[Q]Sensation 4g TMO..root/boot issues - HTC Sensation

To All, Hey members. Im new to the community but have been a avid follow of this site for quite some time now. I am pretty tech savy and feel like I can fix this problem. The problem being this: I have a sensation 4g from tmobile that was given to me cause someone attempted to root it and couldnt get it done. So as of right now, I can get to the bootloader screen and it has recovery 4xt as well. I have yet to root a device but have been researching it quite thoroughly on here and with the phone being in the state its in, i felt rather opposed to ask instead of taking initiative and risking bricking the device.
As listed on bootloader screen:
-Revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.17.1111
RADIO-10.14.9035.01_M
eMMC-boot
Jun 2 2011,22 22:31:39
On the SDcard i was able to see the two roms and the other file listed below.
I attempted to install Elegancia one and went through the process fine and upon reboot it stops, same with the other rom.
Elegancia_ICS_TMOUS_V3.0.0
Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.6.7
su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed
So where can I can from here?? I feel like theres something i can do to pick up where the previous person left off, or maybe start over possibly. I have my laptop and am eager to follow instructions to accomplish this task at hand. Im open to all feedback and would appreciate the help to further my knowledge of Android devices and rooting in a whole To add, I have not installed anything to my laptop at this time.

Check if Desire S is S-OFF (noob)

So i got my Desire S this week nd i LOVE it. It's my first android phone, so i wud like 2 root it. How can i check if it's S-On or S-OFF ?? I live in India if that makes any difference. Also, is rooting tougher than jailbreaking? Cuz i've jailbroken about 10 of my frndz iPods (and my own iPod 4) nd it's quite easy. Thanks

You basically perform most of the steps to perform a factory reset, but not the last...
1. Power Off Phone.
2. Remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, then reinsert the battery.
3. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER
button.
4. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release
the VOLUME DOWN button.
Now the top line of the screen should....say something like....
SAGA PVT SHIP and either S-ON or S-OFF
To get out of this screen:
1. hit the Power button
2. then the VOLUME DOWN to select REBOOT
3. then hit the POWER button
Once you have a S-OFF phone then getting root should be easy.
thnx bro. Sadly, my phone is S-On Is there any way to root S-On Or change it to S-Off?? Also, wats XTC Clip?

I can see you intention was good, but unfortunately the rooting process varies slightly between devices, this comes down to the bootloader, android version, and HTC build version, each have different parts which can be exploited in order to create a loop hole in order to abuse.
The problem is, all it takes is one person to not read your post completely, follow that guide, then when something goes wrong they're coming back and posting "HULP FONE NO BOOT WUT DO NOW?!111" on the dev board.

Hahahaha.. Got your point.. I've seen such responses when I was reading posts related to s2 rooting.. Luckily for me rooting was a breeze.. I will try your suggestions once my friend gets the desire s.. So tell me.. Your ds was s-off or s-on? If on was there any particular thread that was the most helpful
Edit: ok... read the how to s-off guide.. man its painful
When I got my HTC Desire S I was lucky to have the Telstra pre-installed ROM, S-ON, no root etc. The bootloader was the first one .. (can't think of the version sorry), which at least made the process a breeze.
But literally I took the phone out of the box (brand new haha), turned it on, rooted it, installed recovery, and installed a custom ROM.
I did complete the process using a Live USB Ubuntu, I highly recommend doing it this way, as you won't experience any issues with drives etc. It does take away a lot of the hassle you see in a lot of the threads with phones not being recognised, and what-not.

Sure, not a problem. If your able to find out the Bootloader version, ROM version etc. it would help a lot as we can at least advise you as to what you need to do in order to complete a hassle free process ;-).
Bootloader - hold volume down button, then press power on (when the phone is switched off (make sure fast boot is disabled))
ROM version - Settings > About Phone > Software Information

I s-offed and rooted last week via revolutionary
Its said loads on here but you gotta read the threads, and the old hands get annoyed if you ask questions that have been asked loadsa times before!
Using ADB ive found its way easier to copy a cmd.exe into your android-win-tools folder so you dont need to keep navigating to that folder in cmd, assuming youre using windows

[Q] Flashing Generic Firmware with S-off

Hi Guys,
Apologies if this has been discussed before. I have looked for answers everywhere and i could not find any.
Ok, I have a Desire S which is branded to Telstra (Australia), I was sick of all the useless app that Telstra had put in and wanted to get rid of all those.
I used revolutionary method to get it s-off and install Generic Firmware. After that i was happy not having any of Telstra's bloatware on the phone. Then came the update of 2.3.5 and as usual downloaded the firmware and used RRU to Update. Big mistake on my part, i didn't read anything and just tried to push RRU on the phone, the result was White screen with HTC logo and nothing past that. Tried everything no luck, then looking for answers, i found a solution to remove revolutionary, I could see revolutionary gone in HBOOT but the phone would not start.
to solve this i went to telstra to send it to repair, warranty was there and when telstra asked what happened, i said i was updating an app and it went to this screen, Tech guys said this is the similar 3rd problem in a day. so after 5 days the phone got repaired, New IMEI number and logic board had to be replaced.
Now all over again i have bunch of telstra bloatware on the phone. I want to get Generic 2.3.5 with sense 3.0. what is the process to follow so that i don't make the same mistake again?
All i want to do is get it s-off and install generic Firmware, the easiest way possible something like revolutionary. I tried going with ADB but found a bit risky.
Any advice in getting Generic HTC Desire S (2.3.5 with Sense 3.0) the easiest way would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

To get a generic firmware from some other area, you need to get Super CID. I don't know much about it, just that CID's like a region code, Super CID enables you to get generic ROMs from any region. Only XTC Clip can do that on a Desire S as far as i know. Flashing a custom ROM after Revolutionary S-OFF is a better option....
Listen, I really recommend you to use a Custom ROM based on the update if you are ready to S-OFF. Hyperion is much faster and has a lot more features. Hell, if you do S-OFF, why settle for Sense 3? Get Sense 3.5. I recommend endymion.
@shrome99: Thanks dude, correct me if i am wrong, to get a generic firmware onto the desire s there is no option but to go for s-off and customs roms are better than stock ones, the reason i am asking is i have not used custom roms and willing to stick to stock.
What is the easiest way to get the rom sorted, I know how to get the custom rom installed there are too many posts everywhere that you can read through and make a decision and find roms of your choice, but there seems to be nothing about stock roms, i am sure there are people who are willing to get stock rom and their carrier is not rolling out the update coz they want more junk to be added.
Steps on how to get generic stock rom would be really helpful.
Thanks again

IMO, if you're considering making a change then put on a decent custom (see my sig) you won't regret it

Hey Ben, Thanks for this, I went ahead and got the ROM as you suggested. Installed the base verison, then the add-on and the update. I have been palying around with it and so far loving it.
Only problem tough, I cannot use Market. I can open market look for apps and download, but when it starts to install, the phone re-boots. any known issues with this and is there a workaround to sort this out.
Ok, so here is what i did, Flashed Base version again and market started working again with no issues. Another issue which is not so much of an issue but only at night, why does the soft keys don't lit up on Desire S?. any way to fix these. Thanks guys.
Sometimes firing up and signing into Google talk makes the market start working again
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

Thanks for that, I did a search for the issue and did the same thing as you had advised, but didn't work. Then I flashed the base version again and then the update, which worked. Don't know what had happened there.
But yeah loving the new rom and i would say was a better move to be on a custom ROM and getting rid of Carrier's junk installed.
Cheers!
Ok, so instead of creating a new post i have decided to post it here since it is already been discussed.
I was happy with rooted phone and endymion Rom and was happy until my phone started heating up and restarted on its own as if it had a mind of its own, I called HTC and they advised to send it for repair, i had to unroot the phone and sent for repair. Got the phone back with updated version and i need help rooting the phone.
when i boot the phone in fast boot this is what i get:

HTC Sense Verison 3.0

Baseband Version: 2.14.841.4 CL 184593 Release-Keys
Now i need to Root the phone again so i can be another happy user of endymion.
I am looking at this guide and needed help.

The oldest RUU i can find for my provider is RUU_Saga_Telstra_WWE_1.36.841.3_Radio_20.28d.30.0805U_3805.04.02.01_M_release_184558_signed.exe
I was reading the guide and this is where i am confused.
6.This command will gets you out of adb shell.. so we need to get back to adb shell and you will see "#" sign..meaning you are temp rooted and we can then proceed to changing MISC_VERSION:
Code:
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
./misc_version -s 1.27.405.6 .
./misc_version -s 1.27.405.6 do i change this to 1.36.841.3 or leave it as it is?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
IMO you can leave it as it is. 1.27.xxx is older than your RUU version so I think it will work fine.

Thanks for that, yes i did follow the guide, and then got stuck again. The problem i am facing is after pushing all the files as of the guide, i run tacoroot the phone restarts and all i get is a red triangle with exclamation mark in it and nothing else happens.
then to get rid of it, i pull out the battery and do a complete factory reset. I have done this about 5 times now but still the same.
Also tried using super one click but that dint work either and freezes on waiting for device.
anything i have missed or is there any other solutions, any GUI programs or video to help if i am missing something.
any help is appreciated.
Thanks
I believe that you have to boot the original recovery before using tacoroot to get it working ( I mean boot it once, then boot normally).
After using tacoroot --root, your phone will probably go in bootloop, don't worry about that and change your misc_version as described in the tutorial.
And please, stop pulling out the battery, you will brick your phone this way.

Thanks dude, this worked and going thru revolutionary. i did some changes in the steps and will update what i did in a while after i get a rom installed.
Thank you everyone for help and support. i was able to downgrade my HBOOT and install a custom ROM. It would not have been possible if you guys had not supported.
one thing i have learnt is the more you read the more you find things useful and you actually learn how ti weigh your risk and benefits and avoid ending up with an expensive paper weight.
so this is what i did.
after using universal misc version file i was getting 140 error in RUU, boot loader version error, tried 3 time but would not let me get past that, then out of frustration i thought about giving it a last try for good or for worse, in the misc version section i changed a bit.
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
./misc_version -s 1.36.841.3 (Same number as my RUU)
then RUU went fine and then revolutionary.
well, if any kind of newbie person in trying to root the phone i would suggest to read and if you think you have read enough, its probably you haven't.
special thanks to @chninkel, @eyahl. Thanks Guys for all the support.
Cheers!

[Q] Rooting Shift with most current stock updates

I was foolish and allowed my shift to install all the most current updates available for the stock rom.
I am now stuck after attempting to regain root and s-off through -all- methods I can find.
I have no rom installed, RUU's do not work, I have clockwork 5.0.x.x something installed.
I try to install -any- rom and it says it installs correctly but upon reboot stays at the green HTC white background screen.
I just want to root and s-off this sucker again but NOTHING seems to work and now I think I've really done a number on it. I can't find anything that fixes it, and most of the guides I find to help refer to booting the phone up and doing something with the phone's terminal... which I can't do as there is no working OS on the phone...
Anyone know of any way to get this sucker rooted and s-off using ADB or whatnot through bootloader or fastboot?

Yup, been trying that... And I finally fixed my problem...
Something about if you have problems installing the RUU, run it twice... run it a second time...
It'll run the first time and hang, then I read that someone had luck just running it a second time. I ran it a second time and it worked somehow...
Thanks anyway!

[Q] Help with free phone with half-flash

So I lost my phone this week, and my buddy offered me up his old Inspire for free. He didn't mention the fact that it's like, midway through a failed flash (soft-bricked, I guess?). I've been searching and reading, but I just seem to get further down the rabbit hole with what exactly I'm supposed to do. Really, I haven't run across any threads with this problem yet.
It's currently S-ON, but has CWM installed. There doesn't seem to be a rom installed, because it'll hang on the HTC splash screen on boot (matter of fact, he didn't even give me an SD card with the phone, so I had to scavenge one of my good SanDisk ones) and I'm not entirely sure where to go from here to get it up and running. I don't care much for the Inspire's stock rom, but at this point I'm in dire need of a phone and if it's easier to go back to stock than it is to fix this mess and have a nice ROM, I can live for a little while.
What should I do, and how exactly should I do it? It's been quite a while since I tried this (and even then it was with my lineage of janky huawei handsets).
EDIT: I've got a screencap of the info but the board spam prevention won't let me link it.

My strong hunch is that he didn't flash the boot.img in the ROM zip, which you need to do for S-On Unlocked phones. When you flash a ROM in the recovery, make sure you also fastboot flash the boot.img from the ROM zip. The Ace Think Tank thread in DHD General has links with instructions on how to do that.

Yeah, that'll be an issue for the ROM thread. Though of course, if you didn't full wipe first, try that.

IAfter Rooting, S-Offing and installing the Viper ROM, I could not get Wifi to turn on due to a firmware issue. After countless failed attemts to get it to the current version, I decided to move back to stock.
Now, I am inable to get out of Fastboot. When I tried to flash a new ROM, I get the messgae that adb can not see my device. I have no idea what to do, please help.
On top of the astboot screen, it says:

PLEASE help, I' scared!! Thanks in advance
Hi,
I need to know your device make and model number to point you towards help.
Thanks!
Geeze, I'm sorry.
I am using an HTC One m8 with at&t. I'm not sure how to get the model number.
Also, I must have erased TWRP somehow, because when I select recovery from the Fastboot window, it brings me back to the same place.
You are s-off and super CID, easy to fix...
Here's a guide on updating firmware,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/firmware-flashing-panic-attacks-t2824048
And you can also flash recovery with fastboot again, same as you did the first time, then put a rom on an external sd card using another device, and flash it on your device from recovery from the sd card.
If you need help on those things, or want other ideas... The place to ask questions about your device is here,

Good luck!
Thanks. I'll gove it a try tomorrow when I'm not so tired.
I seriosely can't thank you enough for responding.
That did the trick! You're a life saver, I have no idea how I missed that.
One last question. Now that Firmware is update, it looks like I'm using the google ROM. Can I change it back to Venom i I prefer?
That question should probably be asked in the thread I linked 2nd. I've never converted mine to GPE, or back. ?
You're right, sorry about that.
Seriously, I have no idea how I missed that article but THANK YOU!!!! You quite literally saved my job (conference calls I needed to be on).
