The slow USB transfer speeds with ICS... and JB too? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone able to hint at whether or not we could finally get a proper fix for the incredibly slow USB transfer rates with ICS on the Nexus S when Jelly Bean arrives in the next few weeks (hopefully)?
I know the general advice is "Just reboot into CWM and do the transfers there..." but honestly that gets a bit frustrating. I bought Wifi File Transfer Pro during a sale for $.99 and it's functional but, even that's somewhat slow to me (average 3-6MB/s). I have no idea what Flash-RAM is inside this device, I'm guessing since the Nexus S is made by Samsung (even though it's 18+ months old now) and they'd more than likely use their own high grade Flash-RAM it should be more than capable of writing at close to that speed as well.
Under CWM's storage mode the transfers are in the 10-15MB range so that's good, but...
Has anyone ever actually discovered why the USB transfers are so horridly slow on ICS on the Nexus S, or is it a situation where most people just shrug their shoulders and say "That's how it goes..." and that's that?
Just curious... love the device, it's my new main one as I recently dumped my HD2 to pay some bills. If it's specifically related to a busted kernel (3.x) then there's nothing that can be done about it I suppose, unless someone at Google has some clue as to what's going on.
Sure would be nice to plug in and get the speed this device is capable of instead of plugging in, rebooting to recovery, going into CWM storage mode, doing a transfer, then rebooting back out into ICS again.
I know it's been asked before but there's never been an actual answer to why it's happening, let alone a potential fix for it.
If it IS an issue with the 3.x kernel(s), doesn't that imply that Jelly Bean won't do much to address it and we'll still be stuck in the slow lane?
Thanks...
EDIT:
Found this JB port from steven776 from the SDK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28113909&postcount=258
Installed it and it's running fine but but but... nothing changed as far as the USB transfer rates are concerned. I know it's not the "official" build of JB coming for the Nexus S but, even so, this doesn't bode well for a fix for this issue once and for all.

Well, the slow transfer speed bothers me a lot too, but I never thought of transferring the file using CWM, so thanks for the tip :good:

I cant offer any magic solutions or explanation for why its slow but maybe you could clear up a couple of things:
1) are you using a USB 2.0 cable or is it possible that it is only a 1.0?
2) the devices you are connecting your phone too (i.e PC, laptop) are they USB 2.0 capable?
3) check to see if your operating system's power management settings and make sure that there isn't anything slowing it down there
If you feel any better these are the speeds that I get, no matter what ROM im using (steve's JB port included) and I too have been underwhelmed by it.

Well for me I'm connected to a USB 2.0 port, I have no issues regarding from power management as that should have no affect.
But writing anything to the phone its very slow like anywhere from 300kbs to 1MB/s. But copying/writing from the phone to PC is always going to be faster I'm getting on avg. 14 to 18MB/s.

That's also bother me a long time and can't find any solution yet.

Nexus S JB is still slow
Hi, I have just updated to the official Jelly Bean update and can confirm that the USB problem is still present. I think I had read somewhere that the problem is in the kernel?

Any fix for this yet? Still annoying to go into cwm to transfer big files.. Thanks.

Go to clockworkmod and use then mount USB storage, you will get about 4mb/s

I believe this has to do with the transfer protocol used and your Kernel. Which kernel are you using, are you stock, rooted, or romed, and have you played with the MTP/FTP settings?

MTP Works fine
Hi,
Using Marmite Kernel 7.1.4CM on CM10 and JellyShot 0.1 I noticed that MTP Transfer is actually a lot faster than USB Transfer.
I had the same issue with slow transfer on ics and jb. with MTP its gone.

[Q] Possible bad Infuse?

Just wondering if some of the things I've been encountering are normal or if I maybe have a bad phone. When I have tried connecting my phone to my computer to move pictures or music, it takes forever or doesn't even finish transferring the content. It sometimes takes a little time to access pictures, probably normal. I haven't been getting any of the updates like some people here have been getting, I am still on UCKD5 and I haven't gotten the new market either. Also the one time that the DM server finally connected a while back and said there was an update it never downloaded the update. Also, it sometimes will randomly freeze or crash. Rarely though. Sorry, its my first Android phone and I just wanted to make sure that there aren't any issues with it.
Ok lets start with the transfer. How old is your computer? Also try a different usb port see if that helps. As for the updates try connecting to wifi and see if you can get them there. Also the updates aren't generally pushed you have to manually check. So if your not checking for them then that's why you aren't getting any. Have you rooted yet? If so are you running on a custom rom? We need to know everything bout your phone in order to help you. If your stock then that could be your crashing problems. I didn't stay stock at all. I noticed lag when working on a friends so I rooted mine right out of the box. Also restart your phone every now and again to clear out the memory. Don't get a task manager though.
Sorry about forgetting to give all that info. Computer is only a few months old. I built it around thanksgiving myself. Running Windows 7 64bit. I can try plugging it directly into a USB plug in the back instead of a front panel one. But I never had any problems syncing my ipod touch from a front panel plug... Phone is completely stock because I was waiting to see if gingerbread came out soon to try that before trying a custom rom. I do check for updates manually on our home wifi network too, and while "connecting to DM server" the little H+ icon usually comes on as well as the wifi. I haven't used any task manager other than the one Samsung built into the phone occasionally. Do you think rooting and flashing a custom rom would fix most of these things? Or is it mostly fine? Or should I hold out for 2.3?
All normal. This is Android, it's not so good out of the box.
Sent from my Infuse 4G
I know that it seems like gingerbread is about to hit, but I would honestly suggest going ahead and trying out a couple of the custom roms. It honestly can't hurt and I think it will give you a new appreciation for your device. I've only used Bionix Infinity and now I'm on Infused 1.5.3, but they all breathe new life into the device. This is, as Mike said, an issue that all android devices tend to have. All of the tweaking and adjustments that the devs make tend to give you the feeling of owning a brand new device even if you've had your phone for awhile especially coming from stock.

USB Storage can't be turned on

So I got an incident with my phone, if you wanna now about it, its at my sig, but the thing is that I dunno why or how, sometimes my computer does recognizes my phone and display the Turn on USB storage option at the notification bar, but each time I try to turn it on it just wont work. Attached is a logcat whenI try to enable it, maybe someone could tell me why it wont work.
What rom are you running for those off that are on the xda application?

Normally I got two nandroids a GB based one and an ICS based one, right now Im using both Eagle's Blood 2.3.7 v2.8 and ICS 4.0.3 Build 1. But I had this problem since... always. I'm a flashaholic so i have tested actually every rom from stock 2.2.2 to beta 4.0.3... I even have a nandroid of my original ROM (the one that came with it when y bought it and rooted it) and not even there works. The only clue i have right now is that only if I disable USB debugging it will randomly connect.
This may sound dumb but have you tried a different usb cable? I had the same problem and tried my girls and my phone was able to connect each and every time. another thing I noticed with my phone is that it sometimes won't connect using windows 7...xp no problem but 7 it plays hard to get.

No man, doesn't sounds dumb, actually if you read the "issue" background on my sig, you'll notice that I have made all those steps... its not a big deal, there are SDCard Readers and the bluetooth but... itw not the same.

Holy Mother of God! I did it! In one of those "random" times my comptuter recognized my phone I just pulled out the batt unplug/plug again the cable, keeping both vol buttons pressed and it reconginzed the APX decive! Then all I had to do was NVFlash again, restore the stock 2.2.2 Nandroid i had somewhere and play a bit with the USB mount/debbug options, flashed both storages (using gparted for the microSD) and it works! Now have to restore everything to my SD and reflash latest cm7...
Nice!

Did you ever figure this out? Sounds like your having the same problem that i am.
I've tried at least 6 different cables, home PC, work PC, laptop and a co-worker's PC that didn't have anything vmware installed (had a hunch that vmware usb drivers were the cause). Oh, all the computers were win7x64.
I've only rooted my phone and upgraded to 2.3.3 so nothing crazy going on there and it's worked for months since i did both of those.
I have a feeling that this may have been a recent windows update, but no clue when or which one because i haven't really cared that it didn't work. If i had to guess i'd say mine stopped working about 3 months ago... again, hard to remember.

Make sure usb debugging is turned off.
Plug in the phone, enable usb storage.
Right click on the phone drives in the explorer and click on eject.
Turn off usb storage.
Unplug and plug in again.
Enable usb storage.
Drives should work now.
This did it for me. Since then if I remember to eject before unplug I haven't seen any issues.

Thanks for the reply, I'll give that a shot.
Curious though, when yours was having problems, did windows detect anything? For instance, when I plugged mine into my co-workers pc there are zero pop ups about new hardware detected.

I had the same problem. Dirt in the mini-USB port can cause that problem.
Take a can of compressed air and blow it into the mini-USB port (blowing with your mouth isn't enough). Also, take a close look at the port with a magnifying glass and look for any dirt or discoloration in there.
Do the same with your cable.

Hi, this problem occur to me after I've installed RemICS 1.3.2 ROM (CM9 based), I did follow the installation steps from beginning, when the problem occur, I did re-flash the same ROM several times, but this problem still unsolved.
I did try all recommendations (blow out dirt, disable usb debugging etc) but still not success.
This ROM should able to detect USB when phone connected with PC, but somehow I don't know why. Any experts recommendation?

Hey, just thought I'd register an account because I stumbled upon this thread because I had the same issue verbatim and I managed to get it working.
I ended up using the USB 3.0 ports on my desktop and suddenly it picks up my g2x without fail everytime. With that said, I'm lead to believe that perhaps its an issue of power. Maybe the USB 2.0 ports you're using simply aren't providing enough power. Not sure what its worth or if my issue was something unrelated but maybe that bit of information is something to work with. =)
Found another solution that fixed the problem for me.
If you are using Windows XP, log on as an Administrator and open Device Manager
Select View > Show Hidden Devices
Scroll down to Storage Volumes, and expand
Right-click on each entry and select Update Driver.
This fixed the problem for me!

Skyrocket usb error

Hi everyone, this is my first post requesting help.
My skyrocket charges with the usb port but wont connect. I tried a darkside wipe, format of system data cache emmc and reflashing many roms. I want to use odin and try to use stock.recovery and rom to see if it works. I enter download mode and it still wont connect. I reinstalled kies and still doesnt work. Its not my computer cause my t989 galaxy s2 connects and these two phones are nearly identical.
Running ics real thing 4.2 v9 cwm touch by realsk8tr
If possible, try another computer.
I have the same problem with mine. This is a new problem that just started a couple weeks ago. Mine seems to be a hardware problem since it won't recognize USB connection in CWM, Odin, the stock rom, or my current Sky ICS rom.
I'll flash back to stock and send it back for warranty repair once I get another phone to use. I have a contract renewal coming up in May, so I'll do something then (I bought this one off contract, so I have to send it to Samsung)
Its a real pain because I have to transfer everything wirelessly between to/from my laptop.

It is a new problem that occured after using the ics leak. I cant believe there isnt a solution. Can you link me to a zip method that will return me to stock GB without the use of odin? And can i send my skyrocket in for warranty replacement? I never got insurance on it, i brought it in november from att nyc. This skyrocket also gets dev/block errors upon format. Any ideas guys?

Just for the heck of it try uninstalling kies, the drivers should stick. Sometimes that'll do the trick

Mine happened while I was still stock/rooted. I had changed nothing for several weeks. It just stopped recognizing when it was connected to USB. I have tested on multiple computers and tested another sgs2 on my laptop. The problem is definitely with my phone. No other computers recognize my phone is connected, phone won't mount USB, etc. Yet other phones work fine when connecting to my laptop.
I even flashed back to stock GB 2.3.5 , etc. Its not an ICS issue since this happened prior to flashing ICS (it actually went tits up in March prior to the leak).
I have a GB 2.3.5 Nandroid backup I'll flash before sending it to Samsung.
Samsung warranty is good for one year. AT&T will only do a 30 day exchange type warranty. Anything after 30 days has to go back to Samsung repair.
My only concern is without a USB connection I can't flash to the stock recovery. I can flash to stock GB and unroot and clean it up on the ROM side, but it will still have CWM recovery. Oh well.
The way I see it this is definitely a hardware issue. Samsung should fix the hardware problem regardless of the recovery software.

I guess I should have stated I have tried about 6 different cords.... I am a Systems Admin, so I've tried all the obvious fixes. It just absolutely will not recognize a USB connection anymore. Also, none of the computers recognize that a USB device has been connected.
It's definitely something wrong with the USB on the device.

I did flash the note modem once maybe my efs is corrupt
No, it's not that. It's hardware. It's almost certainly a cold solder joint. Must be a bad batch of I727s out there, mine's doing the same thing.
Sunday, I had a 30 minute call. After, I noticed the phone would charge, but couldn't get the computer to see it as a USB device. Last night, after an hour long call, I tried it and it worked. Managed to get it into download mode, flashed the stock .tar with ODIN, and got back to stock. About five minutes after that it started failing again (charging but not connecting, etc).
I'm using my T989 as a charger. If you can find a way to charge the battery, what I'm testing now might work. [EDIT: I re-read the OP and you have a T989 as well so you're set!] I'll post back. I set up a call to a test number (909-390-1390 is a 1Khz continuous tone) and placed the phone on the back of my video card with the USB cable connected. If it connects, we'll know this works for heating the phone up enough to temporarily 'fix' the cold solder joint.
But my skyrocket charges perfectly, via wall charger and usb, i have no need to use a external charger
You may not have the same issue as I have. I will note that as mine degrades it'll start acting as though I'm repeatedly unplugging it (PC rapidly going through USB connect/disconnect cycles, etc), then it'll still show that it's charging although the PC no longer recognizes it, until finally it acts as though the USB does nothing at all. The hotter I get the phone, the longer each stage takes.
Im just concerned that cwm will bone you from Samsung. one crazy idea is force brick so it doesn't turn on at all if they can't see recovery then you can anyways claim power failure

This is a good thread. My skyrocket is a used one from Texas. Won it on Ebay. Shipped out quick. Nice unit except it did exactly what I see described here.
It worked great the first day as a stock ice cream sandwich or whatever you call the ATT skyrocket software package Android 4.0 something. The USB hookup started getting flaky the more I used it, it would disconnect. It was unhooking, and I'd click to "copy files to PC" button again and again. It made rooting it a real challenge.
As if getting your arms around "Odin" wasn't intimidating enough...
I thought it might be from being jiggled, so when I was stashing the last of my downloads to flash CM9, I was careful to have it on a surface when I gently touched the screen and got all the files copied I wanted, and the phone, computer, and data cord left untouched, appeared to "work" ahead of the epic fail.
After I flashed the new CM9 from (wow thanks team chopsticks!) the USB is not recognized either in the skyrocket nor the computer, nothing. It shows charge, that's it.
I intend to get a USB reader for the microchip as a work-around. The phone screams. This is my second skyrocket and the new CyanogenMod 9 is the love I've been looking for. At last, a phone that can bring up a gallery full. My first skyrocket had trouble when the 32 GB microchip approached full. This one flips the 20 GB worth of pages full of folders up like nothing flat.
Also, interesting detail on this used Ebay phone... the first thing I noticed is you can't power it off. The seller shipped it with the battery removed. I tried plugging it in, leaving it unplugged, this i727 just will not power down. I do love the touchwiz recovery, and how you can select to reboot and then choose to boot into recovery. That part worked nicely and I am over all happy.
I know its late replay but I got solution!
I had same prob all i did was took toothpick stick it inside phone USB connector thing and pushed it little bit up and now it works perfectly FINE!
Yes the toothpick fix does work. Had the same problem with mine. Read about using the toothpick to fix this problem from a post back in December of last year. Don't pry up too much and break the toothpick off inside. A little twist is all it needed on mine. Noticed some dirt and grime came off on the toothpick. Maybe this helped clean it as well

[Q] USB Connection Won't Work

I can't seem to anyone else who has this problem. My TF700 is working great. However, today I decided to bite the bullet and install CleanRom. After unlocking, I realized that my computer can no longer see the tablet via USB. It is not an unrecognized device, just nothing happens when I plug it in.
I have tried two different cables on 3 computers, so I believe the problem is with the tablet itself. It charges just fine and when I plug the cable into the computer or unplug, the screen comes on (just like when you plug in the charger), so something is getting recognized.
I don't see any physical damage to the port, it looks fine.
Anyone else ever seen this?
Thanks,
Chris

It was, not sure how long ago though. I know it was when I first got it. I'm guessing it is a hardware problem, but not sure what to do about it. I honesly don't care all that much about it, but I would love to get TWRP on it so I can flash roms. I haven't seen a way to get TWRP on it without the USB or GooManager, but I can't run GooManager because I don't have root yet.
Still trying to search to see if there is a way to get root without USB, but I haven't found anything....

Chris,
See if downloading and installing PC Suite from Asus helps.
That might get the drivers working again.

Thanks, I'll try the software install, but since the computer doesn't even tell me I have an urecognized device (nothing in device manager), I'm not sure that it is. I also already rolled back to stock ICS and also tried the storage settings to no avail.
I unfortunately think I have a hardware problem. I guess I'm stuck at trying to get it repaired, or just live without the USB connection....which I guess ultimately means no customizations. I can still flash back to the stock Jelly Bean using the factory bootloader and rom from the Asus site, so I may have to live with that.
Could be the cable. Sadly, replacing it is ridiculously hard.

Connect the tablet to a PC running Linux and run lsusb to see if the tablet is recognized (the vendor ID is 0B05) - just to sidestep any possible Windows driver issues.

Issues with Galaxy S Blaze 4G (Help!)

Hey guys,
It has only been three months since I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, and I currently have a few issues that really are bugging me out. I will bullet them out to make it clean and easier for you guys to read and figure out.
ALSO -- My phone is rooted, rocking a custom rom (AOKP JB Blaze 4G: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989825)
1. Every time I take a screenshot, picture, download something, or just about any piece of data, my phone for some reason saves it all to my internal storage device, which is barely 1 GB. I have a 32GB MicroSD card, and bought the SD card with the intention that I can save all my data to that, never having to worry about my 1GB internal storage getting full. Is there any way to fix this? My phone is rooted, rocking a custom ROM, and I really don't see how this can be an issue. Can someone help me to fix this issue? I am a real noob when it comes to stuff like this, so I would appreciate detailed instructions!
2. My phone currently has an issue where every time I get a notification, the 4 LED touch-buttons on the bottom of the phone start blinking. I prefer it to not blink at all (as I would instead like to save precious battery life).
3. Even though its only been three months (less than a month with the new ROM) I noticed that the battery life is not too amazing, it drains out REALLY fast for some reason. All I really do on my phone is web browsing and visiting a social media app (facebook, twitter, etc...) and that's really it. Is there a way to possibly fix this as well? Could it be the ROM
4. When I drive, I often use my phone as a GPS, and what's funny is, even though the phone is plugged in (and technically charging), the battery drains out. I don't know how that is possible, as the phone is plugged in and charging through my car. Could it just be that this phone was never meant to be used as a GPS? Or is this another problem that can have a workaround to?
Anyways, that is my list, I'd really appreciate your help to solving all those issues, as I use this phone as a daily driver, and need all of the phone's functions working without problems.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Im new here also as of today. Im sorry your having issues with your phone and the rom. I have been doing alot of research on this phone we have as Im still stuck on Gingerbread. I just went off contract from Tmobile and recently rooted it. Getting ready to upgrade the rom.
I have read in some posts that the JB rom did have some problems with recognizing SD cards. Seems to me that I read that this was changed in a later release. I wish I could find that thread again and show you but it escapes me. Is this a stock ROM for JB that you are using?
I do have a question for you. I want to upgrade from gingerbread and thinking CM10. However, I do have to make sure speakerphone works. Any problems there?
I would guess at this point that you should try another ROM.

1:Your going to have to flip the external and internal SD card in order to fix that. I remember there being an xposed module for that.
2: pulse notifications are enabled. I haven't run 4.1 in a long time but I think it's under the display settings.

How exactly would I flip the external and internal SD card? I am unaware of how to do this by all means.

Ok, Most likely the vold.fstab file lists the mounting points for the phones filesystem. It will probably be a text file and I would suggest making a backup copy before modifying it. Otherwise you could really screw things up.
I have not viewed this file yet because I dont know of the exact location yet. I found a link but Iam a new user and not permitted to post it. Do a search for vold.fstab and you should easily find a link for editing it.
Basically, Your going to edit the fstab file and change the settings for mounting the sdcard. I would think a reboot of your phone will probably be the last step.
Hope this helps, From one learning to another

I'd forewarn you that the sdcard swap is for kitkat and the op is using AOKP 4.1.2

Sorry for being late on this one, I am in the middle of exams and have been really busy.
Is there any sort solution to this that is newb-friendly (step by step), would be awesome to use my external SD card for its full use.

In the previous page wollieburger posted a link to edit the correct files. A really good guide (one post) on how to do it.

When I am changing the input from 0 to 1, the file is unable to save.
EDIT: It works now! Thanks for the post, and apologize again for being so late on this!

You should be able to disable the flashing LEDs (also known as pulse notifications) through the display settings.
I'm not certain if there were device settings in the 4.1 era.
Battery life on 4.1 was garbage. I could only imagine the GPS drain.
4.3 had the best.

The GPS navigation on the blaze takes a lot of battery. If you have the phone plugged in the battery won't drain as fast as compared to not having it plugged in.

To be honest, I never had a battery life problem on 4.1.2, one reason is I didn't use Google Apps (I had gapps package installed, but the minimal package), I also followed this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
If you like push notifications from Gmail and other Google dependent apps, ignore that thread. Otherwise, it will improve your battery life. The other reason was I never ran cm10. I ran @thomas.raines ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2. Imo, the best cm10 based rom the Blaze had. But that's MY opinion. He's taken down the link, maybe you can try and chase him down and see if he'll re-upload it for you...
