[Q] Broken Galaxy Note after rooting and attempting rom install - General Questions and Answers

I successfully rooted my Galaxy Note. When I attempted to install Cyanogenmod 9 I followed the instructions and deleted factory setting in restore mode and also deleted the cache. Next I was supposed to install the rom but now my phone doesn't recognize the memory card anymore. Both the backup I took using clockwork and the cyanogen rom are one the SD card. What to do? I would be very greatful if anyone could shed some light on this issue and help get my phone back up and running.
Kind regards,
Stig

I guess you have misread.. You are not supposed to do factory reset.. However.. Solution is,
Go to recovery mode..
In that go to storage and mount.. Then mount sd card..
Connect your phone to PC using USB cable..
Copy ics ROM file to it..
Now go to install from sd card and select the ROM..
Once installed wipe cache, and dalvik cache..
Reboot, it'll be fine..

Thank you so much for getting back to me. By the time I read your post I had downloaded Odin 1.85 and flashed Abyssnoteker kernel. That provided with me with access to clockwork recovery. However, although I now can find my backupfile that I stored before I attempted to install the rom, it does not appear to be working. When I attempt to run the backup file I'm given an error message stating that there is an "MD5mismatch!". I then proceeded to attemt to run Cyanogenmod 9 again and it uses about a minute to install and tells me that install from SD card is complete. I rebooted and everything appeared to be going fine but it's stuck in looping. Any advice on how to proceed?
Kind regards,
Stig

what version is your Galaxy Note? The AT&T version or international version?
Currently the international version is suffering from a brick bug that could brick your phone when you wipe.

Thanks for your reply. I have the international version (GT-N7000).

Are you "on" CM9 right now? If you are then, use Odin to flash a GingerBread ROM with a wipe.
Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Scroll down to post #4 and flash via Odin one of the Open Europe ROM Gingerbread ROMs. The ROMs comes with wipe so it will effectively reset your phone. Unfortunately that ROM will not be easily rootable, so go back up to post #1 and flash via Odin one of the directly rootable ROMs. Then root and install CWM etc.
I know this is tedious, but try it out and see if it works.

Fix Vibrant 4G Clockword recovery Mod and use ROM Manager for Backup and ROM Flashing

I am modifying this post removing some steps:
Note that you can always go back to orignal Odin ROM using Vibrant Download Mode in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836
You should know what you are doing, otherwise I am not reponsible for any device brick.
1- Use SuperOneClick 1.7 to gain root (USB debugging enabled).
Open SuperOneClick and run Shell Root with your phone plugged in.
Use Rage option, then once done, reboot the phone and verify root using "Root Checker" from the Market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
2. Download "3e_recovery_installer.zip" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
run the 3e Recovery Installer. When finished, close.
3. Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery via ROM Manager from market by selecting "Vibrant" when asked for phone type. Then reboot into recovery. (You may need to reboot your phone if you get stuck on the ROM Manager "Reboot to Recovery" screen) (Just reboot, then attempt to reboot into recovery again)
At the blue recovery select "reinstall packages". The first time will fail, run it once more, and you should now have the green CWM Recovery menu.
4. Install Kernel Flasher from the Market and backup the kernel.
5. use Rom Manager to flash Data and Dalvik init.d-busybox with data to SD update.zip to fix Data and Dalvik init.d-busybox from below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744655
6- When finshed you should be able to backup and restore the ROM using Rom Mananger.

I guess I'm the first casualty of this. I did everything to the letter in the post up to step five. Once i flashed 4g_sd-fix_New in rom manager it the phone rebooted and did the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. It no factory reset my phone and neither the sd card nor the internal storage mount.
Any help would be appreciated here.

Is anyone able to get data back?
I tried using Odin to flash to stock and I'm still unable to get data connection unless I connect to Wifi.
I sure hope you modified the SD Fix.....
That fix was created by Eugene and I to fix mounting for the Vibrant. If flashed to a 4G, it'll break.
I wouldn't recommend this method at all, this looks risky. Just wait for krylon or koush to come out with a proper release of cwm. I have offered to lend my phone to either of them and im sure as soon as either one has the time they will get it going.
I don't like doing things half ass, and while the work is appreciated i wouldn't recommend this guide to the average user as i lost my first 4g to a similar guide.

I tried all the steps till 5 and get the data not being able to connect and then after I Odin back to stock and I'm unable to do step 6.
Krylon can you load up the 2 ROM's you have available for us to try if we can get this damn thing to work?

Yes, Step 5 was created by us to allow both Internal and External SD to auto mount to the phone and PC on the VIBRANT.
We had to modify the stock 4G files to allow this due to the 4G only having a external SD.
For now, I'm reporting this thread due to it being just like the last "CWM for Vibrant works on the 4G" thread which caused bricks, which resulted in me having to create the ODIN image for everyone.
Please do not jump the gun. Be patient.

G2X can't load custom roms, freezes at flash screen

No matter what custom rom I try to load on my G2X, it will go through, install the rom, and then when it reboots past the LG screen, it gets to whatever custom boot screen in on the rom, and just locks up. The only way I can get it to boot after that point is to NVFlash back to stock.
Tried searching through this site and google, but can't find a solution.
You need to say what the process is that you attempted to do. Wipes and what not.

Rooted phone, added Clockwork, booted into CW recovery, did data and cache wipes, installed CM7 from SD card, rebooted, phone froze at custom boot screen. Reboot, still frozen. Would not boot at all.
Used NVFlash to reinstall stock image on phone, rooted phone, CW recovery, data and cache wipes, installed a different rom for my phone model, same result. Back to stock using same process, tried a third rom using same process, same result, frozen phone that won't go beyond boot screen.
Using this same process on my old T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant, it worked perfectly on several different roms.
It sounds like you may have a ROM for a different model phone. Can you send a link to the ROM that you downloaded for us to see?
Also, is your phone a T-Mobile G2x or an LG Optimus 2x (O2x).

It is a T-mobile G2X, LG-P999DW.
The CM7 link was straight from the CM7 site, it wasn't an experimental mod or anything, it was the stable one listed under the G2X.

Considering cm roms are supposed to wipe system prior to flash, I couldn't imagine what is going on. Try wiping system just in case and after that, try installing from internal as well. Other options would be download other ways, like on PC or from phone transfer the files differently. Other then that can't really help you.

The last time I pulled it directly on my phone, the other times I downloaded via my PC and then copied the file. Had been via external so I tried internal that last time too. I'm close to madness, but I'm also too stubborn to give up.
I was thinking maybe I need to replace the kernel, but I'm not sure whether that's the problem or which Kernel to try if I did need to.
I had a similar issue on a tablet of mine. What version of CWM are you using? Are you using the touch version? The touch version has had some boot problems. Did you try partition the SDCard in the advanced settings? I forget which I used on my phone. Has anyone else partitioned theirs?
Well, not knowing which peice is broken let me just recap my process for you and see how it works:
1. Use OneClick NVFlash from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 and select Flash CWM 5.0.2.0
2. Boot to CWM
3. format cache
4. format data
5. format system
6. format Dalvik cache
7. flash ROM from external/internal memory
8. flash kernel (optional, not required unless doing kernel testing)
9. flash gapps-package
10. fix permissions
11. reboot
I have not had this process screw up once for me so far. If this process does not work for you then you leave me really be scratching my skull...

R u try flash to HC ?
** If u flashed and found a boot-loop after flash HC, please follow up latest post.
Halp!
Good timing, i have a similar problem.
I was at ICS 4.0.4 rooted then decided to downgrade to HC stock to back it up (since ICS is buggy).. I flashed using odin 3v1.85 using a single file PDA: P6200DXKL3_P6200OLBKK8_P6200DXKK5_HOME.tar.md5. After flashing HC, I'm stuck at bootloop.
Then I have no choice than to flash it up from there, since I can still access recovery 3e.. Firstly i flashed CWM 6 using odin, then tried to update CM10 from my external sdcard. Then this error shows up
Installing: /emmccm-10-20120904-UNOFFICIAL-p6200.zip
Finding update package...
E: unknown volume for path [/emmccm-10-20120904-UNOFFICIAL-p6200.zip
E: Can/t mount /emmccm-10-20120904-UNOFFICIAL-p6200.zip
installation aborted.
BTW I wiped data and cache using CWM. I accidentally formatted the sdcard my real objective is to mount it then I didnt notice.
oyea, tried flashing it using touch cwm, it worked but it boot loops..then i tried acessing recovery but it just went off, and i cant turn it on.
Good thing when i charge it on an outlet the screen goes on then i went to Downloadmode again. I reflashed it back to HC via odin.
NOTE: ( MY tab is ruinned. now the screen won't turn on, only when I'm charging it as previously stated. The only thing i can access is download mode
Thanks in advance :crying: I'm at lost
I have a experiences like this. I try entered to download mode and re-flash my tab to HC with Odin then reboot a device and wipe all user data.
Finally, I'm on CM10. :victory:
Flashing back to ICS fixed the bootloop, then from there it's history!
Though I forgot to copy the cwm backup of my ICS before formatting the sdcard. Now it's gone :silly: . Anyway, it's nice to start off from scratch.
Can someone tell me how to go back to stock HC/ICS from ICS from CM10 without the nandroid backup? Just in case some problems will occur in the future. Thanks!

Onething that I'd like to share is you should flash a cusstom rom wwhen you're on Android 3.2. Some friends of mine used the stock Android 4.0 then flashed CM10 or Paranoid and their devices bricked.
although very beautiful and fluid is still immature has many bugs that I at least I consider fundamental for me ... for example, does not read the external sd ... not the video player does not read the pen drive .... well you would for hands just a phone and not a very large smartphone / tablet sfuttare in full ... I have uninstalled immediately expect a more complete version ... more well known problems and then decide to suit your needs if you install it or not. hello ..

From ICS to CM10

HI,
Anyone can tell me the steps to move from ICS 4.0.4 to CM10.
I'm asking cause i want to be sure that i'm not going to brick my device.
This is my second p6200, the other one got hardbrik.
I've allready ICS rooted and CWM 6.0.1.0.
thanks in advance
Well, I can tell you the steps I followed on my GT-P6210. It's possible that your mileage may vary.
All the download links are in the OP of aorth's CM10 thread. Make sure you get the right version for your device.
Copy the CM10 zip and the Google Apps zip to your external mSD card.
Boot into CWM Recovery and make a backup. Note that "internal card" and "external card" are reversed in this version of recovery.
Install CM10 from zip.
Install Gapps from zip.
Reboot
At this point I got stuck in a bootloop. I almost panicked until I realized I could still power down and boot into recovery. Therefore, at the very worst I could restore my nandroid backup.
So having tried the most conservative method (no resetting) and failed, I then proceeded to do the following:
Power down by holding power button for a few seconds.
Boot into recovery.
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe cache.
Advanced/wipe Dalvik cache.
Install CM10 zip again (probably not necessary).
Install Gapps zip again (probably not necessary).
Reboot.
I know some folks have reported bricking their devices by doing a factory reset, but I don't believe there's a clear report of having done so using this version of CWM Recovery. The consensus seems to be that it's safe. No guarantees from me. Just reporting my experience.
Thanks for share your experience. At this time i want to be sure of everything cause i dont want to brick this second p6200 too xD

AFAIK it would be safe to try just the first 5 steps. Some folks have said in the CM10 thread that they did not have to factory reset, so it could work for you. If not (if you get the bootloop, as I did), then you can still safely restore your backup in CWM recovery and be right back where you started.
Thanks for the usefull info. I did the first 5 steps an got a bootloop. so i did what you said next (wipe data/dalvic/chache) re-install cm10 em gaaps.... at the end .. everything is fine :good:

Great! Glad to hear it. Now you'll have no trouble installing newer CM10 updates without having to reset again.

Help flashing custom Rom

I would like to install either the stable cm 10, or the nightly 10.1, but I haven't decided yet. However I always seem to mess it up. I downloaded cm 10 earlier on my phone, and saved to the sd card. I created a nandroid backup, then unlocked my bootloader with ez unlock. I booted into recovery, and selected to install update from sd card and picked the cm10 file. I believe it said the file couldn't be opened? Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? ALSO, do I need to factory reset and wipe cache before i do this? well I lose my data, if so and how can i get it back after i flash?
Thanks
You have a Verizon gs3 right?
If yes, give this a read. Section 3 is where it tells you how to flash a rom. Don't download any of the links, you already have the rom on your sd card.
This will give you the steps needed to flash a rom. Also, make sure you have all the zips needed to flash the rom from the OP in the thread where you got the rom.
Just make sure you are rooted and your bootloader is unlocked.

OK buddy, let me try and help. You can use either twrp recovery or cwm recovery. If you don't have one of those then start there.
After you have a custom recovery, make sure you have the ROM and gapps on your SD card (internal SD). Boot to recovery and wipe cache, dalvik cache and factory reset data wipe. Then install ROM by going to install from SD, choose file from SD, not the update zip.
The data you will lose is mostly app data, call logs, text logs etc. No pics or music.
If you have anymore questions feel free to ask but I really suggest reading some more.
