[Q] Turning off capacitive button lights? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

CM7 used to have this functionality built in, but CM9 does not. I think it was a mod called "Backlight Dimmer". Is there any way to get it to work on CM9? If not does anyone have a recommendation of a build/rom that has it?

Flash a kernel supporting BLN/BLD such as Matr1x. Then install the app called NSTools.

Yeah, but that doesn't turn off the buttons' light completely, they still blink when you touch them.

turn on BLD and set to zero.

Notifications

Hello I have had my NS4G for a month and through all the fun and excitement of unlocking and rooting it I noticed that when I get any type of notification that my LED lights don't come on at all. I actually don't think they ever did. Am I trippin or is it supposed to be that way lol.

There is no notification LED on this phone... so to answer you, its perfectly normal
Ty now I can stop thinking I was crazy.

Try a kernel with bln support as a workaround

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036991
With BLN app from market.
Noled is another alternative. If you're interested in trying that (no special kernel required) I can give you the settings I found that work well. It took some trial and error to get them the way I like them.

Thanks for all the help I might try some of them. I just wanted to confirm my sanity lmao

Ok so I flashed a custom kernel using kernel manager but now I can't use wifi tether

Noled isn't that great of an app. For some reason when there is a notification, the soft touch buttons at the bottom of the phone stay lighted.
Also, the screen isn't pure black when the notifications come on. It has this greyish hue to it. Totally not liking the app.

Do you know if the LED lights go back to full brightness after I turn on my screen?

No they don't. They stay at the setting in the app. Paul put it out its quality
Edit: this should be in the Q&A section

Do I know if I NEED the service running 24/7 on order to work?

If your using the app, yes the service MUST run. If its built into the kernel\ROM like CM7, then you dont even need the app
You shouldn't be running a task killer anyway. Android manages its services by itself killing system apps on a regular basis can make apps that need to be running in the back ground start again wasting battery. Plus your phone will act strange after awhile. You shouldn't use them.
Again this belongs in Q&A

Moved to proper forum.
Too bad I didn't read this thread earlier, I figured this out on my own today, doing the same thing, I changed my brightness to 1 (the lowest it would stay lit) , I do think this would definitely help out on battery life.

The Touch Key Lights app DOES NOT works properly with
1) Cyan 7 mod
I am using stock Android now, it works like a charm
One touch, and the program changes the value FOREVER (even after reboots, after I re-insert the battery...)

[Q] BLN Notification

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything related to my issue. I'm trying to get BLN Notification lights to work on my Nexus S, and I've already tried a few kernels, netarchy, matr1x, and trinity, but they all have the same result. The light shows up for one or two seconds, then it turns off. I've also tried the SuperOSR rom and the same thing happens. I'm currently using MIUI.us 1.9.16. Is this how it's supposed to be? Any suggestions?
PS, a couple times, it did stay on (until I turned the screen on), but it is not consistent.
Thanks.

Do you have the bln pro app from the market?
if the skies the limit, where's the urgency?
Nope, but I do have the free version installed.
Urgency? No urgency... Did I do something wrong? :S
Yep

You need the pro version to edit the settings.

Nah don't worry, a mod should move it anyways

Alright, thanks.. Sorry about this..
It should still work even with the free version shouldn't it?
Hmm, I thought the blinking can only be accomplished with the pro version... Can someone attest to this plz?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Actually, I don't want it to blink. I'm fine with just the static light, and the problem is that the light does not stay on. I understand that the static light is available for the free version and blinking requires the pro version.

It's not blinking that he's talking about. For me I get a notification then the BLN turns on, 2 seconds later it turns off. If I wake the display without unlocking the phone then turn the display off again the BLN will turn back on and stay on indefinitely. But the initial BLN only lasts 2 seconds.
I'm also on the Free version.

Yup, that's exactly my situation. I also noticed that after it turns off, and you tap it, it'll stay on.

I didn't notice that but same here! Tapping it after it turns off does indeed turn it back on indefinitely. I'm on the latest TEUV kernel btw.

And I don't feel like downloading the app to turn it off ^^
Maybe it has something to do with bld?

Lol I wish I had your issue. Only reason I like BLN is because I can make my phone not wake up when receiving a notification and instead just display the backlights. Saves on battery I think.

Isn't mathkids kernel bln baked in so it works without a program? It shouldn't be the apps problem if it wont work on matrix. Check any scripts you have running that will interfere

Have the same problem ever since using MIUI..
anyone got a fix?
EDIT
Guys i found the fix from a fellow XDA member here.
You need to enable LED from settings, personal, LED settings.
Strange since i thought those settings attained only to phone with dedicated LED's, but apparently not!

Nexus S 4g questions

I am having few things i noticed with my phone don't know if anyone else is having it-
Back button doesn't work in any setting or app. For example if I go to phone settings disable Bluetooth back key is not lit, have to click on home and start over.
GPS takes forever to lock .
Phone doesn't have a led for missed calls, is there a app which can do bln.
phone is running stock rom (2.3.7) and its not rooted
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Check out noled. It works pretty well.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
The back button should work. I'd say there is something wrong there. For the other things like bln you'll need to install a kernel which supports it. That requires that you root your phone.
No back button doesn't work its not lit.

You're 12 years old aren't you? Lol jk
Yes I realize that. I'm not saying I don't belive you I'm just stating that it should work and if it doesn't then there is something wrong with ether the hardware or software on your phone. Best bet would be to root it and flash a ROM from scratch.

[Q] Notification light for Nexus S

I was wondering if there was a mod or something that could enable an LED light like such for the Nexus s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyWufbpSLpw

Use a kernel with BLN support. It will use your captivate buttons as a makeshift LED notification.'

Does it work well?
Well, sort of. When I had my Vibrant, I could make the buttons really pop out and see them from across the room. With this, if I can see the buttons, then I have a notification. If I don't see any buttons, then it's because the lights are off. It's not as bright and nice as the Vibrant, but at least I can look and see if I have notifications. If you use CM10, there is an option in settings for it, under Advanced.
You can try this app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.led.notify&hl=fr
Works well, no need for specific kernel
