[Q] Something went wrong while following guides, now I'm not sure where to start now. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

This is my first Android and I've been reading a lot and following some guides to eventually get to my goal of having cleanrom installed.
So far I've rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and attempted to install clockwork recovery mod...I think.
Everything went fine until the clockwork business. I followed this guide(XDA wont let me post the URL... google "clockwork on htc one x" and it's the first link), and everything worked until the last step. Which is booting into clockwork recovery.
When I go into my bootloader and highlight recovery and press power the phone turns off, the comes up with the HTC screen. Then it goes black and comes up with another HTC screen with red lettering at the bottom that says something like "this is a non-public htc build that isn't safe blabla..." then it turns off. If I try to reboot the phone stays in this loop.
To get out of it I have to go into my boot loader and boot normally to the phones OS.
From where I am now, what is my next step to get to my goal of cleanrom?

Sounds like you installed clockwork for the international one x. Look for either twrp or cwm in our development section. Either one works and will solve the problem.

Someone needs to change the guide or add a sticky...
DL Goo Manager from the Play Store...hit the settings button and install recovery from there. You'll have the newest TWRP

Thank you so much gunny and rquinn. I'm trying the goo manager right now. I appreciate your assistance.

I seriously want to go to att corporate hq and beat someone's head in for not calling this phone the one xl. Causes lots of problems.

Help. Please.

My phone is stuck in a bootloop, and I can not get into clockwork and my phone won't flash a rom! It always just says parsing... and goes back to the menu. Recovery goes to a fading black screen. How do I fix this thing? None of the other posts are descriptive enough or actually worked.
So you can't even get into recovery?
Are you familiar with ADB?
If not just google it and see if that helps any.
I'm pretty green myself, but if you hold the down volume and power can you get to hboot? If you can, put the stock rooted PD98img.zip file on you sd card. Go to hboot. Select recovery and see if it can find that file on your zip card. That should get you back to stock rooted (You are rooted I'm guessing). From there you should be able to flash a back up or a new ROM. Again, I'm a noob too, but that worked for me.
Alright, that was gonna be the next thing I tried actually, I guess the stock rooted rom has something special about it that makes it work?
Magic?
When all else fails that has just been the easiest place for me to go back to and start over.
Also, what is the best version of CWM to flash from rom manager to ensure CWM works without the black screen issue that you get without Eng S-OFF?
I get black screen with all of them. I did try down grading my hboot with this process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003086&highlight=eng
And it worked, but then when I tried to back uo with CWN 2.x i ended up in a soft boot loop. I haven't tried it agian yet but I am going to. Then I will use CWM 3.X to do the back up and see if it works.
Alright, be sure to get back with your results, my phone is flashing right now! I can't thank you guys enough! I'll rep you and what not (am I thinking of the right forum?), major thanks guys!

[Q] Phone won't boot into recovery, please help

Hi. This is the first time I've tried to install custom rom's on my phone so bear with me. I followed a post (since I can't post links yet just google: CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) for HTC One X is Here. It's the first link) detailing how to install CM9 on the OneX. Everything worked up until step 16 where you have to boot into recovery mode. When I select recovery mode from the bootloader, the phone just tries to restart and gets stuck at the HTC loading screen with a message underneath saying that this ROM is not official etc.
Is there an easy way to try and fix this and make it work properly? I've tried erasing the fastboot cache and that didn't make a difference. At this point I don't really care if I have to erase everything and just go back to what I had before. The phone doesn't show up as a drive on the PC when I plug it in.
Any help would be great!
SOLUTION: Ok this is what I did to get it working again. My phone is on Rogers so I had to download this RUU and then follow these steps to flash the RUU onto the phone. Pretty simple actually.
Well, I can tell you that the ROM you were trying to flash was not for the S4 variant of the HTC One X, the ROM you saw was for the international Tegra 3 chip which is VERY different. I would attempt to flash an RUU from the At&T HOX thread if that is possible. Sorry if I can't be of any more help, that's all I've got.
I just had this exact same problem on mine. Well I didn't try to install a full rom, but accidently tried to apply the mod where you remove the menu bar and remap the keys that was for the HTC One X (Internation/Tegra3) to my HTC One X (AT&T) and what happened was it would freeze at the HTC One Beats Audio screen and not do anything. Tried going to Recovery as well and nothing. So I thought. What I had to do was unplug my phone from USB, hold down power for about 7 seconds until screen goes black, immediately after screen goes black, release power button and start to hold down volume down button, this should get you to the Recovery menu. From here what you will need to do is go into FlashBoot, and then from ur PC (or mac... hopefully PC though) you need to relock your BootLoader, and get stock recovery (if you changed it). After this reboot and then go back into Recovery, FastBoot, and connect to PC. Now download the AT&T RUU (i used the newest, 1.85) and run through those steps. After this is finished phone should boot fine and your expensive device is saved.
Oh by the way, I'm an evolving Noob. Just started to do anything ...interesting... with my phone today, crap went down, and using these steps I was able to fix it, so if I am off on some of my steps or unclear, just comment please and I'll try and correct myself or giver farther details on what I did.
-Good Luck
Thanks for the replies but I think my situation is further complicated by the fact that my phone is a Rogers phone. I know the RUU is 1.73.631.1 but I don't know if a stock recovery is available for Rogers yet. It sounds like all I have to do is find the correct RUU and flash it to the phone.
TrueLandon, you said after you held the power button down for 7 seconds you could put the phone into recovery mode. Would that be the same thing as the bootloader menu (where you can select fastboot, factory reset etc)?

Yes, sorry if I were unclear, still trying to learn the lingo and technical terms , and yea, that's what you would need then is the RUU for Rogers, but I think the other steps should work for you.
I'll PM you a link to 1.73 RUU for Rogers

The facepalm is significant and this makes me wish HTC forced carriers to label the S4 One X as the One XL.
If your bootloader was unlocked, lock the bootloader and run the RUU from fastboot.
Thanks for the replies guys. Truelandon sent me the RUU that I need for my phone but there's no .exe file in it. I was just wondering if I can somehow use these files and flash my phone with this RUU. Most of the files that I ended up downloading are disk image files.
Addition to the issue
I flashed a cm9 rom on my hox (international version). Its working fine but the only issue is that i want to install black and cyan theme to it and when i try to flash it and the moment i hit recovery in boot loader my phone restarts and comes back normal.so i can't enter cwm to flash the theme.

Wrong forum you have the international one x the is the one xl forum so we can't really help your phone has completely different partitions.
The only thing I would suggest is to reflash your cwm and see if it helps.

Unlocking/Recovery question

So I rooted my ATT One X and recently used the tool to get the token and unlock it via HTC. I've tried to install CWM via ROM manager and it says it is installed but if I try and boot to recovery it hangs at a screen with an HTC Logo saying that "this build is for development purposes only, etc..."
If I power down and reboot with the vol down held I get the menu and it says tampered, unlocked, S-On. Trying to boot into recovery from this menu produces the same result.
I'm sure I'm missing something here since I'm a bit of a noob with this but can anyone give me a suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
Ok, looks like I managed to get it down through ADB commands. It's times like this when us noobs actually learn a little bit about our phone
As you've discovered, I don't think that ROM Manager properly installs CWM on our phone. The best way is the one-click install in the Development forum.

Bricked Inspire After New Rom Install

hello all,
I am new here and I have been searching the forums for a few days as well as the internet but I could not seem to find one that had my same problem, but if there is can you please direct me to it and apologies for that.
I was installing a new rom, the Blackout ICS Incredible v3.0.0 FULLY WORKING!!! [4.0.4][Sense 3.6], onto my inspire i did a full wipe using FULL_WIPE_1.5_EXT4_.zip and I cleared the caches. the install i thought went well because it went to 100% and i even chose what kind of background i could as well as choosing to over clock my processor. The phone the restarted after all of that and it went to the htc screen then faded to black, after about ten minutes of it being black screen i pulled out the battery.
Now when i try to recover it it wont go into hboot and it just goes to the htc white screen then it quickly fades to a black screen and stays like that.
so my question to you all is a Jtag the only way i can save my phone or is there something else i can do?

Im sorry but I dont understand. I cannot enter hboot no mater what i do and don't you need to enter hboot to reflash it?
True, but I'm hoping you are doing something wrong.
Pull battery, wait a few minutes, place back in. Press and hold Volume down, then power button. Does it go into hboot? If not.
Read this.

Edit: you are the first report with that issue after trying to flash that rom. My bet (that is, if you are new), you are not doing something wrong.
2nd edit: if you are new, then read the guide in post#7

I really appreciate the help Teichopsia , but I've tried the power /volume - method many times and it still wont go to hboot. if it helps this is the 5 time i have have flashed a rom on my phone (and it is rooted) and yes sadly i had to be the first person to be unlucky enough to get my phone bricked from the blackout rom :crying:
i think i could get out of this mess if i could only get into hboot.
reading the method you linked to me will it work if i cant even get to the hboot screen? my phone only stays of the white htc logo screen for about 3 seconds then it goes to a lit black screen
on a side note should i report what happened to team blackout to see if they have any soloutions?
The only thing I can think of is trying to get into hboot without the sd card and sim card.
The rest is beyond my knowledge.
You'll need to wait for someone more knowledgable than myself to help you.
Remember, first press and hold the volume down button, while holding that down press the power button. Do not release either button till it shows the hboot. If that doesn't work, pull the battery for five minutes and try again. If you did this part exactly like that, then you can skip it.
Well, you already posyed your issue here, just wait for someone to help you. Glevitan is bound to show up sooner or later.

I would see if you can send commands to it from adb while its in the blacked out state. adb is pretty easy to use and can be found easy online. if you get it installed type "adb devices", if it recognizes your device type "adb reboot bootloader" or "adb reboot recovery".

i also have the same problem. i'm using a DHD. and to add to that, my volume rocker is broken. i wonder why the warning not to select reboot immediately after installation wasnt part of the download as a readme or something. i may have just lost a perfectly good phone as a result
I can confirm as a third user and one knowledgable in flashing roms that the ICS blackout does the same thing to my phone. I can also confirm that pulling the battery and then trying hboot just results in the white htc screen instead of just popping up hboot. I was able to boot into recovery from the white htc screen by using adb and doing the "adb reboot recovery" command. I am able to restore my backup just fine so you guys will be able to fix it. it must just have a bad boot image for the version of hboot that we have installed.

Im sorry but this is the first time i have ever done something like that can you give me a step by step instruction how to do it or a link that says how, i dont want to sound lazy but I scared to mess up my phone even more
Use this guide its very easy. if you have already used your phone on your pc and the drivers are installed all you need to do is download the easyadb and follow the instrucions to where is says to type adb.exe. once it is started just type adb devices to make sure it sees your device and then adb reboot recovery
Ignore the fact the instructions are written for a xoom as it will work for any android device with the drivers already installed, which they should be from rooting, syncing and all the other stuff you have probably already done on pc.
UPDATE: I reinstalled ICS blackout but instead of wiping myself i just let aroma installer do it and everything went fine this time. I noticed the aroma installer reformats everything to ext4. its not mentioned in the op as a requirement but seems thats the case. Hboot version has nothing to do with it like i previously commented. It really is a cool rom with both ics and sense. I have only tried the sense version so far
Hope this helps?

Just in case-- to get into recovery you must press and hold the volume down for a few seconds and then hold the power button. Do not do press them both at the same time. I realize you wrote that your volume rocker seems or is broken but I wrote above just in case-- when I first tried to root my phone, I was pushing them both at first and thought my rocker was broken....
Since you rooted the phone originally-- not sure how you did it. But if you go to this link you can download recovery flash. Read the "readme" file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29208930&postcount=10
Assuming you can get into recovery-- then reload the blackout ROM but you MUST let the aroma installer wipe and format do not use any other wipe/format tool. Then do NOT press the "FINISH" button-- instead press the back arrow-- you want to go back to flash recovery and reboot from there. If you press finish (like I did multiple times, the phone will just lockup).
Best of luck!
Three of us confirmed that hboot was inaccessible even after battery pull. I am no stranger to this device as well. The only fix was using adb reboot. Also if you actually reformat your partitions to ext4 before install, then aroma will install correctly. It's just not mounting anything if it's still in ext3 format. Definitely better to just do the full wipe within aroma though. I do agree with not hitting restart from aroma but someone already mentioned that a few posts up.
Thank you thank you thank you
After putting it into abd it recognized it and then i was able to put it into hboot. Im not out of the woods yet, but after not being to see hboot in so long, well its just amazing to see it again
ok now its in hboot it gives me 4 choices
bootloader
Reboot
Reboot Bootloader
power down
apologies again but just for reassurance which one should i select?
THANK YOU GUYS for getting me this far!!!
special thanks to Gizmoe for suggesting the adb route

Need help with HTC One X Rogers

Hi
I went with trying to root, unlock bootloader, and install CYM10 on my One X, through TWRP 2.2. (im a noob)
I got to installing/flashing the CM10 rom, said it was successful, rebooted, and I got stuck at forever loading screen for Cyanogen.
I dont know what went wrong, I wiped system, now the device just keeps rebooting and showing the HTC quietly brilliant page (with dev msg) and does nothing. Bricked?
I cant seem to just turn this damn this off to go to the bootloader, it just keeps rebooting by itself.
Aka Im guessing i dont have a backup? I did one through the Goo app though
Anything I can do? I cant even access to bootloader
please help!
Try this to get into bootloader:
Hold the power button, until the capacitive buttons flash a couple times. After that, the phone will power off and reboot. Immediately once the screen goes dark, let go of the power button and hold the volume down rocker. Don't let go of vol down until the white bootloader screen comes up.
Once there, try to go to recovery and restore your TWRP backup.
Make sure too that you're using an "evita" build of CM10 (ie. not "endeavour"). If you somehow loaded an "endeavour" build, which is for the International One X, I doubt you would have seen any boot animation at all (and you may have in fact bricked your phone)... but still, it's good to check.
The CM10 builds you should be using are those linked to in the thread:
[ROM][OFFICIAL CM10] CyanogenMod 10 Nightly Builds for HTC One XL
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790032
Specifically, builds posted at http://get.cm/?device=evita are the ones you want.
