how that worked for the update but u made it clear.

Thats the rumor. My guess is they did because a Jelly Bean update is pending.

I never saw LH2 via OTA, try Kies. I got it via Kies.
No longer available through kies.
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Strange... when I connect my device to Kies, it reports my LH2 as the latest available firmware. So Kies knows about it.
I'am on LH2 (made the upgrade a week ago). A friend of mine bought yesterday his note, we tried to upgrade through kies, said his LGA is the latest - LH2 no longer offered.

I currently have leaked version vrblk3. I only flashed thru odin, nothing more. Am I able to download Verizon's ota update?

So you don't have CWM or TWRP installed?
No, I don't think so. All I did was copy tar file in odin and flash. Nothing more.

Just got the notice in Colorado
I have CWM installed. I guess I need t remove it to install the OTA. What's the best approach?

Why bother? The leaked version and the OTA are the same thing.

This! Leaked is now official...the build number didn't change so there is nothing to gain by taking the OTA.
I understand your point. Even so, if I were to decide to flash back to stock in order to update ota, I am able to just put my phone in odin mode and flash the stock ics Rom over my leaked vrblk3 Rom, correct?

Yes. Depending on which Odin file you flash, it may fully wipe your internal storage (including all your pictures, etc.), so make sure you read before you flash and backup your data accordingly! If you really want the OTA though, why not flash the Odin file for the JB OTA? That is the same thing as going back to stock, you'll just be fully updated already.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Ok, thank you. And as far as using the odin file jelly bean, I new nothing about it. I'm new to this custom stuff and it seems that I need to keep everything up to date manually. If there were automatic updates and what not I'd be more apt to running custom roms.

Hey guys. So my family members and I all have the same phone type, the AT&T skyrocket. Now, I use custom roms so this shouldnt matter to me, but my other family members arent getting the update OTA. Is the update only obtainable with Kies or is there just a problem between the AT&T server and their phones?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Only kies.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Do you think they'll roll out the update anytime soon through the AT&T servers?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I don't think they ever will. It'll just be over kies.

Text msg notifications are rolling out but the update is through Kies, if that helps clarify.

Uh I wouldn't want to grab that thing ota. Way to much to go wrong especially battery issues. If some moron decides oh hey yeah lemme DL this with what battery I have left over my 4g network. Dudes battery drains over the course the phone reboots to try and install said update phone dies and bricks. Kies ensures that A. You have a good download of the update package and B. Since you are connected you have juice to update the phone. This is CYA stuff not an oversight. I've seen tons of noobs on plenty of phones "the ota bricked my phone".

Not sure what are the differences between AT&T and Rogers but with Rogers I got my last 2 updates ota. I may be a newb but I'm not stupid so I made sure I had enough battery before proceeding
But it does not matter anymore now that I use custom ROMs.
So ota depends on Samsung and not the carrier?

I believe I read somewhere Samsung makes the update and the carrier determines whether to roll it out in your area.. working deals with Sammy...but don't quote me on that.If you do a search... that would be interesting to know for sure
OTA vs Kies

Yeah I know that the carrier controls whether an update will be released or not. They have to put all their bloatware and test it!
I was asking for the OTA vs Kies part. I thought that Since ICS (4.0), everything was available from OTA. But I think that you can always choose to update via Kies. I did not know that an update could only be released via Kies (disabling OTA). Not sure either.
Anyways! As I said, for me, not important anymore!!

I was able to check for start downloading the OTA from AT&T after already getting it on kies by reflashing to stock ICS. I stopped the OTA though because I wanted to redownload it in Kies to get the tar from the temp file for backup. The funny thing is that I had to do it twice because I messed up trying to find the file before it disappeared. It disappears after flashing is complete so you have to reflash ICS and do it again. Or u can take the easy way and download it off the web...but where's the fun in that?
Similar?

Well since it's not important, I would guess, your data provider haha. Just going from Kies showing my number along with model number, I would assume they checked if I had service alongside checking my SIM card. Maybe check without a SIM and see what happens?

Yea pretty much what I searched for when looking for the temp tar. "UCMC"
I have the ATT skyrocket rooted and unlocked when I first got the phone in 2011, and is on 4.04. I remember that the post said that I must unroot if I want to upgrade the rom OTA from ATT. Is there any other way to upgrade to the latest stockrom without unroot? I cannot find the post I originally referenced to root/unlock.

^^ what he said. Just get the .tar file from sammobile.com and flash using Odin. You will lose root after this process.
If you want to update using kies (the update is not ota. You have to use kies. ) then s long as kies detects your phone and you have a stock recovery, you should be OK.
However, I believe that you will loose your apps and data with both the methids.. So just use Odin

Thank you very much. I should be able to re-root after the upgrade, correct? Or the lastest 4.1.2 cannot be rooted yet?
I have problem with Odin before, never got anything done with it. Let me try it this time.

Yes you can root the new jb using the same procedure as before.

If your rooted why not just flash a stock rom with the newest update. That will save you the trouble of dealing with Odin.

Trouble? Odin is as simple as place file in pda and click start. I don't see any trouble there....

I meant it more of an hassle. Plug in Odin then uproot do the update then reroot. Just seems so much easier to flash a stock base rom.

Why would you unroot to do the update via Odin. I believe your logic is flawed here. Although I do agree an install would be expeditious via recovery, your argument is flawed.

Just FYI - I was on rooted stock, and just did the update with Kies without unrooting. Now i'm on JB unrooted as a result.
been trying to update to 4.1.2 firmware on and off and no luck
all stock no funny business
connect to kies and there is nothing for a update
do they have a odin package available
thanks
The update is done OTA only at the moment. Check for software update in settings.
Not really
I updated mine to 4.1.2 through kies
