[A51x] Key shortcuts (recovery, bootloader, factory reset) - Acer Iconia A700 and A510

Don't recall seeing this yet on the forum, but here's a list of "keyboard shortcuts" to boot your device into bootloader, factory reset it or boot the recovery.
Recovery:
WARNING: if you have stock recovery and an update.zip in your external sd it will start to flash immediately
Volume- (two dots) and Poweron
Bootloader:
WARNING: this is very similar to factory reset, which will start immediately
Volume- (two dots) and Poweron and then toggle the rotation switch on and off a few times
JB BootLoader:
Boot with Volume- and PowerOn, First vibration => Release PowerOn, Second vibration => Release Vol- and press Vol+
Factory Reset:
WARNING: reset will start immediately
Volume+ (one dot) and Poweron and then toggle the rotation switch on and off a few times
APX Mode (for NVFlash):
WARNING: use APX mode only when you know what you are doing!
Hold Volume- (one dot) and Volume+ (one dot) and press reset button & release volume keys
Screen will stay black and power led will not light up. The only way to check APX mode is enabled is to plug the tablet to the PC and see if the APX device is there.

Nika.

oh silly me, I keep mixing them up. Modified them now... glad I added the warnings :silly:

Indeed, they are still wrong
vol-/power = recovery
vol-/power/rotation lock toggle = fastboot
vol+/power/toggle rotation = hard reset (that one was right )

Yeah, just figured that out myself. Sorry. Changed it now

You can add the APX mode :
hold vol+ & vol-
press [reset] once
release volume keys
Screen will stay black and power led will not lit. The only way to check APX mode is enabled is to plug the tablet to the PC and see if the APX device is there.

Good one. Added it. Alternatively you can also restore an invalid boot image, and brick your device, or something like that to get into apx automatically

That would be too easy. I have done this in a more
interesting way after corrupting /data by the CM5 wipe and trying to repartition internal mem :

Pls, excuse me for any inconvenience, I'm not much of a poster here, so the forum didn't allow me to post an external link and the attachment got automatically resized. Going to take super-regulatory measures and override the rules
I soft-bricked the phone with the CWM Recovery 5.0 Wipe, as I mentioned before, after only 3 months of using a rooted device, while trying to get a custom ROM installed to get usb camera driver working, found out that the /data partition has been corrupted by the old CWM ver, read the partition table size somewhere on the net for A510 and tried to repartition the SD to 12GB as it should be, but noticed the 32GB SD/MMC size mark in the output of the parted tool right after I entered the 12800 as the size. Was a little bit shocked, tried to apply some other's tablet partition sizes in the end, and this eventually bricked the device to black screen
And yeah, I did pay for the 16GB ver, the receipt said it's 16GB, the box has 32GB print label, the device has been partitioned as 16GB, I took it apart and read the memory label it was 32GB, if I am not mistaken, I assembled it with no issues and then I was able to partition it AS 32GB, as you can see on the screenshot. All I wanted was my device back to life, but out of curiosity couldn't stand trying to get extra 16GB for free. Curiosity killed the cat
The device now can get into both: APX with both volume down and reset AND into a 1-2 sec boot up with no vibe or screen light up after a short single power button press which is enough to get detected by a PC and power off immediately!
All my attempts to bring it back to life have failed, there is simply no custom software for it yet! NVFLASH was not able to do anything with it either. Acer support told me they do not have any access to give me a temporary login and password for the Acer Download Tool which would save the world for that day, and the device has my corp data within, so I can't handle it to any repair shop and it's just resting on the shelf as a bunch of antiques
Acer, I think this is a bit unfair, so I am putting an EXTRA effort into this...
hxxp://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2507/deadbeef.png
Thanks in advance to whomever will look into the issues with internal memory and perhaps bring a second life to my and such other devices on the planet!

I have to take off my hat in front of the Acer support.
After visiting an office of my local authorized repair center and explaining to them that I cracked the screen in halves, then plugged in a keyboard and killed my tablet with CWM wipe and later manually killed stock file table which finally put the device into a hard-brick state, lost my warranty because I disassembled it and, as a matter of fact, will not be willing to pay the price of a new and a better tablet for the replacement of the screen and the motherboard if they are not be able to recover the software part, I crossed my fingers and took a break.
I gave them a call two weeks after and got and answer that they were awaiting for a spare part, couldn't tell me right away which one. Taken into account that they have already had the screen by the time of my visit, I started worrying if they got me right and sent them an email to make sure if they were waiting for the screen instead of the motherboard and everything is fine with the software part.
Here's their reply:
"The screen has been replaced.
Motherboard has been ordered on warranty, since it is not Your fault.
You will be paying only for the screen replacement, i.e. $200.
As a minus, you will have to wait until we receive the motherboard.
Are you comfortable with this?"
OMG, they have a heart of gold... :good:

I think they are laughing at me right now - they've put 32Gb motherboard into my 16Gb tablet :good:

Hi.
I just got an A510 with a broken USB port. It didn't charge and the owner even sold the charger. I opened it, connected 2 wires at the battery so I charge it now. My only problem is, that I would like to use Android 4.3/4.4 and I don't know how to do it without an USB port. I tried Framaroot, but no luck.
You mention in the first post, that when one boots into recovery and there's an update.zip on the sdcard, then it installs it. Is it possible to root it this way?
Thanks in advance!

Download mode not working anymore!!! PLEASE help

Hello
I downloaded the [ROM-ODIN]T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root
but it will not re-install all the Bloatware on my phone
I want to try the [ROM-ODIN] Deodexed KB5 Enhanced v1.5 rom now
However, I just can't enter Download Mode anymore
If I press Volume Up + Volume Down + HOME + Power button, I can enter the recovery mode or whatever it's called
If I press Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button the phone boots normally
I do remember accessing Download Mode before, when I install the Stock + Root ROM
At this point I'm so frustrated I am just going to return the phone to the store and cancel the whole T-Mobile contract
Samsung Galaxy S 4G was supposedly the BEST OF THE BEST but with 200MB out of stock I just can't use this phone too much, since a few apps use 20MB per app (Google Earth, Adobe Air...)
Anyway, I want to reinstall all the Bloatware, so I'd appreciate if someone can tell me how to restore this phone to factory settings, with all the bloatware and all that crap
I appreciate your responses

Shut down your phone. pull the battery out. connect your tether cable to the phone and USB to computer. start oden, put tar file in PDA box. don't change any other settings. Put your phone in download mode by pressing both up/down volume buttons (not Power) and insert the battery. once in download mode, click on Start on oden. As for the bloatware, you are going to get whatever apps that are in the tar file. I think Some of the bloat has been removed. Not sure what, but it seems most of it is still there. I think DriveSmart is gone

THANK YOU BROTHER
I was 20 minutes away from going to T-Mobile
Ok, so why is this procedure different from other procedures?
To recap
1) Shut down your phone
2) Start ODIN and select TAR file
3) Press Volume Up/Volume UP simultaneously
4) Insert battery
5) Click Start in Odin
Now my question, in Step 3, after I press Volume Up/Volume Down, and I insert the battery, should I press the power button or not?
I appreciate your help, however, I have a new problem now

This thing is not progressing at all
I remember the first time I did that I saw some progress both in the phone and in the program
Now I see SOME progress in the program, but that progress stopped a WHILE ago
Now the phone tells me
Downloading...
Do not turn off Target!!!
Now what should I do?
I would REALLY appreciate if you can continue helping me please since you seem to have experience with this
The Three fingered salute Vol up/down/power is a master reset to get back to original image file. When you mess-up the image you have to recover some other way. So far with the SGS4G the only way that is working until CWM is fixed is the oden process. It appears that oden is kind of a quirky program. Sometimes it locks up and you have to try again. So you need to have to give it time to work and if it fails you have to try again. Master reset uses files that are on the memory on the phone. Oden uses files on an external source an pushes them to the phone. To enable the push the phone has to be in download mode to receive the files. There is a device you can purchase to plug into the phone that will put the phone into download mode. It cost about $10. Its kinda handy if you are doing this alot, but removing the battery pushing both volume buttons and inserting the battery gets you there. You can also remove and reinsert the battery then plug in the tethering cable while pushing the buttons also as Krylon360 has pointed out.
Yeah if I don't see a progress bar in the phone, I'll just reboot
I finally have flashed the Samsung Galaxy S 4G to two ROMS
1) T959VKB5-Custom
2) KB5Deodexv15
I hope at least one of those can return the Bloatware
I want to recover the bloatware because it was located in the folder
/system/
So it doesn't occupies space in the folder /data/
1) T959VKB5-Custom is a better ROM since it restored Drive Smart and Think Office
The other ROM has nothing
I'm glad I finally discovered how to insert ROMs into my Samsung Galaxy S 4G

Glad to hear you got it working. You may be able to find some of the apps you are looking for that are missing. Look around XDA I've seen some posts of others asking for some of the missing apps. There are some programs like Android Commander that can install APKs from your computer if you can download them there. You might be able to find some of those apps on the market possibly.

Yeah...echoing Beef's question - you know you're in the 4g forum right? You shouldn't be flashing 2.3.3 on a SGS4g. If you're having issues flashing a vibrant (not the 4g), try posting in their forums.

Hi, when i tried rooting gb 2.3.3 with dsexton702's method i have the download mode problem. I tried all the methods possible here (except 4th in my case) but it did not work. It's 3.00 am here and I'm in panic my only way is to get that device because i'm in Turkey and no T-mobile here.
So, please tell me more about the thing you mentioned may be i can find it in here.

I think it may be because you have gb. Something to do with the boot loaders. There are a few other threads about download mode in gingerbread on the development section.

If you are having issues getting into DL mode after trying to go to GB, this method will likely not help you. This will get you to the recovery menu (blue) or CWM (Red or Orange) depending what you have installed on your phone. To get into recovery press the vol UP/DN/Power then release the buttons just before it cycles off again. I let it cycle once or twice so I can time when to release the buttons. I just count to about 4 or 5 then release the buttons. If you tried to install GB you will have to get into DL mode and flash the phone using Oden again using another ROM such as the KD1 ROM.
EDIT. To get into DL mode I use the method #3. Shut down phone. Pull battery out. Get oden setup on your computer by putting a Rom into the PDA box (Such as PDA_KD1.tar.md5). Put battery back in the phone. Hold the vol/up/dn buttons only. Then plug in your USB cable into your phone. That should put you in DL mode. Oden will detect your phone and light up yellow in the top first box and indicate which COM port you are on. If you can get that far press START and flash away. What you will likely have to do is flash the KC1 ROM with the Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit. That should bring your system back so you can flash other ROMs. Check This Post for directions on using this method. This is one way people have been recovering from GB problems. The top part explains how to get KC1 ROM installed. You can flash the KD1 ROM after that if you want, Just don’t use the Pit file or check repartition when going to KD1.
Thanx for your all help here guys! The next day i woke up early and my sister was about to leave home to do some walking, i told the situation to her and when i get back from toilet my phone was in download mode!! she thinks she pressed only vol down button and plugged the usb then the battery. I think the gingerbread download mode button combination can be different than the froyo. I wont try to get into download mode for a while not to have more adrenaline but as soon as i test and confirm i will post it here.

[Q] Bricked Transformer

I had a working Transformer until earlier today when the OTA update came along. Having accepted installation, my device now gets to the Eee Pad / ASUS logo and hangs there (waited for about 45 minutes after the update). Trying to reboot into recovery gives:
Android WW_epad-user bootloader < e> released by "WW_epad-8.2.3.6-20110414".
Checking for android ota recovery
Booting recovery kernel image
It does not give me the Up to recovery, Down to wipe option.
Any thoughts on how I might recover the device?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Ohh **** that dont sound good
Sorry i cant help with any advice on fixing it, apart from trying a factory reset ?
Did you apply the update with under 50% of the battery available ?
No, full. And connected to the mains.
I cant get any option to do a full wipe, it never asks me.

There are some things you can try in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032374
Here a few key combinations for anyone interested:
VOL_DOWN + POWER (continue holding VOL_DOWN when it starts booting until you get a prompt) = Bootloader which offers two prompted options: (1) Recovery if you press VOL_UP within 5 seconds or (2) Data wipe if you press VOL_UP later. None of these seem to offer any USB devices like fastboot etc.
VOL_UP + POWER or VOL_DOWN + VOL_UP + PLUG IN USB = NVFlash mode. It clearly is the NVFlash APX device that we see appearing, but it barfs as soon as we run any sort of nvflash on it (Many Windows and Linux versions have been tried). Please note that in this mode the screen stays completely blank and the only way to get out of it is the following option:
Hold POWER for ~10s = Forced power off. This always helps if you are stuck in some weird mode and nothing on the screen
Dont know if any of these key presses will work on yours, worth a try to get it to recover ?
Yeah I had seen that thread. Unfortunately no joy from either option. I dont get the prompt when I do VOL DOWN+POWER, just seems to go straight into recovery. And as the post says, NVflash doesn't help at the moment.
Can't even seem to get the ADB USB devices to show up, I can only get the APX device which seems to be fairly useless ATM. Looks like I may have to RMA the thing.
What is that small hole next to HDMI port? Did you try that, it may just be button (use paper pin) to reset it to factory default?
Or maybe microphone ? lol i personnaly don't think those tablets would actually have a reset button, would check the manual first before sticking a paper pin into every holes...
My Transformer just came in, I accepted the OTA update and while installing it saw this thread and had a dreadful feeling. Thankfully, it rebooted fine and is working... sounds like something's wrong with yours unfortunately OP .
If you haven't tried the 10 second power button method as mentioned in an earlier post it's definitely worth a try.
stuntdouble:
I thought the 10 sec power button thing just turned the device off. Is there something else I can do that I am missing?
I think it clears cache and/or ram too. I'm not saying it will definitely fix your problem, it may not, but if it was me I'd try everything. It won't damage anything so don't worry.
Have you tried getting into the Clockwork mod recovery? You need to place it on an external microsd and when you do the holding down when switching on thing, it goes into the recovery on the card instead of the stock one. It might allow you to flash a rom to get it running again.
You can find the Clockwork recovery with instructions here
http://android.modaco.com/content/a...od-recovery-for-the-asus-eee-pad-transformer/
Good idea, unfortunately it didnt work. It doesnt appear to be allowing me to get to the point where it will read EP101_SDUPDATE.zip from the SD.
You sure filename is EP101? Shouldnt it be TF?
All the instructions call for EP101, but I tried TF too just in case!

It's a microphone. If you go poking a paperclip in there, good luck claiming under warranty.
Same thing just happened to me... reboot for update, stuck at boot screen.
Not sure if we can find a EP101_SDUPDATE.zip for higher than 20110414 if that'd be a fix or what... or even a PC restore process.

download a 2.3.6 firmware and odin kies and I have installed on the PC, the thing is that I can go from there, if anyone can tell me if I am going wrong in download mode ... or is that really the phone that became a brick and not worth doing anything ... well I hope your comments
This is the model of the phone for what it's worth.

Seems like stuck power button
Okay if it's not stuck power button , Below trick may solve ur problem
1 Go to full stock using heimdal one click, After completetion, U may stuck in bootloop as you said
2 Flash efs.zip found in the link below using odin. put efs.zip in odin and untouch any other setting and flash, (Ur imei may be previously corrupted so u got bootloop). This doesnot do any harm. So flash with confidence. If ur device doesnot show up in odin after u flash with heimdal one click , reinstal drivers with kies mini
Link for download http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1729838
3 Now u'll be out of bootloop if ur imei was previously corrupted.
Do as I said stepwise
I was in similar situation. And this solved my problem.
Hit me thanks if I helped you :good:

Take out the battery for 1 minute and put the battery inside , if again it automatically starts then may be ur power button is stuck;
U need to disassembly according to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewdyo2fkJj8 video
and press the power button from inside after u open the nod
And if ur power button is not stuck ie after u open ur battery and put after 1 min and if doesnot starts automatically,
do the step I mentioned above
For efs download below.
If the process doesnot work let me know
I have next option for you. But do the step i mentioned above step by step.

excellent! and if the power button is stuck and let him yesterday when I left work without the battery and when you return in the morning and went back to get quickly rekindled, when you get home you have to hand screwdrivers do, many thank you! then comment as I was :good:
Two things can be wrong here. Power button or bad USB port. I replaced my power button that fixed only part of the problem. Can be imei problem. I'd put it into download mode flash back to stock. If problem persist you can rule out software n proceed to hardware. A way to test the power button is if you were able to boot into recovery.
One way to get it to boot up IF IF IF its not a power button problem
Slide out battery..... Slide battery back in ... right after you put the battery in plug in your USB charging cable(you have to do it pretty quick).... You should get a green recharging battery logo.... While this logo is up continuously press the power button...
Sometimes its just a bad/faulty or dirty USB port. Its a bit difficult to solder a new button thats that's why its best to make sure its the button. I'm talking from experience. you can clean the button.. I read some thread where people would just drop the phone purposely to get the button unstuck.
If not don't worry power button are pretty cheap on eBay as well as ports.

well ... Yesterday I opened the phone according to the video tutorial that I spend @amritn as seen in the image.
but when I do what you tell me to put the battery and place the USB cable quickly becomes thus passes this black screen, and press the power button nothing happens.
So if I saw this other tutorial yesterday and when I opened the phone yesterday I did the last step, I opened it and review only the shell of the phone does not have the button stuck and do not touch the equipment itself, not if I have to prove with doing what it says here in whole or proceed to restore the imei .... I say?
sorry for my bad English that comes thanks to google translator
reviewing found this video out there that is exactly what happens to the phone I have, just that I have that piece that put the end of the video that makes it ends in download mode
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdSusfiSjqI
then ... that means the problem is if the power button?

If that exactly the same things happen in video, Then i'm afraid to say it's power button failure.
Or if u can go normally to download mode using volume up+ volume down and inserting usb cable when the phone is power of
go to my second process from heimdal one click and restoring efs. This may solve your problem if it's software related.

[Q][UNBRICK] Is my TF700 a brick OR asleep in APX MODE?

Hello everyone,
This is my first post here so forgive my errors (if any):
I have tried a few things on my TF700:
1. I have installed the rooting tool from asus website and after activating it,
The first boot scrren said (on top left corner) "the device is unlocked"
When running the app again it would give an error.
2. I tried soft reset - nothing there.
3. I went for hard reset - I accidently went for the left most icon....
After a little investigation on a few pages here I think it is in APX mode..???
It turns on but stays in the first screen with the white ASUS logo on screen & thats it...
Any ideas anyone???
How do I save my precious TF700??
I tried connecting to it through USB installing (Linux):
cat > /etc/udev/rules.d/60-nvflash.rules <<END
# nvflash support for Nvidia Tegra systems attached to USB
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0955", ATTR{idProduct}=="7820", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"

If you use the Asus unlock tool, you should not brick your device. It looks like that you wipe your system some how. I am guessing here... Can you do some test for me? If you on the Asus screen, just press the power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down and then keep holding the power button with the volume down at the same time until you are going back to the three icons, thanks. I just want to see if you can get back to your recovery...

Than you for you reply...
I already tried that...it just loops the same shut down to ASUS LOGO screen with no response to the volume down button.
I also let it run out of power so to try & get it out of this loop which resembles an APX loop but in vain...it just keeps on powering up to the same state...
Will give it another go....
There isn't even a pause where I can slip the volume down button in, that is why I let it run out of power to slip the volume down button in...& that is what I am going to do now...let it charge for a short while and power it up with the volume down button (which did not work for several tries...)

What is that right most logo on the hard reset screen?

The device will enter in APX mode only with the Volume UP + Power buttons combo and to get out of that mode you need to hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
If you can't get to the bootloader menu (the one with the 3 icons) anymore you are out of luck and only Asus can repair your device. APX it's useful only if you have the NvFlash backup.
Inserting a microSD with an original Asus firmware is also useless if you can't access the bootloader menu because you can't boot in recovery mode.

Make sure you do EXACTLY what sdbags said - he IS the expert.
With the tablet powered OFF, press and hold BOTH the power button and volume down button together, for at least 10 seconds. It should bring you back to the screen with the 3 icons. RCK, android robot icon, wipe. RCK gets you to recovery mode where you can use TWRP for recovery/flash installs, etc. Middle android is the cold boot option which sometimes fixes problems like you're having. Don't do wipe unless someone like sdbags explicitly tells you.
Hope you can fix this.

Well guys...thank you all for your help & time...
I tried everything anyone here suggested but unfortunately ended up with the same result: ASUS white logo screen.
The tablet is still under the first year time period...any suggestions as for how to get it fixed (RMA) without paying tones of money?
What should I say happened???
Guess RCK does not work on my device...(?)
Thank you all...
Did you try the middle android icon to see if that helped? You switch to the middle one by pressing volume down, then select it by pressing volume up.
The device also have a reset button (a tiny hole near the micro hdmi port),use a paperclip to press it and hope for the best.
As for the RMA ,Asus could charge you for repairing because you unlocked the bootloader but some users here on XDA also reported that Asus repaired their device for free even if the bootloader was unlocked.

I'm a little confused, but if I can't get access to fastboot, is it all?

Galax S7 does not turn on – Nothing works

Hi,
today in the morning I couldn’t turn on my S7. It went off while charging overnight. Then I tried to hold the volume down and the power button together for twelve seconds and the S7 turned on. Unfortunately it just boots to the Samsung logo and nothing happens since then.
I wrote to the Samsung support and they told me to send it in. And they also said that I will lose my warranty if I make a hard reset. Is that true? Because the other thing is, that I really need some very important data from just one app. I already did a hard reset in the past and the data from this app didn’t get lost. I don’t know why (no cloud synchronization) but it worked. My plan was to try a hard reset but my phone is fully charged and I cannot turn it off to get into Recovery mode.
So basically I have three questions:
1. Will I lose my warranty if I do a hard reset?
2. Is there any possibility turn off my phone or to unload my battery? (And after that to try a hard reset.)
3. Does anyone have any idea how to save some date by any other way?
Thank you very much for any help!
Samsung are full of sh** if they told you you would lose warranty by performing a full reset, nothing of the sort
Warranty is checked by KNOX 0x0 = valid (Or 0x1 if it is tripped) which is only tripped by flashing something custom / rooting
Try booting into recovery and clearing only the caches, see if you can get back in that way
Otherwise, flashing the same stock ROM over the top with ODIN may work
Thank you for your answer.
Any idea how to boot into recovery mode? The problem is that in the moment I cannot turn off my phone and it's fully charged. I guess it would last some days to wait until the battery is empty. And unfortunately you can't remove the ****ing battery.

Volume up & Home & Power
Keep those buttons held in until the phone reboots, continue holding them and it should reboot a 2nd time, this time hopefully entering recovery
You can try the same for download mode, which is the same combo, only volume down instead of up

First i pressed the volume down button and then nothing happened and it booted again until the Samsung logo. In my second try I pressed the volume up button and now I am here (see attached pics).

Now only the combo with the vol down key works. If I press vol up + home + power nothing happens. I don't get this ****.

OK, it's possible that recovery got corrupted then
Right, so grab a stock ROM from here
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=G930F
Extract and Load the .MD5 into ODIN AP section
Put the phone into download mode and hit start
It should reboot hopefully into a working OS
if not, try entering recovery again
ODIN

No, as I said earlier, warranty is only affected if you flash something custom
Stock Samsung ROMs are not custom
For a very short time my phone startet adnroid, but everyhing was black und I just saw the notifications bar. I couldn't do anything. After that my phone did a reboot and now I am again at the Samsung logo. The combi with vol up still doesn't work.

You managed to download and flash a stock ROM in that short time?
Might need to flash the entire set of files from the ROM download in ODIN, which I think might reset the phone with one of them (HOME I think)
EDIT - Another option would be firmware recovery using SmartSwitch
http://www.samsung.com/uk/smart-switch/samsung-desktop-app.html
Good day.
Recently happened to me something similar, while i was playing, the phone rebooted and got stuck at samsung logo.
The phone was rooted, with TWRP and Xposed.
Really don't know what happened. At the time, in panic, i flashed a stock ROM and the phone never booted again. Just a blank screen and a blue led.
I sent my phone to Samsung for warranty and 1 month later (5 days ago), got it back working, even with KNOX 1x0.
In most of Europe, Samsung cannot charge you anything even if the phone was rooted, with the exception if it was root that directly caused the malfunction.
I am having the same problem. the combo with Vol up does not work. Any further help, PLEASE?
