What are the specs on the videos that you are trying to play?
Here is a vid of me using Vital Player on the transformer with a H.264 encoded MP4 and an MKV movie. No lag, no sync issues.
http://vimeo.com/23927515
If the movies you're trying to watch are encoded with High profile then playback will be laggy no matter what on the TF.

Nice!
Okay I'm a new when it comes ti all these video formats.. all I know is that I get choppy playback
So this handles 1080 but with some tweaks I'm assuming..again, I'm a new at this
Were those movies you converted? Is so you mind writing up a little tutorial
Thanks
For the MKV, I downloaded it was already encoded so I am not sure of its specs, but the playback quality and resolution are excellent even on my desktop's 24" HD monitors.
For the MP4 played at the beginning of the video, that was shot in 1920x1080, brought into Premiere CS5 for editing and exported through Adobe Media Encoder using H.264 at 1280x720.
There are some threads with Handbrake encoding specs on the forums as well.
When using Vital player make sure the Decode Mode settings are set to automatic. It will automatically recognize there is no hardware acceleration (as I understand is normal with the Tegra-2). It will then compensate with "software acceleration". Also in the Video Mode settings I have it set to speed over quality as the performance is better without sacrificing much of the quality to my eye.
With these settings, Vital Player should play just about any video you might download off of a torrent site. I have yet to find a video that does not play well through it. I'm not sure if other users who say it does not work for them have checked the Vital Player settings, if my videos are just not up to the elusive "high profile" they are talking about, or if I just have a rare Transformer that just works, but as you can see in the video it does work for me.

So you had to encode the mkv or mp4 before playback? So it cant just play them straight up?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
I believe that nearly any video you get is going to need be encoded in some form at some time.
The MKV was more than likely encoded by someone else before I downloaded, but no further encoding was necessary on my end. The MP4 was shot on my own camera (Canon 7D recording at 1920x1080p) and needed to be edited. When you export directly from the timeline in Premiere, it must be encoded to even be usable. For sites like YouTube or Vimeo to even accept them there must be encoding. The H.264 encoding that I used is the highest setting for that type of video's purpose (HD web playback). It is different than what I would have exported for burning to Blu-Ray but is adequate for a screen the size and resolution of the Transformer's.
When I return home, I will try bringing in the raw, unedited video from the 7D (which is around 3GB for a 4 minute vid at that resolution btw) and see if Vital Player plays it back with no lag. I seriously doubt it as some average computers have a hard time playing that back without lag. Even Final Cut Pro can't import raw 7D video without a conversion (Adobe Premiere does not have this problem though). Why anyone would want to play a video of this size and resolution on a tablet is beyond me (3GB for 4mins is ridiculous in a playback form). I can't even imagine wanting to watch a full length movie in that form.
Both of these videos seriously choke in any player other than Vital Player (including Mobo, QQ, and MVideo). I couldn't play any video in my library with them or the stock player, but all of these files play just fine in Vital.
I'm playing 720p with no problem
converted with Handbreak. Settings below.
container: "mp4" everything else turned off
picture: "1280x720"
video: "h.264 (x264)"
target size as least as large as the source
advanced: reference frames = 4
b-frames = 0
I'm using moboplayer and downloaded some sort of codec pack (the player prompted me the first time and opened the app store). The default player also works.

90% of all HD videos you download the internet are ripped from blu-ray and likely encoded with high profile h264 because that's what looks best. the tegra 2 cannot handle these files at 720 or 1080p, and thus they need to be re-encoded to main profile, which as i understand it, means a much lower bitrate (and thus worse picture).

i believe that is flash only, as in 720/1080 youtube streaming which is much lower quality than a high profile blu-ray rip. the problem is tegra 2, which is a year old, not supporting 720/1080p playback. it's the reason boxee box dropped tegra for an intel chip.

Personally I started using file explorers for opening video files. It usually agrees more with cifs and the standalone ones usually just work better. I'm loving this player tbh. Space bar is pause and play, a feature, as an editor, is welcome.

Yeah I definitely bought it. $3.95 is a good price, it's the first media player that actually uses hardware to decode. I just love it because it decodes AC3 audio and uses hardware acceleration.
Whereas, on other players including this one and RockPlayer,MoboPlayer, etc.
When they decode in hardware: no audio, video is fine
Decode in software: video lags, there is audio
This one meets both of them half way and says "bye!" to handbraking to get video files to work.
Works very well on my phone and saw that there was a update to it. I just had to get it for my Transformer when I saw Honeycomb support!
MX Player works better than moboPlayer on my Transformer, and plays 720 video faster from my SD card. Awesome.

Hi,
I've been using trial version of Dice Player and I'm almost ready to purchase the full version. However, I just noticed 3 other players that might worth considering:
- MX Player
- PowerDVD Mobile
- VLC (free)
- Seaman Player
I'd like to take comments from people who are using these. Which one should I go for ?
I personally use Dice Player. Plays everything smoothly.
MX Player: good alternative for free, but doesn't play some 720p MKVs with crisp frames.
VLC: Very early stage, not daily-use.
Rest... I haven't tried them.

I can't make up my mind what I like best, Dice Player or MX Video Player so I paid for both apps. The developers of each seem to be going head to head on what they can and cannot do. Both do HW playback which is what I like most about them. You wont be disappointed with Dice Player the least bit. They both seem to be the two best video players to date for Android.
thanks for your comments.

Well for one thing, PowerDVD Mobile is $20 and Dice Player and MX player are just over $5 and can play just about every video file type. So you weigh the odds. With Tegra 2 video is barely starting to break free of it's constraints so I wouldn't want to pay out the nose for a video player that might or might not play back my videos. IDK, that's just how I feel about it.
If you do wind up getting PowerDVD let us know how well it plays HW and SW video playback with multiple file types. I was reading and I didn't find if it will play .mkv files or not.
Personally, I would normally talk up Diceplayer, but after the last couple of updates, we've taken about 5 steps backwards. Whatever happened, it's gotten worse than it was before. I'm not sure what that's due to, but 720P videos no longer play as smoothly as they once did. Videos that used to play fine are now choppy and have bad audio. And these are the same videos, the only change is what version the player is running. I'd actually go back a few versions if I had made a backup of some kind.
Either way, I don't generally recommend Diceplayer anymore. I used to talk it up and down because it WAS a very good player, but things have certainly changed alot apparently.

Yep very true. I have had the exact same findings. I've been talking to the developer and just sent him a 720p mkv today that used to work and now doesn't. He's testing it on his transformer to see if he can find the issue.
Power DVD is too expensive. Mobo is so far the best
Hopefully DICE player can fix it's recent bugs (he has been issuing updates like crazy anyway).
MX has mich better gui, but dice player still has much better playback. There is noticeable difference in frame drops between the two (dice being much, much better, even though both use hardware decoding).
i use vplayer and it does all videos and even allows streaming
Dice Player with tegra addon . Nothing to me is smoother.

Hi,
I've tried PowerDVD mobile.
It has a very elegant GUI and nice features.
It serves music and photos in addition to videos and it also includes a DLNA player.
However, videos are not as smooth as MX Player or Dice Player.
Probably it does not support as much codecs.

i just found BS player for android its in beta right now but it works great
I wish I could get DICE player to work. Everytime I open it, it says "Sorry, this video cannot be played." I haven't even picked a video yet!
Having endless issues trying to play 720p mkv videos I have dice player, mobo player, and mx video player. When the video is smooth i get no sound and when sound works the video gets choppy during action/ fast scenes... any advice?

MX Video for me
i started with Mobo since the stock player only reads internal files. but i wanted full screen with no icons on the bottom. i tried dice trial and liked it so i bought the full version than i saw mx video and bought it too. i like both, but dice player on lets me choose (ie: /Removable/MicroSD don't even try microsd).
whereas mx video lets me add several locations that i can browse too and i get full screen. i haven't had any problems with any video incls so far.
i just wish i could connect a protable dvd player.
i also like the easy way it handles subtitles and .vob
I'm trying to play some avi's and mpgs on my Infinity, but they don't seem to want to work. I tried both Dice Player and BS Player but no go. These same files worked on my Prime, so I'm not sure what the issue might be. Are there some codecs that need to be downloaded or something, or does the Infinity just not play these type of files? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

he mentioned mpgs and avi I think. To the OP what about stock player? if that doesn't play an .avi something is wrong. you shouldn't need codecs for .avi or .mpeg. uninstall both BS and DICE since they don't work you can also try MXPlayer and get the arm7 codec pack as well (both free). that is my favorite and has played every file type so far

You can have tons of different codecs in the avi files, so that's not really specific.
That's good this worked for you, OP, but Dice and BS should play mkv x264 files just fine, so this is unusual. It would be a different story if you got video with no audio because of DTS encoding.

Excellent point that people tend to overlook. AVI and MPG are both Container Formats. Just because they have the same file extension that another working video does doesn't mean you will be able to decode it.
Use a more in depth way of finding out why it won't work.

DIdn't know about the .avi having different codecs, thought .avi was .avi. As for Dice and BS I agree they should work but figured since they didn't why not try MX, which seems to have worked for the OP. Personally I like MX best anyway so I may be a little biased
I used to love MX on my TF101, but when I tried it on the TF700 it kept using software rendering (so big battery drain as CPU is working hard). All of the same files played using hardware rendering with Dice. Am i missing something?

I picked up an Infinity after owning a Transformer Prime, since they have very similar SoCs I assumed that I would have the same codec support built in. However now I'm finding that almost half the 720p H.264 content that worked on the Prime is not supported by the Infinity. Anyone else having this problem? Is it possible that Asus has simply not built support into their somewhat questionable firmware releases?

Welcme to the TF700 and it's respective corner of XDA. There are a few odd differences between the 700 and past models that have left folks scratching their heads, such as the Support of sixaxis controllers without the sixaxis app. As for the codecs, not sure as I ditch the stock player immediately as it never seems to support what I want plus I like extra features such as sliding the side of the screen for brightness and volume levels.
Actually I've tried every video player that I know of, all switch to SW mode. Has anyone found a player that supports HW acceleration, I would assume that if any player supported HW decoding they all would. I will take a look at the differences in media and see if I can spot the discrepancies .

It's gotta be your audio, BS player handles most audio. Load up the video in handbreak and see what the format is.
I'll check out the format info, but I don't think it's the audio, MX Player will let you independently set audio and video hardware acceleration.

+1 for Dice - I too was getting S/W rendering with MX Player - tried Dice and it worked right way using H/W rendering... haven't looked back since. I also like that Dice had a volume booster built-in - I've found many videos just have their volume set way to low - Dice handles that nicely.

I'm with Keion on this, try BSplayer.
Which file formats do not play on your Infinity? Also try to find out which video and audio codecs are used for that file format. Use Media Info (for windows) or similar tool.
The files I'm having issues with are 720p H.264 main profile level 4.1. I've tried Dice, oddly enough if I open the videos from the file browser and play them with Dice they drop to SW, however if I open them from inside Dice they play HW. Wierd.
