[Q] Backed Up System Apps Not Installing - Verizon Droid Charge

When I got my phone, I rooted the phone without removing or modifying the stock ROM, just used Odin to give me root, so I was left with my stock experience. Yesterday, mostly because of the constant nagging of the uninstallable OTA update that Verizon kept sending me, I flashed the Tweaked Gingerbread ROM to my phone, and it's working fine, except that it removed all of my Samsung apps for some strange reason (every other app, and its data was left intact).
The problem is I used the Samsung screen capture utility, the stocks widget, and the Samsung keyboard. I thought that even though they were removed, my foresight in backing up my ROM using CWM's built-in NANDroid backup would be beneficial. So I used Nandroid Browser to look up my apps that were missing. The first one I found was the screen shot service, so I opened that with the package manager, and it seemed to open just fine, and gave me this:
www(dot)thecdrive(do)com/images/shot_000002.png
So I clicked Install, and it then gave me this:
www(dot)thecdrive(dot)com/images/shot_000003.png
Why is installing these backed up apps failing? And also, why is there a green "success!" check mark next to the failure message? I thought it succeeded before I read the message, lol.

Nandroid backups are rather problematic for this device. You can get some of your apps back through Tweaktools.
And the stock screencap and keyboard SUCK.

Frankly that's your opinion. I can't find a better screen capture application, and the "Android Keyboard" and the other strange one that the ROM came with don't work correctly. That aside, is "Tweaktools" on my ROM or do I need to obtain it from somewhere?

My opinion...and everyone else's. ShootMe is a much better screencap alternative, and SwiftKey 3 is the best keyboard I've used, though some prefer others. Swype (the "other" keyboard that you say doesn't work but you probably don't know how to use it) is also pretty good for one handed typing.
Obviously you haven't read the OP in the Tweaked thread, otherwise you would know Tweaktools is easily accessible through Terminal. Or, you could download a stock ROM zip and pull out the apks you want from /system/app and put them in your own /system/app.

The popular opinion does not mean it's the right opinion for me... The "Other" keyboard is NOT Swype (That was also removed from my phone when the ROM was installed) it's called "Eyes-Free keyboard". Also, I very much know how to use Swype, my ex loved the stupid thing, and I hate it. I prefer a normal keyboard. I will look up SwiftKey. Does insulting someone's intelligence make you feel better about yourself?

No, it's just -slightly- annoying when people ask the same exact questions all the time, but REALLY annoying when you're helping someone who acts like they're entitled to other experienced user's assistance (read: have a stick up their ass).
I've never heard, seen, or used this "Eyes free" keyboard. Maybe it's something that comes stock, but I would never know since I spent about one day stock.

Excuse me? Entitled? Hardly. I asked a question of anyone on this forum, because I could not find a solution to the specific problem I was having. I asked why restoring .apk files from Nandroid backups was failing, and you replied by pushing YOUR OPINION in my face, as if using the Samsung keyboard was a crime. In absolutely NO WAY was I demanding or acting entitled to anything. I simply asked a question, and expected a reply that wasn't condemning my choice in software!
In short, I appreciate your suggestions (I really do, Tweaktools worked fine for everything but the keyboard) but I don't appreciate your Elitist attitude. Sure you know more about the inner workings of this telephone than I, but that gives you absolutely no right to talk down to people who are only trying to learn.
Edit: Also "Eyes-Free" came with the ROM not with my phone. My phone shipped with the Samsung Keyboard, and Swype. That's it. This ROM replaced the Samsung keyboard with the Android keyboard, and Swype with Eyes Free.

They aren't. Swype is owned by Nuance and SwiftKey is owned by TouchType. SwiftKey is TouchType's only product and there isn't a free version, other than the demo. Nuance has a free beta of Swype and they also own the Dragon TTS products.

Came across other versions (eg 10814) that did not work.
Perform an "upgrade" of the package and dictionary is saved.
Hope this makes it easier for you guys to find a working version!

Almost every person on this forum that likes Swype has said that they would buy it if it was available. Closing a Beta and making APKs that expire only leave people with limited choices. Either find a copy that works, or choose another product. If you make someone have to buy another product, why would they switch back to your product once its ready, especially if you have to pay for that one as well?
That being said, Ultra Keyboard seems awesome. I will probably buy it after my trial is up unless I find something about it I don't like. Thank you for the suggestion.

just checked this out via the free trial, definitely doesnt seem like a bad alternative. i recommend trying it out if you, like me, cant find a working swype link.
I am trying ultra keyboard. It has more features than swype, but so far it seems less accurate. In other words, I make a lot more mistakes. It could be a matter of getting used to. Also, the keyboard is ugly compared to the red Swype version which was beautiful.
I'm in Swype beta, this is my current version. Although mine ends with 10912.t100
Not sure if that matters or means anything.

Anyone having issues with it, try out SlideIT - I have used them both and love the responsiveness and accuracy of SlideIT>Swype. I have no affiliation with it, just giving my sure to be met with harsh criticism opinion lol
I am not interested in the morality of possessing "swyped" software, or the argument thereof. I am also not interested in the substitutes-i have tried them and don't care for them. I am simply concerned with locating a functional version of swype
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
All these different versions of swype being canceled over and over again is really annoying
Nice! It's great to be swyping again. Confirmed working on my Incredible running Virtuous v3.0.1. It also looks a lot cleaner than the version 1.61.37.8128 of swype I was running previously which had "expired" yesterday.
Ultra is better than slide it. I would gladly pay for swype if they made it available on the market.
Ultra does have allot of features but not as accurate as swype.

The upgrade also works for me, using Skyraider vanilla 3.0 RC. I don't understand swype's strategy. Why don't they just put it on the market? I'd pay for it.

Maybe we need two versions of Cognition...

I don't know if it's the right place, I just hope DG can see this.
Anyway, every time DG updates Cognition Rom, we can see him switching from Touchwiz to Stock Launcher, or switching back, for different reasons. The same thing happens to the lock screen.
For example, this time DG removed Touchwiz for its laggy, but someone like me really don't care that little lag, I just think the transparent background of the app drawer is much cooler than the stock one...yeah, maybe I'm a weirdo...
Since nothing can make everyone happy, why not just make two of them at each edition, one is more Sammy and the other is more Stock?
Or take some time to learn how it works and you can put it back in yourself. That's the beauty, imho, of the android. You can make it fit yourself. DG is doin' what rox his sox, he's just offerin' it up to us unwashed masses.
I've gotten to where I can make the phone look any way I want and this is my first android phone. Patience and diligence. You can do it too.
ive pretty much learned how to put everything i like in place. launcher, keyboards, etc. the only thing im trying to learn is how to get my preferred lockscreen into any given rom. Is there anyone who can teach me or point me to some references so i can start learning how to do this.

[KEYBOARD] Stock Gingerbread Keyboard without smiley key

That damn smiley key was driving me insane, so I got the Gingerbread keyboard source from AOSP, got it to compile, and got rid of the smiley face button, replacing it with a return key. Other than that, it's identical to the stock Android gingerbread keyboard, so requires 2.3+. Eventually I may figure out how to make it able to be turned on and off, but that would rather defeat the point. Enjoy!
(Note: you have to enable it in the Keyboard settings before you can use it, just like any other keyboard.)
The Eclipse project (source) is available here.
hate to break it to you but people did that months ago lol. I've been using this exact keyboard since before Christmas I think, right down to the removed smiley key haha
Still, at least you got some practice....

Really? Cause I have never found such a keyboard. I found one that the smily key works as a space and then doesn't work after that, and I found a modified smiley key one where the "-" is removed.
Wish this worked with Android 2.2. Is it safe to try?
I won't use this this I use Smart Keyboard Pro, but props for taking matters into your own hands..

I guess it's safe in that it won't damage anything, but it also won't install I may be able to recompile it in a way that makes it play nice with froyo, but I haven't tried yet. Maybe I will today.
Also, I did find the same thing somewhere else, but if I'm not mistaken it had a theme I didn't like and the method to get rid of it wasn't worth the time for me. If nothing else, I got to practice compiling individual apps from the AOSP
EDIT: I had no luck getting it to work with 2.2. I updated the OP with the Eclipse project source if anyone wants to give it a shot.

I own Smart Keyboard Pro, but my only complaint is that it's laggy and slow. Compared to the stock Gingerbread Keyboard or the one in the market by Steven Lin, those fly and pump out rapid letters when you are typing fast, but with Smart Keyboard Pro, it lags behind, and it frustrates me.

Why Swype is better, way better, than SwiftKey

Since i stepped into Android, by one thing i was amazed and it was/is Swype. Then other keyboards appeared and SwiftKey X was the most popular among them. So i used it for two weeks to see how good and efficient it is then went back to Swype. Why? The video proves why.
I am on 102°F while i was typing (in fact that's the reason why i have done this video as i had nothing to do, lol), so take 30-45 seconds out from both the video.
I would like to find a more simpler article as base, but couldn't find any by simple Googling.
Regards.
PS: If already this has been done by some fellow member please pardon me, i haven't searched
I agree with you totally, imho after swype any other keyboard in android makes me sad panda =(
I actually like SwitKey better... but I use Swype. I like being able to type with one hand.
P.S. not sold on the new Swype beta - I love the prediction, but it seems to be a bit of a hog.
I am a FlexT9 man myself..
No offense, but you seem to be pretty slow at typing and I think that's why you are faster with Swype. I think it really comes down to peoples personal typing styles. I am a fast typer but end up making a decent amount of mistakes especially with the stock HTC keyboard. I recently started using the trace function on the stock keyboard on my Evo 3D (custom ICS rom though) which is basically the same thing as Swype. While I did enjoy it more than normal typing and it made me faster, I ended up correcting a lot of errors and inputting new words. I then bought Swiftkey 3 and after setting it up, fell in love. It's just a lot smarter than Swype. It's like it knows what I want to say before I even start typing. Also I love the new cobalt theme they have.
So it really depends on your personal typing styles.
I use the stock HTC keyboard, which has Swype-like "trace input" (basically a blatant clone of Swype, but IMO a nicer looking keyboard; I did install Swype before I found the option to enable trace input) and I think it is absolutely fantastic. However, on my Blackberry Playbook, the built in (and non-changeable ) keyboard is made by SwiftKey, and is apparently very similar to the Android version, only themed differently. I have to say it is quite excellent, it can often predict the next word I want to use, preventing me even having to type some words at all, and at times only makes me type the first letter or two before it guesses. Main reason I haven't tried it on Android is because it costs, and I am perfectly happy with the HTC keyboard, which is free.
If there was some amalgamation between Swype and SwiftKey, with the swyping of Swype and the prediction of SwiftKey, it would undoubtedly be my keyboard of choice.
Stock ICS keyboard FTW!
I prefer the one handed operation of Swype 3.25. Swiftkey has been ruined. I used to use it and its pumpkin theme because it disabled the keypress pop up. Now it's in every theme. And there is still no dedicated enter key.
The new Swype sucks, after nuance bought them out. I hate the mandatory Swype connect process that runs, the large footprint, etc.. 3.25 is probably the last acceptable version. If anyone has apk's of builds produced after 3.25, please post them as I'd love to try them out.
Also if anyone has a stock ics keyboard apk that was pulled from a ROM, not the market version, post that too please.

I did notice that and consider it, but to be honest, the screen on my phone is a bit cramped for "proper" typing, so I decided to stick with my HTC trace input. I'd probably only go for SwiftKey if it added a swype/trace like function.

I have used lots of keyboards of every type and I always come back to Swype. I like Swiftkey's prediction but I've had tough life with predictions. And anyway, my main concern is the speed which Swype most definitely provides me. It depends on your typing habits and screen size, of course.

I always liked ai type until I tried the SwiftKey beta. My only wish is that SwiftKey would do voice to text like Ai type does using the ics real time transcription rather than the old one. I never liked swype mainly because I drive for a living so my use case makes it tough to swype and drive. Much easier to peck but even easier still to speak.

I used swype quite a lot but found it would remember everything I'd typed. So it would end up changing the correct word to a captcha I'd typed in months ago. Now I use SwiftKey to get round that problem

If you have a passcode you can't pull it down. And that is for obvious reasons, because if you have passcode on your phone you obviously don't want random people getting into it or seeing stuff, so that's why the notification bar can't be pulled down.
As for your iphone comment, if you really wanna use a **** phone, with **** tweaks then go ahead and get it. But the reasoning for it not being pulled down while having a passcode is obvious.
Oh and it works PERFECT on my S3 running AOSP Jellybean incase you were wondering

Well then, first welcome. Next though the more details you can give the better. You'll find that the community here wants to help, but can only do that if they understand the problem.
Also, I can promise android is easier to tweak and easier to save if you screw up. It us just a learning curve, but one you get it you'll love it m just remember make sure you read what you are doing, search for answers and if you still don't understand ask.

Well for future reference if you give more details then this isn't working. You might get an answer that helps. Your op said nothing about security lock codes or even what ROM you are on. So the answer of just pull down was reasonable.

you must have never used a iphone with a jailbreak. easier to mod. 1000s of more tweaks that you can select through a simple app store. Not ones that come with a ROM.

You're right. The must I ever did was jail break and unlock to increase resale, but it was a pain. However, that was probably my learning curve. Either way I prefer to tweak by swapping out ROMs radios, etc.
Hey you might want to check out the pimp ROM app. It lets you select a bunch of tweaks from a simple to use app. Kind of like cydia.

Thanks. Eh. Every tweak seems to be on Google play. Not all work for this phone. And not very many. They ones that come with a ROM are okay. But I got them all on the iPhone too. Even with toogles on a widget.
Let's say if I wanted my lock screen to show up one when I'm not on my home WiFi. I could. Or password anything. Photo albums. Folders. Apps. I mean you can do that on here somewhat. But toggles for it would be nice. I phones are a lot easier to tweak. All tweaks are categorized in a appstore. Cydia is nice. Sorry die hard jailbreak fan.. lol
Hate how the keyboard on here takes the whole screen in landscape mode. Hate that the most. Lol. Its annoying. Also the notifications for apps and such on here are horrible! No badge numbers. Nothing! Lol. Sucks. Android is okay for the average user I guess. But someone who wants to tweak there phone to their liking with themes, boot logos, security, overclocking(think that's what its called in android world) lol, choose iPhone 4s or above.
Just was sitting here bored. Sorry to go off topic. Haha

Android phones are for the average user? It's more like iPhones are for the average user. What I'm wondering is why in the world did you get an android phone if you're a die-hard jailbreak fan?
As for being bored, why not flash some roms, kernels, themes, etc.

No the official ROM. You'll get more of the iPhone feel.

guess you right in that sense, that the iphone is for the average user. but once it is jailbroken. Probably like flashing all this stuff to your phone as you call it. All this is in, Cydia, the modified app store for all of this stuff you mention. You can add and remove tweaks to any iOS without having to "flash" anything. Of course it can get complex.
I have a friend who works for Verizon who convinced me into trying a Android. Plain and simple. iPhone will be my next upgrade. lol.
Maybe im not doing my searching right or my google history needs erased again. But all I want on my phone is apps installed directly to SD card. (read this wasn't possible). Its okay if it's not possible. notification badges. None seem to work on my ROM for some reason. (CM10 latest nightly). Well I take that back, SMS does. Their all enabled to in settings, gMail, phone, SMS.. Also now I have to go to my app drawer to click on a call to answer it. doesnt stay on my screen to accept. More themes. Seeing them on Google play. Their mostly ugly. maybe it's the lack of retina display. But nothing fancy either in the same line. I'll keep searching and asking i guess.

I'd recommend trying out different AOSP roms, such as Liquid Smooth, Paranoid Android, King Kong, AOKP, and get a sense of each one. You can also download Nova or Apex launcher and they'll both give you more options for notification badges. Stock AOSP android is pretty plain but that's the point of it though, The customization is up to you
I'll look into them. Im running CM10 ROM now. It's not bad. It'd probably be much greater if I could get my apps to store on external SDCard instead of internal. I'll keep looking them ROMs or whatever you mentioned to see if they have anything i'm looking for..
