If you don't want to do custom ROMs you could do custom kernels and such, from there you can customize cpu clock frequencies as well as voltages (if you want to go that route). Theres probably a few audio tweaks out there, might need to search for them such as using Beats or Equalizers etc... I use System Tuner on my phone but that will also require you to root your phone which would mean having to install CWM as well.

New To Android - Nexus S questions

So on the 10th I bought my first Android phone. I picked up a Nexus S, because I like things pure and untouched as far as the OS goes, I didn't want to be required to use a custom rom in order to remove HTC Sense, Motoblur, TouchWiz or whatever.
I also like the fact that the update process is much quicker on Google Nexus phones then on the other branded phones. I have no issues with the base Android 2.3 and Im really getting use to it. But I am curious about some of the issues I have read about with the Nexus S and custom kernels. I am going to root my phone. I did find the how-to on that.
Now I am curious about the custom kernels. I do have linux experience on the back end with some of my workstations I use. But I was thinking about if I could go the route of doing these things without needing to completely reflash a custom kernel.
I would like to switch my phone completely to EXT4 and yes I even mean the 16GB internal for the speed boost and performance. I would like to install a better kernel that allows for the VooDoo Audio (I have noticed a few of the audio issues with my phone) and also the BrainFuckScheduler option as well. Could someone please help point me in the right direction for these or maybe with some how-tos.
As far as mounting my phone's internal SD for storage. I can use it on my linux box for EXT4 support if i need to copy files over. but I am using wireless sync for my music and movies so that shouldn't be a major issue.
You could flash netarchy's kernel in the dev section. It essentially has all that you're asking for: BFS, voodoo sound, and ext4 hack. It comes clocked at stock speed unless you choose to overclock it.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
So what would be the best recommended option, as far as battery and performance goes is the stock ROM great or would a custom ROM really fair me much better performance and battery power.
When I mean stock I mean the stock ROM with the custom kernal with extra additions like ext4.
by the way that ext4 will change all mount points over to ext4 correct? requiring a wipe of the phone and start from stratch

I'd be interested in hearing everyones opinion as well.
So far, I've installed CM7 (now on RC1) and Netarchy's 1.2.3 CFS kernel. I just installed the kernel from Team Whiskey today and can't tell if it's either faster or better with battery. Would be interested in hearing what the community has to say about that. One difference is that the Team Whiskey kernel can OC up to 1.6 if your phone can handle it.
CM7 does seem to do better than the stock kernel, but I dont' think any of the custom launchers beat the stock launchers in terms of buttery smooth app drawer. I think it's because the stock one is hw accelerated but none of the other launchers are.
Installing the ext4 mod will not wipe your phone. There's a forum in the development section with the mods that you need. You will have to root your phone though (there's also a way to do that without wiping your phone, check the forum).
Hope that helps, and I hope other people weigh in on the kernel question.
I have rooted my phone, I choose to not unlock the bootloader cause after looking it, it doesn't seem like something I really need for what I want to do.
I installed the Trinity Stock kernel which has Voodoo Audio, BFS, and says EXT4 with no overclocking.
I ran a quadrant and my highest scores after 3 runs in a row where:
Stock Kernel: 1660
Trinity Kernel: 1675
Im not sure if there really is a major performance improvement or not or am I missing something here. The audio does sound better and the analog control of the headphone amp is amazing.

I get 2100+ with CM7 + Netarchy 1.2.3 CFS; also, benchmarking doesn't really mean much. it doesn't record the performance on a daily basis.
I highly recommend trying out CM7; you could perform a nandroid backup; wipe dalvik/cache/factory and then flash CM7 and gapps. Don't like it? (I seriously doubt it; you wont be disappointed) then just nandroid restore and you're back to where you were before
P.S. I'm not responsible if you get addicted to flashing ROMs

How is CM7 so much better than the stock ROM as far as increasing the performance? And is there a good how-to to get it flashed to the most recent build and also to return to stock if I'm not happy
I tried the Netarchy kernel and its benching at 2425 on the stock 2.3.2 ROM, and it boots so much faster and feels overall snappier after a bit of use. LOVE THIS!!!
So I got things figured out still working on customization a bit, figured I would try out some launchers and things, right now Im using LauncherPro.
But my main questions now are how do yall encode video for your phones? I have tried a few settings on HandBrake and they seem to crash doubletwist and not play in the default media player. So if someone could help me with the settings yall use, perfer not to get another application cause I use Handbrake for other encoding needs as well.
Does anyone know of any widgets that will show me the cell strength and my data connection type (wifi, 3g, edge) so that I can move those to my home screen and not be required to have the notification bar.

Video Player: I recommend RockPlayer, you don't have to encode anything. it plays it natively with the exception of 720p (sadly.. 720p, it lags.. but everything else is fine).

Dear Friends,
For those who love visiting the Development section of this forum, you would notice that there are many firmwares available. Also these firmwares have corresponding Custom Roms made by our great developers.
Therefore i would like to ask, which is the most fast, stable and battery effecient firmware for our phone ...
In other words , which firmware, truely Fits the Fit ????

Well,,,,i feel that the de-odexed KPL (2.3.4) firmware with FITDroidv2.0 custom Rom ......both of them are by VISHWANATH PATIL!...i am using it and its supercool, fast, energy efficient and super stable!
if you want official firmware go for Gingerbread DDKQ5
and
if you want custom firmware go for Fitdroid it is very fast than official firmware. and it supports darktremor app2sd which completly moves all apps to SD
and saves a lot of internal memory space;-)
Thanks Vaibhav,
Have seen the post of the entire rom containing darktremor app2sd bundled with the Custom Rom. Could u pls tell me if we move the apps that are actually meant to be on the phone memory, will it affect their working or performance??
KK
I flashed the deodexed XXKPL firmware, FitDroid, Blue Steel theme in the same order.............I must say it is working perfectly and just one bug I feel is that the music player force closes when opened

No even if you move apps from phone memory to sdcard you won't se any performance issues

If you want to save some battery life
try using JuicedDefender it saves a little bit of battery
or use SETCPU and select profile which is best for you
Pratyush creed's rom v1.0
I tested all most all the roms and i found creed's rom v 1.0 is the best for me.
Ram utilization is very low when phone is idle and so the battery performance is better.
Speed is much better than other roms
check the details in development section
cyanogen 7
cyanogen mod 7 n the overcock kernel are the best combo
curious...
Aren't there bugs on cyanogen7? and how about the overclock kernel? are there any negative effects on Fit?

No there not many bugs in cyanogenmod 7.1.0
the only bugs that i hate its
1.FM does not work even if e use spirit fm app
2.USB tethering does not works
But it can be fixed using weird tether app
And the 801 mhz kernel its little unstable
I faced random reboot issues
So I'm using 763 mhz kernel its stable
And it don't have any issues

well, what if i want to use FM? as i have a favorite radio show in the morning, is there an alternative or fix for this?
How about the battery consumption if i have OC? Will OC have any effects on the processor of Fit?
sorry for having too many questions...
According to my test spirit fm radio doesnot work so tgere is no alternative of it till now
Secondly battery consumption depend on how much do you overclock your processor for eg 700mhz will consume less battery then 800 mhz overclck produces more heat and strain on processor so it can damage your processor over overclock your procesor than stable overclocking

hmm....dont have an alternative for fm...but as far as oc is concerned i too want it to be ported to FitDroid..and dont worry its in progress!...and we'll get it soon....battery backup will definitely be an issue ...i use overclock only while playing games..and i get a nice battery backup!
galaxy fit + CM7.1 (2.3.7) + 801Mhz
I definitely know that there will be an issue with battery consumption which is quite acceptable... but with regards the OC itself, let me compare it to a regular desktop PC...
Say i did overclock my processor, there are definitely a possibility to fry the board or make it overheat, can the same thing happen here?

No i don't see any heating issues,
After OC if you properly configure setcpu
according to your use then battery life is not a big issue
And try internet radio apps such as spotify
or Pandora instead of spirit fm app

Its upon you if you want performance than set it to Max clock speed and select performance governer....
Or if battery life than select conservative governer
And try setting profiles to save battery
While screen is off and while specific time
razodroid v2.3
razodroid v2.3 is the best which also has a oc kernel file which supports upto 801mhz and its very stable....+it has darktremour app2sd app so not problems of low internal memory...and it comes with a cyan coloured appearance which is also cool...the battery stays alive upto 2 days for normal use...the only dwarback is that when we change the dpi of the phone...the music app FCs...but dats ok.....
just wait for razodroid v4.0
RazoDroid 4.0 is the best (ADRENALINE SCRIPT)
Highly recommended, speedy, battery efficient, and a very good UI

Extracting tweaks from RoMs.

I believe most of us here have been flashing various roms. Some roms give us more satisfaction than the rest.
However, it is difficult to have the best features of every rom. Is there anyone who knows where the core tweaks of the rom are located? Share your experiences and knowledge in this thread!
Anyone?

Some are in build.prop while some are scripts (system/etc/init.d) and are executed at boot. If you download a ROM from a recognized and well reputed dev, its best not to pile tweaks on tweaks. Not only will they conflict but the tweaks of that specific ROM were put there for optimum performance of that specific ROM. Some tweaks are global anyway. If you want stuff like setting GPU I/O fraction to 50 you could use the script from hypersensation (init.d) but then again those scripts are easy enough to write. What kind of tweaks are you referring to??
Thanks for the reply. I am looking at more to the gaming tweaks. Like 3d performance etc.

Gaming performance relies strongly on the kernel. Faux is probably the best in this field but of course with heavy use drains your battery. The best roms I've encountered for gaming are reverted AOSP and lee Droid sense 3.0 version and lee kernel. I doubt there are many tweaks in the ROM itself for gaming purposes. A ROM running bricked would not play as smooth as faux but would have better battery. The roms I mentioned are just what I use btw

That depends on if your rooted or not I suppose. If not then it's just mainly conservation tips like if your app has resources on the sdcard, like many of the shooters I have seen do, then having a fast sd card will help. Class 10 would ideal but not mandatory
Where as if you are rooted you can try some scripts like v6 super charger and others, you can use a custom kernel and overclock your cpu and gpu ( go easy on it as you can really damage the phone if you go nuts on it) and then the phone will run faster. Another idea with root would be to delete non used system apps to save ram space, but remember before doing any of this do a nandroid back up
