Wi-fi everywhere. Do NOT want data plans. Questions:
1. Does just having a "smart phone" allow US carriers to make you pay for data?
2. What is the BEST (read cheapest) plans for 4 phones, no data, but unlimited texting?
I am sick sick sick of paying a min imum of $20 for each phone to have data when 2 of the phones are not even smart phones! the are for my 2 kids and T-Mobile is charging me $20 each for those dumb phones!!!
Please help!
Easy
You can easily have a smartphone and use it on any plan that will allow you to install a SIM card. Of course the phone will have to be either unlocked or used with the same company that it is locked with, just like any other phone. If you have no dataplan with your account you will no use any but can still connect with WIFI.
ya I know a few people who have smart phones with no internet plan, I think that they only really require it if you sign up for a new contract to get one.
Just make sure that you disable all internet abilities for your apps otherwise you will be getting a huge bill in the mail by going over lol

Hey I am a smartphone user and going off to college next year.. Currently on AT&T and in a family plan with my mom and dad. Our contract "expires" this July as its been two years. Unfortunately I have like one more year b/c my phone got stolen and I had to upgrade. My parents didn't.
Currently our family plan is around $110. ($30 unlimited data, no texting for anyone, cheapest voice plan)
Anyway, they use "dumbphones" and I was wondering, since they can leave AT&T in July.. Is there a way for them to use like MetroPCS and me to stay on AT&T and save some money? I know they have some unlimited voice plans (which is ALL they need)
$10 is not that worth it but if I can use AT&T and my parents use voice-only on another carrier for $20 that would definitely be worth it.
All my parents need is voice unlimited and decent coverage in the North new Jersey / new york area.. A sim-card service would also be ideal (idk if metropcs is, just an example!)
(I know this is a long post, but I have honestly done the research but just cannot find the answer.. I know some of you guys can though!)

Alright, if you guys can allow me to get data only and both my parents with unlimited voice for around $90, AWESOME!
However, if it still rounds out to like $100 or $110 (current plan), I might as well stay with AT&T..
If this is the case, what is the "best" dumbphone for AT&T? They don't need a keyboard, no data obviously, need at least 2 days of battery life, and a screen with some decent-sized type so they can see all the letters/numbers. Also would like to pay no more than $50 on eBay or other site.. Don't wanna waste an upgrade for a free phone if I can pay $50
optional: touchscreen. also optional but kinda important is some sort of expandable memory cuz they might listen to some music.
-- Sorry for LONG post but I think the questions are fairly simple if you guys know.. So thanks a lot in advance!!
Anyone have any info? PRetty easy questions if you know
Thankss
Anyone..?
please
Wouldn't their phones be locked to AT&T or are you planning on unlocking them for them?
So, I'm do for an upgrade, but the choices on the Verizon site stink. I'm supposed to get a "new every two" but that's a joke. Letstalk and WireFly both have a decent deal on either a Inc2 or a Thunderbolt, but...
I don't understand the upgrade process. Those sites both appear to want to change my plan. I do not want to change my plan! I have all the minutes and data I need. Both sites appear to be jacking me on my plan.
What's the best way to upgrade without changing plans?
buy a new phone out right, then use your existing plan on the new phone
else, they would try to force you to lose your current plan
I was afraid of that. I keep hearing about people getting decent phones for $0-$99, but there always seems to be a catch.
Man... hard as heck to find a decent phone...
How do I get a SIM card if I buy a used phone?
If it is say Verizon or Sprint, they don't distribute sim cards as they do not operate on gsm. If it's t-mo or att I think you just walk into a store and ask.
Probably because your on an out dated plan. Verizon used to have over 20 ? plans and slimmed it down. In most cases you wont spend more money on the plan. Just never activate a non smartphone if you already have unlimited data obviously

Verizon's LTE operates using SIM cards.

I think I got this figured out. The "deals" Verizon offered me to extend the contract were nuts. I found a lightly used Thunderbolt and got it at a good price. it is supposed to have a clean ESN and unused SIM card (wait and see).
I do have an older plan with unlimited data ($30) and the minute-package is $10 less than what they are now... no way I'm changing my plan.
So hopefully I'll be able to activate the 'Bolt and not change anything.

Sorry about that. I realized too late I posted in wrong place. My join date may be 2008, but I'm still a noob.
Anyone experienced this?
I was looking to upgrade my "Even More Minutes" Plan (that was started late 2010) to a higher tier version of the plan (needed extra minutes since I went dangerously close last time), but I learned that they actually completely discontinued non-contract Post-Pay plans. I got grandfathered in, but once I leave this plan, I can't go back. I CAN convert to a *contracted* Post-Pay plan, but nothing along the lines of what I have now.
I verified with a guy I've made good relations with at the local T-Mobile store and a customer representative on the phone that this was the case.
Has anyone recently had luck going to a post-pay plan or did T-Mobile eliminate them all? Granted, the contracted post-pay plan that they're offering offers unlimited minutes (though the data is tiered and is actually less than what I have now), I still find it kinda crappy that they're no longer offering flexible options for different types of customers.

Hi all, this is my first post here. I'm relatively tech-savvy but mobile development isn't my forte. Anyway, I've tried many search strings on the site but I haven't found a directly relevant answer.
Essentially the issue is I have a grandfathered service plan from approximately 2004 where I'm getting data for $5/month. I was using a lame HTC Touch Pro until it shattered. Unfortunately, to purchase a new smartphone (figuratively anything that isn't a flip phone), I would need to enter into a new contract on their exponentially more expensive terms. Additionally, I'm going to get nailed with all kinds of new bull**** fees (a 4G fee when it has barely been developed in NYC). Obviously I'm hoping for a more cost-effective approach.
Furthermore, I saw someone briefly mention in another thread that the OP could just buy a phone outright. I'm wondering if purchasing a phone unlocked and then somehow activating it on Sprint's network or some other hack would be possible. Price is a significant constraint; it's not feasible for me to drop $750 on an unlocked smartphone, so it's preferable if I can find some kind of workaround that's subsidized.
Thanks for reading through this, hope you can lend some advice on the optimal solution.
Sprint won't accept unlocked phones. I don't think there is a such thing as a unlocked cdma phone.

Ok, so early today i was working and my brand new S3 was swiped off the front desk while i was taking a call during my night audit, before you ask why it was on the front desk, im an on-site specialist and manager of sales for Hilton Hotels in my area, and before i even get to look at the security tape i wont be sure if that person has already checked out or not since i have to talk to the hotel owner about viewing the security camera hard drive. So a few questions about it since this is the first time i had to do a phone claim since i always need my phone by me for work.
1. How should i go about claiming this?
2. Will it cost anything, i pay for the extra money on my bill for the insurance plan?
3. How does the process usually work?
4. And finally can i go to a local AT&T store and claim it or atleast get a new SIM card to use in a old phone i have?
