[Q] Difference between older S3 and newer S4? - HTC One S

What is difference between these 2 types? I see S3 got lower score in quadrant. What are other differences, which are more important? Thx

S3 is based on Qualcomms Scorpion architecture, which has been used in S1, S2 and S3 while S4 is based on Qualcomms new Krait architecture, which is vastly faster clock to clock.

Im little bit dissapointed. I really wanted One S,unless I got S3:-/ Now I dont know if should I sell it and buy One S with S4 or let it be and stay with S3

I'd just return it to the store if they didn't make it clear it's S3 when they sold it

And do you think its reason that they will replace it ?It was bought 4.6.2012,so maybe it was some of the "wrong" models

My box said s4. Check yours.

Post-HTC One S

So what do you guys think about the next few weeks. The Samsung Galaxy S3, quad core phones coming to US, maybe new release for TMobile US. I am trying really hard to hold out on upgrading from my G2.
But I know I want to because the technology is so much better. What do you guys think will go on Post-HTC One S?
The thing that I wonder about most about the Galaxy S3 is, it will have the new quad-core Exynos chip. But this chip is based on ARM A9 on a 32nm process - our Snapdragon S4 Krait is based on ARM A15 @ 28nm. I'm going to wait for benchmarks, but I don't think that chip is going to blow away our One S at all.
Plus, if it is anything like every previous Samsung, it will be a cheap, crappy plastic build quality. Everyone who holds my One S is amazed at the slimness, weight and elegance of this phone. I'm glad that I didn't wait for Samsung.
Agreed i love my new htc one s

Agree. Last two phones have been Tmo-sgs and sgs2...plastic builds..decent phones...horrible support. Dev community was great on sgs but people not devs were unbearable on sgs2. After getting the One S its heaps better than both in build and UI. Very satisfies with phone.

The Exynos quad core destroys everything. Haven't you seen the benchmarks? Smokes the Krait and the Tegra 3.
It probably won't come to the US though, because it will probably lack LTE capabilities.
Yeah I don't believe it will be getting the quad core processor, I have read about that.
I guess I am stuck. I am due for upgrade. I have mobile freedom for once in my life... but I am very cautious to upgrade to the HTC One S with the SGS3 around the corner and talks of the Galaxy Note coming to TMobile also.
I think I would really enjoy the Note. Tablet + phone = awesome.
I will wait it out and see, but I don't think anything will be destroying the HTC One S processing power anytime soon unless you buy a universal phone for some reason. Even then, who needs 4 cores?!

i had the atet and international notes. atet note sucked, tmobile note will probably be identical. international was much better with the exynos and all the development. I liked the intl note alot but decided to trade it for the One S. its up to you but I would not get the tmobile note unless it has the exynos, which it probably will not.

I would more suggest choose phone or tablet... Phone + tablet = horrably big phone or to small tablet!
I don't think quad cores are anything to sing praises about in smartphones just yet, not until there's more to actually take advantage of them. Look at the One S vs One X, for example. Regardless of the resolution difference (which obviously has an impact), the One S certainly packs a punch against it with it's dual core.

The GS3 won't be announced till next week. After that, there will probably be an international launch, then an exclusitivity here in the states by AT&T, anywhere from 30-90 days. What this means is that even if T-Mobile picks up the phone, it won't be till Q4.

Mid to High Range Phone

I got around $500 bucks to spend.... and in my price range I have 2 options.
Galaxy S2 or the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm not sure which, all i know is my wife who has the Galaxy S2 has a lot of trouble with games, and the Nexus has a powerVR in, slower but more compatible.
S2 or Galaxy Nexus? (i'm not fussed about the 5mp camera on the nexus)
Which is more hackable of the 2 i guess lol or maybe i should wait for the Quad Core Beast from Samsung to drive the prices down a bit more...
If you are willing to get a used phone you have alot more options than just those two phones you mentioned. Look in the marketplace

Depends which S2 your wife has. If she has the T-Mobile one or the AT&T Skyrocket, there's your problem. Those have Snapdragons in them, which suck for gaming. They're not real Galaxy S II's. They're only branded that way to make people buy them. Only the Sprint Epic 4G Touch and the AT&T i777 (Galaxy S II) have the original Exynos chip with the Mali GPU (the one in the real GSII i9100).
If you want a high res display with no microSD slot (16/32GB for GSM/CDMA models respectively) and pure mod-ability, get the Galaxy Nexus. It's pretty good for gaming, but it probably won't handle the next generation of games as well as the GS2. The Galaxy S II has a better GPU and processor, but a lower res screen (which actually means better performance), and 16GB + MicroSD card slot, and a camera that rivals the iPhone 4S's.
They both have great development communities, and all GSII variants are getting ICS officially. (the i9100 already has it). If you want a phone that will 100% get Jelly Bean officially, go for the GNexus.
Gaming/Media-oriented -> Galaxy S II
Pure mod-ability -> Galaxy Nexus
A Galaxy Nexus from Expansys I think is $399, no tax. I know the Google Play store is selling it for the same price, but with tax here in NY that's $450. You should be able to pick up either phone for around $400.

You can consider also HTC Sentation XL
try out galaxy nexus.
Although the Galaxy Nexus would be the usual choice, I honestly suggest that you check both phones' Specs carefully.
While Nexus's display is quite nice and it is "more famous" than the S2, in terms of processor or camera, there's no reason not to choose the latter.
Also, you should consider the release of ICS and CM9 for the S2.
One things I'll chime in from my personal experience against the "pure modability" aka Nexus- the best experience I've had with my S2 was on the old, stock ATT rom with the clockwork mod recovery in the stock kernel. All the custom roms I've tried, above all, that the WORST battery life.
So while you'll be able to get more, useless modability out of a Nexus, S2 will work like a champ right out of the box without ANY issues.

Galaxy S III VS Galaxy Note?

Is there really any competition with these phones or does one blow away the other hands down?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
Well since we have no idea what the official specs of the SGS3 are we can't really say. All we have is rumors, but some of the thing we can be fairly certain about are the exynos quad processor, a 720p screen, an 8-10MP camera, and a screen size ranging from 4.5-4.8". The main difference will be the processor and the screen size. If you want a hybrid phone/tablet the note will be best, if you are looking for pure performance then the S3 will give you the best results. You can't say one will blow the other one out of the water without solid spec sheets and an idea of what you want in the phone.
I am excited for Thursday. I hope that we don't only hear about the SGS3, but maybe some intel on when the TMobile version of the Note will be released.
I am going for the Note. Buying an international version is not an option for me financially, so it rules out these quad-core processors, which are probably not needed right now anyway.
I am still using a TMobile G2, and it does everything I need it to do. It only has 1 core I am sure at like 800 mhz, though I am overclocking it right now due to the fact that it makes it easier to run. Either way, that processor can't be as nice a the Galaxy Note's dual-core 1.5 ghz processor.
Quad cores are just being used in desktop computers really, so it's no surprise that you shouldn't really NEED it for a phone. I don't know the official technicalities to backup my statement, but it seems common sense.
I will look forward to having the GNote specific applications, S pen, and screen real estate. Can't wait!
S3. Only reason to get Note over GS2 is screen/pen. Not worth it imo.

Not a fair competition at all. S3 should be compared to phones of the same calibre, like the HTC One X.
im sure someone will do a competition of these two phones. Even whitout the S3 full specs we all know who will win.

i think the SG S3 will be the same as the Note ( pen included ) but with a 4.6 screen
Each have their pluses and minuses. The GS3 will have the latest and greatest hardware and ICS out if the box, but the Note will have the bigger screen and S-Pen.
But seriously you're considering a phone already 6 months old vs a phone that will just be announced tomorrow. I love my Note and it has worked flawlessly for me, but I know after tomorrow it won't be the best hardware wise compared to the GS3. But that doesn't mean the Note is a slouch at all. The good thing though is I have my work phone with Sprint and my upgrade is June 30, so I may pick up the GS3, so best of both worlds!

IiI can relate to the question I have a gsii and I really lobe the note. I will wait to deer what the new galaxy offers this weekend. I live near the brand new Samsung shop in Westfield next to the Olympic site and they reckon that the should have demo models this Saturday following the event tonight.
I only wish there were a gnote2 being announced. I love the idea of stylus
and big screen.
I have high expectations for GS3. Let's see what they have to offer for us today.
Anyway, I like my GS2 better than Galaxy Note already, so it seams clear to me that GS3 will also be better.
hummm, i like Galaxy S III better.
How do you like HUA WEI Ascend P1
BTW, I'm still waiting for media pad 10 fhd of HUA WEI
There will be quite a big difference according to the specs!
Well we will see at 7pm today
The SGS3 will be more popular than the Note, because the SGS3 is the direct concurrention of the HTC One X, iPhone etcetera.
If a phone gets really popular, you get extra things from the producer, like firmware upgrades etcetera.
Pick SGS3 after 7pm.
PS it is being expected the SGS3 will arive at the stores in approx 7 days
hahaha note vs a quadcore baby doesnt stand a chance find out today at 7:00pm GMT London time
according to leaked specs the s3 will have a 12mp camera a 4412 quadcore processor clocked at 1.5ghz
a mali 400(same as in the s2 just clocked much higher)
a 4.8 inch 720p HD regular RGB matrix not pentile
wireless charging (big maybe wuold be cool but unlikely)
2mp front cam
touchwiz bullcrap on android 4.0.4

I prefer the S3. I've heard its zippy, fast and overall better than the One X. The Note still remains a good choice, despite having a weaker processor, but it has a large screen, so its all a matter of preference.
Overall, if you're looking for a good experience, choose the international quad core version of the S3.
On a side note, I don't think AT&T will carry the quad core version of the S3, only the dual core Snapdragon S4 version. The quad core version is international, so you would have to buy it upfront. The upgrade you have would probably get you a USA dual core Galaxy S3.

unfortunately, it seems that SGS3 will be released in North America with a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. so I do not understand how it will be an improvement from SGS2...
may be I am missing some technical details and Snapdragon S4 is incredibly fast and powerful, but somehow I doubt that.
I kind of knew that they would not release quad-core S3 in NA. normally, all the good smartphones somehow manage to by-pass North American market.
for instance, it is a mystery to me why Samsung Omnia HD was never released in US or Canada.
As for the Galaxy Note, somehow I have doubts about its processing speed as almost all hardware specs are copied from SGS2. how come a phone with a screen almost twice the size of SGS2 and same hardware specs can operate just as smooth as SGS2 does?

Quad core doesn't mean it's faster or better. The quadcore exynos 4412 is a 32nm chooser with A9 cortex instructions. Dualcore S4 is 28nm A15 structure. A15 is a huge improvement over A9. Plus the sg3 in states has 2 gigs of ram. If you have enough patience wait for the next nexus
I don't think you can really tell the difference between these chipsets anymore. They're all too fast.

Here is my basic understanding of chipsets. Exynos quad> Qualcomm Krait = Tegra 3 = Exynos Dual Core 2.0 ghz > TI OMAP Dual core.
Now,exynos chipset doesn't support 4G LTE network (it maxes out at 21mbps) but qualcomm does ( the reason Sony uses them)
Samsung value their international market, where they are more popular comparatively. LTE isnt widespread outside USA so they dont see need in equiping their international sets with a feature people wont use. The solution then,is to give the few carriers with LTE an LTE version of the phone, relatively few units, and cost save.

One S Buying Advice.

Hey guys.
I have a due upgrade in Jan'2013 and i have shortlisted down to One S, Nexus 4 & SGS2 I9100 (Not the G Version).
So keeping Nexus 4 availability issues and defects aside, I compared SGS2 and One S, and One S was a clear winner in every area.
Now the problem is that I'm in India and most probably we have S3 units around here.
So is there any way I can recognize if the handset I'm buying is S3 or S4 equipped, by looking at the box before i buy it.
Looking at the dev thread, I can see lots of support for S4, but very little for S3. Also S4 >>> S3 in terms of performance.
So any way to identify a S4 without making the purchase (looking at the box), would be really helpful.
In short- How to identify if the device is S3 or S4 before i buy, i.e. without opening the box?
No gs3? Rather have that

If you would like to flash custom roms... then you shouldn't buy a Htc one s. There aren't a lot of developers around that support this phone.
If you are happy with stock android then buy the One S. It will get Jelly Bean (4.1.1) soon and it isn't as old as the SGS2.
Edit: To identifie wich processor is inside the phone look at the specs that are written:
- 1,5 GHz Dual-Core is Snapdragon S4
- Dual-Core is Snapdragon S3
They hid the frequency (1,7 GHz).

If, you can get the s4 version do it!
Good luck and have fun with your new phone xD
The box states the cpu clock. If its 1.5Ghz its an S4, if its 1.7Ghz its S3.
On my box it says the following(S4):
Model: Z520e (I guess the E is for europe)
CPU: 1.5Ghz, dualcore
... And then the rest of the specs with is irrelevant.
But what you want is the one with 1.5Ghz CPU, not the 1.7Ghz.

Will keep in mind when I make the purchase.
