Completely incomparable. Different beasts.
First, go down to your local retailer and decide if you want a 7" or 10" tablet, then come back and ask about comparisons.
I've used both 10.1" tablets and 7"/7.7" tablets, and let me say: the experience is very different. 10.1" tablets are much more expansive, allow for many more widgets on the home screens, run ALL apps with their full tablet interfaces, and generally are more productive. That said, 10.1" tablets are also larger, heavier, less portable, and thus not as nice for things like ebook reading.
So, it comes down to how you'll use your tablet. Will you want to carry it around with you everywhere and use it for longer periods of time (where you have to actually hold it in your hands, vs. propping it in your lap)? Then maybe a 7" is right for you. Do you mainly use it in a few places and want to be able to show as much information on-screen as possible? Then maybe a 10.1" tablet is for you.
Both will run (most) tablet apps, and provide a good experience. Which is right depends ENTIRELY on how you'll be using it. So, there's no automatic answer for anyone--you need to think long and hard about what you want a tablet to do.
Or, if you're wealthy enough, just buy one of both.

Just ordered a Nexus 7. Funny, but it's much easier to spend $250 on impulse than it is $500. There's a lesson there, I think.
Lack of sdcard on the Nexus 7 is a killer, I'll probably lean towards the 700 down the road.

exactly. seems to be the norm now with Google devices. No sd slot on the galaxy nexus, and now this. They prefer people to rely on the cloud. and lets not forget what xoom owners went thru with their sd slot.

The galaxy line is exclusively from samsung. It's called Nexus 7.
I already ordered one. I think for gaming the best experience I've ever had is on a 7 inch tablet. Much easier to hold and plus tegra3 games, and I would go with the nexus 7

Yes better with microSd but you can have some capacity with Usb host.

I tend to agree. With good enough performance, a smaller tablet seems better for gaming than a larger tablet. I've been checking out the Toshiba Excite 7.7, which is Tegra 3, 1280X800, and 7.7", so very close to the Nexus 7, and I'd rather game on it than any 10.1' tablet I've tried. Just lots more comfortable.
The Excite 7.7 is way too expensive at $500, and has some screen issues. So, I'll be giving the Nexus 7 a try. If the screen has decent white balance and temperature, along with the good brightness and such everyone's been talking about, I think it'll make for a great gaming and ebook reading experience.
Even if it does run a phone-like UI... :laugh:

An interesting article: Google's Patrick Brady tells us how the Nexus 7 went from 'start to finish in four months'
So what's next? Brady repeatedly referred to the 7 as the "first device" in the Nexus tablet range, saying "we're always iterating on Nexus devices." That presumably means more are to come, but the important bit here isn't so much that Google's just out building cool tablets on a whim. Rather, they're building reference devices where they see a need.

Transformer Pad TF700T ,, if money isn't an issue
One thing I have been thinking is that almost always after a Nexus Device has been released the manufacturer release an own branded, but slightly better version for a bit more wedge. (Desire, S2, S3).
I suspect in the not to distant future an Asus 7" tablet that is basically the NX7 but with micro sd and MHL will probably come out for about another 50 quid.
That said if someone from the scene came out and said that USB OTG was definitely working properly on the NX7 i'd buy one tomorrow.

I dont recall a smoother androix device than galaxy nexus with jelly bean, sorry but GS2 and GS3 are not as smooth and as far as 7" inch tablet Asus will most likely release a high end model

If $200 is your max budget for a tablet then I don't think it gets any better than the Nexus 7...

Nexus 10 would be sooo much better than a 7" IMO. I'm really wanting to buy a tab right now, but just haven't decided yet because I really want a Nexus tablet but want a bigger screen than that!
I would like a 10", yes please However, they have to do it right. Compared to a 7", a 10" is, to me at least, more about media consumption. And I know google wants us to use the play store to get our entertainment, in my country there is no play store except for games. Plus a 10" I would use a lot more to watch films on trips, holidays, etc on which I do not have a WiFi connection.
A SD card (whatever size) is compulsory (or at least a USB port to connect a cardreader).
They can skip the back camera, haven't used mine on my prime.
10 inch tablets do nothing for me. They aren't portable and are terrible for reading on. The 7in is the perfect size for me. I sold my iPad because I just never used it (it was too big to travel with and terrible for reading books).

The "Nexus 10" will be probably unveiled with the next Nexus Phone at the end of the year. The "rumors" a few months ago were 5 Nexus devices. We have the Nexus 7 and the Q, then this Nexus 10 and the Phone. Looking forward to what that last Nexus device will be.
A Nexus 10 I would expect to have the features and price tag to go up against the iPad and Surface.
The Nexus 7 has the features and price tag to go up against the Fire and the other Android tablets of that size.
So they're really two entirely separate market segments to chase.
(and I'm deliberating leaving the Playbook out of the conversation until we see what RIM can do with BB10 and a revamped design)

Hmm.
Phone, 7, 10, Q and TV?
Though really they should integrate the Q with a TV product, since I can't for the life of me place a use for it since it doesn't actually stream/store any local content. It basically has all the guts of a Smart TV, plus an amplifier minus the screen. If they'd turned it into a proper media server, then it'd make sense at that price.
I'm thinking that Google might try and hit a 'soft spot' on $299.99 value. Or at least go around there. I think that it'd be reasonable for a 10" tablet for $299.99 compared to current prices (~$395 for a Transformer 300)
The 7 will fit my needs wants better, I already have a almost 5" phone and a 10" tablet. I'm thinking the 7 will be easier to take out of the house than the 10" tablet.

There's a audience for 7" and 10".... is there a bigger audience for 7"? Yeah absolutely. Simply because it is a competitor against the Kindle and Nook, and its more "realistic" (to a certain extent) when it comes to reading magazines, books.
But there needs to be a Nexus tablet with proper TABLET UI as well as a flagship device for developers to 'test tablet apps' on.
Tbh, the 7" nexus would suit me better. Odd browsing, few games, news app etc. 10"seems overkill to me and the £150 price point makes it a very worthwhile purchase. Can't really go wrong for that money.

The size is the only thing I don't like about the nexus 7. I don't bring my tablet everywhere since I have my phone. My touchpad is a good size I think. Maybe a little Smaller would be nice. 8-9"seems like a good size.

I'm looking for a tablet around $200 or less. The cheaper the better, of course. I am wanting to try and somewhat replace my now bulky 17 inch laptop with a tablet, and will mainly do web surfing, watch videos, read books, and the only games being played will be Angry Birds and Draw Something. I've been looking around, and the the Nexus 7 looks awesome, but I dislike the limited storage since I would like to store a lot of movies for on the go watching without WiFi. There is the pricier 16GB version, but I would rather not spend that much. Other tablets support MicroSD cards, which is awesome. With its higher end specs, I also feel like I would be wasting it on the simple stuff I plan to do, and the 7inches might be too small for my liking. (Maybe if I held it that opinion would change.)
I see other tablets on Amazon that have bigger screen, but the reviews don't make it sound appealing with comments saying the device doesn't work well, or feels cheap. I see other tablets from China that don't even seem to have a brand, which makes me wonder if many apps support them. Actually, that is just a concern with any type of tablet.
I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on some nice not-so-fancy tablets under $200. Preferably with bigger screens. Thanks in advance for any comments!

there aren't many options for around 200 USD, except tablets from China. one with the best review so far is: Ainol Novo 7. you can google it for more detailed reviews.

With Christmas fast approaching, I originally planned on purchasing myself an upgrade to my 2 year-old laptop. Yet, besides gaming which I am for the most part not particularly bothered about and can easily do still on the family PC, Xbox 360 or through OnLive, my current system proves more than capable for almost everything I can through at it - even if a bit slow on more laborious tasks such as video rendering (something which I have done only about three times in an entire two year period). Now, whilst this isn't a definitive decision, I think it may be nice to purchase a tablet for use downstairs as I dislike having to carry my laptop up and down to/from my room all the time especially when I want to just do a bit of light web browsing. Whilst the most obvious choice might be the Nexus 7 for most people, I own a Galaxy Note (which has a large 5.3" screen) and it is because of this that I don't see a 7" tablet as a worthy investment for such a measly increase in screen size. So, what do people here feel to be the best 10" tablet (so long as it will be publicly available in the UK by Christmas 2012)?

Like I said. Android browser is twice as slow as a regular one. Flash is no more. And you can't really do much. Typing is also a *****. That's why I said browsing on a tablet sucks.

Actually, I don't mind typing on a touchscreen keyboard. Plus, web browsing is not all I do on my Galaxy Note and what I would also do on a tablet. There is gaming, music, videos and ebooks.

Any prime series. The new note 10.1 is nice. 200$ gtab 10.1 is still viable. But in the android game its mostly all Transformer prime/infinity. Toshiba excites are high end, but expensive.

Well, having owned a Note 5.3 phone, I do like Samsung's S-Pen and various software. The Note 10.1 might be a nice option then, but I believe it is rather expensive for not all that great a specification unless I am mistaken?

Motorola Xoom is a good tablet, it should be good choice for you but dont buy motorola xoom 2 because of shortage roms.

The note 2 does have good specs, but with the infinity out, that right now is the best. But the note does have benefits as in touchwiz, touchwiz apps, all the S software, and the pen.
I'd say if you have the money, get Surface Pro or RT or any other Windows Tablet. Im afraid that you won't be satisfied of the x86 tablets battery life, well you could buy something cheap now and wait for new Intel processors, which should reduce power usage by many times. New CPU's are coming next year, and that should mean more battery life for Windows tablets.
If not "metro" then...

The Pro version of Surface, which runs a full version of Windows, is effectively just a very compact laptop in my eyes. Besides, I dislike Windows 8 greatly. The "Metro" UI (which is going to be renamed) is unappealing and the lack of a full desktop is worrying. As for a Nexus 7, no storage and a screen only slightly larger than my phone don't make it worth my time.

The Note 10.1 is not the Note 2. The Note 2 is the new version of the Note 5.3 and is a phone. The Note 10.1 is a tablet. It is just called a Note because it is part of a new range of devices which utilise the S-Pen, which is Samsung's version of a capacitive stylus.
I own an ipad but somehow i never felt a tablet to be of much use. But if you need to buy one, the galaxy note 10.1 seems impressive. But certain you tube videos shows that it is lagging in responsiveness in multitasking. You might want to check you tube videos to get an idea. But if you are not a S pen guy then you can get the galaxy tab much cheaper.
I won't personally recommend 7 in tablets.

Yes being an iPad owner I know it is the best tablet around. Just didn't recommend that since I don't see it as a great value for the money spent, at least for me. I still prefer my lap for anything like booking movie tickets, online shopping etc. IPad is only for my news reading and you tube. My galaxy s2 is great for emails and fb too.

Are you sure you need a tablet? If the Windows 8 Surface Pro is not tablet-y enough for you and you have a nice big Note, I doubt that there's much need to drop your hard earned money on something that brings limited value to you. It seems like an investment in a new ultra/air type laptop that is not a pain to lug around might be a better solution.

Need help deciding what tablet to get I currently have an iPad 4 retina 64gb, and I like it but have come to the conclusion that I only like it because the apps are optimized for the tablet screen, have the note 2 and love it and want the same experience on a tablet instead of waiting around for a jailbreak to get somethings that I can do on an android tablet. I like to play video games and the moga or plug in an Xbox 360 controller is a plus for me widgets and all that fun stuff I like. The choice of tablets that I'm considering is the Asus transformer infinity with keyboard dock or the nexus 10 leaning more to the infinity because with the keyboard dock it can replace my laptop with splash top connecting to my Mac mini it is a laptop at all times. Things that concern me is screen resolution, and tablet optimized apps any help is much appreciated.

Except for the fact that the Nexus 10 has a) availability issues and, more importantly, b) quality control issues that seem even worse than with the 700. You furthermore do not get the added battery life because of the powered dock, and less storage options. Why do you put forward the N10?
More on-topic, though: it really depends on preference, as Thats OK already said. I really do like the battery-powered dock and the extra oomph that gives -- I have a relatively long commute and irregular shifts, so it pleases me a lot not having to recharge every 12 hours, or whenever a wall socket is available somewhere. The screen resolution is fine -- I happily read technical (medical) books and articles, for which the radiographs, charts and stuff all come out really nicely, and even the private reading is a pleasure (text is crisp, contrast is good). The movies and documentaries or TED talks I regularly watch are great, too.
Nah. I'd pick the TF700 if it came out now if I had no other options. However... and we also discussed this last week -- you really should use the serch function, you know -- someone I forgot the name of mentioned that soon a bunch of new models of several brands will be announced soon, and it might be prudent to wait it out a bit. You might shoot yourself in the foot when buying into an aging system, no matter how well it performs. Then again, in tech, there's always something better just around the corner, and if you wait, you can wait forever.

You should wait and see the new Samsung tablet line-up (new models should be announced soon) before buying anything, well at least this is what i would do.
Search with Google for Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (this link is in italian, but you will get it - > http://www.everyeye.it/tech/notizia/ecco-la-line-up-dei-tablet-samsung-per-il-2013_148080) .
MWC is coming tomorrow and I am sure the right thing to do now is WAIT!!! Many new awesome products may be introduced during MWC, which may include tablets. I was hoping for a new Transformer tablet, but it seems that ASUS will introduce a new Padfone, which technically can still be considered a tablet.
While you may end up with a better tablet if you wait, that same logic would mean that you would never buy a tablet since there are *always* newer and better devices around the corner. Even if the "perfect" tablet gets announced tomorrow, you then need to wait another few months before actually getting your hands on it (if you are lucky) - and even then, how knows what will happen (could end up being a dud). You just can't tell the future!
My advice - go to Best Buy today, mess with a few different models for an hour or so and buy one NOW! We are not talking about purchasing a new house here - it's a tablet that costs ~$500 that will be worn-out and/or outdated in a year or two anyway. Satisfy the urge and go get what seems best - you won't regret it - any modern tablet is an extremely fun device to use!
It's easy for us to tell you to wait - we already have a tablet that we are thoroughly enjoying!

IMO 32 gb for the internal memory is plenty to hold your apps and some media. I put all the space-intensive stuff, music, pics, videos on external SD/micro cards anyway.
The dock, providing a good keyboard, extra battery, USB and extra SD card slot is one of the main selling points for this tablet.
If you want a dock, the TF700 is your best choice - no doubt about it.
If you don't need/want the dock you have quite a few other choices for a great tablet out there.

I thought about waiting myself. However, I wanted Tegra platform, and it looks like the earliest a Tegra 4 TF would release is in July. Side by side, I don't see a difference in the quality of the screen between an ipad 4 and a TF700. OTOH, the TF700 screen gets very very bright for outdoor usage.
As to storage, I've got a 32GB TF700, a 32GB microsd card installed, and the keyboard dock with a 16GB SD card in it; that's roughly 80GB of raw storage here and I can easily expand it. With the dock, battery life is phenominal. The tiny keyboard is taking some getting used to, but it's very handy. In fact, I haven't even turned my old dell laptop on since I got this. Just haven't needed it. I use a PS3 dualshock controller and a micro-hdmi cable for emulator gaming on the big screen. It's pretty cool. Haven't played any of these SNES games since I was a teenager.
The touchwiz launcher on your note 2 isn't available on a transformer. Asus has it's own launcher, but it's very nice. I suggest you try one out in Best Buy. They have a sale this week, the TF700 is $429, and the KB dock $99. That's like $120 off full price. Though, I think they change their sales on wed, so I'd decide quickly.
I don't regret buying the TF700 one bit. It's a good tablet/laptop replacement, and less than half the price of Asus's own ultrabook with a touchscreen. The only thing I'm really sacrificing is a full windows platform. In all the time I've had my old laptop though, I never really did anything on it that I couldn't do on this tablet, and this tablet does it for over 8 hours longer, lol.

Seriously, fck samsung and there crappy-soft-plastic build quality. Anyone who would consider a samsung product does not know anything about build quality. The ridiculously high resolution? Not worth it. Why push a higher pixel count than the retina display if you cant see pixels beyond retina display. All of the android tablets anounced for this yr do not improve on the infinity except for vizios tablet that uses a tegra 4, and who knows when that will actualy be released. The tegra 4 is expected to ship on devices late this year. Of tablets on the market a non-stock infinity handles them all with no issue. I can confirm this bc i work at a tech store and have tested them all against my infinity. No android tablet can replace a laptop like an infinity. Since buying mine 8 mos ago I havent once used my old laptop.

Just want to make a slight correction, minus the keyboard dock, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z has much better hardware specs than the tf700 (Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2 GB RAM, even 4G LTE). Since it is going to be released in May in the US, it will be a mistake not to consider it.
Dang must be a local best buy sale, mines still at $499. Though about the xperia but really like the idea if the dock. With the Ubuntu coming out it could make the tf700 VERY interesting.
If I get it I will be getting a dock. Was just wondering if it's better to get the 64 or just have a microSD and SD in the dock and call it good.

The problem is that you can't get a keyboard dock with the Sony, which is one of the TF700's main selling points!
I cannot understand why other manufacturers aren't offering an optional keyboard dock - I simply wont even consider a tablet without a keyboard dock -ever. It just makes the device that much more useful...

Absolutely not - a bluetooth keyboard is not even close to a true keyboard dock. A true keyboard dock is integrated with the device - it becomes part of the device. It includes an a battery to charge the device, a USB port, a SD memory card slot, customized buttons on the keyboard, a trackpad with two mouse buttons and even doubles as a stand for the tablet (which even charges the tablet!).
On the other hand, a bluetooth keyboard is just another separate accessory that you have to lug around, actually requires batteries instead of providing a battery, has no expansion slots and is, in general, a pain in the a$$ to work with (I know, I've tried).
So, as you can see - while they do make bluetooth keyboards that would work, they do not provide anywhere near the level of integration or functionality of a true keyboard dock. It's not even close.

Not really...
I've tried a couple I have the RockSoul BT keyboard it's a hassle and disconnects periodically.
For me a keyboard isn't a necessity.

I load all my large files like media and videos on SD/micro cards, basically use the internal for apps and such only. 32gb is plenty for me in that regard...
64gb micro in the tablet, 64gb SD in the dock + optional USB stick.... I don't think I'll ever run out of storage on this baby!

After just selling my Infinity on eBay, looks like ASUS just released a teaser for Computex for June 6 of new transformers coming our way. While they showed previous products, the design looks almost identical to our Infinities. What would you want in an upgrade?
For me they HAVE to fix the storage speeds after a couple of years being plagued by these issues. I would keep the 1080P display and just upgrade to a Tegra 4 which looks very promising in performance. The reference Tegra 4 used very high speed SSD from Sandisk and hopefully ASUS took noticed. They are putting an huge push towards tablets as it is their largest growing market, so throwing their weight behind a new transformer line makes since as it is truly a differentiator from the other high end tablets on the market.

I don't think anything about that preview screams Android, but it's totally possible. Computex seems like just as good of a place as any.
I don't think I see Asus jumping on the Tegra 4 bandwagon. This is purely speculation, but I think someone would have reported rumblings somewhere if that were the case. Asus made a big stink about having the first available Tegra 3 device. I think they would have at least thrown around a few renders and buzzwords if they were excited about sticking with Nvidia in the mobile space.
In the US the Snapdragon platform makes more sense. The whole industry (in the US, anyway) seems to be moving that way, and Qualcom has a proven track record with LTE integration. Remember that the data enabled Infinity was using a dual-core Snapdragon. I think it's more likely that we'd see something with the 800, especially since Qualcom is just gearing up to ship them now.
But if we're making wishlists here, I'd like to see something built on Intel. Silvermont sounds plain nasty. I know nothing is going to be announced in the near future, but I'd like to see what a true mobile x86 chip can do with Android. Particularly if they decide to be cool about bootloaders. I'm not holding my breath, but a guy can dream, can't he?
While I am excited about the prospect of a new Transformer tablet (though it may be something else), I would not expect to see any new products from ASUS in store in the near future. I am still waiting for the Transformer Book, which was probably announced nearly a year ago!
I woulnd't be exited about it either way, seeing as it is now so far above my budget I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway; plus my Infinity works perfectly well the way I want it to. (The only thing that bugs me is USB transfer speed, and it's equally low on my supposedly-not-bottlenecked SGS3. So it's MTP, not I/O And that's software-based.)
And between a new tablet and a new phone, the phone has priority for me. That low 1280x800 screenres and the (for my taste) smallish 4.8" is driving me nuts!
I suspect it'll be the W8 variant of the Infinity, actually. So far all the other W8 tabs are more on par with the TF300. (And the Vivo had a dualcore, so not even that.) W8 is now mature enough to require a high-end tablet in the market.

The Note 10.1 also has the ability to run 2 apps side by side. That is an awesome feature that I would like to see in future versions of Android.
I'm never buying another Asus tablet again if it isn't a Nexus. The Infinity is laggy and buggy constantly. I'm going to have to put CM 10.1 on it just to get it to work properly.
I hope they at least make it so that their tablets work properly before announcing more of them.
We've known the main issue for quite a while and the community has done a great job finding workarounds to the issues as best they could. The I/O issues after a few years of the Transformer series is inexcusable. I'm possible thinking of going with another high end tablet myself from another company, likely a Tegra 4 one (the games of the Tegra platform are just better than what anyone else is doing. Don't care on my phone, I do on my tablets).

Actually, judging from the size in the video in relation to the other tabs, it looks to be 8". Maybe an 8" Transformer? Would be a tad smallish, though.

I'm sure the Nexus is faster. It's also completely useless for many of us.
I would love to see a new transformer on the market with the amount of problems I've seen on mine.
With that said I love the design on this one and lately my tablet has became a decent little powerhouse. It has a little lag on it,but that's not too big of a deal as I mainly see it on the home screen and 2d intensive games.
Sure I would love a nexus 10 but as discussed multiple times it also has its problems. As for me being a poorish college student with a beautiful tablet I can deal with the lag.
As for a new transformer I would love to see a new one. I mean they do have a fairly unique design with these things and when they work right they are beautifully quick. I had to install cm10.1 (the later builds) to get this speed but who on xda actually keeps their devices 100 percent stock?
Anyways enough with the rant. With the vivotabs coming out we need a new transformed. Hopefully with more ram, less bottlenecks, and possibly with a snapdragon instead. Tegras are nice but I see problems with them and non-tegra based games and stuff. I have yet to find a tablet design that beats the transformer line. The note is nice but I still like mine better and love the camera on it

lol you beat me to this. I was about to suggest the same thing (HP Slatebook X2). If HP does this right, they may have a real chance of building a successful product, but I suspect the camera might not as good as the tf700. My tf700 has taken some really decent photos and it can easily put my Sensation to shame (I find the camera on my tf700 even better than the Note 2, but obviously I am not the best person to judge). .
SNAPDRAGONNNNNNNN 800. I'd kill to have one in a tablet.

I don't like how close the ports are to the plastic ridge, most USB cables have larger covers on their plugs... Let alone HDMI.

I used to be obsessed with the notion of a transformer mini, hoped the 370t/nexus 7 was going to be just that, with a full-sized dock and maybe a bezel to fill in the gaps made of front-facing speakers. I resigned myself to a 10" some time ago. Not sure if that happening now would make me happy or sad.

Personally I wouldn't touch an HP with a ten foot pole.
I used to repair computers for a living and the product I saw most in my shop was HP.
Lots of hardware issues.
Asus, IMHO, is one of the best for hardware stability, whether you are talking desktop, Laptop or tablet.
The only time I ever saw an Asus product was for software issues. The hardware lasts forever.
This is just my experience, though.
