[Q] Can i use Nand backup of stock to restore and then update firmware? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

hello XDA,
im currently running cleanrom 4.0 (amazing rom btw) . before i flashed any roms i made a nand backup of stock 1.73. if i went ahead and restored that backup would i be able to go ahead and run an OTA update then re-root / re-unlock if needed? i know i can install the RUU but if restoring the backup could work, itd make it easier lol. im not planning to do this, but i am wanting to find out just in case and for the future. thank you for your time

thank you gunny (thanked :good: ) . and yes i do agree, but if i ever wanted to go back to stock (for whatever reason) this to me would be easier than installing an RUU.

You mean returning to rooted 1.73 with custom recovery, not returning to stock.
If you really want to return to stock (but BL still unlocked, of course) its much easier to run the RUU.
Also, if your intent is to update to "official" later build (like 1.85) you are better off running the RUU, or a pre-rooted recovery-flashable version. OTAs are just patches, not a clean install, and usually cause more problems then RUU. Restoring from scratch is not that hard (especially with Titanium) and you will be better off in the long run.

wanted to know about update

hey all
i bought nexus S yesterday and its showing there is a update for 2.3.3
i just wanted to know how to backup my current version i.e 2.3.2 so if i dont like 2.3.3 i can switch back .. its a new phone not rooted one
If you're rooted, you can do a nandroid backup from recovery. (You will most likely have to re-root after the update.)
nope its not rooted
everything is stock
I'm think you're out of luck, then.

Wrong. Download a nandroid backup of 2.3.2 (or flash a 2.3.2 FULL ROM from Google itself) and flash that.
Either of those will get you back to 2.3.2.

No, you just flash stock ota updates that directly come from google. Just has to be renamed to update.zip and flashed through stock recover. And if that was a reference from the other thread then, no comment.

[Q] What happens with root?

Hello XDA members
I was wondering, when the new android sandwich comes out, and you got a rooted and S-off HTC sensation. But not custom rom. What will happen to the root and S-off when you update to the new android sandwich?
Thanks
Want to know too ahehhe
We'll lose root but keep S-OFF I'd imagine
Cool, thanks for the answer
I have perm-rooted my Sensation and i was wondering when the new official update from HTC comes out will i be able to install it automatically like when i was not rooted or because i am S-Off it will not let me?
Thanks
i could be wrong but no you wont be able to perform an ota update. im only saying this because the last ota update failed because the update looks for the stock recovery in order to update the system. seeing that you are rooted i assume you have cwm installed and if this ota update does indeed look for the stock recovery than it will fail. the only way around this is to either instal a stock ruu and lose root or instal the stock recovery and again lose root. either way you are gonna lose root.
Could you give me a link where there is a guide to install the stock recovery?

Depends. If you're just running the original rom which came on your phone but rooted, it should still allow ota updates, but you'll lose root (but keep s-off). If you're on a custom rom you won't receive an ota.
To OP, if you ran an ruu or ota of ice cream sandwich, as eddy says, you'll lose root but remain s-off. That said, a custom ics rom will probably come out weeks/months before an official HTC update
Well, when we got the RUU, we can extract and repack to our rooted ROM
It should be this if i am right ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559

Yes I am running the stock rom so I will receive the pta update. I know that I will lose root in every scenario if I install the stock ROM one way or another.
Thanks.

So i just flash one of these roms, without deleting cache or doing a reset ?
not entirely true. i was rooted on stock rom when the last ota rolled out. i tried installing it but it failed. i did a lil search here and found a few people mentioned that it failed due to cwm and they also mentioned that you should try flashing back the stock recovery. i tried that and it installed successfully. easy way to get the stock recovery is to instal the correct ruu of your rom. but as we all know it wipes out everything off your phone. i did find this guide which the stigx has asked for (sorry buddy didnt see you there ) which shows you how to extracted the stock recovery off of the ruu and than flash it back to your phone.

But if I need to follow your guide i have to have the OTA update file,w hich haven't comet out yet. What do i Do? It seems so hard to remove root and custom recovery :'(
But thank for your answer !
well the general idea is to get your stock recovery back without losin your data. so really all you need to do is flash your stock recovery reboot your phone and check for updates. if updates are available: system>about phone>check for updates, download the update and install. it shouldnt fail cause you have stock recovery instead of cwm. in short just do the top part of the guide and skip the rest cause you dont have the updates file on your computer.
So if i do step 1-12 I will have normal phone? Just like I started or do i still keep root?
Thank you so much for your hep !

yes you do 1-12 but you keep root. the only difference is that you will no longer have cwm for flashing, back up, and all other goodies. but once you run the ota and it installs you lose root.
but have a look at the link frederikh just posted. seems alot better than the current method. im reading over it now
Thanks for the answers!
I think i will go with the link frederikh gave me But God bless you Divine! Thank you for your help !

[Q] Returning to stock [i9020a]

I just wanted to make sure that I understood the process of returning my phone to stock before I make a mistake.
All I've done since I purchased the phone was root it and unlock the bootloader. I have not loaded any custom roms.
So If I understand this correctly I need to:
1) Flash the Stock Image (which should include the stock recovery?)
2) Use fastboot to lock the bootloader
The reason I'm wanting to return the phone to stock is to receive OTA updates. I never use any apps requiring root, and don't plan on loading any custom roms.
I never did find a 2.3.4 stock image for the I9020A..
you should actually be able to get ota updates no problem. it'll just remove root every time you update.
it's probably not a good idea to lock the bootloader though cause if you ever want to unlock it again in the future you'll have to wipe everything from your phone. your best bet is to just flash stock recovery so you can install the update
i'm pretty sure that works, but hopefully someone else can verify just so you don't get some bad information lol
I heard the same thing about OTA updates. If you're phone is rooted and you're using the original rom, you'll get the update but you'll have to root your phone once again.
I haven't tried this myself so I cannot verify it.
It's just the word on the street, you know!

you need stock everything, so stock kernel, rom, radio, etc... the op should be fine to update if they flash stock recovery though. rooting is simple from there

Thanks again kibmcz, so I just completed the flash, then did a fastbook oem lock.

When I go into settings and hit Sound I get a Force close when I try and select a new ringtone...
Should I try reflashing again?

Using my zip yes... it flashes Bootloader, Radio, Boot, System and on first boot (and any other time recovery changes) Recovery is flashed. All you got to to is lock the bootloader and that wipes user data and usb storage.
hey man i appreciate you coming forward with a solution, ive yet to recieve the phone but wanted to prepare.

System won't mount in twrp, trying to flash rom

Trying to keep this short but i seem to have messed up. I was trying to get back to stock with this phone so i've been trying to use the RUU to flash back to stock. I keep getting the 22 RU_HEADER_ERROR when i try the RUU sd card method but i read on here that you may need S off to make it work. If you flash a RUU that matches your cid/mid you don't need s-off. At least when you upgrade your OS Version and not downgrade.
A "fastboot getvar all" will help us to provide you a correct RUU version, if there is one.
About the system not mouning:
you most likely checked in twrp to mount system as readonly.
TWRP-MOUNT: Uncheck "Mount system read only"
I have the correct version but i keep getting the above error.
Also i did uncheck read only for mount system. I think i may have messed up something when i relocked the bootloader with custom rom and recovery then unlocked it again. I must have messed up something then. The ruu seems the only option. I'm trying to flash the same one i have installed which is the 1.28.617.6 on the spread sheet for the us phone but keep getting the error. You said i need s off to downgrade but not to upgrade. So do i have to wait for newer software?
Seems more like it you have a bad download. Did you check the md5 of your download?
Yep, bad download.
Also, why do people re-lock the bootloader? I don't see any gain from doing this.

agree, unlocked bootloader breaks safety net. So if you decide to return back to stock/non rooted you would need to relock to be able to pass Safety Net again.
That would be the only reason for me.

Getting back to full stock. Ocean_UHL 2.33.401.19 RUU ??

Hello guys!
After giving LeeDroid a chance I decided that I do not like it and flashed the nandroid backup through TWRP. Everything works great, except that I still have TWRP installed so I cannot receive OTA.
In the RUU Collection spreadsheet there's no 2.33.401.19 RUU , only 2.33.401.10. I need that version because that is the main version that I get with getvar. Also the CID is HTC_034.
My question is: is there any way to flash the stock recovery so I can receive OTA? Or is there any 2.33.401.19 RUU available so I can reflash everything back to stock?
Thanks a lot!

I've got the same cid as you, got s off, I flashed 2.33.401.10 by sdcard method then updated to 2.33.401.19 by ota , it worked fine, you loose ur su & custom recovery, which then allows it the ota

I downloaded untouched twrp from the Google spreadsheet, restored it then flashed stock recovery (2.33.401.19 stock on Google spreadsheet) when I was in the same position on 2.33.401.10 and there were no ruu zips available , it allows me to update. I just done it again on 2.33.401.19 cid034 as well, I know you used to able to flash older HTC backwards with s on from memory card method if it was a minor update the first 9 digits being identical, haven't had the bottle to try it tho lol

I done it m8, sdcard method, works fine I'm on cid034, download from the Google xda sheet, I updated it back to 2.33.401.19 afterwards via HTC ota, Had no problem no bypasses when flashing (2PZCIMG.zip) from my sdcard , I believe it worked because it was only a partial update and not a downgrade in software (only version) . At least now I know I have no problem going to Pie when we eventually get it
So you say that you flashed full stock 2.33.401.10 over 2.33.401.19 and it worked??

I believe it works although I have never done so. However I done it downgrading from 8.1 RR to 8.0.
