I have decided to start work on a rom named 'Fall back jelly bean'
originally intended for Nexus 7 (when it arrives) but now is in developement for htc devices which still dont have many ics roms.
as i am a new user, xda blocks picture?? weird. Need to make ten posts with thanks, hint hint
At the time of typing, it is based on CM7 RC4 Nightly and some ics roms, which are mostly skins on Lordcloacken (is that spelt right??) kernels.
(if your looking for screen shots, I haven't got that far yet!! come back in a few weeks)
I will most likley be keeping his kernel and merely pasting in parts of jb such as apps, skins settings and much more!!
I hope to have the beta released by the end of august but as a student cannot guarantee that I won't have work so... don't shout at me if it isn't finished
Any suggestions such as wallpapers themes, whether i should use a launcher, a sense jb hack (made by me !?!) or something else are very very welcome.
Plz post ANY suggetsions as they could greatly iprove the chances of this being a successful and frequently updated rom.
P.S this is my first big project, I have compiles small custom roms before and researched, but never taken on modding so much and steeling so much from a newer os
would much appreciate ANY tips which are things maybe not obvious to a noob, but save so much time.
(also don't thin this will be crap cus of that, I'm 30% sure it will be good xD)
Signing out with a sigh of relief- fallon911 :highfive:
Edit: Randomblame made a better jellybean rom and beet me to it, so if u want a dhd jelly bean rom, i recommend jellytime.
Reserved A
I have gathered lots of JB goodies and am compiling them into ice cold sandwich 7.2
The kernel won't change, much I will leave the same. Until official ICS for dhd, it is difficult to change anything to do with the camera, so I left all that stuff the same. I hope to post a custom rom which I will label Icy Jelly Bean
I'm sorry I was unable to make a jb rom for dhd, but I will be releasing a similar os, possibly with google now !!
I plan to include:
GS3 Launcher (+ all other free origionals included)
Google playstore (US only, so I cannot test )
JB boot img for flashing
In the future:
possibly google now?
A jelly bean kernel and the camera app
I've got GCSEs coming up so i can't spend a load of time on this
Reserved B
again, another reserved post

I rooted my phone last night and now I'm seeing just how amazing the ROMs are. My wife looks at me like I'm nuts when I tell her about it so I needed this place to share my excitement.
I'm using the overclocked ICS Multiple Flavors right now and I never want to go back! (To be on the safe side I stashed aside a factory backup and a backup of how I had the phone prior to installing the ROM.)
Now I really don't care if I get the official ICS update. Not after seeing what the developers can cook up.
Cheers!
While your enthusiasm for the dev of our phone is just, and we do have some great roms, I would hardly go as far as saying not to care for official ICS. Mostly because without Official ICS it is unlikely we will ever see 100% stable/functional ICS Roms
SkyICS is nice, but its NOT ICS, it's themed to look like ICS. BIIIIIG Difference.
Note: It's what I'm running and I love it, its great, but I still want ICS .
Ok guys, I am looking for an ICS ROM since I love ICS and to be up to date with Android stuff. So I had a look at which ROMs are there and found these:
(Ordered in last activity of its thread in the development section)
1. |-ROM-|-4.0.4-|-AOKP-B39-|-CM9-|-6/15/12-|-WildchildIcE-v0.9b-|-Nightlies-|
2. [ROM]HTC Doubleshot ICS 4.03(Sensation XE Sense 3.6)app2ext 5-5-2012
3. [ROM][Official]MyTouch4G Slide CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 5 (06/27) - 4.0.4
4. [ROM]CM9 Unofficial KANG [SEMI-NIGHTLY]
5. [ROM][6 March 2012][Alpha]Pyr-O-Ice FUTUREAL 1.0.0 (Sense 4.0,Android 4.0.3,OC1.5Ghz)
6. [ROM][Mar 7 2012] Pyr-o-Ice Sense 1.1.1 (Android 4.0.3 ICS, Sense 3.6, 1.5GHz OC)
7. - ?. Are there others that are not on XDA?
Let's collect basic information at first and see which ones are in development.
I will come back soon. Also I will keep this post (original/ first post) up to date with stuff you guys post here.
And I have a question. I don't understand why there are so many different ROMs. Do developers just like to have their own and see what they can achieve? Or do they have differing interests? Sense will of course be one, I guess it can't be just added on top of a working ICS ROM? Wouldn't it be more fun, rewarding and forward thinking for them to all work together?
Thanks for every feedback.
Most ICS Roms are by one Dev. Tbalden, he just made Roms to do it. All the bugs are outlined in the "Not Working" section. All ROMs based off 2.6 Kernel have simular issues (Wifi Tether, 1080p not working) All Sense 3.6 Roms have the same issues, with minor UI bugs that won't be fixed. Why? Nobodys using them. Most AOSP/CM9/AOKP bugs kernel wise are the same. Then UI wise varys from ROM to ROM. I can tell your new to here, I don't feel this thread should be here Xo All the bugs are outlined. As you can see CM9/AOKP are the most used. On Rootzwiki there's two ICS Roms by Tbalden. Virtuious Inc, and Virtuious Prim. Virt Inc with the 3.0 kernel seems to be the most "stable" out of all ICS Roms as of now.

You do make some excellant points! Bear in mind I'm no coder/deveolper but I'd be happy to give up my take on what I've gathered about the subject since I've been frequenting this site.
The Development threads are a bit more 'formal'....and rightly so. It keeps the discussion from spiraling into something it wasn't originally started for by the OP. But all the other forums & their threads are much more liberal as you'll see.
Now then your questions.....
1. WildChildIcE is THE ICS ROM you're going to want to keep your eye on IMHO. This one is an AOKP ROM which seems to give you the usefullness & freedoms of Sense without the bloat & huge size. From what I've been able to tell it merges most if not alll of the great features of ICS into one ROM where not all do. VERY customizable, many themes available, smooth, quick, OC/UC available, good battery life, etc. A very usable Beta ROM.
2. A Sense ROM I've not tried yet but being 3.6 it should be smoother & quicker than the GB Senses that you may have experienced. At least, they seem that way to me. Although the developer hasn't returned he has labeled it as relatively 'bug-free' but the things not working are sometimes deal breakers for folks. The wide format camcorder CAN be worked around but wifi tethering to my tablet is pretty important to me. There's been no updates & relatively few user comments although it's using Tbalden's 1.5 OC kernal and it's a GOOD one supporting Sense 3.6.
3. CM9 is another I haven't used yet, per se. Except for the fact that XMC's ROM has been temporarily merged with it for stability purposes and to bypass a couple of stubborn bugs. It's my understanding that it will return to pure AOKP by full release which will bring back the feature 'ROM Control'. You've not seen that in GB or Froyo and you will LIKE it! I've been using the latest nightly simply because the phone proximity sensor is working.
4. This being an UNofficial CM9 KANG, it will most likely have the same features and shortcomings the official CM9 does along with a few new features the developer saw as something he and other users might like. (This is basically where all the different flavors of ICS....GB....& Froyo come from). PLUS, when finished, CyanogenMod is a ROM that others most always aspire to be as thoroughly debugged as.
5. This is a ROM by an amazing developer...Tbalden. This ROM was 'orphaned' here when Tbalden joined The Virtuous Team and transformed there (www.virtuousrom.com) into (what I consider) one of the best most stable ICS ROMs out there called Virtuious Inquisition. As a matter of fact when I flashed it to my wife's phone she told me "ALRIGHT....this is the ONE! Now STOP CHANGING MY PHONE"! LOL It is a complete fantastic ICS with a battery life outta this world. TRY it.....you'll LIKE it!
6. ANOTHER fantastic ROM by Tbalden. Need I say more? The only thing I can remember being not being near perfect is the dialer being slightly shifted to the right but still completely usable. Futureal/Virtual Inquisition was the one he was inspired to compose while he was working on this one. Like I said before.....need I say MORE?
7. There are several other you might want to try that are now longer actively linked here. Over at Rootzwiki, check out a developer called Undeadk9. He did some GREAT things for our phone with some creations that lots of folks still use regularly. Myself included.
TRY some of these and I believe you'll be able to answer your general question at the bottom of you post all by yourself. The answer will be evident to you.
Good Luck....and Welcome to XDA!
Thanks guys!
AgentCherryCola: I'm not new to the XDA Forums and I also had some looks around the ROM threads of the MT4GS forum. I know they all have lists for their bugs and I appreciate that very much. However, I still think it is useful to have a thread who sums it up and compares the ROMs and their issues. Thanks for your summary!
WeekendsR2short: Happy to see someone likes my idea I appreciate your reviews very much. And yes I could just try every ROM and I think I will, at least some of them. But probably only for some minutes, because once I have all my data, apps and stuff set up right, which takes quite some time, I don't want to do it all over again. That's one reason I'm asking for experiences of ROMs and their advantages and disatvantages. But yeah maybe I am overcomplicating things... But it's still fun and useful for newcomers
BTW back then on my G1 it was pretty complicated... a lot of ROMs were pretty fast at the beginning and once you installed some apps and used the phone a bit it got really creepily slow... But I suppose I don't have to worry about that with a phone that is about 6 times as fast
There are some early ICS ROMs by undeadk9 over on rootzwiki, but he stopped developing for the Doubleshot. For a few months, he was the ONLY dev working on this phone.

I have been reading these forums for the last few days. I have seen a lot of threads like this but they have not really answered my questions.
I need a stable ROM, where phone, internet, text, gps all work. I am looking for the best battery life. I am also not looking to flash a ton of updates.
I would like to get a jelly bean ROM if one fits my needs. If not then Ice cream. If you guys could recommend a jelly bean and Ice cream rom I would appreciate it.
Thanks again for the help!
PS Kenny if you reading this and you want to make a Jelly Bean Peoples ROM I would love to try it out!

For Jellybean No doubt Paranoid Android
For ICS (TouchWiz) Synergy
I guess everyone agrees with you

It's just tough to give a meaningful answer to this question because it really depends on how you use your phone and your personal tastes. Best thing to do is try out several ROMs and see what works best for you.

For ICS: Cleanrom....it removes all the bullcrap/bloatware and doesn't mess with it too much so things work and work well. Dirtytweaks if you want a little more customization
Synergy is good, however still has some bloat in it that I'm surprised has not been removed...still a very good rom thats geared moreso in my opinion for a heavier tweaker as opposed to just needing a steady not messed with too much rom
Beans is another good one and in my opinion the inbetween of clean and synergy
For JB: paranoid or just go with the default official cm10 nightlies though I can't speak much of personal experience with jb
The CM10 Nightlies(Jelly Bean) are/have become stable enough with yesterday's release. Minor GPS problems as in taking a minute to fix(it does fix, just takes longer than normal sometimes) and some FC's in random situations(Swiftkey install, when you go to change settings through it it FC's the settings. Gotta go in directly to the settings) are about it.
All the functionality bugs seem to have been squished out, no more 3s call delay/echo. So far no data drops reported except from dirty flashes. Text works fine even with a SMS(not MMS) quick reply popup if you want it.
It's pretty nice and stable. I recommend trying it out. (first boot is tricky, let it sit at the activation screen until you see all your radios connect then reboot it and you should be good to go)
Thanks guys I appreciate the advice
Sorry forgot one other question
How is the battery life with ICS vs Jelly Bean?
Thank you
Incubus's jellybean port is 100 percent perfect, literally no issues. And a 5889 quadrant score.

you should spend a week with a CM10 style ROM (i prefer paranoid android as already suggested), and a week with a touchwiz rom.
they are different experiences. you should try them both for sure.
Hey.
I've been on jb roms since they came out for desire s and have been using ics before that. However... ics roms have been in beta stage since ever and have not really advanced in terms of having stable or even working main functions. Well this is because of the fact that our devs did not have kernel sources. There have been words that kernel source release would solve all our major issues like front cam and others. But kernel source has been released and I'm seeing a decline in our forum's traffic and in development. I know i's partly due to many original members leaving. But I also hear that devs are facing difficulty in making the kernel. So I want to ask, will we ever have fully stable ics or jb roms or is this not a possibility?

Sorry for the tone, but this is a pretty pointless thread (IMO) there are already several others in a similar vein that exist and as we don't have a time machine and can't see into the future....although speculation appears to what the majority of threads contains these days....
This is now unfortunately an old device and as you rightly pointed out lots of the forums previous users have moved on to bigger and better new devices so the forum traffic was always bound to fall. We still have several devs that are developing for this device so don't do them a dis-service by suggesting that no progress has been made. Just look at the CM, AKOP and JB source build threads for examples.....
Since the release of the kernel source - progress has certainly been made, just look at the tweaked kernel we can now use, in which we are now able to UV & OC not to mention that the wifi tether issues are now resolved... everything takes time, so be patient....or learn to code yourself and help out!

I fully understand the devs' hard work and their dedications. That's not what this thread is asking. It seems to many devs that they are still having a hard time adjusting ics and jb to our device even upon kernel source release. Despite the prior speculation that things would be much easier with kernel source. So I was bringing the problem forth to see if it is possible for us to have stable ics or jb roms. No need to be all defensive. Just want an objective discussion
Sent from my Desire S using xda app-developers app
custom roms are rearly FULLY stable. there is always a little bug here and there. but since the release of the official ICS and the latest kernel source ICS roms are getting mature at last. and if you're still not satisfied, wait a month more. or flash the official ICS and have a really stable rom now.
JB is another story. there is no native kernel source for it and i doubt there will ever be.
I totally see where you are both coming from. The kernel source was released over a fortnight ago.
I agree with Ben, in respect we should appreciate what the current devs have given us etc etc,
But I also agree with skim, I am quite surprised that with the kernel source released, AOSP still hasn't got a functional kernel based on our Saga build. (Andromadus is using a kernel port)
I was hoping for at least ICS AOSP to be working by now, but I guess that is not the case
The forums have certainly gone a lot quieter now, and I suspect by the end of the year, even more of us will leave
But back to the original point, I wish that things could pick up like they were this time last year, but sadly that will never happen.
I have no intentions of insulting any devs, I truly appreciate the work they have provided us, and I haven't contributed anything particularly useful, so I am in no position to do so, but this is just how I feel.
When I look through forums like the S2, I envy the development... even after a year, ROMs are still on full scale, with so many choices to choose from...

Unfortunately Oly I don't think that you can compare the DS to the SGS2. We unfortunately were never a main stream device (like the SGS2), we sadly missed the boat, with the Sensation coming out shortly after our release, I reckon that the focus went from DHD to Sensation and the limelight never really shone on us long enough to get a main stream following.
The Samsung onslaught appears to unbeatable currently sadly even the One series hasn't really made a dent.
We must all accept the inevitable that our device (Desire S) is by fact outdated with the phase of how fast mobile technology comes. That said, sooner or later, our thread will surely die.
It is with great appreciation that our devs are prolonging the inevitable. Most will surely be having new devices comes these coming months. I too will be leaving the scene as a new device is surely coming at hand in two months time.
Everything in our life changes. One must be oblige to flow with it. If not, one will be left alone and at lost.
P.S.
For an answer for the OP. THERE WILL BE a stable JB/ICS ROM as long as a dev will be willing to still work on it. If not, then THERE WILL BE NOT.
Long answer short: we will never know unless there will be one.
Moral of this post: learn to accept the truth that you have to move on to a new device if you really want to have a stable up-to-date ROM, even past JB.

I think custom roms have advantages, but it's not easy for the devs to make them perfect.
If i compare the stock ROM of x10mini/pro with custom cm6/7 ROM, the stock ROM sucks...

At the moment i'm using stock rom (sense) too, cause my prefered custom rom has still a problem with battery drain...
As soon this is fixed, i'll go to ICS DS again...
But at all, the ICS stock rom is working very nice...
Fallout v4.4.0 is pretty stable to me, been using since a while now.
Tonight i'll try Fallout 5.0, let's see how it is... :highfive:
MIUI 2.8.x or 2.9.x
I recently flashed MIUI 2.8.17 and its been a joyful ride! It is very very stable. I had to reboot only once so far and that is an intermittent bug. BT/WiFi/Tethering/Camera etc. etc. everything works! (hard to find that in an ICS ROM)! Its my daily ROM now.. :good:
Fallout 5.0
I got myself S-off and rooted 2 days ago.
The first custom rom Ive tried is Fallout 5.0. Only one day into my test and it's very stable and fast compared to stock gingerbread.
I'm very pleased with it so far :good:

My Gingerbread stock rom experience made me root my phone. I kept getting the white screen with the green HTC logo and no matter what I did it always came back. I have now tried out about 5 or 6 custom roms and this issue no longer appears. Of course there are other issues, some of which are serious. But there are ROMs which are in general more than good enough for day to day usage. I currently use ICE-DSv5 but for example Fallout v4.4 is stable (v5 is not stable for me but it is for a lot of people).
If you are interested you can look at my other thread here called "My First Rooted Phone" for an overview of my experiences so far.
Blindbean and Codename are great JB roms, not fully stable, but good to work with.
Yes. I flash every recent roms so I know how they are. I started this thread to get an idea of if it is possible to have a stable rom. The devs have been struggling with major bugs since early this year and we're still stuck with the same bugs we had prior to the release of the kernel sources. I do know it is a difficult process. But wanted an answer from a dev. Is it possible for us to have working front cam, proper video playback, etc. ? This isn't complaining btw just wanted an answer other than "be patient. Be thankful. It's good enough"

if you want stable flash rooted stock. it has everything you mentioned. combine it with tweaked kernel and you have even more...
Hey guys,
I am currently running (and loving) the Senseless RebelROM Beta that came out back in December. The development thread for it has unfortunately gone AWOL, but the combination of AOSP-theming, Jelly Bean-smoothness, and Sense camera made it my favorite One X ROM to date. The biggest drawback, currently, is that the video camera is still broken - as was common with many of the early Sense Jelly Bean ROMs.
Unfortunately, the developer is incredibly busy, and hasn't had a chance to update the ROM in over a month. In the meantime, I was hoping I could make either an updated ROM or, preferably, a simple flashable ZIP, that would fix the camera issue. I was curious what changes had to be made to other Sense JB ROMs in order to fix the camera? Is this something that could easily be done to an existing ROM, or is it more complicated than that?
I'm actually a software engineer by trade and have been hoping to dip my toes into Android development, so this seemed like a fun and useful project to start with. Any tips would be great!
Would absolutely love for this to get fixed. I'm running ViperXL but if the cam gets fixed I'm definitely switching back to RebelROM.
Well, the good news is, I figured out how to fix the broken camera.
The even better news is, I've posted the fix as a flashable ZIP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2120153
Enjoy!
