cant voice dial contacts, only local results - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my dads stock nexus s 4g will not voice dial (or text) any of his contacts, it only does local results. with every android phone ive had i can hit the mic in the google search bar, say "call john doe" and my phone will call it, or i say "send text to john doe what time is dinner" and it will have john doe in the to field and "what time is dinner" in the message field. on his phone i say "call john doe" and it finds a local result for john doe and calls them, or it does a google search for "call john doe." if i say "send text to john doe what time is dinner" the to field will be blank, and the message will say "to john doe what time is dinner." if i use the crappy voice dialer instead of voice actions it will call the contact. i cant for the life of me figure out why this wont work on his nexus, someone help!

Open the Google Search app, hit menu and settings then adjust the searchable terms to include contacts. Hopefully should work.

Direct voicemail dial

Hi all!
I've a Touch Cruise. When in phone I used to continue press number 1 and it dials to my voicemail service.
But one day this didn't work anymore. I continue press 1 and nothing, but it works with direct dials 2 to 9... any clues?
I've seted the voicemail number...
Best,
Juan
Go into the phone application -
choose menu/options...
select services tab at the bottom
select Voice Mail and Text Messages and press the Get Settings button
make sure the Voice Mail: box has the correct number for your network's voice mail access.
thanks gadgetgaz,
I've already done it, and also deleted the number and re entered it, but it still do not work... any other clue?
best,
Juan

Voice Command???

AT&Ts website says that it supports voice dialing. The Samsung Galaxy S website says that there should be a Voice Command app. Where is it? I don't see it anywhere! I paried up my bluetooth headset and when I push the button (which on my last phone would activate Voice Dial) nothing happens.
Anyone??
Voice dialing via bluetooth on Android 2.1 doesn't work.
Android 2.2 fixes it (Nexus One FTW!), who knows when Captivate will get the update.
Tap and hold the Search button to activate voice search.
There should be an app called Voice Dialing. Use that to voice dial.

I beg to differ, I just figured this out. You can say "call -contact name-" and it dials the number.

Don't know what magic you're doing, but when I do that it just does a google search for "call [contact name]"
My Captivate does the same thing, I have tried to voice dial and all it does is google search. Everyone keeps saying there is an app but there isn't. It is pissing me off, I downloaded apps and none of them work. This really really bites.
I will be watching this thread anxiously.
But I may be making progress! I have purchased VLingo, and it looks like it may end up working like Microsoft Voice Command.
I just did a "Call <First/Last Name> on Mobile, and it dialed".
I'll post back as I progress. This is exactly what I"m looking for.

I'm not sure either then. I simply hold the search button at the bottom-right of the phone, it prompts for voice, then i simply say "call XXXXXXX" and it dials. I do have to say the entire contact name, though, both first and last name, exactly how it appears in the list. But it works
I just tried it and it worked for me too. FAST.
What is missing is a validation step, like MS Voice command offers. It will never understand you correctly all the time.
No Voice Dial for Me Too!
I don't seem to have the ability to voice dial either.
Speaking a contact's name into the Google utility only pulls up a Google search.
I would be interested to know if the people that are having similar problems have their phones rooted or not.
I am rooted.
I am rooted, as of this morning, and it was just an hour or so when I realized I could do it with Google search and didn't need Vlingo

I could do it before I was rooted
When I use voice dial I have to say contact name and either mobile or home or work to get it to work right.
How is Voice Dial Activated?
How, exactly, are successful users activating Voice Dial?
Is it just by pressing the microphone button on the Google search bar on the home screen? Or is there supposed to be a dedicated "Voice Dial" app?
Also, where are the settings located to configure voice dial?
I was able to get it work. I use the google search widget and click the microphone then speak. BUT, it only finds contacts that are from Google. If I try to call any of my Exchange contacts it does a google lookup, but if it is a contact from google sync (gmail/voice) it works fine.
I can't get mine to work. Been trying it for the past two days.
The google search voice command isn't voice dialing for me. I have no idea what is going on. HELP ME lol

I can't wait for a custom ROM to fix all the problems including this.
We've Been Scammed!!!
AT&T has scammed us!
I chatted online today with ATT support and the person said that I would have to pay monthly for their voice dial service. After telling her, politely, where to stick her voice dial service, she suggested that I contact Samsung.
After 45 mins, and two support people later, it was finally explained to me that the Captivate is the only version of the Galaxy S that does NOT come equipped with the Voice Command software and that I would have to purchase a third party app from the Market in order to get that capability.
So what it looks like to me is that ATT had the voice command function removed on the Captivate so they could push their own voice dial plan for $4.99 per month.
BASTERDS!!!
I can't wait for the ROMs to start rolling out so I can exact my revenge!

you have to say the full name thats in the address book for it to immediately dial as well. if you dont it shows the "did you mean" box and you can choose from there.
I installed Vlingo from Marketplace. Works like a charm. The programs from Marketplace are all pretty cheap compared to WindowsMobile.
My voice dial works. however I have to enunciate very clearly and quickly.
"call Contact Name" brings me to the Contact's page to select which number to dial.
"call Contact Name mobile" dials immediately.
There is even a confirmation feature for my phone where it gives a pop up with my Contact's picture with a ring slowly rotating around it with an option to "dial" or "cancel" doing nothing until the ring completes it's 360 degree rotation will default to dialing, pressing dial will dial immediately, and cancel will cancel the command.

Google Voice stuck at the "Set up voicemail" screen

I am running the "gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.1.user.final" ROM.
Was able to sign up for Google Voice, setup phones for a landline number and Google chat.
From my desktop PC, I am able to login to Google Voice and use it to make and receive calls.
But when I try to setup Google Voice on the G Tab, it seems to get stuck on the "Set up voicemail" screen
"We have a problem"
"Your voicemail settings could not be loaded. Please try again."
If I hit "OK" then "Next", it goes back to "We have a problem".
If I hit "Skip" then it is stuck in this "Set up voicemail" screen with the "Back" and "Next" buttons grayed out.
I have read several posts similar to this problem.
What I don't understand is why does it think that this G Tab is a phone?
What should I do?
I am having the same issue. Google Voice had been working before but I recently had to wipe user data and now when I go through the setup it gets stuck exactly as you described. Has anyone found a solution. btw I am running tnt lite 4.2.5
Hope this helps or Hope I'm right

I could be completely wrong, but I had the same problem, my conclusion is that google voice is trying to identify your number through voicemail BUT...it can't because there's no sim card. I don't know I might be wrong. Hopefully someone else can come in and correct me or confirm the info. Good luck.
I downloaded the googlevoice apk file from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959310
Installed this apk file.
Rebooted the G Tab.
Started over the Google Voice settings.
This time I moved beyond the "Set up voicemail" screen.
Finished the Google Voice setup completely.
When I try to use Google Voice using my Landline as the forwarded phone, it works.
But when using Google chat as the forwarded phone:
When I try to use Google Voice to make an outbound call, Google Voice says that it is calling me but I do not see any inbound calls on the G Tab.
When I call my Google Voice number from any landline phone, on the landline phone I can hear the ringing but I do not see any inbound calls on the G Tab.
What am I missing?
I just want to make and receive calls in Google Voice from the G Tab.
Trust me,
Google voice still works for text and calls. Once you sign in just hi the home button. You can then select a contact to text or call. It infuriated me to no end untilled I figured this out. Now I call my best friend in Hawaii for free.

I was messing with Google Voice just last night. I found a post that suggested getting to the voicemail page and then just backing all the way out of GV again. I did that then went to test by sending my very first SMS from my gtab (i think I went to the 'phone' app then found the contact I wanted then long pressed or something then saw a little message button, clicked it and it took me to a place to type a text... and based on the tiny icon on the top I believe I was actually in Google Voice). Oh and the sms went through. As far as calling goes I didn't test it but I'm pretty confident that if I just go to the phone app and dial a number it will work. If I had my gtab with me I'd put my money where my mouth it right now.
I'll check on this thread when I get home later and let you know if I have better details or new info.
Good luck!
I had the same problem but resolved it by downloading the latest Google Voice from the market. Went through the setup again and when it failed the first time I found the "Skip" button had been moved and worked flawlessly.
According to Google Voice -> Settings -> About ->
I am running Build number 0.4.2.13
Is this the latest?

That's the build I have and is the current build in the market (as far as I can see...).
It is not just the Google Voice app on the G Tab.
When I open the web browser.
I log in to the Google Voice web page
https://www.google.com/voice
I click the Call button.
In the Number to call field, I enter a friend's landline number.
In the Phone to call with, I select Google Talk.
When I hit connect, it says "calling you ..."
But there is no ringing on the G Tab?
So what exactly is it calling?
I powered off the G Tab.
Use the same Google id on my desktop to access the Google Voice web page.
Made the same outbound call, it works.

I have been searching the market for "Google Voice" but I don't see any such app in the market.
Is "Google Voice" the correct term to search for?

Yes, that is correct. If it isn't there then you probably need to perform one or more of the market fix procedures first.

Last I heard, Google Talk for Android did not yet support voice/video calls. You should still be able to have it set up a call to your landline or cell.

I had the similar problem. I finished the install the file you provided. Voice mail set up was done. But, when I go back to the home screen, click on the phone button on the right side of the screen (one of the three button) and dialed a number. It says call setup failed. I am not sure why that happened. Does anyone know? I just want to be able to make calls, no need to receive calls. Thanks

Google Talk for Android (the app on the G Tablet) is not the same as the Windows app or the browser plugin for desktop machines. It doesn't support voice or video calls so when you select it to be used from Google Voice it won't work. To make and/or receive calls from GV on your tablet you must use a VOIP product and set it up in GV as you would any other phone. There are threads on this forum that discuss how to do that.
You can still initiate calls from your mobile or landline by setting them up in GV then selecting the appropriate one in the "phone to call with" menu from the web page.
Interestingly... you can also log into Google Talk (or gmail with the GT plugin) from your desktop and use your G Tablet to initiate a call using that instance of Google Talk.

Google voice...

Ahhhhhh! Someone please help me. My Google voice isn't acting right. I've used Google voice a lot for my voicemail only. That's what I always did, I never ran into issues. Now all my text messages, incoming calls are coming through Google voice. I don't understand. I just want to use it for my voice mail. Like usual. I even went on the Google voice settings web page. I can't figure out how to disable my text messages from coming through gvoice. Can anyone help me? Thanks
I could only see this happening if people were calling and texting your Google Voice number (you can find this in GV settings on your phone) instead of your actual phone number (the one given to you by your carrier). Google voice, I believe, is unable to intercept text messages not routed to your GV number.

voice dialling help needed

HI,
I am having difficulty getting my OPO stock to voice dial. I say "Call Peter Jones", the phone searches, finds Peter Jones and says "calling Peter Jones.." then it sits on the dialer screen with Peter's number waiting on me to press the call button. Is there anyway of getting it go ahead and dial the number?
