[Q] Power button hard to press

Hi,
My transformer has the power button which is terribly hard to press.
I was hoping it would have turned softer after some usage, but 1 month after, the power button is has hard to press as the first day.
Is that normal?
I' like to avoid RMA the tablet: it is perfect ( no light bleeds...)

I just found this app https://market.android.com/details?id=cz.destil.fixbrokenpb to replace power button with volume for switch on... It will limit power button usage to the strict minimum (unfortunately I cannot totally switch off or reboot with it).
It will allow waiting before rma the device, hoping asus assistance getting more expertise in operating on such devices

If it feels like it's alot of trouble then it's probably broken. - If you're within a retailers return policy then act on it ASAP.
Otherwise, do a RMA because that's not normal and app should not be required to simply ignore the matter. Cross your fingers you get a newer hardware version during the RMA process
I think you already know the answer but want someone reconfirm what you should do so I'm suggesting that you do an RMA because you shouldn't settle for less.

When I modded my tablet I noticed the button can *easily* get mis-aligned. It is a simple plastic cap with trim edge. If you push it at an angle (e.g. sideways) it can slip a little sideways resulting in this problem. It also has a slot in the center (behind button) to align, if yours has been bad since day 1 it might have slipped out of the slot, too.
When I re-assembled my tablet I put the side with buttons together first after carefully realigning and my buttons worked great.
I think this can be a common issue. If I was you, I would try using a pencil eraser to grip the button and slide back into position. It can be easily fixed by someone with skills & tools to disassemble and reassemble the tablet.

My power button has a strange behavior: whem i push it, i clearly hear the click (not as loud as the volume one, but button here is smaller and finger is all over the button), but nothing happens.
Tablet is covered by warranty, so i'll avoid opening it: let me try the chance with Amazon, then the standard procedure with Asus.
It's just a pity: no light bleeds, no speaker problem, mic working, display perfect, just fixed the flash perfs...
I do hope rma will not break anything.

Yes, I also had the power button stop working. And, to make matters even better, I got into CWM (or CMW or whatever) to tried to put stock OS back on and got STUCK there. No power buttton, no ability in CWM to go to Backup menu to reflash stock, and no ability to reboot from the main menu!
The power button is cheap, cheap, cheap; you may have trouble getting it fixed if you've rooted (because rooting kills the warranty) and can't reflash stock.
Very disappointed with ASUS on this issue.

Q: any ROMs capable of changing button commands?

So my phones power button recently stopped working (think its a spring or something but it fell into the phone and depressing it does nothing) and I was hoping that someone may know of any ROMs that may allow you to reset buttons so that say the volume down button allows me to wake the phone. Currently I can only wake the phone by receiving calls, plugging it in/unplugging or removing and replacing the battery. I am hoping that I will not have to take it to a repair shop or perform the repair it myself. Any help would be much appreciated.

The collective's Redemption can do this through the rom control feature. Their are probably other roms that can as well but I haven't used them.

i727 skyrocket stuck in continous reboot loop and doesnt get past start screen

I I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket i727 (with stock firmware and ROM), i dont have a SD card and not too many apps installed either, maybe 10-15 apps at most. Today while the phone was in my pocket it just went into this continous reboot cycle, it reboots, gets to the AT&T splash screen and then reboots again and then this goes on forever.
I googled the hell out of this issue but cant seem to find a solid solution and hence hoping u guys can help.
I cannot get into recovery mode cause it never gets past the splash screen
I cannot seems to perform a hard reset (power button + volume key) , it just reboots again.
I tried plugging the phone and connecting via USB but it doesnt help either, it reboots before the computer can detect the phone.
Hope u guys can help ? life without android is no fun...

anyway to fix it or m i close to a paperweight by now. I do not have warranty on this phone
I explored the stuck power buton option and lightly banged the phoen around in hopes that it would let loose but no luck.

I had this same issue with my LG Phoenix, I tried the needle around the power button, and that popped it back to normal. Apparently I held the button down to a side and it got stuck even though the actual button part was in it's "normal," position.
However it did reboot several more times after I got it unstuck. I did remove the back & battery, & unplugged it. Let it sit for a few minutes, after that I put the USB cable back in, then pressed the power button, put the battery back in and pressed the button again, and it went through the normal reboot process.

Just wanted to give you guys an update that i started cleaning the part around the edges as some folks suggested and that failed. then tried smacking around and blowing air into and that failed. Then took the entire phone apart and cleaned it several times using different techniques and sad to say that it all failed and i m SOL.
Bummer but it is what it is and i was quiet happy with that phone.

I'm sorry that none of these options worked out for you.

Its very easy to open I changed a motherboard for a hard bricked i727 very easy to change power button or unstuck it

Where does one find a power button for the skyrocket (the one attached to the motherboard)? The closest thing I could find was this:

It is a repair service though and I live in Canada, I would prefer if I could just order that part. I have been to few repair shops that cant do anything because this power button is hard to find. I opened up the motherboard and the power button clicks fine, so I think it probably has to be replaced.

I had the same issue, came here and read all the things about the stuck power button and needing to replace whatever is beneath it. My friend works in aerospace and had told me about one of the things they need to worry about is temperature causing wire shrinkage due to temperature. For whatever reason, I decided to use that logic and throw my phone in the freezer wrapped in a dry rag. 30min later and the phone finally worked after 8 hours of the boot loop/no boot. That was around November and I haven't had an issue with it since (until today, but it is a different issue).

can any one else confirm this? my phone keeps shutting off. when the screen is black, itll vibrate every second. im assuming its another stuck power button.

I have just fixed mine!!!!
There is a little battery on the circuit board when you take apart the phone. It looks like a small watch battery. Top side is and bottom side are opposite polarities.
I had the exact same symptom. Sometimes just pressing the power button momentarily would bring up the power down menu, then I knew to press it a bunch of times because it was stick. If I didn't eventually it would turn off and vibrate constantly. It kept getting worse.
I measured with an ohm meter and the button itself seems fine so I figured maybe the digital logic relating to the button itself is faulty. So I shorted the little battery on the board (do this only for a brief period, no more than 1s) and put it back together.
Its behaving perfectly normally. I was also getting weird artifacts during video playback before, kind of like what failing solder would do on a bga gpu. It fixed that too.
So I think its similar to that problem some laptops have, where it wont turn on until you remove the battery, hold the power button down a couple times, and then plug it in. It seems a complete circuit discharge fixed this problem at least for me.

In that picture its the silver shiny metal circle. To short it you connect the bottom soldered part to the metal plate on top of the battery. This comlpetely drains all circuits.
So I think a lot of these problems are caused by a phantom charge. In any sense, Im very very happy
Also this could explain why the fridge method worked. Cooling the battery can significantly drop its charge, however I would advise against the cooling method if possible.

You'd need to find a friend or local electronics repair shop, but I ordered some here:

The buttons are $0.99 USD if you buy 2 or more ($1.05 CAD), but 5-7 day business shipping is like $16.99. Still cheaper than a replacement phone, and it's an easy fix for an electronics person or electronics/tv/computer repair shop... At the rate these power buttons have had reported failures, and for the price, I'd get a couple of them in case the replacement fails in the future...
If my wife keeps squeezing the power button on her phone when some crappy app she has wigs out, I'll be needing my second button sooner rather than later...

why when one person says it something everyone band wagons on that idea. i actually had the same issue my skyrocket couldn't go pass the "samsung" screen. all i did was flash a new rom or i just restored an old backup

Then it was user error or a bad flash. And that's software, not hardware.
Skyrocket power buttons are known to fail. I believe Samsung has even acknowledged this.
When your phone randomly goes into a 1-second vibration cycle, sometimes showing the reboot menu beforehand without pressing the button, more than likely it's the power button that has either failed or is sticking.
With my wife's phone, the button was not sticking, and usually lightly tapping the phone at the right angle on your lap or the counter would break the vibration cycle and let it boot up, until the next random power button press and vib cycle would happen.
Button replaced, same exact ROM, and problem gone. :thumbup:

I have a repair shop and i fix these issues with no problem. the only issue im located in Puerto Rico. when the power button gets stuck is because of heavy use, a fall or something that makes a lot of pressure to it and the copper contacts inside the button stay making contact. this is know to happen to i727-i717-i997-i897 and some other galaxy s1 s2 models.

[Q] One S power button issues

Hi all I was wondering whether any other people on here have been suffering with a temperamental power button with their HTC ONE S?
Below are my symptoms whether the rear top cover is on or off. HTC also sent me a replacement cover but I still have the same symptoms so think it could be hardware related.
Press power button from sleep mode and:
Wakes sometimes*
Doesn't wake sometimes*
Sometimes screen ghosts quickly and sleeps again
Wakes and then sleeps
Press from awake and:
Sometimes stays awake*
Sometimes sleeps
Sometimes sleeps and wakes again
Holding power button does nothing with the cover on or off. It will either sleep straight away or sleep then wake. It will not give me power options or screen shot function.*
I have heard of Nexus power button issues but anyone with a One S experienced anything similar?

If you still have warranty replace it while you can

HTC have offered to repair it, I've only had the phone for 4 or so months although I'm 14 months into my contract. I originally had a SE xperia arc s but it had to be sent away for repair, they gave it back still having problems so replaced it. This also had problems so phones4u offered to repair this one but I refused and eventually got them to agree to replace the phone with an HTC one s. Now I'm having problems with this and they are bound to tell me they will only repair it.

Anyways, I have the same symptoms on my phone. I have found several threads with the same problem, but here's just a bit of information I couldn't find elsewhere.
In short: I believe the power button goes deeper in its notch behind the SIM tray than it is supposed to go and the contact to motherboard becomes misaligned. i.e. the switch itself that is right next to motherboard, this has nothing to do with the back cover.
I conclude this, because I noticed that my power button doesn't protrude as much as it used to - and then it stopped working altogether. I was on a plane when this happened, so I was forced to do this little experiment:
I removed the back cover and lifted the power button just a little bit (maybe 0.5 - 1mm or so) - and it started working again! But only for a while, as in regular use the power button goes deeper again over time and loses contact. The button moves very easily in my case, so don't use force - maybe your power button issue is caused by something else, and the glue (if there ever was some) is still intact. Lifting it it might come loose even if it wasnt - or worse, you might break the power button mechanism!
If you can lift the power button (mechanism behind back cover) and it helps, you have the same issue as I do. Please do tell here, maybe this is a common defect. Of course, if your phone is under warranty though, maybe its wiser to take it back to the store before fiddling with the switch .
Or, maybe it's supposed to reside as deep in it's notch as it goes, but there's some oxidation happening in the contacts / MB; lifting it causes the contact to be in position where there's less oxidation. But as my phone is < 6months, I believe there shouldn't be that much oxidation yet (maybe after five years or so it could be expected) - I've never moisted the phone or anything like that. Also since my memory tells me my power button used to protrude more when it was new, I believe some glue (or plastic) has failed.

Actually, now that I've found this:
@3:19- It seems in the video that the power button is soldered to the motherboard. Mine is definitely loose, but does work (if not all the way in). So you might NOT want to pull the switch module after all.

The new back cover made no difference to my issues with the power button. I spoke to phones4u who were reluctant to change the phone but after a short conversation telling them how many faulty phones I've had on this contract they soon agreed to swap the phone with a new one.
As you'd expect new one works fine. I believe it was definitely a faulty power switch on the phone.

[SOLVED] Is there an app to map a broken power button to another button that does NOT drain battery heavily?

I have an ooold phone, a rooted Xperia E (C1504) from 2013. This is important, because I am limited to using Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean.
Long story short, the power on button is broken. I pulled it out with pliers because it was malfunctioning to the point of making the phone unusable. I actually use a clip folded so that it touches both ends where the button was soldered and it actually works perfectly fine as a substitute "button". Thing is, it's super inconvenient. I don't wanna take off the lid then put the clip just so the screen turns on so I can change the song playing.
Anyways, is there an app that allows me to turn on/off the screen or map my power button that does NOT heavily drain my battery?
I have tried several suggestions but they either don't do what I want/do it poorly, or are not compatible with jelly bean.
Or better yet, does anyone know of any app that turns ON the screen when connecting 3.5mm earbuds? This is an already included function in many phones so I imagine there should be an app or xposed module that can do that withouth relying on a wakelock running 24/7 draining battery.
Basically I want something that does what "Volume Power" does, the problem with this god tier app is that it drained half my battery on 5 hours of stand-by. It's a shame because it's exactly what I want.
Anyone has any ideas? Thank you
PS. as a side note, if you want to answer, I figured I'd rather ask here than making a thread for something like this.
I have an xperia arc s with a broken screen. If I lift it up of the case in a manner that the flex cables are tense, it works ok with many ghost touches. As soon as I remove what was under it holding it high above the phone case so that it sits normally, the image fades away. Backlight still works, but the image goes away. Only until I pull it up and tense the flex cable is that the image returns. I know the screen is shot, but still, I'm curious, any ideas what happened with it? lol
EDIT. PS.2. Well the problem with the screen I mentioned is that the flex cable was more sensitive than I was accustomed and I damaged, that's about it.

I did find something, and while it may not be a solution for everyone, it was almost exactly what I wanted. First I rooted, then I used Xposed Installer and used Xposed Additions so to be able to map the physical camera button and add "Screen Off" and "Screen On" conditions to it.
The only problem with it is that with a long press instead of showing the power menu (power off, restart) it just opens the camera, as it's supposed to.
I guess you could solve that but it doesn't matter in my case, since the power button switch is soldered directly into my phone's motherboard rather than being a flex cable addition or something, so I just removed the button with pliers and use a sanded paper clip to make a connection between the 2 points where the button was soldered, that way I bring up the power menu and also turn on the phone.
Again, this worked for me because of the way the power button was put on my motherboard and I did this only because the button was completely shot and unusable, like a ruptured appendix. It was turning off and on my phone, also preventing it from turning on and all of this completely at random. If your power button is a flex cable accessory that connects to the main board or is not completely shot like mine, don't do this because it will help nothing, hey, in your case it's probably better because you just replace the power button + volume buttons flex cable for another and you're good to go. You can get it from ebay or buy a 2nd hand phone that is not working (which should be cheap) and use the spares for your own.
