Instead of whinging and crying about a blackmarket app here on Xda, do the decent thing and purchase the app instead of ripping developers off!!

Hi Guys,
I have searched high and low for the answer to this one, so I thought I'd give up and ask you guys.
What I need is an Emulator for PPC that I can use on my computer to test downloaded programs before I instal them to my XDA.
The problems are:
Active sync appears to only work with visual .net development suit, which I dont have the money to buy.
Embeded visual C does run a nice emulator, but it wont connect to the active sync and thuse I cant install programmes. There did seem to be a solution in useing the folder option in the above programe to access a Virtual SD card on the computer (shared folder on my drive) but how do I access the programmes?
I would prefer to try these programmes out in a sand pit if I could.
But there doesnt seem to be away.
Please dont flame me if I have missed an earlier thread or some google search... I am new.. I am not worthy... I have no flame retardent underware...

I don't have an answer for you, (I also would like to do this also!), but I don't believe you will be able to get the eMbedded Emulator to run 'real' apps because these apps are compiled for a CPU target, (usually ARM) and the emulator only runs 8086 compiles.
The emulator is more to test your own source code and it compiles for 8086, and when you are ready, you compile your source for ARM, MIPS, to distribute.
If anyone knows of a Windows based emulator that runs ARM compiled programs, I would LOVE to know about it.
I seem to remember there was a Palm version where you could simply drag and drop programmes into it and test them. Would be nice if that were so for the PPC.
Still noone said life had to be perfect ;-)
Edy
Ya, I came from the Palm world, and they did have an emulator that would allow you to run Palm apps. It wasn’t the great emulation, but it usually was good enough to give you an idea if you even wanted to bother installing it on your ‘real’ device.
Well, maybe there is one for PPC and we just don’t know about it… Anyone???
There is no such an emulator and making it is extremely difficult. You'll have to completely emulate whole CPU, some hardware and write your own OS just for this "virtual" PocketPC. Noone has done this.
So the long and the short of this is I need visual .net to be able to run the MS emu... Any here doing that? If so can you tell me if it is possible to install other programs for testing, or will the emu only work with applications you are writing yourself?

no it's that that difficult at all sure it takes some time to do
if you look around for emulators many many platforms come as emulated on pc systems like ps2 all the way back to mame
i have a few friends who just made a whole emulation of the arm cpu on the pc not a pocketpc or windows ce emulator but just pure arm

Please, can you provide us with a link? I was very interested in such an emulation to test Xanadux stuff without being afraid to render the Himalaya into a brick
Matthias
they are making it because they are embedded software developers
and they are making a project where they are programming to the arm cpu i dont know if they would part with the code but mind you it's no
pocketpc emulator and i doubt it would even support a graphic display apart from text since they dont need it for the project
i'm sure there must be some emulators out there
i mean the stuff in embedded visual c++ and visual studio 2003 and 2005
even if it's not a true emulator then it comes kinda close
embedded visual c++ does have an emulator, but you cant sync it with active sync and therefore you can only test programs that you are developing yourself. There was a posted solution for this involving a null modem cable and two com ports. But my computer only has one com port :-(
Looks like you need to buy Visual Studio .net to get a fully working emulator that can sync with active x and thus test programs....
Hi there,
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I don't think even getting the .NET framework working with Microsofts PPC 2003 emulator will work as a true emulator for the actual device.
I have the emulators for PPC and SmartPhones installed since we are developing applications for mobile (but mostly Java based) phones. So far with our initial test developments, you can only run your own developed applications or applications that are currently being developed and compiled for the emulators. Final compiled applications (for ARM/MIPS) are different from the compiled versions for the emulators and won't work with it. Being like this, the compiled version for the ARM processors will not work with the PPC emulator.
Well, that is just my comment...
Cheers,
Hey, I haven't tried it yet, but this sure sounds like what we have wanted...

Hey, I just tired it, (installing an ARM app) and it works. Cool!
How do I download that program. or can somebody upload please.

You'll have to create a passport but that shouldn't be a real problem? I tried to upload it to the FTP using upload:upload but it won't let me send the file?
I have to say that this tool / App is one of the best you can find on the Web. I can now emulate the Pocket PC on my PC to trial games / apps first without messing up my XDA2i.
Thanks for the link guys well done!!

I assume you installed the Microsoft ActiveX component called "Microsoft File Transfer Manager" right?
It's the requestor that appears just before the download begins... Then press "transfer" to begin the transfer ..
I hope it works for you...
Rayan
It would be helpful if somebody could upload this program, I am having no success after many attempts to download.
Here you go: ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/DeviceEmulator050419.msi
(better use a 'normal' FTP client to download)
hellooo,
i am looking for a good tutorial to help me get started developing a simple application which will run on a Windows CE 4.1 device and will connect via Wifi to a local sql server and return/store data.
I am a bit lost since i dont even know where to start, i.e. i need visual studio .net alone or another SDK or someting?
any pointers to a suitable tutorial will be much apreciated.
Not too sure what you need for CE4.1 but this is a good place to start
MSDN Windows Mobile
and here's one way for your DB I think
http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/...ry/en-us/dnppcgen/html/intro_winmobile_vb.asp
Haven't looked at the code but you can use either
1)SqlDataAdapter and SqlCommandBuilder to get the results into a DataTable
or
2)SqlDataReader
thanks kev, msdn should have enought info to get me started.
saw that tutorial on msdn but it wont do, since it connects to the sql server via web services or someting, i want to connect directly to the server and execute sql queries.
if you use an oleDBdaptor or sqladaptor it will be transparent for the
system that you are a pda and not a normal pc
wifi is transparent too it's all LAN
Just checkout the classes I mentioned they give examples: SqlDataReader SqlDataAdapter
Has anyone produced a diagnostic tool yet that allows me to interrogate my phone from my laptop to get a memory table of all apps (not user data texts contacts etc) running on the phone to clean up unused apps without having to go into tthe phone menu all the time. If there is a cost for the app, please let me know.
Thank you

What do you mean, to do remote task killing etc?
Check out the Visual Studio remote tools. They are available free in the earlier versions.

Yes I have four devices and two were mine and two given to me for work. Two given to me are fully of apps that I do not want but I want to find out about them before I delete. I know its lazy, but to be able to have
to delete these apps from a single list on my laptop rather than having to do delete each time in the device. Also I can manage my devices better so I can use one for SIM/USIM development work and the business and keep my Wife's and my personal one seperate from business.
Thanks I will google now to find the program.
Many thanks vijay555. If there any SIM/USIM questions I can answer for you just ask.

Actually I might be able to save you some googling:
Just go to www.microsoft.com/downloads and search there.
Unfortunately if I remember correctly, you cannot install remote tools without the studio it self (maybe I am wrong).
Also if you are already working with some IDE for windows mobile like eVC check out 'Remote process viewer' in the tools menu.
Also look for a user called itsme on this form. He created a remote task manager (don't remember if it's just to show tasks or kill them as well).
Check the WiKi for itsmeutils or something like that.

Thanks "levenum" I have taken a note of what you have said and hope I can return the same help to you sometime.
It could be when I've done the research and got the tools that I may have to develop an app. Perhaps I can post here (like I have seen others do) and see if you would be willing to beta test a work in progress.
When complete would be happy to share the final work with the forum.
Thanks again

I'm looking for a program that will download a site (specifically a couple of small forums) on my PC and package it so I can browse it on my Trinity. I dont subscribe to any wireless data services so dont have net access to browse the live site.
Just wanted to have some information handy on my phone when I'm out and about.

I've written several specialized forum saving tools; see for example http://www.winmobiletech.com/mwc/ (really powerful engine knowing a lot of different forum engines but has a steep learning curve) and http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2229&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 (only usable with one forum, 4pda.ru, ATM; but if you know Java, it's very easy to modify it so that it downloads and saves your own forums - you only need to do some HTML parsing)
Of course, there might also be other tools for desktop OS'es - dunno, Google for them. If you don't find any, and you know Java, check out the above apps.
try this program it is completely free, easy to use and works great, if you want to rip a website

Thanks for the links Menneisyys, but I'm not sure if they are what I was looking for specifically. I'm also not a programmer and wouldnt know where to start with Java.

Thanks scousemartin, I've used similar products before (used to like webzip). I'll see how it goes with ripping a site and putting it onto a PDA.
Was hoping for something that worked together on a PC/PDA.

Hi everyone!
I'm studying Turbo Pascal and C programming languages at school,I write console programs from "add 2 numbers and print the result" to something more complex.
I was wondering...is there any way to get these simple console programs to work on my HTC Touch PRO 2 (WM 6.1)?
Hope you can help me...
Thanks!
I 2nd this, I'd like to know too.
Or otherwise I'm also interested in writing a basic app for WM just to try it.
Jason
easy to do with c using embedded visual c++ which you can google and it's free and c++ is always backward compatible with ansi c
doubt you will have much luck with pascal because the best bet would have been borlans options and they quit the whole market with their delphi pascal options
nailing the last nail in the coffin of pascal
For Pascal, use FreePascal/Lazarus combo. It's a ***** to set up, though.

Yeah,i tried that, but i can't make it work...I followed the guide but i can't do anything that works on WM
"Can I write console applications with it,or they have to have a GUI?"
both a lot easier to make console apps though
Thank you,I'll give it a try
The problem you will encounter with console applications is the fact that there is no console as such.
printf() will not work as there is no output window on which to write anything. There is also no way of reading user input direct from the 'keyboard' or keypad.
When the exe is run it starts as a windowless application, the WinMain() function is called and when this ends it is terminated. You can open and close files, read and write to and from them, anything you like, as long as it requires no user input, and does not display anything. Pretty restrictive! The only thing the user will see is the hourglass/busy icon, until the app finishes.
Even C# console applications are subject to the same restrictions.
To do anything 'smart' it will have to be a PPC (GUI) application.
there are plenty of free console apps one can download for free

What if I use Pocket Console,or something like that? Would they run correctly?
Can't really say, as I haven't used them. The console stuff I have written, drags objects from over the net, then writes the data out in a format I can use to a file on the device. No user input required.
All I can suggest is to try the classic
printf("Hello World!\n")
and see what happens. Good Luck!
