Hi all,
I am stuck on installing ICS.
I am trying to install SKY-ICS 4.2F6.
I am in CWM, and Format the /data, /system, /cache, /emmc folders.
Then I install from zip the ROM, now it is in bootloop (Keeps rebooting), I ddo see the samsung logo, and I can boot into CWM.
Am I missing something?
This is on a fresh , rogers I727R
Thanks
Heeter
Did you use the touch or non-touch version of CWM?
The non-touch version does not wipe the cache properly which results in soft brick (bootlooping). Ensure you are using the touch version of CWM, you will probably have to flash it via ODIN.
There's probably a thread somewhere that explains how to do this, the instructions I followed are here:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/touch-clockworkmod-recovery-for-rogers-and-att-skyrocket-sgh-i727/
The reason I link this and not some thread is because I know this works, and I have heard there are possible issues with the latest version of CWM touch, I have been using 5.8.1.3 for a while now with 0 issues.
EDIT: I take no responsibility if somehow the above bricks your phone, if you are unsure on the use of ODIN please search and read up on it, you can brick your phone easily with it if you click the wrong thing.
Thanks a million, RabidSmurf
That did the trick
I am on the welcome screen
Thanks again,
Heeter
No problem, glad it worked!
I had the exact same issue when I first got my phone and had trouble finding the answer.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me. I've searched a few threads and tried a few things but none solved my problem. Here is a summary of what I have done:
I have a New Nexus S 4G
I rooted using the method on nexusshacks dot com
Initally couldn't get into recovery, so flashed new Recovery and was able to go through install process
Tried installing latest MIUI and got a loop on the booting animation
Redownloaded the rom and tried again
Tried manually installing through recovery wiping cache x3 and dalvik x3 then installing, same thing
Tried the above with CyanogenMod to see if it was the Rom that was bad and got a boot loop there as well.
I have a recovery of the stock ROM that I am running, but would appreciate any help. Thanks
You can't flash custom roms with stock recovery, get cwm recovery for NxS 4g.
Also, stay away from nexushacks method. Lately there are ****loads of ppl here on the forums that got stuck at some point after following their manual. I'd recommend this sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071500 (especially the guide on how to root by BuglessPete)
Additionally, ALWAYS make sure you download for NxS 4g
Thanks for your reply. I was using CWM I downloaded through Rom Manager. Im on a Mac, do the ones you suggest work on Mac?

Are you sure that you tried Nexus S 4G ROMs? Also try to format /system partiton before flashing...

They were definitely NS4G roms, downloaded a couple times to be sure. Can you explain the quote above? I didn't see an option for this in CWM Recovery.
Also, I tried running through the steps to root on a Mac from the link previously posted in this thread and same result. I did not unroot before doing it. Should I have? And how do I unroot on a Mac?
Don't know about unrooting...You can find format options in mount section in CWM recovery. Try to format system, cache and data. Have you tried to flash stock rooted ROM?

The formatting fixed it. Thanks all.
Great! Glad to be helpful ...

In OP you linked instructions for flashing a custom recovery to apply root.
Your title suggests your goal is instead a custom rom.
You said the (linked) tutorial gave "exactly...nothing",
but you are using CWM (from the tutorial, yes?) for your failed rom flashes.
Find a rom with insructions you thoroughly understand and read its entire thread carefully.
Then follow its OP instructions exactly.
Do that and you should have your answer.
If not, you will find much more and better help a lot faster, and then certainly reach your goal.
Are you using the original CWM Recovery or the Touch Recovery? With the original, I found that I had to use Darkside Wipe due to an apparent bug that does not occur in the Touch version.

He means wipe the cache after installing the rom OR use dark side CACHE wipe.

As of late it is important to use the CWM version listed in the OP. What ever version the DEV uses while building and testing the ROM, normally works best with said ROM. Not all versions of CWM work the same.
Currently I am in a soft brick state- I cant remember which CM- 9 either cm-9-20120614-EXPERIMENTAL-skyrocket-alpha5.zip, or cm-9-20120709-NIGHTLY... (I can see that those are the only two I have on my sd card. I am on an ATT GS2 skyrocket
If I boot normally - it stays stuck on the CM9boot screen.
I can use the 3 finger method to boot into CWM 5.8.4.3
While searching for answers I read that this CWM is broken.
Initially I was trying to go back to an earlier recovery. CWM would see the recoveries on the SDcard, but when I tried to recover- it would not mount from the SD card.
I got to CM( by using odin to put an earlier CWM, and superuser on the phone, then installed Rom manager, then used rom manager to flash CWM (via tmobile sgs2) then updated to CWM touch...
When I tried using the CWM to factory restore and cache wipe it starts then hangs I cant install zips from the external SD card, or any recoveries...
I'm figuring worst case - I can go back to ODIN, and do stock recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348 , then flash the non touch CWM, superuser http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526, then flash a recovery from my sd card??
Is there something else I might have missed in trying to get back to a functional state without going to odin?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance

Hi there,
I recently experienced the same thing, and it was a hassle to fix--but I have got my phone working each time. The downside being that I /had/ to switch over to Odin. Mind you, I am not necessarily experienced with Android, so I can't really say that this is the only way.
At any rate, here's what I did to get it back to normal:
Load up Odin
Put it in download mode -- I assume you know to hold the volume keys and then plug in the USB.
Flash either the ICS leak or the stock 2.3.5 Gingerbread.
You should be back to good. I hope you backed everything up in either Kies or some other resource...else you're in for a hell of a time setting stuff up.
Oh: bad news about the 2.3.5 stock is that, as far as I can tell, you're unable to upgrade to 2.3.6. In turn, you're then unable to update to the official ICS through Kies or OTA. I assume you don't mind, considering you're trying to flash a new rom anyway.
Anyway, I do hope there is some bit of clarity on getting CM9 on the Skyrocket. As of now I have still been unable to do it. Just as you, no matter the settings I try, I end up being stuck at that screen. The only difference between your method and mine is that I completely did mine through CWM...nothing through ROM Manager. (Actually, I believe I tried a few differing methods involving the CWM touch and non-touch...followed many different guides but still no good.)
Hope you get it back to a functioning state. If you get CM9 working on the Skyrocket, I'd appreciate you sending a bit of details on how to do so.
EDIT: I am now on CM9. Through magic, ponies and friendship I have failed to accomplish this feat. But by pure science and the blood of a pony, I have successfully installed CM9.
After you've restored to 2.3.5 or the ICS leak (the one I was on), do the following:
- Grab the recovery-clockwork-touch U27 described below. Flash it.
- Download both the newest CM9 build from their website, as well as Google Apps, and then copy those to your external SD.
- Follow this guide: http://www.teamchopsticks.org/p/install-guide.html. Here's what's relevant to you:
Wipe data/factory reset.
Format /system (mounts and storage->format /system).
Install the CM9 zip from SD card.
Install the gapps zip from SD card.
ONLY IF YOU ARE ON TOUCH CWM RECOVERY: Format /cache (mounts and storage->format /cache)
Reboot. Let it sit for a few minutes after the first boot. Be patient.\

After ~10 minutes you should be fine. Mine took less, but I'd bet it could take longer. Please follow those directions above EXACTLY. I'll be happy to help you in any way I can if you reply to this thread/ send me a PM.
When I softbricked with the latest CWM I wasn't able to return back since it wouldnt detect my SDcard so I just loaded up odin and used recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.3-hercules.tar and was able to read my SDcard again which had all my backups and CM9 files. I have flashed every version of CM9 every since and still using this CWM version and havent had any problems. :good:
All better now- I used ODIN to restore to stock, then used it again to put CWM (non-touch) back on, then added superuser, then just did a restore from SDcard! Muchas Gracias all!
Should I be able to then use a restore of when I had a working CM9 (and backed up with CWM)? Or would I have to do all the cache wiping/ factory reset like I did to install it the first time before using such a recovery? (and I will try that recovery- clockwork touch hercules... latrer tonight from home)
ODIN tar to restore back to factory. I got the boot loop too. Only until after I flashed CM9 then flashed dark side wipe cache only would CM9 work for me. Only on regular CWM though. Try and give that a go.

Hi guys, I'm relatively new to this forum.
I've been trying to upgrade my Tmobile LG G2x phone to ICS by using an AOKP ROM that I found online. I followed the instructions on how to use a CWM from this site and all of that worked. However as I was copying the AOKP file to the phone, I realized that I had already extracted that file to my phone instead of leaving it as a zip.
When I booted my phone in CWM I tried to access the install zip from Sd card> choose zip from Sd card> then select the aokp_p999-test2.zip to start flashing the AOKP ROM (ICS). However, all I saw were a bunch of files.
The real problem: I followed these instructions earlier:
Now do a full wipe by selecting Mount and Storage then wipe the following:
Format System
Format Data
Format Cache
Go back to main menu and select advance then wipe dalvik-cache.
Apparently I didn't have a backup, so when I wiped all these formatting files and tried to boot back to my phone to recopy the files, I'm stuck on a blinking screen during boot... I have no way of returning back to my phone and I'm freaking out right now...
Tried using a Flash Stock Recovery option, but I get stuck on the page and can't click on Reboot System now.
HELP ME PLEASE...WHAT DO I DO
AOKP has not been updated for this phone in some time, there are a couple of links to the builds on page 102 of that thread if you insist on trying that out. I'd suggest trying a different ROM from the the development section that has been more recently updated though.
Can you not boot into CWM again hold down the Power & VOL down buttons when you turn your phone on? If not try this: ROM for recovery G2X under the NVFLASH

Thanks

The directions in that thread should get your phone to boot back up with the stock ROM installed but since you could still try to just boot into CWM after downloading a different ROM and flash it. There are nandroid backups of the stock ROMs HERE that you can download and unzip the folder into your Clockworkmod/backup folder to have a backup

Alright that worked! Now I want to try again to get a ROM for ICS. Since you said that the AOPK one is outdated, do you have any suggestions or links to new ones that work well? I know it's off-topic, but thank you!

Ive got a lg g2x it has been flashed with different rom. but I put the factory rom back on it. But the baseband is wrong it just clicks when making calls. I fixed it before but now cant remember how to install the baseband. I have the one I need on my sd card just don't remember how to install or load it. Any help is appreciated.
Still no luck ive been searching all day. When I try to install from the sd card in CWM. After rebooting the back light for the screen just flashes and the phone doesn't load. Please help my Galaxy is busted need to switch phones
You don't need to install a baseband. Just the baseband fix. Search in the forums for baseband fix and flash the right one.

Thanks for the advise. Searching baseband fix brings up stuff that I have read all day. Is flashing a baseband different than installing from sd card in CWM? Sorry noob here. Might be reading what I need some where and just not understanding it. How do you flash the baseband? I know the baseband file on my sd is correct because I had the phone working before.
I honestly dont know how to updgrade/downgrade a baseband. But I'm pretty sure it's not as simple as flashing it. Like I said all you need is the baseband FIX for your phone to start working again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776843 Here's the sticky that's in the G2X General forum.
If you're on the new baseband and having popping issues then you need to flash the first download link in CWM. If you're on the old baseband and having popping/clicking issues when calling then flash the third download link in CWM.
Thanks again I have read that sticky. I did see where someone wrote that flashing is the same as a rom. When I go it that way It wont reboot. still searching and trying different things
Tried using the links from sticky. When I try to reboot after installing from sd in CWM. It flashes the LG logo then nothing. Screen just lights up goes dark then lights up over and over. Not sure if Im just not doing it in the right order or what. Can anyone help me with the actual flashing process or explain why it wont reboot

I believe so. Like I said im a noob. I don't do a lot with phones but normally can figure stuff out through forums. Phone is on android 2.3.3 right now. Kernal 2.6.32.9 build GRI40 software version lg p999 v20c. Not sure if any of that helps. Thank you for continuing to reply still hoping someone can be like hey your doing this ------ wrong
You have CWM recovery installed.....did you install it via NvFlash (the correct way) or was it done through the Rom Manager app (the WRONG way)?
First, I would like to know if you are rooted. Do you have the super user or SU app on your phone? You can open up a terminal emulator and type in SU and find out that way also. If it's not rooted, report back and I will give you a zip file that you can flash to easily root the device. Next, I would upgrade the baseband to 2.3.4 with the LG updater tool.
CWM was on the phone when I got it. So not sure how it was installed. I do have the super user app. How can you tell if its rooted? The phone had been messed with before I got it. That's how the baseband got messed up. I found how to fix it on here the first time. But now I cant find the same page/thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037120
This may help
I tried the firmware it aborted install like others were talking about it doing.
I also tried the LGMobile support tool and cant get it to work. Getting really irritated that I cant figure this out.
I fixed it before and now I cant. Would be really nice if it would just reboot with the baseband. But no it gets stuck in a boot loop.
Thanks for all your help Pain-N-Panic kinda surprised no one else has chimed in
Have you tried doing a COMPLETE wipe of the device and re-flashing a ROM?
Complete wipe = data factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format /system under the "mounts and storage" tab in CWM
I have done all that except formatting the system but just tried it and it still gets stuck in boot loop when I try to install the baseband file.
I should have bookmarked the page last time I know it wasn't this hard
The joys of noobhood
What is this baseband file you speak of?
Stop flashing that. It's not working. Do a complete wipe and Flash a working rom like vanilla cm7. Come back here and report.
If your phone can't flash a ROM and you get stuck in a boot loop I would reflash CWM with NVFLASH. Look around for NVFLASH in the stickies and you'll find it. Do you have an SD card? If so, make sure you choose the version of CWM that has SD card support within the NVFLASH user interface. Follow the instructions in the NVFLASH thread to the T in order to install it on your phoen. My advice:
1.) Download vanilla CM7 from get.cm and cm7 gapps package to SD CARD
2.) Reflash CWM to phone via NVFLASH software
3.) Flash CM7 and gapps from SD card through your newly installed recovery
4.) Reevaluate where your phone stands
Super one click says my phone is rooted.
Ive tried a few baseband files from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1680292&highlight=baseband+install.
And the one I used before that fixed it don't remember where I got that one. I can flash roms fine.
Get stuck in boot loop when I install the baseband.
The NVflash's that I found are for different devices. Would that matter? I also cant get the get.cm/app to install on the phone
I may just be having a Id10t .problem here.
I have super one click and odin. No NVflash no CM/app and no KDZ pogram that the above link talks about.
However I did this before was with CWM,SOC or odin
Which phone do you have?
As the story says, a kiss turned my G2X into an HTC Ruby!
Its a LG-P999DW
Pretty sure Odin is for Samsung devices only...it has no use for our LG G2X. If you can flash ROMs fine then your recovery is working properly. Have you tried using the official LG updater tool to upgrade baseband?
