Has anyone produced a diagnostic tool yet that allows me to interrogate my phone from my laptop to get a memory table of all apps (not user data texts contacts etc) running on the phone to clean up unused apps without having to go into tthe phone menu all the time. If there is a cost for the app, please let me know.
Thank you

What do you mean, to do remote task killing etc?
Check out the Visual Studio remote tools. They are available free in the earlier versions.

Yes I have four devices and two were mine and two given to me for work. Two given to me are fully of apps that I do not want but I want to find out about them before I delete. I know its lazy, but to be able to have
to delete these apps from a single list on my laptop rather than having to do delete each time in the device. Also I can manage my devices better so I can use one for SIM/USIM development work and the business and keep my Wife's and my personal one seperate from business.
Thanks I will google now to find the program.
Many thanks vijay555. If there any SIM/USIM questions I can answer for you just ask.

Actually I might be able to save you some googling:
Just go to www.microsoft.com/downloads and search there.
Unfortunately if I remember correctly, you cannot install remote tools without the studio it self (maybe I am wrong).
Also if you are already working with some IDE for windows mobile like eVC check out 'Remote process viewer' in the tools menu.
Also look for a user called itsme on this form. He created a remote task manager (don't remember if it's just to show tasks or kill them as well).
Check the WiKi for itsmeutils or something like that.

Thanks "levenum" I have taken a note of what you have said and hope I can return the same help to you sometime.
It could be when I've done the research and got the tools that I may have to develop an app. Perhaps I can post here (like I have seen others do) and see if you would be willing to beta test a work in progress.
When complete would be happy to share the final work with the forum.
Thanks again

I've written several specialized forum saving tools; see for example http://www.winmobiletech.com/mwc/ (really powerful engine knowing a lot of different forum engines but has a steep learning curve) and http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2229&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 (only usable with one forum, 4pda.ru, ATM; but if you know Java, it's very easy to modify it so that it downloads and saves your own forums - you only need to do some HTML parsing)
Of course, there might also be other tools for desktop OS'es - dunno, Google for them. If you don't find any, and you know Java, check out the above apps.
try this program it is completely free, easy to use and works great, if you want to rip a website

Thanks for the links Menneisyys, but I'm not sure if they are what I was looking for specifically. I'm also not a programmer and wouldnt know where to start with Java.

Thanks scousemartin, I've used similar products before (used to like webzip). I'll see how it goes with ripping a site and putting it onto a PDA.
Was hoping for something that worked together on a PC/PDA.
iSilo with iSiloX is made specially for what you want! you might check that out...
Don't get me wrong, I love my WM phone, especially it has so many software + easier to program. However, I found the softwares are not organized and you need to know:
1. where to find the software
2. how to download the software
3. how to install the software from the desktop to the WM device
in order to use a piece of WM software(Not to mentions the serial number, registration number and so)
Where as the iphone "installer", only needed a few click and the software is automationally installed and ready to work. Which allow the Not so hardcore computer user to enjoy software written for iphone. For the Non jailbreaked iphone / ipod touch, iTunes is doing the software distribution work but nothing similar for the WM device.
thats because apple "control" their platform sooo much more
wm everybody can do it the way the like or feel is best
if people pref to do stuff one way it's up to them
and if customors hate that way they can turn to other options
which does it the way they like
imho wanting the general platform to dictate a way to do such things
maybe easier for some
but removes liberties from many more
no, don't get me wrong, I don't want to see an "iTunes" for the WM, that's why I said installer. Anyone can add their software to the installer software list, u know?

Do you mean some sort of web-based list of applications that you can access via ppc to download applications to install?
iTunes
iTunes may sound like a bad idea, but then again it would be nice to be able to download most games/programs etc. from one place/program, instead of searching all over the 'net for good links.
--oh, and yes I've been registered since 2006 and this IS my first post. Guess I've more to learn than to teach
That sound's like a really good idea. It be it's own application (like the Facebook application, just a portal to a website), and have applications categorized by type, number of downloads, new release, etc. Each application could also have reviews, description, screenshots, latest release, bug fixes, etc. I could host it on my server if needed.

Well, it could be a native WM app that download a list of APP Name, Description and Location from the web or it could be a website. However if it is a website, it will be just a duplication of Pocketgear and Handango.
So you want an app that will supply you with all the list of apps available?? Maybe just me, but that sounds lazy, and there are far too many out there, where, as mentioned above, most are through Apple direct. The best thing is Handago's In-Hand, allows you to browse and purchase some software from there site.

Two reasons for me not to vote for Handago or alike:
1. slow > in order to find the app that I needed, I need to go though all the pages (and ad.) which takes all the time and Date limit (not everybody has unlimited data plan)
2. PIE is not powerful enough to load these APP catalog website, so user still have to download through the desktop computer and go through all the steps that I described on the first post.
we only need to download some WM app, not the ad. or other unless graphics on the website, right?
I'm looking for an eWallet app, like Ilium Software's eWallet for PPC, which runs both Desktop (WinDOS and/or Linux) and Android PDA.

This looks good: Splash-ID. Has a desktop client as well. I don't use it so I can't say much else about it.
I personally use B-Folders which is a Free app and works great for me.
Security
I am a little suspicious about installing and using certain apps. Many state that they have full access to the phone and internet, meaning they can send all of my personal information elsewhere...and in an e-wallet application, that can be devastating. A goldmine for ID theft criminals... learn some code, and write an e-wallet application. Make it free and watch the information roll right in!
Can b-wallet be trusted? They are based in Spain and Bulgaria. Not much information out there about them.
Splash ID looks great and legit, but $30 is a ridiculous price for this software. $10 maybe for both desktop and phone.
Like the other guy said, B-folders does the exact same thing Splash ID does, and it's free, they are asking way too much money for that app
Have you considered KeePass?
Open source, no internet access (internet access not requested in the manifest upon install) & has an open source desktop counterpart too!
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-android-keepass-qtw.aspx
I was a long time eWallet user and contacted them recently because they don't have Android or WebOS clients. They said that they have no plans to create anything at this time for other platforms.
Seems like they are not doing well these days. I looked at Splash ID and while it seems okay, they way they license desktop software is insane and I hear that databases are not compatible with other version of their software so if you get a new phone you'd be out of luck.
I am now using CallPod's Keeper. It is very simplistic which I hate but it works with most major phones and desktops (PC & Mac, etc) I run it on my iPhone and Android.
Having used eWallet for a long time, on all platforms (pc, iphone, winmo), I hope they make ewallet for android soon.
Otherwise I have to find a new password program as well...
If enough people mail them, they must sooner or later make an android version
Otherwise I recommend lastpass(.com). Not ecsactly the same as ewallet, but really good. However, it requires internet access...
I am actually hoping for SPB Wallet to made for Android. SPB did announce Mobile Shell for Android so I am hoping they are gonna port more of their software library over as well.
I've been hassling Illium for ages about this, they don't seem interested in the slightest
**EDIT** Hang on, Splash actually charge you more if you buy the desktop and phone client together than if you buy them seperate! How does that work!?!?!
+1 for KeePass.
It is OPEN SOURCE and it does not require internet connection.
And it has desktop app as well, which is good.
For this kind of app which we use to store "sensitive information", I cant easily trust any closed source app.
That's why I am heading to KeePass when I got my Android device (ordered).

Well your wish was partially granted eWallet Viewer.
You can sync with your windows PC and view on your Android, but you cannot add or edit.
awesome, at last..
Now hopefully they do a full version also.. I see a lot of WM6.x users switching to Android at the moment...
double post
Woo hoo!!!!
Finally!
Viewer is good enough for me. It sync's to the desktop too (I've even paid for an upgrade to v7 so this works )
I would like to introduce keywords like AES or encryption on this post. I have been looking on and off for days for an encryption package for Android and pretty much drew a blank, with a couple of notable exceptions. It was only through trying to find out more information about JointLogic (makers of B-Folders) that I stumbled upon this very useful discussion. I also deeply distrust the anonymity of these vendors. I am deeply sorry if I offend them, but these days we are used to look a gift horse in the mouth. JointLogic is trying to make us suspicious of Google with backdoors in their engine, yet we are supposed to trust an anonymous company in who knows where?
I read somewhere that an android version of Ascendo Data Vault could be out sometime soon. Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

worse of all, the viewer has no SEARCH function!!!
After 8 months and still not a peep.
Ok, so I have no experience of working with any type of coding of development except for Adobe Flash. I don't think that really counts though, nor help me here, but I want to start off by saying that I'm simply a 17 year old.
I want to start development of an app to edit the registry. For example, I got the idea for everytime you click a button on the app, it edits something on the registry. Of course, phones will have to be Interop-Unlocked (Which my Samsung Focus is).
So to get on topic, how may I start creating an app for Windows Phone to edit registry and etc.? As I said before, I really don't have much experience, but I would love to learn and help the community.
Thanks in advance.
Bump up....
Ok, basic first steps: do you have the WP7 SDK? You can get it for free, and you'll need it. It includes the tools to build and deploy apps (compilers and so forth).
The project you're talking about is a bit heavy for a first foray into app development, but you can give it a shot. One of the easier ways (for me, at least) to learn things is to look at what other people did, which in coding usually means looking at open source projects. There are a few open-source apps which access the registry.
For example, my MultiTaskToggle app (linked in my sig) works on Samsung and provides an example of how to read and write a specific registry value.
If you want to browse the registry at all, you'll need something different. This can be done, using COM to call native APIs. Look at the Homebrew library (used by the Webserver projects, among others) or WP7 Advanced Explorer (open source, code is on Codeplex). These types of project have two parts: managed (.NET code, typically in C#) that calls the COM interface, and native (C/C++, written using the Windows Mobile SDK) that implements the COM object.
You may want to do some research online to get started, either here on XDA-Devs (though I think most tutorials here assume at least basic knowledge) or elsewhere (even from MS directly) if you're really starting from scratch.
Recently I've been trying to teach myself how to develop for our phone, but I'm using a Mac. I have a Windows Partition, and can run Windows on my Mac, but it's a pain to have to restart just to use a single program for whatever it is that I need done. So I've done some research and thought it would be nice to share all the programs that I've found that help in Android Development.
It would also be nice if other Mac Users would share what they have found as well or what they use when trying to accomplish certain tasks when working with android. So here goes:
--Android SDK--
This is rather obvious…that being said you can download this from android.com. However, if you chose to install Eclipse I find installing the SDK from Android to be rather Redundant, if you agree go on and read the part about Eclipse.
--Wine/MacPorts/xCode--
First, sometimes it's useful to use Windows programs on Mac, and an one quick way to do that without having to reboot is with Wine. It takes a while to set up, but it is useful for running MOST executables. The last two programs you install as part of the tutorial, so follow on:
So here is the website I used to set up Wine: http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/
All of his instructions are accurate excluding where he talks about installing xCode. It is OK to install xCode through the App Store, all you have to do afterwards is install Command Line Tools. To do this:
1. Open xCode
2. Open Preferences (cmd+,)
3. Click the Downloads tab
4. Use the link to create an Apple Dev account
5. Click Command Line Tools
Now you can continue to follow the rest of the Tutorial
--Eclipse--
This program is useful for creating Android Applications on your phone. If you choose to install Eclipse I would follow this guide once you're done. I realize it is for creating Android Applications but it also explains how to set up a working environment.
So here is the website I used to set up Eclipse: http://www.vogella.de/articles/Android/article.html
I would start at section 5.1
Also Eclipse can be used for compiling .9.png files…I found a good tutorial for this on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487001
Go hit damnitpud's thank meter if you find his thread useful
--APK Manager--
I found this tool extremely useful for pulling APK's and pushing them to your phone. This app can be used for Themeing apks, or editing the XML files.
I found this application on XDA as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285130
Go hit s0niq3's thanks button, maybe it'll convince her that people actually care about her program.
--android-utility or AU--
This little program looks to be extremely useful, I found it while searching for a way to compile .9.png files without having to use Eclipse. But it also has a host of other applications and uses. Make sure you read the thread thoroughly and follow all instructions.
I found this application on XDA as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167623
Go hit tommytomatoe's thanks button as well, he gave us a marvelous little program. There is also a version for windows now, well at least part of it.
[For windows, and Linux Users: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272513]
Go hit kakomalo's thanks button
If you download the version 1.0.1 and you try to compile a .9.png file, and you receive an error telling you that aapt is missing, all you have to do is drag and drop the aapt from the Android SDK into /android-utility/utility/
--xUlitimate--
I'm not sure if this one is worth mentioning for Mac, but it would be kinda cool if someone figured out how to get this to work with Wine…so here it is:
So here is its link: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
This one has some theme tools. I found it specifically for the Draw9Patch Compiler, but I could not get it to work nicely with wine.
--Gimp--
This one is well known, so I don't think it needs much explanation…but it is image editing software.
Here is the download link if you don't already have it: http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html
---Finally
After spending hours searching, downloading, and finding out what works I thought I would share to save someone else the expense of having to go through the trial and error. I would love it if other Mac Users, or any one else would share their knowledge on programs they use when working with Android; to theme, compile ROMs, or any other activity related to Android while pertaining to Mac.
Also, if you mess up your computer while doing this it is your own responsibility
Don't know why you haven't got any thanks for this, here's one from me for a very detailed and informative post. I am not a Mac user but thanks for your contribution.
Well I guess I just gave you your first thanks!
This post should be a little useful for Mac users... especially those that don't understand Unix.
Developing on Mac can be very similar to developing on Linux. Mac is just slightly more GUI oriented. Unix commands are the same, though.
So Linux users could use this guide as well!
EDIT: After I posted... I noticed 4 more users had thanked you as well... o-o that was fast
Haha oh thanks guys! After the first couple of days I thought my thread was going to get swallowed up. I'm starting to think that Mac Users are rare amongst Android developers. I do realize that other Unix OSs like Ubuntu are favored more, but sometimes it's a pain to run these back and forth. I've even tried to VM UBUNTU, but I had a problem getting the USB to interface with the program, whether it was how I sent it up, or the program itself I have no idea. So I went out looking for alternatives. There is always triple booting I suppose.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
I'm use a Mac at my office, and not by choice. Thank you for this extremely helpful post!
Great guide for anyone who is looking to start developing for Android. Better yet, for people who need to get the jist of what is going on in UNIX!
