Hello all,
Saw a few other posts to overheating when not doing much or anything but recently noticed a problem with using the GPS while charging will cause it to over heat and no longer charge. The battery will get in excess of 47° C when this is happening and idles at 33° C.
Seems mainly with GPS though, on call with wifi and bluetooth running at 35° C.
I am using a HTC - T-Mobile myTouch charger with 5V-1A put so is not a high output charger.
Has anyone else seen this?
I know I am not having any luck with these phones.
First one had problems with when using GPS would loose data connection till GPS was discontinued.
Second (this one) has the above problem and had a exchange sent for about 4 hours wouldn't turn on no matter what I did. After I had exchange sent turned on fine and hasn't happened since.
Third (sent back already) had the same problems as the first one will loose data and cell signal when using GPS and will come back when disabled but not till then.
Honestly, you can't expect a phone not to get hot while charging and using GPS. GPS takes a lot of power, also with the screen being on the entire time it takes up even more.
Almost any smart phone should be able to handle 47° C, I wouldn't suggest it for long extended periods of time though.
Most android devices have heat alert that pops up if your phone gets too hot, I'm not sure if ours has one. I've read on a couple of posts of phones running around 125 Fahrenheit, without a warning.
As for the Data kicking off while using GPS, I don't see why it would, mine doesn't. Not sure what to tell you.
Are you running a custom rom?
I do expect it to get hot.
That is normal as the phone is using alot of resources to do that function.
But it should not get to a point where it stops charging.
I have had the Amaze, Sensation, MT4GS, and G2x all have gotten warm but not really a problem where it caused it to stop accepting a charge.
I always remove it from the d30 case and set i cup holder so not trapping heat to avoid the problem.
A few times I have gotten it that hot with it not plugged in.
I only see the "overheat notification" orange blink green blink cycle when it is plugged in charging. If not charging not a problem there.
No custom rom or anything 100% stock and locked yet.
Data connection lost is a weird one.
My Girl has the same phone with no problem there and the 2nd device don't loose data connection just that it heats up really good. Don't know about heat on hers since she don't use GPS long enough to require a charge like I do.
Just the first and third phone that was sent to me have this problem with lose of data connection. Can't use it long enough to see if it over heats :-( lol
I completely skipped over the not charging part, after it gets hot.
I'm going on a trip in a few days, I'll see if my behaves similiarly.
I would just take it back and try again, no data while using GPS is pointless, unless its just a simple setting somewhere I've never seen.

Just tried a different charger and it got up to 45°c too
Both car chargers work fine on my other phones so don't think is that.
I use mine for GPS a lot (just made a trip from Atlanta to Knoxville ) and had my phone charging playing music and navigating and yes it got hot but it never stopped charging or did the blink cycle .. only time I saw anything remotely close to that is when I left my g2x outside while I was playing ball and saw a notification saying its too hot to operate but nothing on my s

I've been using my GPS for the last couple of hours now, been downloading maps for when I know I don't have service also along with navigation.
I'm ay 45 Celsius right now. I'm using a fm transmitter with a built on usb outlet on it that doesn't put out the needed power to keep my phone charged. If I was using a real car charger work the correct output I'm sure I would be a little more hot.
No data problems so far or anything else.

yeah the last few days I have been using it didn't break over 45 much but seems like I need to keep the AC pretty high to accomplish that.
Currently here in PA we have had a few really hot days for us which I know is much toward other states but has been in the mid to high 90's.
I think just the heat from that with windows down is not enough to keep it cool enough.
If the phone gets arround 45 c will be border line and seems like 46 is where over heat protection comes in and stops charging.
As a test I put my sensation in a thick rubber case left charging from 70% and gps that got up to 48 c but never stopped charging. Normally I never ever leave the case on while I do that but wanted to see in this case what would happen.
So it seems like just a HTC One S thing that if reaches a certain point to stop charging to help prevent damage or something.

i always have a data connection issue while using gps i have ever since i got this phone so that custom rom talk is bs this phone drops data all the time while using gps at the same timeand will not return until the gps is off
My phone also has the loss of data issue while using GPS. Shortly after the data loss it will also loose GPS signal and for me a reboot is the only solution

So...I use internet sharing as my primary source of internet as ?I am on the road a lot. Recently my phone has started to stop charging at some point while using internet sharing. I am trying to figure out why, the best I can find online is it is a heating issue and the phone stops charging at a certain temp. Should I keep it in my freezer at home wrapped in a cloth or something? Really annoying when I am working and the phone dies and I have to go out w/o a charge. Anyone know if it could be a radio issue? Thanks in advance,

Its definitely a heating issue.
You can try different radios and see if that helps.
I have had some radios get my device really hot, compared to others.
Keep it by an AC vent or when it overheats, unplug it, cool it down and plug it back in.
what app are you using for internet share? im using the HTC Internet Sharing app that recently came out and i had the same experience BUT i figured that its because its using WIFI and also connected to data soo i believe its normal, what i find is that if u go on simple sites or use an IM without surfing the net, it wont overheat as quick, or if lucky it wont at all, the reason is the amount of data transferred to the phone then it transfers (via WIFI) it to the wireless pc at a fast rate which uses alot of CPU, which can be the blame for the over heat and mysterious non charge even if its connected to the charger...those some of the things thats causing ur problems, and btw yes sometimes keep it next to an AC, could lower down the temps a little bit
I have had my Atrix 2 8 days past the 30 day mark. And recently the phone has started getting really hot. Not when I am using but when it is just sitting.
I have checked to see what app or process could be running and causing it. And I have found nothing. This is what I have checked so far
Wifi is off
Bluetooth is off
GPS is off
Here are the only things using my power
Cell Standby 33%
Phone Idle 31%
Voice Calls 9%
Motorola Services 4%
Display 4%
And it gets smaller from there. I can set the phone down and walk away and come back to pick it up and it is smokin hot with 40% of the battery drained.
I sent an email to Motorola support on New Years. I have not heard back from them. I also contacted ATT and they want to give me a refurbished phone. Which I have refused due to last phone I did with them. I got a scratched up dented phone in trade for my flawless phone. I told them my phone has been used for 38 days and is flawless I want the same back.
I liked the phone at first but I am about at my wits end. Any ideas what can be causing this?
My phone gets really hot when I leave the camera app running.
Droid incredible 2 running cyanogenmod 7 nightly 134
I just went into my task manager and the only things that are using my cpu are the Android System at 25% and Home Screen at 1%. And my battery just dropped from 15% to 5% in 20 mins sitting with the screen off.
Download an app called watchdog and see if you can trace down a rogue app maybe. Also setcpu gives you an option to see the battery temp. Would be interesting to see what the temp is when you're saying its hot. Mine generally stays around 32° with general usage.
I am trying your suggestion and running into the second issue I having. No data. I just opened the market and it says server error. Tried 4 times. And the little 4g symbol is white not blue and I have 3 bars of signal.
I love android and I love the look and feel of this phone. But this thing is seriously p*****g me off.

I run into that issue at work sometimes myself and usually its due to spotty coverage. I have a airplane mode toggle just for it. Toggle on and off and usually jumps right up to 4G in blue
Update: Motorola never responded to my email. AT& T never called me back. So I called them yesterday and asked them why they didn't return my call like they said and chewed them out.
I tried the watchdog application and it never alerted of any rogue apps yet the phone remained hot.
So the end result was ATT sold me a Samsung Galaxy S2 SKYROCKET for 149.00 (199 was normal price but I got 50 credit for what I paid for atrix) and a 160 credit on my bill. They put a supervisor on the line who apologized repeatedly for them not returning my call.
The crazy thing is they don't want the atrix back? I asked them what about the atrix they said try to return it at the store I bought it at if I want.. Overall I am more than happy with Att's response after they dropped the ball. But I will never buy another Motorola product again. They have yet to get back to me. They sent me an email over a week ago saying they will be contacting me in 24hours and and a week later nothing.

Never had my A2 gets too hot. BTW you had a problem with ATT not moto for not exchanging your phone. If it gets too hot and your battery is draining too fast it might just be a simple battery exchange. Moto will never listen to peoples request or demand ^_^v but there are great devs here cooking up some fix for our A2's existing bugs. I think i will never get to see your problem though because my GPS, 4g/data, bloatwares, are always off and have droidwall that gives me some control on what goes out of my phone. You might want to call ATT and have them check if your phone is set to 4G because mine wasn't before and they had to configure their end for it to work properly.
Before you went ahead and exchanged it, you probably should have flashed the stock fxz and factory restored, and then reinstalled your apps one by one to ensure that there isn't a rogue app hiding somewhere on your phone.
But at least you're happy with the end result. Too bad you don't still have the A2, it's a great phone. I've never had that problem with it (but I did a couple times with my A4G).
I just got an email back from Motorola today. Also, I did factory a reset and the problems persist. I do still have the phone. I may do refurb exchange and give it to my wife. She doesn't care about it like I do. She will have it torn up in 2 weeks from throwing it in her purse and letting my kids play with it.
I would bet on it being the issue I experienced with cpu not scaling. Let me tell you that was a witch Hunt.

How did you fix the issue? My phone is doing it now. I'm getting very frustrated, I really like the phone and I don't want to get rid of it. They have replaced my battery and my phone once over the issue, and here it goes again! Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Same issue here. Phone will be in stand-by mode, battery starts to get very hot to the touch, and it automatically reboots.
FYI: To the OP and anyone else; Your phone is under warranty for 1 year. You can go to the motorola website and look up whether or not you're still in warranty.
This could all be caused by a number of things, including but not limited to: SIM card may need to be swapped for a new one, the sdacrd may be of a class that's unstable to run or has corrupted data/app data, clearing Dalvik and/or cache partition(s) may not hurt to try, if the signal coverage isn't consistent and the phone has to search for signal to connect with this will eat your battery alive and cause some excessive heat as well, the battery may be going ka-put, battery stats could be wiped, may need to try a factory reset, or it could be a hardware issue altogether. Motorola isn't manufacturing "new" Atrix 2 phones any longer, so even if you have a warranty and go for an exchange through Moto, you're most likely going to end up with a refurb phone. Moto seems notorious for manufacturing devices that do run hot, and I suppose it could also be attributed to how much the user is "using" the phone. Clock speeds also, the higher they are, will run the phone hotter, and if pushed too high or at an unstable clock speed, the device most certainly WILL randomly reboot. Sorry there isn't a more 'definitive' answer that I'm able to come up with, but trying anything and everything at this point might not bode poorly in your favor...
I just bought Samsung Skyrocket phone from ATT, initially after about 20 mins of video or voice chat phone was getting really heat up at the back by the camera. I exchanged the device but still the same issue. Is this just how Skyrocket works or is there a setting which can be changed? It is getting heat up than normal phone
Mines been fine. The only tome it'll her hot is if I'm playing gta + charging the phone.
Or if I'm talking + charging; and even then its after like 5 minutes of use
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
They get warm under constant use. Make sure your battery is seated well. If it causes issues with the phone exchange it again, otherwise I think it is normal for these phones.
Any phone will get warm (not hot) with prolonged use. My inebriated girlfriend kept me on the phone for 2.5 hours last night. I wouldn't say it was ever more than "warm." By no means uncomfortable.
Same problem. After 15 mins of talk time i wouldn't be able to hold the phone close to my ears. I don't two devices can be wrong, its probably something wrong with the manufacturing of Skyrocket. I am very disappointed and returning this back unless someone here has a trick to reduce that heating? Thanks
Try charging and running GPS at the same time, and you can cook your hand. I was guiding my wife yesterday trying to find car dealers and with the phone plugged into a car charger + running GPS, I had to set it down because it was getting too hot to hold.
Doesn't seem much different from any other phone I've used GPS extensively on, other than it got to those temps a lot faster than most. I mostly figured that was related to the fact that it's such a thin device.
If I use navigation while I'm driving, it gets more than warm.
If I charge it while navigating, it definitely gets really hot. I believe it may even overheat and the GPS turns itself off temporarily for a minute.
It gets warm during phone conversations.
Other than that, it stays cool doing anything else like playing a video for even hours.

Hmmm...then really whats the point in having this phone when other phones do not have this pbm
have not had any issues with the phone, only been warm when tethering via hotspot
Mine gets pretty toasty when charging and talking and using GPS, but I've got a case on it as well (which probably isn't great for the battery) but I don't notice the heat as much because of the case.
Check your actual battery temperature and see what it is when it is warm and post the results here
Mine gets warm if it's sitting in my pocket in an area w/ spotty connection. Needless to say, my battery also drains very rapidly when this happens, too.
dumb question..how do i check?
Mine gets heated under extensive use...I used wifi and slacker for 3 he's and if was warm.
rocketed to da sky using mah brain and mah thumbs...
I tried the following:
i) rooted the phone
ii) removed all att apps
iii)disabled 4g
Used for 15 mins to make a call, still same issue it gets rediculously hot. I can say for sure it is definitely gets hot than a normal phone.
Wanted to give ONE last try, exchanged the phone at att store and this phone also had same issue. I gave up and returned the phone. I might get a S-2.
I would just wait...at this point there are at least 3-6 new devices coming out and the sr and s2 will be old news

See the problem is, because of the nature of smartphones, and that android is actually a linux os, many problems people face are'nt actually hardware problems. They are problems caused by installed apps and settings the user themself had done. Dumbphones, blackberrys and iPhones lock off this functionality, which is y I don't consider them a computer in ur hand, android is. That being said it is both a blessing and curse, this flexibility we have

Using CM11 snapshot january update
I woke up late last night to see my phone still with the yellow charging light on while it was on the charger. i found that odd since it had been on the charger for almost 4 hours. i went to bed with it at 75% and when i went to the battery page it was at 50%. wierd thing is the graph says "3hr and 50 min on battery" but the line graph shows that its is, in fact, charging. another thing ive noticed is that the wifi line graph is solid, im not 100% sure its supposed to be intermittent, i.e. phone is sleeping and what not.
once i noticed that it was still discharging i looked at running apps, nothing outside what anyone else would have running at the end of the night. after i cleared the running apps it started charging again.
i know that i may have answered my own question at the end of the second paragraph but chargers put out more power than a phone can consume while being dormant so im trying to isolate a handful of things.
1. is the wifi line graph supposed to be solid all the time? (I didnt think so but)
2. is the rom im using (cm11 snapshot current update) on an outdated kernel?
3. whatever else that can brainstormed
and before i get a but of wrong forum reply's, i dont have a choice i need my 10 reply's to get this into the correct forum..... unless admin moves it into a developer forum....eh...eh?
thanks for any help you guys can provide.

solid wifi line.. go to the phones main settings, wifi, wifi settings(3 dots bottom right), advanced, disable scanning always available.
cm uses cm kernel. outdated is when a kernel is no longer good, a lower kernel number doesnt mean anything.
and this kind of post have no business being in development, no mod would ever even consider moving it there. development is for development, not questions that are very basic. you actually got the right forum.
Weird. As Sims said turn wifi scanning to off.
It could be a nightly issue with CM at the current moment, check there.
PS: There are other ROMs than just buying a phone and throwing cyanogen mod on it.
Good deal. Thanks guys.
I know I could put any ROM on a phone I used to have an s4 and did several ROMs with that. Then I had to send it in and they gave me one that was mf3 and I was just tired of jumping through hoops. But I put cm on mine because I getting away from full service and using strictly Google voice on a data only plan for cheaper service (Att is the best service overall where i am but their no contract sucks), and cm, so far, is the only one that has voice plus to integrate gv SMS into you native SMS app. That's my big thing. But if there's other ROMs at utilize voice+ I'm open to them.
I'm going to be of no help to you, but just to let you know, this is the correct forum. Nothing except something that you developed goes in development. Nothing. Questions and all other random things go in either Q&A or General.
I don't see you mention which charger you used. Wired? Stock charger and cable? The WiFi bar will be solid over night with your WiFi on and never intermittent.

Wiggle won't effect charge speed. Using a different adapter or cable then what came with your phone will effect charging speed however as well as the phone's current draw.
Well yea right. What I meant to say was that I may not be getting a solid connection, and if I had it sitting a certain way, it may not be charging at all, making appear as though the battery was draining "while charging" when it actually wasn't even charging. My biggest thing was that this is the first I've noticed it so. Maybe the cable is just crappy and is giving out. ( not the OE cable)

So let me say I love the note series and have owned all but the 1 and the 5 (no expandable memory or removable battery, sounded like an iphone to me) i even still have my Note Edge (often forgotten about in the line up)
And cant really see going to anything else but not really sure what the future holds for the Note.
Well im on my second note even though i had zero issue with my first note but i decided to play it safe and swap it out for the safe unit.
Since i have done this im starting to have some issues with my safe unit and figured id share my experiences with you guys.
The first issue was and is i occasionally get the moisture detected in charging port notification when i plug my phone in to charge it. The phone has never been in or near water not even in the bathroom during a shower so its strange. Also when this notification pops up the phone wont charge via port but you can still charge it wirelessly.
The latest issue is that ive gotten a irregular charging detected notification and with this one it charges and stops charges and stops constantly like a loose connections or when your cable is frayed and you have to position it just right.....lol
Now if you go into the setting and turn off the fast charge this issue goes away, matter of fact both issues go away. Im wondering if these issues plagued the ones that went poof.
Is anyone else having any similar issues with their Notes?

I saw a youtube video about the note 7 exploding under stress tests. And before one of them exploded, the notifications that you explained started happening. Couldnt charge the phone anymore. Wonder if its a charging software glitch that is causing the problem.
