I've been looking at getting my dad a Kindle for his birthday. However, Google just announced the Nexus 7 which has the Kindle app in the Play Store and also has the Play Store Books and Magazines etc.
They're both around a similar price range, however the battery for the Kindle obviously is much greater than that of the Nexus 7. I don't know if he would use the extra functionality of a 7, he might use it for watching films when he travels on the plane etc though. He's never used Android before (he has some Nokia phone)
His birthday is on the 25th July. Thoughts?
no question, the nexus7.
the whole hardware is better, for the same price.
one mainpoint is the screen.
as much as i know it's a IPS display, with awsome viewing angles and colours.
the resolution is better too, this results in a better pixel density, so the fonts are much clearer than on the kindle. it supports full multitouch, not like the kindle fire.
another main point is that it is a real google product. means the Nexus7 will always be on the latest Android version. the kindle will never enjoy that support
and i don't think you have to worry about batterylife. some say it lasts 9h with screen on: who reads a book for 9h? who watches 3-5 films in a row on a tablet?
i think for the price, the Nexus7 is a much better product wich can even be compared to high priced tablets
The nexus of course!
Big time, nexus. you can do all the things you would do on a kindle and more. My favorite newest aosp support.http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/good.gif
Nexus, just because its a nexus. you get good support and fast updates. Kindle still has to add all their amazon crap before even releasing an update.
My suggestion would be Nexus 7, obviously. Price range is same not similar. Both are available for $199. Nexus 7 offer far more than what kindle fire does. Here you can compare nexus 7 and kindle fire. http://bit.ly/N2xHdZ

Definitly Nexus 7.
New hardware, android 4.1 full support for the same price.
Just wait, I'm waiting too
Nexus or Kindle
+1 for Nexus 7, with JB :good:
Ask him if he wants a device for only reading or if he'd like to watch movies and listen to music also. The N7 is obviously a nice device but i think the kindle is superior as a pure reader. If it's a surprise and you don't want to ask him go with the N7 since it does everything.

That's a silly question... The Kindle Fire got nothing on the Nexus 7.

I believe the release date is mid July for the UK too, so yes you should get it, just put in your pre order asap and choose the fastest shipping method.
If it doesn't come on time i'd print out a life size pic of the N7, cut it out and put it in a nice box with a card etc and give it to your dad and explain that you got the latest, greatest tablet for him but it'll take a little more time to be delivered. :good:

hey all, im looking to buy a tablet for my kids (ages 9 & 11) and want your suggestions. i want to keep it under $150 and have been looking at a couple that have caught my eye, but want to know if anyone of you have experience with them. they wanted the nintendo DS originally, but since i have a tablet and they fell in love with it, i figure id go the tablet route for them too. also, at this price i'd be buying one for each of them.
here they are:
1) Sylvania 10" Touch Screen Magni Tablet - SYTAB10ST

Nook color, you can used ones on eBay that look brandnew for $110 or buy a new one for around $120-$130. The Nook color has a lot of support here, with cm7 stable and ics nightly. The Nook color is unbrickable, so for kids if they are getting into android modding then this would be great

the nook color does look good and i see there are manufacturer refurbished ones for sale too. that might be the route to go....thanks.

Just my opinion.
I would buy a Galaxy Tab or iPad. I know it's for kids but this way you can also enjoy it. I'm not a big fan of cheap devices, because they mostly are allot worse.
goood tablet
I think ipad could be the most benefit

i have an asus transformer already for myself (will likely go with one of the newer models from asus later in the year, can u say black friday). im trying to actually get them from using mine, lol. i would go with something more expensive, but maybe later down the line depending on how they do with the lesser expensive one. i have 2 other younger kids that these could be passed down to if i decide to upgrade the older kids in a year or so.
Kindle
No one suggested a Kindle Fire, I think they are good and you can get a "refurbished" one too, I just got an email from Amazon having them on sale for $120...

I would seriously go for a kindle as well if i could find them refurbished at that price, but i can't find them and don't see that email (I'm an Amazon Prime customer too). can you provide a link?
I would reccomend the kindle fire over nookcolor but I didn't no that they were that inexpensive the kindle fire is better then nookcolor

awesome helpers! not one person commented on the five devices the OP was asking about! lol
I've gotta say, be wary buying off-branded tabs.
And with that, I'm going to recommend the Kindle Fire as well. Root in and install a CM rom and it will be just as good as a higher end tablet

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a Note 10.1. I currently have a Note 2 and I love it but I'm starting to think the screen size isn't enough for me anymore.
Is there any news about an upcoming 2013 version of the 10.1? I just dont want to buy one if the new version is coming in a couple of months. TIA.
Next month marks the one year since release of this tablet. I'm pretty sure an update is around the corner but haven't heard anything official. With that said if you can get a good price on it I've seen it on sale for like 350 I think it's still worth it.

rumor i heard was 8 core with a 12" screen. if true i don't think i'd be able to fight the urge to get one! i love my windows tablets, but windows just isn't very touch friendly and i can't stand metro (none of the apps i use are modern ui based so that's the biggest reason for not being touch friendly).
amazon has some refurbs for $300. i'm trying to stay away b/c i really don't need the temptation. dad's birthday, parent's anniversary, daughter's bday are all coming up in a few weeks.
First off, I love my Note 10.1. I bought it 2 days after release and still think it's the best tablet out there. However, the 2560x1600 HD display, and extra screen real estate are SO tempting. Unfortunately, I can't justify another tablet. A nice telescope is actually higher priority right now.

If you can wait, it may not be too long till the new one releases. Also, the price of the 10.1 might drop when the 12.2 comes out.

I think I'll wait a little longer to see whats coming. The new Nexus 7 looks good and I'm sure the Nexus 10 will be even better but I cant have a tablet without an S-pen anymore.
What do you think about the Ativ Q?

The only tablet I'd even consider is the Shield Tablet. I've gone through too many tablets. Tried to justify each one, and I just found myself never using them.

I'll bite in this one so long as there is an LTE version. I have a 2013 Nexus 7 LTE and had a 2012 before that. If there is a Nexus 9 with Lte on Verizon I will edge up my current tablet line and get it. I always wanted a Nexus device with a little more screen real Estate. 9 inches is perfect and made by HTC with front facing speakers. What could go wrong? Fingers crossed for an Lte version, and not six months after its release as Verizon has been wont to do what Nexus tablets.
This guy. I will be grabbing it

I have the Nexus 7 2013, and while I wouldn't mind a slightly larger screen...I just don't see myself getting it any time soon. It looks like a great laptop, but I use my tablet almost exclusively for reading now. And for watching downloaded movies/TV shows while travelling, which isn't often. I just can't justify the price for what I use it for, when my N7 still works great. I need to learn how to lie to myself better.
My Acer Iconia A200 is on its last legs, the battery is dieing on it so I am seriously tempted by this tablet, plus with the keyboard folio it makes it that much sweeter, my one gripe is the lack of SD card support.
Anyone know if this will support full size USB via dongle or MHL hdmi output?
I still have the note 8.0 which runs like its brand new, tbh, I hardly even use it. If anything, I would want a refreshed nexus 7 or and 8 inch.... I do have my eye on the nvidia shield tablet though..

Yeah I saw that earlier as well over at the verge. I wonder if Google is planning on releasing a new model of the Nexus Player now, with Android N out of the box?
Does anyone know where you can still buy one of these? Besides eBay of course. I called and went to several targets and walmarts in my area, but I had no luck in finding at least one =\
I want to buy two preferably

What is with Google anyways? They release good products and apps and then discontinue them on a pretty consistent basis. Looking forward the Mibox and google's future discontinued 5 new texting apps....
It didn't sell well at all. Google came very, very late to the market with this. Shame because it works extremely well.

True, but I believe that's only because Google didn't advertise the NP very well, or at all for that matter. If Google advertised the NP the same way Amazon does for their fire stick and fire TV box, the NP would've outsold Amazon's device easily by a landslide. It's a better device all around

Also true, but I don't think Google promotes any of their Nexus devices, phones, tablets, whatever. I ask a non-technical person in my family on phone brands, they might know iPhone, Galaxy, and the model they use themselves. Nexus? Nope.
When the NP launched in Australia last year I went to JB HiFi and asked for one. Even the computer crew didn't know what it was. They went out back to dig through the stock and came back out with it. The girls at the counter looked at it and said "I have no idea what this is, is it like Apple TV?".
Yes, b*atch, yes it is.
---------- Post added at 07:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:32 PM ----------
I reckon the NP would do okay if google simply continued at a better RRP. Something like $69, double the Chromecast, but much less than an Apple TV or Roku.
I would be surprised to see another Nexus Player. I honestly think the Mi Box will be its replacement within the same price range. At least Xiaomi has been great at keeping its current Mi Box's up to date with this being like it's third or forth hardware configuration.
Well that really sucks and I hope they just pulled it because they are planning a refresh. I've used Roku and Fire TV and my Nexus Player has been by far my favorite streaming device and it works extremely well. Also, I find it kind of funny how they pulled the Nexus Player from their store and now it shows the Nvidia Shield instead.

Would you still recommend them?
My daughter would like a tablet for Christmas. She used to have my old LePan II tablet that I rooted but the charge port quit a few months ago. Screen was cracked and it was well used. She is a fairly techy girl as she has an iPhone 6SE and a Chromebook (school issued). Was thinking the new Amazon tablet that's out since it's cheap but I think it defaults to 8GB which isn't much once you look at all the crap Amazon puts on them. Any recommendations? I'd be fine flashing a CM or some other ROM on whatever I purchase and using a very small GAPPS package as to maximize space for apps if needed.
Another option is I have a Nexus 7 2013 (flo) that I have running the latest Nougat CM with I could give her if there was something out there relatively cheap I could get for myself. Or maybe just another Nexus 7 for her would be a good route? I bet I can find them for <$150 in 16GB....
Recommendations/thoughts?
My honest thoughts would be that any tablet would suffice. Preferably an older one. I know it sounds odd but hear me out.
You say that she is a techy kind of girl. If so, I feel that the ultimate kind of gift would be working together on rooting, installing a recovery, and tweaking a ROM. Perfecting something is my favorite part of Android.
An old tablet would allow for an improvement to be seen. You could guide her through the steps and teach her something new.
Although an expensive fast tablet is nice to have, in my opinion experience is even more valuable, especially bonding time with your dad.
thanks for sharing
I would suggest you to take a look at Linus tech tips youtube channel. His children grow in a huge pool of gadgets which includes a lots of educational gadgets too.
Don't some of the amazon tablets have SD cards? If so then the 8 gbs won't be that much of an issue. The amazon tablets are so much more durable than other tablets I've had. I know my amazon fire 7" (non hd) version has a microsd slot and it can take quite a beating. It's still on sale on amazon right now too for cyber monday.
Thanks for the suggestions! I almost pulled the trigger on an Amazon tablet Fire HD 8 but from what I read they may have started blocking google play so the backdoor installation works but it crashes a lot. So I found a Nexus 9 16gb on ebay for $204 that I will keep for myself and will give my Nexus 7 2nd Gen to my daughter. It's already rooted with Nougat.
