[Q] Can I install a WiFi only ROM on my 4G Xoom? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up the 3G Xoom when it first released for the same price the WiFi Xoom was going to sell for. I also sent it in for the 4G LTE Upgrade when I had the chance.
I don't intend on signing up with Verizon, so I don't need the LTE aspects.
Can I install a WiFi only ROM? For instance, CM9 RC1? I realize 3G/LTE will break, but is that the only consequence?
I found some other posts regarding the Tab but it's mixed on whether or not it will work, but nothing on the Xoom.
Thanks!

Yes, it will work fine.

[Q] 3g modual

can a 3g modual be used on the g tab. if so which ones work thanks all for help
How about...?
Hopefully this isn't too off-topic but why don't you just use the 3G connection from your phone (I assume you have an android phone)? That is what a lot of folks with the gTab do now.
I have a rooted Droid X phone that I've installed Wireless Tether on and since I have an unlimited data account with Verizon I turn my phone into a 3G hotspot and connect my gTab to it to surf when I'm out and about. This works great for me since I always have my phone with me.
Anyway, hopefully this info helps as I do not know of a way to add a 3G module to the gTab. Some folks have been discussing using a 3G or 4G usb dongle modem but I don't think they've been able to get that to work yet.
Good luck,
Steve

Absolutely agree!
I was in the quest of finding 3G module for my tab, preferably GSM, not CDMA (Werizon).
Later on I started counting and something dawned on me....LOL
If I install that module on G-Tab.... I have to pay for the access...
Since I already paying for my phone data plan, it would be a double whammy..
I have HD2 running WinMo 6.5 and WMWiFiRouter, which is the great program to tether to G-Tab.
Hope it helps.

[Q] Anyone have the WiFi Xoom working with their Atrix through WiFi Hotspot

I have an unlocked Atrix with Fido in Canada. I can't use the default Mobile Hotspot because it says I need to get it enabled through AT&T. I've tried Barnacle and WiFi tether and although they work as a wifi hotspot, the Xoom cannot see either network. I think both run as Ad-hoc networks and the Xoom does not see Ad-hoc networks.
Anyone able to get their Xoom connected through their Atrix using a WiFi hotspot? If so, can you let me know how you got it working?
I just setup a hotspot on my Atrix just now. I am posting this connected thru that connect right now!

What did you do to get this to work? Did you use the inbuilt Mobile Hotspot to get it going? Do you have tethering enabled through AT&T?
I am using the built in hotspot. No tethering plan, just added the new apn. When I start up the wifi on the Atrix I get a message about needing to call CS. Then it starts working fine.
Ahh, I presume the new APN is only for AT&T customers. What are folks not on AT&T doing to connect up an Atrix and the Xoom?

Hi
I have the same question but for an Atrix and Xoom UK, connected with Virgin Mobile.
I have two good offers, one from a service provider, the other from Virgin.
My heart would go for the Atrix, but my brain says Samsung Galaxy S2. It is all about compatibility between phone and tablet, and their WiFi hotspot.
Which one to choose? They both come free, but are they compatible?
Atrix-Xoom or Samsung G2-Xoom?
And one more, is the Atrix compatible with macs running OXS 10.5?
Decision, decision..
Thanks
T.

I sold my Atrix and picked up a Samsung GS II. The Atrix had amazing hardware, but I felt the software (Motoblur, crappy firmware and a locked bootloader) were too problematic too deal with. I've had my GS II for over four months and am pretty happy with it.
It works really well as a hotspot for the Xoom.

[Q] Need advice on good phone (AT&T) to use with Xoom

Although I do have the Xoom 3G I'd like to use my phone (unlimited data plan) for the rare occasion that I need to access the internet w/o WiFi. Apparently I am eligible to upgrade my company phone (from iPhone 3GS).
I was following several threads about people complaining about problems they had trying to tether their phones to the Xoom. My attempts to get an answer to which phone is currently good (the best?) failed.
So here's my question: What phone from AT&T would be a good substitute for the iPhone 3GS? It needs to be able to tether with the Xoom.
Thanks everyone!
(PS: Please spare me replies like "every phone is better than the iPhone"... )
Nexus S would make for the ultimate pair with the Xoom.
I have the HTC Inspire and have used the Wifi hotspot for my Xoom many times with no problem of holding signal, plus the fact that the Inspire is 802.11N and so is the Xoom and the speed is great with the inspire. AT&T is also releasing the HSUPA update for it starting next week so it will be great also, I already have Hsupa because I am running Coredroid on my rooted phone and it screams.
Nexus S, Inspire "4G", and the Atrix "4G" if you can live without roms. OR wait for the Galaxy S 2. It has a quadrant HIGHER THAN THE XOOM'S!
Thank you all for the input. I checked the Nexus S but it doesn't seem to be available from AT&T. I can still wait though!
[sent with Xooming Android technology]
highly recoommend the atrix. Would stay away from samsung,

[Q] 3G -- add-on or built-in?

Hi all,
I'm considering whether to get a TF now, or wait until a 3G version comes out.
Based on some specs it seems 3G will be offered as an option, but it's unclear whether the 3G can be a home-installed add-on, a store-installed add-on, something factory installed that can't be retrofitted to a wifi-only system, or (shudder) something only available through carriers.
I'm prepared to wait, but would prefer to buy a wifi-only one now if I had confidence that I could add on the 3G when it became available.
Can anyone shed some light on how the TF will include 3G?
Thanks!
I think that you would have to wait for asus to make one with 3G. I think I remember seeing someone mention sometime in summer for 3G.
I highly doubt 3g will be an add-on.
Do you not have an Android phone?
Why get 3g just use your mobiles connection
sent from my LEE Pad Transformer........I wish
Sure, I could tether to a phone. However I'd like to reduce the amount of gear that I need to carry around, keep charged, etc.
A Mifi unit or something would work well. I keep one in the business card slot of my laptop bag and plan to shift it over to the tablet case once mine is delivered.

Xyboard 8.2 Wi-Fi only or 4G LTE version?

Hi all,
I am planning to get the Xyboard 8.2, what are the advantages of the Wi-Fi only vs the Bid Red 4G version?
Thanks

Cheaper? You lose the convenient of having an always on internet device

With the 4G you have to get a data plan (or buy off contract for a boatload more, I guess?).
I see your sig says you have a photon 4G. I have CM7.2 on my photon and simply broadcast the hotspot when I don't have wifi on my Xoom and I want to use my Xoom to browse instead of my phone.

Well, I never buy at full price. It's easy to get it from craigslist, so far I can get the 32GB for $500 same price Motorola is selling the Wi-Fi only version.
As for internet, my phone can provide that.
Photon 4G rooted, I will soon flash CM9.
